BACKGROUND: Exposure to mite allergens is a major risk factor for sensitization and the development of asthma. Der p 1 and Der f 1 content in homes and probably the proportion of both antigens is highly variable even in the same geographical area. OBJECTIVE: We investigated specific indoor determinants of Der p 1 and Der f 1 concentrations in house dust of two German cities, Erfurt and Hamburg (n = 405 homes). METHODS: Mite allergen levels were determined using monoclonal antibodies against Der p 1 and Der f 1 by the ELISA method. Indoor relative humidity and temperature were monitored continuously in the homes over 1 week. The characteristics of homes and occupants were assessed by questionnaire to obtain information on factors which may have an impact on the mite antigen concentration in house dust. These determinants were studied by multivariate regression analysis. RESULTS: The correlation between concentrations of Der p 1 and Der f 1 inside the homes was weak (r = 0.29-0.35), indicating that different determinants are relevant. Concentrations of the allergens were significantly higher on lower floors (ratios 2-8 times, Der p 1, Der f 1), on old mattresses (ratios 3-13 times, Der p 1, Der f 1), in post-war buildings (ratio 6 times, Der p 1), for non-central heating (ratio 2 times, Der p 1), for old carpets (ratio 3 times, Der p 1) and for the presence of a dog in the house (ratio 3 times, Der f 1). Furthermore, mite concentration increases with raising relative humidity (ratio 1.03 per 1%, Der p 1) and with decreasing temperature (ratio 0.86 per 1 degrees C, Der p 1) indoors. CONCLUSION: Both Der p 1 and Der f 1 concentrations should be measured in house dust, since they are only weakly correlated and have different determinants.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Exposure to house dust mite (HDM) allergens often results in worsening of asthma. Therefore, avoidance of exposure to HDM allergens is often proposed. Unfortunately, the most effective and feasible avoidance strategy is still not completely assessed. Consequently, we investigated the effects of a combined HDM avoidance strategy on HDM allergen concentrations and clinical condition of allergic, mild asthmatic, patients using no inhaled steroids. METHODS: Asthmatic patients, allergic to HDM, using no inhaled corticosteroids, were randomly allocated to an active (n = 76) or a placebo allergen-avoidance group (n = 81). Avoidance measures consisted of applying Acarosan(R) (placebo: water) to the living room and bedroom floors, and the use of HDM-impermeable covers for mattresses and bedding (placebo: cotton covers for mattresses only). Effects on allergen concentrations (Der p 1), FEV1, bronchial hyperresponsiveness, peak flow parameters and asthma symptom scores were studied during 20 weeks and controlled for the allergic status of the patients. RESULTS: The active covers reduced Der p 1 concentrations to 9.4% (P = 0.0001), and were always significant lower than in the placebo group (P = 0.0002). Acarosan(R) resulted in slight but significant decreases (twofold, P = 0.0001), both on living room and bedroom floors, but concentrations were never significantly lower than the placebo group. Although the combined avoidance strategy resulted in a considerable reduction in allergen load in the active group, no differences were seen between the two groups in any of the clinical parameters during the follow-up period in this group of allergic asthmatics, using no inhaled corticosteroids. Corrections for the allergic status did not alter these results. CONCLUSIONS: The combined avoidance strategy was effective in reducing HDM allergen concentration. This was especially achieved by the allergen-impermeable covers, while the effects of Acarosan(R) were only marginal. However, this allergen reduction was not reflected in a convincing improvement in clinical condition in this group of mild allergic asthmatics, using no inhaled steroids. Perhaps, a longer follow-up period would have resulted in more pronounced effects.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: In temperate climates, exposure to house dust mite (HDM) allergens is the strongest environmental risk factor for childhood asthma. Environmental modifications to limit exposure have the potential to reduce the prevalence of asthma. The aim of this study was to reduce allergen exposure for children at high risk of developing asthma. METHODS: A total of 616 pregnant women were randomized to HDM intervention and control groups. The control group had no special recommendations whereas the intervention group was given allergen impermeable mattress covers and an acaricidal washing detergent for bedding. Children were visited regularly until 18 months of age to have dust collected from their bed. RESULTS: Der p 1 concentrations in the control group increased from 5.20 microg/g at 1 month to 22.18 microg/g at 18 months but remained low in the intervention group, ranging from 3.27 microg/g at 1 month to 6.12 microg/g at 18 months. CONCLUSIONS: In a high HDM allergen environment, a combined approach using physical barriers and an acaricidal wash, is effective in reducing HDM allergen concentrations in bedding. However, even with these control measures in place, HDM allergen levels remained high by international standards.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: There is very limited information comparing T-cell responses to different house dust mite (HDM) allergens even though T cells are essential in the initiation and regulation of immunoglobulin (Ig) E synthesis and eosinophilia. OBJECTIVE: To compare the level of T-cell proliferation and cytokine production to the group 1 and group 7 HDM allergens which are known to have different IgE-binding capabilities. METHODS: Freshly isolated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from HDM-allergic and HDM-nonallergic donors were stimulated with the group 1 and group 7 allergens of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and the level of proliferation as well as IL-5 and IFNgamma production were measured. RESULTS: The proliferative and IL-5 production to the group 1 and group 7 allergens were equivalent despite the group 7 allergen's lower frequency of IgE-binding. However more IFNgamma was produced to Der p 7 than to Der p 1, particularly for the nonallergic donors. As expected IL-5 production was much higher for PBMC from the allergic donors than for cells from nonallergics; however, there was no difference in the level of T-cell proliferation between the donor groups. CONCLUSION: The relative importance of the individual HDM allergens is normally determined by measuring the frequency of IgE-binding to the allergen in sera from an allergic population. The equivalent increased IL-5 response of PBMC from allergic people to the group 1 and group 7 allergens despite the different IgE-inducing activity indicates that these allergens may be equally capable of contributing to an asthmatic response by inducing eosinophilia.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Studies in vivo have shown that the cysteine peptidase activity of group 1 house dust mite allergens contributes to their allergenicity. These allergens are synthesized initially as proenzymes and removal of the propiece is necessary to unmask their proteolytic activity. In related C1 family cysteine peptidases of enzyme clan CA, liberated propieces continue to inhibit the mature peptidase as tight binding inhibitors. As it is not known whether mite peptidase allergens behave similarly, our objective was to investigate the effect of the Der p 1 propiece on the catalytic activity of Der p 1 and Der f 1. METHODS: Enzymatic activity of natural Der p 1 and Der f 1 was assessed using a specific substrate and the effect of the recombinant propiece on its enzyme kinetics defined. The integrity of the propiece during these interactions was studied functionally and by analysis of the reaction mixtures. RESULTS: Der p 1 propiece was a potent competitive inhibitor of Der p 1 and Der f 1. In contrast to other cysteine peptidase prodomains, which are cognate tight binding inhibitors, the Der p 1 propiece behaves as a substrate and is fully degraded during this interaction. CONCLUSION: Mature Der p 1-prodomain interactions differ from other C1 family cysteine peptidases, suggesting that group 1 mite allergens are a new subgroup among C1 family cysteine peptidases. The rapid inactivation of Der p 1 prodomain is a newly identified mechanism that may contribute to the potency of this allergen.  相似文献

The avoidance of house dust mite allergens is a major area of interest and essentially requires a significant removal of these allergens from the immediately respirable air. Electrostatic attraction and anchoring of particulate matter using electret polymers is commonly used for air filtration purposes. This effect is investigated for its possible use in domestic allergen avoidance. Polypropylene electret, heat-treated electret and non-electret, and wool and nylon fibre samples were soiled with house dust known to contain Der p 1 allergen. These samples were vacuumed at three air face velocities. The proportions of released and anchored dust were calculated. Released dust was collected and analysed for Der p 1 concentration and compared to stock dust values. Results showed that compared to uncharged fibres at least 95% more dust remained anchored in the electret fibres. Also, overall Der p 1 release was reduced by more than 49%. Der p 1 allergen concentrations in the collected dust were relatively constant for all the fibres tested, indicating no selective attraction or repulsion of Der p 1 allergen carrying particles in the experimental dust. The consistently high dust anchoring ability of the electret fibres could be used in many domestic products that are known to harbour particulate allergens, to reduce their release and inhalation.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Mite allergens have been involved in airway sensitization and allergic diseases. Immunoassays for the identification and quantifiction of house dust mite (HDM) allergens are useful to improve the knowledge of regional mite fauna and the remediation of mite allergens in allergic diseases. The present study analyzed the association between levels of HDM allergen and results of mite identification or skin prick test (SPT) in two different areas of Bahia, Brazil. METHODS: Forty-two asthmatic subjects from a rural area (group I; n = 21) and a slum (group II; n = 21) were evaluated through SPT with HDM allergens and had dust samples collected at their homes for mite identification and allergen measurements. RESULTS: Positive SPT to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, Dermatophagoides farinae and Blomia tropicalis allergens were observed in 42.9, 38.0 and 42.9% subjects from group I and in 47.6, 19.0 and 33.3% subjects from group II, respectively. D. pteronyssinus and B. tropicalis were identified in approximately 76 and 50% of samples from both groups, respectively. D. farinae was identified in 38.0 and 9.5% of samples from groups I and II, respectively (p < 0.005). Der p 1, Der f 1 and Blo t 5 detection were associated with mite identification (p < 0.05). Association between HDM allergen levels over 2 microg/g of dust and positive SPT occurred only with D. pteronyssinus (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: D. pteronyssinus was the most prevalent mite species in this study followed by B. tropicalis and D. farinae. Immunoassays done to measure mite allergens were associated with mite-species identification. We conclude that these three mite species must be included on panels for the diagnosis of allergic airway diseases in subjects living in such regions.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: House dust mite (HDM) Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus is the most important source of indoor allergens that cause allergic diseases in Taiwan. We prepared purified HDM allergens (Der p 1, Der p 2 and Der p 5) to detect allergen-specific immunoglobulin (Ig) E responsiveness among a large number of test subjects. The robust genetic typing system for HLA class II genes also facilitated the study on association of HLA and allergic response toward HDM. OBJECTIVE: This study intended to investigate the association between HLA class II alleles and the IgE responsiveness to the major allergens from HDM, D. pteronyssinus. METHODS: Two hundred and forty-eight subjects were selected for HLA association study. Plasma HDM allergen (Der p 1, Der p 2, Der p 5) -specific IgE and Der p 2-specific IgG antibodies were detected by ELISA, while HLA class II -DRB1, -DQA1, -DQB1, -DPB1 genetic polymorphism was determined by polymerase chain reaction/sequence-specific oligonucleotide probe hybridization (PCR/SSOPH). Statistical comparison of the allelic distribution of each HLA class II genes among the individuals with/without HDM allergen-specific IgE and IgG antibodies were performed. RESULTS: There was no significant association between HLA DRB1, DQB1, DQA1 alleles and HDM-specific IgE responsiveness noted. Only DRB1*0803 and the linked DQA1*0103 alleles showed positive association with Der p 5-specific IgE responsiveness. However, we found that HLA-DPB1*1301 predisposed subjects to IgE responsiveness to HDM Der p 5. HLA DPB1*0501 was weakly associated with the IgE responsiveness to HDM Der p 1 and Der p 5. BACKGROUND: Knowledge of the occurrence of house dust mites (HDM) and their allergens in domestic locations is important when planning intervention. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe the distribution of HDMs and their allergens before intervention in multiple locations in the homes of newly diagnosed HDM-allergic patients with a known high Der 1 concentration in their mattress dust. METHODS: Dust was collected from ten locations in the homes of eight HDM-allergic patients. Dust was analysed for allergen content with ELISAs for Der f 1, Der p 1 and Der m 1; and HDM were counted. Total allergen concentrations ( micro g Der 1/g dust) were expressed as the sum of Der f 1, Der p 1 and Der m 1. RESULTS: On mattresses the median concentration was 86 micro g Der 1/g dust (range 30-288) and 188 mites/g dust (range 12-1910). Der 1 exceeded 10 micro g/g dust in mattresses (8/8), duvets/pillows (3/8), a bedroom carpet (1/1), a living room carpet (1/6), upholstered furniture (2/8) and a curtain (1/5). Uncarpeted floors, upholstered furniture, bookshelves and walls had significantly lower Der 1 concentration than the mattresses. The relative contribution of Der p 1, Der f 1 or Der m 1 to Der 1 was related to homes, rather than to the location. Der m 1 only occurred in minute amounts. CONCLUSION: For HDM intervention, our results indicate that priority should be given to the removal of allergens from mattresses, and in addition from carpets, duvets/pillows and upholstered furniture. Dust from walls, uncarpeted floors, bookshelves and curtains appear to contribute insignificantly to the domestic HDM allergen load.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Exposure to allergens plays a role in the development of bronchial hyperresponsiveness and in the chronic inflammatory response seen in asthmatic patients. House dust mites (HDMs) are an important source of allergen. Reduction of these allergens might lead to better lung function and reduction of asthma symptoms. OBJECTIVE: The effect of HDM-impermeable covers on HDM allergen levels, peak flow values, and asthma symptoms were measured. Therefore a randomized clinical trial was carried out. METHODS: Fifty-two allergic asthmatic patients were randomly allocated to use the HDM-impermeable or placebo covers. During the study period, daily peak flow and asthma symptom scores were recorded. Dust samples were taken from the mattresses. RESULTS: We observed a significant reduction in HDM allergen levels on the mattresses after encasing them with HDM-impermeable covers (reduction of 87% of Der p 1 in micrograms per gram of dust; P <.001). Baseline symptoms were so low that no improvement could be established. Morning peak expiratory flow is significantly higher in the intervention group compared with that seen in the placebo group during the study period (beta=20.2; P <.01). CONCLUSIONS: HDM-impermeable covers significantly decreased the level of HDM allergens. Furthermore, morning peak flow was significantly increased during the intervention period. This study indicates that HDM allergen-avoidance measures might have beneficial effects on allergen reduction and asthma outcome.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Chemical agents such as tannic acid and detergents have been shown to introduce non-random bias in allergen measurement. OBJECTIVE: We investigated how several substances that are commonly found in floor dust (carpet fresheners, powdered pesticides, and table salt) affected immunoassays of purified standard allergens. METHODS: Three sets of experiments were conducted to: (1) screen for interference with allergen enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA); (2) test for concentration-response; and (3) assess the site-of-action of a given dust additive (i.e. the effect on allergen binding to primary or secondary antibody). The ELISAs are commercially available two-site monoclonal antibody assays for Der p 1, Der f 1, and Fel d 1, and a monoclonal/polyclonal assay for Bla g 1. Outcomes are reported in terms of reaction rate (colour change per unit time), which is directly proportional to the amount of bound allergen. RESULTS: In the initial screening experiments, carpet fresheners tended to decrease Der p 1 assay reaction rates, increase Der f 1 assay rates, and produce little change in Fel d 1 assay rates. Three carpet fresheners decreased Der p 1 assay rate responses in a concentration-dependent manner. Two carpet fresheners noticeably increased Der f 1 assay reaction rates in both the screening and the concentration-response tests. Powdered pesticides increased reaction rates in the Bla g 1 assays and increased the slope of the dilution curve compared with that of the purified allergen. Salt decreased the reaction rates of Bla g 1 assays at allergen concentrations greater than 0.01 U/mL. For each of the four allergens, the largest effects of dust additives occurred when secondary antibody binding was altered. CONCLUSIONS: Some common household dust components can introduce systematic error into immunoassays for arthropod allergens.  相似文献

House dust mite (HDM) allergen is a major cause of allergic disease. In this study, two-dimensional immunoblot and Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization tandem Time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) were used to identify Der f 31. After Der f 31 was cloned, expressed and purified, skin prick test (SPT), Immune inhibitory assays, Western blot, ELISA and asthmatic mouse model were employed to examine the allergenicity of recombinant Der f 31. The gene of Der f 31 includes 447 bps, and encoded 148 amino acids. Positive responses of SPT to r-Der f 31 were 32.5% in 43 HDM-allergic patients. r-Der f 31 can induce allergic pulmonary inflammation in the mouse model. In conclusion, Der f 31 is a novel subtype of dust mite allergens.  相似文献

Background Allergen avoidance is recommended when treating atopic asthma. Objectives Soft toys are often kept in close proximity to children and may serve as a source of exposure. Due to the potential danger from the mite allergen content of these toys, Der 1 from toys was measured. Methods We quantified the level of Der I (Der p 1 + Der f 1) in both 30 new and 174 old soft toys (weight 216 ± 2.5g, height 26.5 ± 3.4cm), as well as in washed and in vacuumed soft toys. Dust was collected using an electrie vacuum cleaner. Der 1 was measured by monoclonal antibody-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (MoAb-ELISA). Results In brand new toys Der 1 was 0. I μg/g of dust, and in toys used for 1 year, 9.0; 2 year, 22.2; 3 year, 18.9; and more than 4 year, 22.7μg/g or dust. Der 1 in new toys was measured every 4 months for 1 year. Der I rapidly increased 10- to 20-fold in the first 4 months, but there was no clear seasonal change. In toys washed using a chemical detergent or cleaned using a vacuum cleaner, there was a stastistically significant (P<0.00I) decrease in Der I in the washed group, but not in the vacuumed group. Conclusion These results confirm that mite allergens accumulate rapidly in toys to form a potentially important source of allergens and that washing toys with a chemical detergent is eflective in the reduction of allergens.  相似文献

Background Tropomyosins represent clinically relevant seafood allergens but the role of mite tropomyosin, Der p 10, in house dust mite (HDM) allergy has not been studied in detail. Objective To express and purify a recombinant Der p 10 with equivalent IgE reactivity as natural Der p 10 and to evaluate its IgE reactivity and allergenic activity in HDM‐allergic patients. Methods rDer p 10 was expressed in Escherichia coli, purified and characterized by mass spectrometry and circular dichroism. It was tested for IgE reactivity in 1322 HDM‐allergic patients. Detailed IgE‐reactivity profiles to six HDM allergens (Der p 1, 2, 5, 7, 10, 21) were established for subgroups of Der p 10‐positive and ‐negative patients. The allergenic activity of rDer p 10 was evaluated in basophil degranulation experiments. Results rDer p 10 is an α‐helical protein sharing IgE epitopes with nDer p 10. It is recognized by 15.2% of HDM‐allergic patients. Der p 10‐negative patients were primarily sensitized to Der p 1 and/or Der p 2, whereas Der p 10‐positive patients reacted to several other HDM allergens besides the major allergens (Der p 1, Der p 2) or showed a rather selective Der p 10 reactivity. The allergenic activity of Der p 10 was generally low but patients could be identified who suffered from clinically relevant HDM allergy due to Der p 10 sensitization. Conclusion and Clinical Relevance Der p 10 may be a diagnostic marker for HDM‐allergic patients with additional sensitization to allergens other than Der p 1 and Der p 2. BACKGROUND: Exposure to house dust mite (HDM) allergens is an important risk factor for childhood asthma. Knowledge of environmental determinants of HDM allergen levels is essential before designing rational avoidance measures. AIM: To investigate the effect of domestic characteristics on HDM allergen (Der p 1) levels in Melbourne homes. METHODS: Dust was collected from bed and floor of the bedrooms in 485 houses over a period of one year. Dust was analysed for Der p 1 levels using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Temperature and relative humidity were measured at the visit. Details of residential characteristics were collected using a questionnaire. Statistically significant predictors of Der p 1 levels (P < 0.05) were identified using multiple linear regression. RESULTS: High levels of Der p 1 were observed in the floors (geometric mean 17.2 microg/g fine dust) as well as in the beds (geometric mean 20.3 microg/g fine dust). Der p 1 levels in the floor dust were significantly lower in winter and spring. They were higher in houses built before 1980 and those with central heating, weather board walls, damp bedrooms or fitted old wool carpets. Der p 1 levels in bed dust were significantly higher in houses built before 1980, with wooden floors built on stumps, with high relative humidity, with visible mould in the room, in beds with an old mattress or in beds without a quilt. CONCLUSIONS: We would encourage construction of homes without carpets, wooden floors on stumps or weather board walls.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The house dust mite (HDM) Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus is an important source of allergens, which can cause allergic conditions. The cysteine protease activity of Der p 1 may enhance the potency of this major mite allergen through cleavage of CD23 and CD25 from the surface of immune cells, IgE independent mast cell activation, increases in epithelial cell permeability and inactivation of an endogenous serine protease inhibitor. Inhibition of the enzymatic activity of Der p 1 may therefore be of therapeutic benefit. OBJECTIVE: To examine the activity of PTL11028, a newly developed Der p 1 inhibitor, in a range of assays that directly or indirectly measure Der p 1 protease activity and to compare its activity to endogenous cysteine protease inhibitors. METHODS: The proteolytic activities of purified Der p 1 or HDM extract and inhibitory properties of PTL11028 were examined through cleavage of an artificial peptidyl substrate, cleavage of CD23 from human B cells and permeability studies on primary human bronchial epithelial cells. RESULTS: PTL11028 is a highly potent and specific Der p 1 inhibitor, being effective against both purified protease and Der p 1 within HDM extract. PTL11028 can completely inhibit Der p 1-mediated CD23 cleavage from human B cells and also reduces HDM-induced human bronchial epithelial cell permeability by 50%. Der p 1 is potently inhibited by cystatin A and to a lesser extent by cystatins C and E/M. CONCLUSION: PTL11028 is a highly potent and selective irreversible inhibitor of the cysteine protease activity of Der p 1, an activity that may be modulated in vivo by some human cystatins. PTL11028 prevents the Der p 1-mediated cleavage of CD23 from human B cells and significantly reduces HDM-induced permeabilization of the epithelial barrier. PTL11028 is an important tool to examine the biological effects of Der p 1 in a range of in vitro and in vivo model systems.  相似文献

The major allergen of Dermatophagoides microceras , Der m 1, as well as the allergens of D. pteronyssinus and D. farinae , Der p 1 and Der f 1, were analyzed in the homes of 111 asthmatic children in three climatic regions in Sweden. TTie numbers and species of mites were determined by microscopy, and circulating IgE antibodies against mites were measured. Der f 1 was the predominant house-dust-mite (HDM) allergen, Der p 1 the least often found, and Der m 1 represented 31% of the allergen load. However, in the Linkoping area, Der m 1 was the major HDM allergen (58%). Mite counts and allergen levels correlated well. Current exposure to HDM allergens at home was associated with the serum IgE antibody response to HDM in the children with no threshold level. Of the ehildren with IgE antibodies against HDM, 67% reacted to all three mites. Mite sensitization rates were marginally increased (7%) by the addition of IgE analysis of D. microceras to the routine analysis of IgE antibodies against D. pteronyssinus and D. farinae . Thus, Der m 1 may be an important HDM allergen and should be considered when HDM exposure data are assessed in areas with a climate like that of Sweden.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Information about the influence of housing and occupant characteristics on mite allergen concentrations is crucial to determine which methods could be used to decrease exposure of susceptible subjects. OBJECTIVES: To identify housing and occupant characteristics that are associated with mite allergen concentrations in house dust collected from living rooms and mattresses. METHODS: We collected dust samples from 750 homes in the northeastern US. The influence of various characteristics on concentrations of mite allergens (Der p 1 and Der f 1) was studied using multiple linear regression analysis. RESULTS: Some characteristics, like absence of air conditioners, the presence of mold or mildew, and a lower temperature were consistently associated with higher concentrations of both mite allergens in dust from all sampling locations. However, none of these factors changed Der p 1 or Der f 1 concentrations by more than a factor of 2. People of white ethnic background had roughly two times higher mite allergen concentrations, while family income, family size, and education level only marginally influenced mite allergen concentrations. CONCLUSIONS: Various housing characteristics have some influence on mite allergen concentrations, and could possibly be used to decrease exposure of susceptible subjects. However, only a limited percentage of the variation in mite allergen concentrations was explained by these characteristics.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Effective mite allergen avoidance measures are presumed to reduce airborne allergens yet the quantity in the air is rarely measured. OBJECTIVE: To monitor airborne allergen during a placebo-controlled mite allergen avoidance study. METHODS: Bedrooms of 56 atopic asthmatic children were randomly allocated to hot washing and encasing covers + acaricide (active regime) or placebo treatment. Dust was collected from the mattress, bedding and carpets; airborne allergen was measured using Casella samplers and dust settling in open Petri dishes. Der p 1, Der p 2 and Fel d 1 were measured. RESULTS: After 24 weeks of mite allergen avoidance the Casella air-samplers collected Der p 1 less frequently in active than placebo-treated bedrooms (0 vs. 29%, P<0.05) and Petri dishes in the active group collected less than baseline (0.2 vs. 0.6 ng/day P<0.05). Homes without cats had less cat allergen than cat-owning homes and when actively treated for 24 weeks showed a greater reduction (P = 0.03) in mattress cat allergen than the placebo group. CONCLUSION: Encasing covers and hot washing of bed linen reduced mite aeroallergen (and mattress cat allergen in the absence of cats). This could mean dual benefits to a patient sensitive to both mite and cat.  相似文献
