The aim of this study was to measure the contraction stress of three flowable resin composites and to correlate the stress with the elastic modulus and the degree of conversion. One low-shrinkage (Venus Diamond Flow) and two conventional (Tetric EvoFlow and X-Flow) flowable composites were polymerized for 40s with a light-emitting diode (LED) curing unit. Contraction force was continuously recorded for 300s using a stress-analyser, and stress values were calculated at 40s and at 300s. The maximum stress rate was also calculated for each specimen. The elastic modulus of each composite was assayed using a biaxial flexural test, and degree of conversion was analysed with Raman spectroscopy. X-Flow exhibited higher stress values than the other tested materials. Venus Diamond Flow showed the lowest stress values at 40s and at 300s, and the lowest maximum stress rate. Stress values were correlated with elastic modulus but not with degree of conversion, which was comparable among all tested materials.

Contraction stresses of composite resin filling materials.
The polymerization shrinkage of composite resin filling materials and the tensile stresses developed when the shrinkage is restrained were measured in an in vitro experiment. This allows an estimation to be made of the forces exerted upon the enamel walls of cavities filled with the resin in the acid etch technique. The results indicate that the stresses acting on the enamel are low compared to the tensile strength of the enamel.

The aim of this study was to compare surface roughness of flowable (Admira Flow, Filtek Flow, Tetric Flow) and packable (Admira, Filtek P60, Tetric HB) composite resin restorative materials finishing with Sof-Lex discs by means of average surface roughness (Ra) measurement using a surface profilometer and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). For each test group five specimens were prepared and roughness was measured in five different positions using a profilometer with a traversing distance of 4 mm and a cut-off value of 0.8 mm. The radius of the tracing diamond tip was 5 microm and measuring force and speed was 4 mN and 0.5 mm/s, respectively. The surface roughness of each individual disk was taken as the arithmetic mean of the Ra values measured in five different positions. Additionally, one specimen of each test group after finishing was observed under SEM with the magnification of x800 and x2500. Before finishing with Sof-Lex discs, flowable composite materials showed a smoother surface than packable composites restoratives (P < 0.05). However, after the finishing procedures similar surface textures were observed both from packable and flowable composites (P > 0.05).

ObjectivesTo assess the cuspal deflection and cervical microleakage of standardised Class II cavities incrementally filled with a dimethacrylate RBC or bulk-fill flowable RBC bases.MethodsTwenty-four sound upper premolar teeth with Class II cavities were allocated to three groups (n = 8). Restoration of the teeth involved the placement of an RBC (GrandioSO) in eight oblique increments (Group A) or Groups B and C were restored to within 2 mm of the palatal cusp in a single increment with bulk-fill flowable RBC bases (SDR and x-tra base) before the two occlusal cavity increments were placed with GrandioSO. Buccal and palatal cusp deflections were recorded postirradiation using a twin channel deflection measuring gauge. Following restoration, the teeth were thermocycled, immersed in 0.2% basic fuchsin dye for 24 h, sectioned and examined for cervical microleakage.ResultsThe mean total cuspal deflection for the oblique incremental restoration technique was 11.26 (2.56) μm (Group A) and 4.63 (1.19) μm (Group B) and 4.73 (0.99) μm (Group C) for the bulk-fill flowable RBC bases. A significant increase in the mean total cuspal deflection for the incrementally filled GrandioSO compared with the SDR (P = 0.007) and x-tra base (P = 0.005) restored teeth was evident. No significant difference in the cervical microleakage scores was recorded between groups AC (P > 0.05).ConclusionsThe bulk-fill flowable RBC bases significantly reduced cuspal deflection compared with a conventional RBC restored in an oblique incremental filling technique with no associated change in cervical microleakage recorded.

This clinical study evaluated the retention and caries protection of a flowable resin composite (Flow Line) and a flowable compomer (Dyract Flow) used in preventive resin restorations as compared to the conventional preventive resin technique which uses a resin composite (Brilliant) and a sealant (Concise). This study observed 205 permanent molars with small carious cavities less than 1.5 mm in width, which were obtained from 165 children aged 7 to 15 years. Flowable resin composite was used to treat 75 teeth, and 71 teeth were treated with flowable compomer in both cavities and caries-free fissures. For the control group, 59 teeth were treated with resin composite in cavities and sealant in caries-free fissures. The teeth were evaluated at 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24-month intervals. After three months, all 205 treated teeth were completely intact. After six months, 66 of the 71 teeth treated with flowable resin composite and 65 of the 70 teeth treated with flowable compomer were complete, compared to 57 of the 58 teeth treated with the conventional preventive resin technique. After 12 months, 60 of the 67 teeth treated with flowable resin composite and 61 of the 67 teeth treated with flowable compomer were complete, compared to 51 of the 55 teeth treated with the conventional preventive resin technique. After 18 months, 53 of the 61 teeth treated with flowable resin composite and 54 of the 62 teeth treated with flowable compomer were complete, compared to 47 of the 53 teeth treated with the conventional preventive resin technique. After 24 months, 49 of the 58 teeth treated with flowable resin composite and 45 of the 57 teeth treated with flowable compomer were complete, compared to 42 of the 52 teeth treated with the conventional preventive resin technique. There were no statistically significant differences in retention rates among all groups after 3, 6, 12, 18 or 24-months (p>0.05). One tooth treated with flowable resin composite and one tooth treated with flowable compomer developed caries after 18 and 24 months, respectively, resulting from partial loss at "caries-free fissures." Five teeth developed caries in the conventional preventive resin group; one after 12 months, two after 18 months and one after 24 months, due to loss at cavities. The final caries occurred after 24 months, resulting from partial loss at "caries-free fissures." The differences in caries development among the three groups were not statistically significant (p>0.05). This study suggested that flowable resin composite and flowable compomer could be used for preventive resin restorations. Meanwhile, a vigilant recall should be followed-up due to the risk of failure for flowable materials in "caries-free" fissures. The repair should be performed immediately, in case the preventive resin restoration develops a fracture or loss.

ObjectiveThis study aimed to develop and characterize an ion-releasing experimental fiber-reinforced flowable composite (Bio-SFRC) and dentin treatment solution made of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) with a high molecular weight. In addition we also evaluated the interface structure and mineralization potential between the Bio-SFRC and dentin.MethodsSome mechanical properties (flexural properties and fracture toughness) of Bio-SFRC in comparison with commercial inert (G-aenial Flo X) and ion-releasing materials (ACTIVA-BioActive Base/Liner and Fuji II LC) were assessed (n = 8/group). Calcium-release at different time-points was measured during the first six weeks by using a calcium-ion selective electrode. Surface analysis of composites after being stored in simulated body fluid (SBF) was investigated by using SEM/EDS. Dentin disks (n = 50) were prepared from extracted sound teeth and demineralization was simulated by acid etching. SEM/EDS was used to evaluate the microstructure of dentin on the top surface and at interface with composites after being stored in SBF.ResultsBio-SFRC showed higher fracture toughness (1.6 MPa m1/2) (p < 0.05) compared to Flo X (1.2 MPa m1/2), ACTIVA (1 MPa m1/2) and Fuji II LC (0.8 MPa m1/2). Accumulative calcium release after six weeks from Bio-SFRC (15 mg/l) was higher than other tested ion-releasing materials (≈ 6 mg/l). Mineralization was clearly seen at the interface between treated dentin and Bio-SFRC. None of the commercial tested materials showed signs of mineralization at the interface and dentinal tubules remained open.Significance.Developing such reinforced ion-releasing flowable composite and PAA solution might offer the potential for mineralization at the interface and inside the organic matrix of demineralized dentin.

Relative wear of flowable and highly filled composite
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: By decreasing the proportion of filler, flowable composites are easy to adapt to small cavity preparations. However, the wear resistance of flowable composites is a clinical concern, as improved wear has been related to increased filler percentage. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare wear for flowable composites and comparable heavily filled materials. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Wear by attrition and abrasion (microm) of microfilled flowable (Heliomolar Flow) and heavily filled microfill (Heliomolar HB) was measured and compared to a microhybrid flowable (Tetric Flow) and a heavily filled microhybrid (Tetric HB). There were 5 specimens, 2 mm thick and 15 mm in diameter, in each group. The Oregon Health Sciences University oral wear simulator was used to produce abrasive wear and attrition for all specimens. Abrasion and attrition of the substrates were measured using a profilometer. Data were subjected to a 3-way analysis of variance for the 3 main factors: composite type, filler load, and wear type (alpha=.05) RESULTS: Composite wear rates were significantly influenced (P <.01) by both the type of wear and the filler amount. Abrasive wear occurred less than wear by attrition, and the heavily filled composites experienced less wear than the flowable composites. CONCLUSIONS: Results of this in vitro study suggest that highly filled microhybrid composites may have greater wear resistance for contact-supporting posterior restorations. However, in small noncontact restorations where longevity may be dictated by abrasion, flowable microfilled resins may be adequate.

The purpose of this in vitro microleakage study was to evaluate four low-viscosity composite resin systems. Each resin system included the corresponding bonding agent for each respective flowable composite. A hybrid material was used as a control. A total of 75 noncarious, freshly extracted human teeth were prepared with a Class 5 occlusal preparation and a gingival preparation at the cementoenamel junction. The materials were inserted according to the manufacturers' recommendations using the single-component bonding agent for each system. Teeth were thermocycled 800 times between 5 degrees C and 55 degrees C with 30-second dwell times. The teeth were then coated with nail polish 1 mm short of the restoration, placed in a basic fuchsin dye for 24 hours, and sectioned with a diamond wheel. Enamel and dentin/cementum margins were analyzed for microleakage on a scale of 0 (no leakage) to 3 (axial wall). Results were evaluated with the Fisher's exact test. The results of the study indicate that there was no leakage at the enamel margin of any restorations. No statistically significant differences in microleakage were found in dentin/cementum margins among the samples in the experimental group or between the experimental group and control group. The results indicate flowable composites demonstrate resistance to microleakage in both enamel and cementum/dentin margins similar to TPH hybrid composite.

This study measured the linear polymerization displacement and polymerization forces induced by polymerization shrinkage of a series of flowable resin-based restorative materials. The materials tested were 22 flowable resin-based restorative materials (Admira Flow, Aelite Flow, Aeliteflow LV, Aria, Crystal Essence, Definite Flow, Dyract Flow, Filtek Flow, FloRestore, Flow-it, Flow-Line, Freedom, Glacier, OmegaFlo, PermaFlo, Photo SC, Revolution 2, Star Flow, Synergy Flow, Tetric Flow, Ultraseal XT and Wave). Measurements for linear polymerization displacement and polymerization forces were performed using custom made measuring devices. Polymerization of the test materials was carried out for 60 seconds by means of a light curing unit, and each property was measured for 180 seconds from the start of curing in eight specimens for each material. Statistical evaluation of the data was performed with one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Tukey's Studentized Range (HSD) test (p=0.05) and simple linear regression. A wide range of values was recorded for linear polymerization displacement (26.61 to 80.74 microns) and polymerization forces (3.23 to 7.48 kilograms). Statistically significant differences among materials were found for both properties studied. Very few materials (Freedom, Glacier, and Photo SC) presented low values of linear polymerization displacement and polymerization forces (similar to hybrid resin composites), while the majority of materials presented very high values in both properties studied. Study of the shrinkage kinetics revealed the exponential growth process of both properties. The polymerization forces development exhibited a few seconds delay over linear polymerization displacement. Simple linear regression showed that the two polymerization shrinkage properties that were studied were not highly correlated (r2=0.59).

This in vitro study aimed to investigate the influence of flowable composite lining with different thicknesses on the marginal quality and internal porosity of Class II composite restorations. Thirty-two intact molars, each prepared with two box-only Class II cavities, were randomly divided into four groups: Group 1, P60 filling alone; Group 2, ultrathin flowable composite lining/co-cured with overlaying composite; Group 3, thin lining/pre-cured and Group 4, thick lining/pre-cured. The teeth were then thermocycled for 1500 cycles (between 5 degrees C and 60 degrees C) and dye immersed for 24 hours. Exterior surface replicas of these restorations were fabricated before and after thermocycling and examined by SEM to evaluate percentages of the five marginal patterns. Data was statistically evaluated using one-way ANOVA test. The teeth were subsequently sectioned longitudinally. The interface microleakage of cervical margin was measured as to the extent of dye penetration. Internal voids were separately recorded in the cervical interface and the cervical and occlusal halves of the restorations. Mann-Whitney test was applied to analyze the interface microleakage and internal voids. Results revealed that replicas of Group 4 presented the highest percentage of marginal openings both before and after thermocycling in SEM examination. Group 2 exhibited superior marginal quality in interface microleakage evaluation compared to the other groups, while Group 4 exhibited the worst. The pre-cured groups (Group 3 and 4) showed significant reduction in interface and cervical voids. Despite the reduction in interface voids, a thick lining may impair the marginal sealing, especially after thermocycling. It was concluded that a minimally thin flowable composite lining improved cavity adaptation and marginal sealing.

AIM: To evaluate microleakage of a flowable composite used as a protective isolating base, applied with different adhesive systems. METHODOLOGY: Seventy root-filled teeth were divided into seven groups. A flowable composite base (Tetric Flow Chroma) was used with three adhesive techniques (Syntac, Excite, Excite DCS; in the three cases with and without acid etching) and in a control group without dentine conditioning or adhesive placement. A 30% hydrogen peroxide solution was applied for 24 h in the pulp chambers, followed by the placement of a dye (silver nitrate) for 4 h. Each tooth was sectioned longitudinally, and examined under 4x magnification to assess the tooth/restoration dye leakage following a four-degree scale. Percentage of dye penetration was registered. Statistical analysis was made through the Tukey and Mann-Whitney U-tests. RESULTS: Maximum leakage (100% of specimens) was recorded in the control group without an adhesive system. In the groups subjected to acid etching, the percentage of leakage corresponded to Excite DSC (10%), followed by Syntac (20%) and Excite (30%). In the groups in which only an adhesive system was used, 50% of the teeth demonstrated dye leakage. Statistically significant differences in terms of leakage were observed between the control group and the experimental groups (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences among the experimental groups, but comparing the leakage percentages obtained between the groups in which the teeth were subjected to prior acid etching, and those in which no etching was carried out, observed differences were significant (P = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS: There were no significant differences between the adhesive systems in terms of leakage. Acid etching significantly reduced leakage.
