Emergency service nursing staff: a survey of knowledge, attitudes, and concerns

A survey of the nursing staff in an emergency service was completed by anonymous questionnaire. The results of the survey indicate satisfaction and confidence in the triaging group, a wish for more staff and specific inservice course content, good perception of emergency situations, misperception about restraint policy and the life-threatening nature of opiate withdrawal, and the need to focus on a clearer definition of those patients who do not require acute care.     

Childhood injury: call for action

We aim to raise awareness of the burden of avoidable death and disability attributable to childhood injury in Europe in general and Croatia in particular. As formerly common causes of childhood death have declined, injuries have become the most important single cause of death in childhood in European countries. Yet, there are large differences between countries, and especially between the eastern and western parts of Europe. The existence of these differences, reflecting rapid declines in some countries, indicate the scope for prevention. But injuries are low on the policy agenda for various reasons, including their lack of visibility. We advocated the development of integrated intersectoral policies underpinned by an effective public health structure.     

Narrative medicine: A call to pens

An call for papers on the topic of narrative medicine as it pertains to the practice of clinical genetics, this article briefly reviews the tenets of narrative medicine and the ethical issues associated with publishing patients' and doctors' stories. It is an invitation to the readership of the American Journal of Medical Genetics to share its stories of caring for and living with genetic conditions in our new column called Frameshifts. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
