Objective

To describe the epidemiology of congenital rubella infections notified to the Australian Paediatric Surveillance Unit (APSU) from 2004 to 2013 and compare that with previously published APSU data for 1993–2003.

Methods

Active national surveillance for congenital rubella infection has been conducted through the APSU since 1993. Monthly reporting by child health clinicians according to pre-defined case criteria triggers requests for clinicians to provide de-identified clinical, epidemiological, and laboratory information. Data were extracted for cases reported between January 2004 and December 2013 and compared with previous years.

Results

Five cases of confirmed congenital rubella infection were identified during the reporting period. All five infants had defects consistent with congenital rubella syndrome (CRS). Four of the infants were born in Australia during the study period, and all were born to mothers born overseas. Three of the five mothers had not had rubella vaccination, and in two vaccination status was unknown, although both were from countries without routine rubella immunization programmes. Since 1993, there have been 57 notifications of congenital rubella infection to the APSU; 40 of these infants were born between January 1993 and December 2013, of whom 34 had confirmed CRS.

Conclusions

Congenital rubella infection in Australia is predominantly among children born to unimmunized immigrant mothers. Migrant women born in rubella endemic countries without routine immunization remain an important group to target for vaccination. Rubella-susceptible women, especially those in the early stages of pregnancy, should also carefully consider the risks of travelling to rubella endemic countries.  相似文献

Background

Rubella remains a common disease in Mainland China and is a major cause of severe birth defects from Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS). Rubella-containing vaccines were not included in China's National Expanded Program of Immunization (NEPI) until December 2007. In Shenzhen, women of childbearing age make up a large percentage of its migrant factory worker population. Understanding their immunity to rubella is critical in furthering efforts towards rubella vaccination programs.

Objectives

To investigate the seronegativity of rubella antibodies and evaluate potential associates of rubella immunity among female migrant factory workers in Shenzhen, China.

Subjects and Methods

: Serum samples were collected from 518 female migrant workers, aged 18–55, working in 44 randomly selected factories in Shenzhen, China during May through June of 2009. Samples were tested for Rubella Immunoglobulin G (IgG) using a commercial Enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay kit. Self-reported vaccination histories and socio-demographic information were also collected.

Results

Of 518 female workers, 402 (77.6%) were immune to rubella. Significant differences in seronegativity were dependent on region of origin, being without a job contract, age group, marital status and seronegativity of measles.

Conclusions

Seroprevalence of antibodies to rubella in Shenzhen, China amongst female migrant workers is too low to provide immunity in the population. Given the high numbers of women of childbearing age amongst Shenzhen migrant factory workers coming from many provinces across China, local health authorities in Shenzhen should consider combining new rubella immunization programs with existing measles immunization efforts in this population.  相似文献

Aim

To determine the age specific immunity profile for rubella from three discrete study populations in Papua New Guinea, and to inform policy regarding the possible introduction of rubella vaccine.

Background

In 2005, the Western Pacific Region (WPR), of which Papua New Guinea (PNG) is a member state, declared the goal of regional measles elimination by 2012. Recently, WPR has incorporated an accelerated control goal for rubella and congenital rubella syndrome (CRS). PNG currently recommends two doses of measles vaccination at 6 and 9 months of age with a monovalent measles vaccine, which does not include rubella vaccine.

Methods

Convenience samples were collected from 1326 eligible participants in PNG and assessed for rubella immunity using the Dade Behring Enzygnost™ Anti-Rubella-Virus enzyme immunoassay. Nearly 34% were collected during an age stratified prospective survey of febrile patients in Madang Province; approximately 49% were collected from women of childbearing age in East Sepik and Milne Bay Provinces. Remaining specimens were collected from 6 to 7-month-old infants in Port Moresby prior to receiving the first dose of measles vaccine.

Findings

Of all samples tested, 65.2% (95% confidence interval (CI): 62.6–67.8) had evidence of immunity to rubella infection. Of women more than 15 years of age, 91.6% (95% CI: 89.4–93.5) were immune. The force of infection was highest between 5 and 19 years of age.

Conclusions

Although a population-based sample was not used, our multi-centre study of the population immunity profile suggests that immunity against rubella is extremely high in most women of childbearing age, but women who become pregnant at an early age may be at high risk of rubella infection during pregnancy and potential delivery of an infant with CRS. Routine measles vaccine coverage, a proxy for measles-rubella vaccine coverage, as measured in recently published studies, is well below the WHO target of 80% coverage. Introduction of a child or infant dose of rubella vaccine requires caution and further study.  相似文献

Background

Haiti had set a national goal to eliminate measles and rubella, as well as congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) by 2010. A 2007–2008 nationwide measles and rubella vaccination campaign targeting 1–19 years, however, reached only 79% of the target population. To assess whether population immunity was adequate to support elimination, we conducted a national serosurvey.

Methods

We systematically selected 740 serum specimens collected from pregnant women in a 2012 national antenatal HIV sentinel serosurvey across four age strata: 15–19, 20–24, 25–29 and 30–39 years. Sera were tested for measles and rubella specific immunoglobulin G antibodies (IgG) using commercial immunoassays. We classified sera as seropositive, seronegative or indeterminate per manufacturer's instructions, and analyzed seroprevalence according to age strata, and rural or urban residence. We assessed immunity by estimating antibody concentrations in international units per milliliter (IU/mL) for seropositive and indeterminate sera. Measles IgG concentrations >0.12 IU/mL and rubella IgG concentrations >10 IU/mL were considered clinically protective.

Results

Of 740 sera, 696 (94.1%) were seropositive and 20 (2.7%) were indeterminate for measles IgG; overall 716 (96.8%) sera had IgG concentrations >0.12 IU/mL. For rubella IgG, 691 (93.4%) sera were seropositive and 1 (0.1%) was indeterminate; a total of 687 (92.8%) had IgG concentrations >10 IU/mL. Measles seropositivity varied across age strata (p = 0.003); seropositivity increased from 88.6% among 15–19 year olds to 98.4% among 30–39 year olds (Cochran–Armitage trend test ≤ 0.0001). Rubella seropositivity did not differ across age strata. There were no statistically significant differences in measles or rubella seropositivity by urban versus rural residence.

Conclusion

Despite previous low vaccination coverage for measles, results from this serosurvey indicate high levels of measles and rubella seropositivity in pregnant women, and contribute to the evidence for measles, rubella and CRS elimination from Haiti by the target date.  相似文献

Objective

This literature review addresses the following question: what elements point to an impact of routine chicken pox vaccination of children on the incidence of shingles?

Design

The search strategy involved an electronic search (Medline database via PubMed) and crossed references. Articles were selected by reading their abstracts.

Results

There were few published studies dealing with the question. A total of 13 publications reported seven longitudinal studies on the incidence of shingles and six mathematical models. The population studies were all American, and reported discordant results, four reporting an increase, and three, stability in the incidence of shingles. Four of the six mathematical models concerned the impact of routine chicken pox vaccination on shingles epidemiology. All showed a transitory short-term increase in the incidence of shingles (on condition that vaccine was effective and coverage high) and a long-term incidence of shingles lower than the current rate.

Conclusions

The currently available data is insufficient for any conclusion to be drawn as to the impact of routine pediatric chicken pox vaccination on the incidence of shingles. Monitoring the incidence of shingles in countries either recommending or not such vaccination should be maintained.  相似文献

Introduction

Immune response variations after vaccination are influenced by host genetic factors and demographic variables, such as race, ethnicity and sex. The latter have not been systematically studied in regard to live rubella vaccine, but are of interest for developing next generation vaccines for diverse populations, for predicting immune responses after vaccination, and for better understanding the variables that impact immune response.

Methods

We assessed associations between demographic variables, including race, ethnicity and sex, and rubella-specific neutralizing antibody levels and secreted cytokines (IFNγ, IL-6) in two independent cohorts (1994 subjects), using linear and linear mixed models approaches, and genetically defined racial and ethnic categorizations.

Results

Our replicated findings in two independent, large, racially diverse cohorts indicate that individuals of African descent have significantly higher rubella-specific neutralizing antibody levels compared to individuals of European descent and/or Hispanic ethnicity (p < 0.001).

Conclusion

Our study provides consistent evidence for racial/ethnic differences in humoral immune response following rubella vaccination.  相似文献

We investigated the impact of vaccination on rubella epidemiology in Australia, using a mathematical model fitted to Australian serosurvey data and incorporating pre-vaccination European estimates of rubella transmissibility. Mass infant measles–mumps–rubella (MMR) vaccination produced a 99% reduction in both rubella and congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) incidence by 2010 compared to the pre-vaccination era (1960–70). The model is consistent with reductions in CRS based on surveillance of congenital hearing impairment. Model simulations suggest that selective schoolgirl vaccination (1971–88) was associated with a 90% reduction in CRS incidence, but only a 1–4% reduction in rubella incidence. Our model predicted that these reductions in rubella were much less vulnerable to reductions in MMR vaccine coverage than for measles. In the future, a less than 15% decrease in MMR vaccine coverage is estimated to have minimal impact before 2060, but a 20% reduction may result in a 7-fold increase in rubella incidence, with the effective reproductive number R rising from 0.28 to 0.78 by 2060. The 99% reduction in both rubella and CRS incidence and low effective reproductive number (R ≤ 0.28) we documented after 2010 are consistent with Australia having achieved rubella elimination.  相似文献

Background

Vaccination of healthcare students is important to protect them from acquiring and transmitting vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) to high-risk patients and other healthcare workers (HCWs). The aim of the current study was to estimate the vaccination coverage, the susceptibility against VPDs, the knowledge and attitudes toward vaccinations of healthcare students studying at the Athens Technological Educational Institute.

Methods

The study was conducted during the academic year 2012–2013 using a standardized questionnaire.

Results

The mean knowledge score (correct answers) of healthcare students about the vaccines that are recommended by the Greek Ministry of Health for HCWs was 41%. Completed vaccination rates range from 19.6% for varicella to 80.2% for tetanus-diphtheria. A history of measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, or pertussis was reported by 8.2%, 4%, 5.4%, 70.4%, 1.5%, 0%, and 3% of students, respectively. Susceptibility rates were 20.5% against measles, 26.4% against mumps, 13.9% against rubella, 15.7% against varicella, 47.8% against hepatitis A, 17.3% against hepatitis B, and 19.8% against tetanus–diphtheria. Mandatory vaccination of HCWs was supported by 145 (96.7%) students.

Conclusions

There are significant immunity gaps against all VPDs among healthcare students in Athens. A system to easily identify non-immune students should be established in association with efficient reminder systems. Education of healthcare students about VPDs and vaccines will improve their attitudes toward vaccinations and their vaccination coverage. Mandatory vaccinations should be considered for HCWs in order to promote safety within healthcare facilities.  相似文献

Introduction

Healthcare personnel (HCP) are often under-vaccinated. The aim of this study was to evaluate occupational physicians’ potential role by assessing relations between their knowledge and attitudes regarding HCP vaccination and the extent to which official vaccination recommendations are communicated.

Methods

Cross-sectional survey, n = 135 occupational physicians.

Results

Occupational physicians who treat HCP recommend vaccinations more often to HCP when they have better knowledge of official vaccination recommendations and a more positive attitude towards vaccination compared to physicians with less such knowledge or a more negative attitude. The attitude towards vaccination most strongly affects whether occupational physicians recommend the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination: physicians with less positive attitudes recommend MMR to HCP in a more restricted way. A more positive attitude towards vaccination also relates to fewer misconceptions. Occupational physicians’ knowledge and attitude further influence the extent to which pregnant HCP receive vaccinations against influenza. Knowledge about official recommendations does not influence the recommendation of influenza vaccination for pregnant women.

Conclusions

Reasons for vaccination gaps in HCP might have their roots in occupational physicians’ incomplete knowledge of vaccination recommendations. Attitudes, which are related to misperceptions, also influence which vaccinations are recommended to HCP. Official recommendations, and not personal attitudes and misconceptions, should guide occupational vaccination behavior.  相似文献

Objective

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and general vaccinations, including measles–mumps–rubella (MMR) vaccine, in Japanese subjects, a population with high genetic homogeneity.

Patients and methods

A case–control study was performed. Cases (n = 189) were diagnosed with ASD, while controls (n = 224) were volunteers from general schools, matched by sex and birth year to cases. Vaccination history and prenatal, perinatal, and neonatal factors from the Maternal and Child Health handbook, which was part of each subject's file, were examined. To determine the relationship between potential risk factors and ASD, crude odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated, and the differences in mean values of the quantitative variables between cases and controls were analyzed using an unpaired t-test. Moreover, MMR vaccination and the effect of the number of vaccine injections were investigated using a conditional multiple regression model.

Results

For MMR vaccination, the OR was 1.04 (95% CI, 0.65–1.68), and no significant differences were found for the other vaccines. For all of the prenatal, perinatal and neonatal factors, there were no significant differences between cases and controls. Furthermore, regarding the presence of ASD, MMR vaccination and the number of vaccine injections had ORs of 1.10 (95% CI, 0.64–1.90) and 1.10 (95% CI, 0.95–1.26), respectively, in the conditional multiple regression model; no significant differences were found.

Conclusions

In this study, there were not any convincing evidences that MMR vaccination and increasing the number of vaccine injections were associated with an increased risk of ASD in a genetically homogeneous population. Therefore, these findings indicate that there is no basis for avoiding vaccination out of concern for ASD.  相似文献

Objectives

We predict the impact of paid leave in increasing influenza vaccinations for employees, thus decreasing workdays lost and healthcare visits resulting from infection.

Methods

Nationally representative data from the 2006–2010 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey were used. We examined working adults aged 18 and above (N = 51,471). Logistic regression measured the association of paid leave with flu vaccination. We predicted the impact on labor and healthcare markets if universal paid leave were provided.

Results

The proportion of workers receiving vaccination annually was higher for those with paid leave versus without paid leave (34.0% vs. 21.0%, P < 0.001). Adjusted odds of having a vaccination increased with paid leave vs. without paid leave (OR = 1.42, CI: 1.31–1.53). Universal paid leave is predicted to increase vaccinations by 1.6 million, resulting in 63.8 thousand fewer absences from work and 18.2 thousand fewer healthcare visits for the flu annually.

Conclusions

Our study suggests that employees without paid leave are significantly less likely to have had a flu vaccination. Expanding paid leave could substantially increase flu vaccination, resulting in fewer workdays lost to influenza and savings in healthcare costs.  相似文献

Aim

Acute cerebellar ataxia (ACA, sudden onset of truncal ataxia and gait disturbances) usually follows a benign illness (25% varicella). It is also described after vaccination, like MMR and varicella zoster virus (VZV). We will establish incidence rates of (varicella related) ACA and assess the attributable risk of vaccination to ACA in the Netherlands.

Method

Data on ACA in children, following infections, like varicella, and vaccinations, obtained from prospective, active pediatric surveillance and passive surveillance on adverse events following immunizations (AEFI) were compared with hospitalization data for ataxia. Capture–recapture (CRC) method was used to estimate the burden of ACA in the Netherlands.

Results

45 children with ACA were included (44 and 1 reported by pediatric and AEFI surveillance respectively, 30 were hospitalized). Chickenpox preceded ACA in 15 cases, one case followed MMR. Of the hospitalization reports, 13 fulfilled the criteria for ACA. Using CRC the estimated number of hospitalized ACA cases was 42. For varicella related ACA, this estimate was 10, resulting in an incidence rate of 0.7:100,000 (95%CI 0.52–0.94, all cases) and 0.17:100,000 (95%CI 0.09–0.31, varicella related cases) for children under 15 years of age.

Conclusion

The incidence rates were comparable with other studies. We found no association with MMR, but chickenpox was clearly related to ACA. According to age-specific seroprevalence data the incidence rate of ACA was 5:100,000 VZV infections for children up to 5 years, compared to an ACA-reporting rate of 0.15:100,000 doses VZV-vaccine. Therefore, uptake of VZV-vaccine in the immunization programme will diminish the incidence rate of ACA.  相似文献

In 2003, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) adopted a resolution calling for rubella and congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) elimination in the Americas by the year 2010. Elimination was defined as the interruption of endemic rubella virus transmission in all countries of North America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean for more than 12 months and no occurrence of CRS cases attributed to endemic transmission. To accomplish this goal, PAHO developed a rubella and CRS elimination strategy (3) to 1) introduce rubella-containing vaccine (RCV) into routine vaccination programs of all countries for children aged 12 months and reach >/=95% coverage in all municipalities, 2) conduct a one-time mass campaign among adolescents and adults and periodic follow-up campaigns among children aged <5 years, and 3) integrate rubella surveillance with measles surveillance and initiate CRS surveillance. During 1998-2006, confirmed rubella cases decreased 98% (from 135,947 to 2,998) in the Americas. However, in 2007, rubella outbreaks with a total of 13,014 cases occurred in three countries (Argentina, Brazil, and Chile), primarily in males not included in previous vaccination campaigns. This report summarizes overall progress toward reaching the 2010 goal of eliminating rubella and CRS. With completion of campaigns in Argentina, Brazil, and Haiti, all countries will have implemented the recommended PAHO strategy by the end of 2008, with the expectation of reaching the 2010 rubella and CRS elimination goal.  相似文献

Background

There is concern about a possible association between influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 vaccination and narcolepsy. In this study, we assessed the incidence and incidence rate of narcolepsy in the South Korean population before and after the implementation of an A(H1N1)pdm09 vaccination campaign to see if vaccination led to a change in the occurrence of narcolepsy.

Methods

We conducted an ecological study, comparing incident cases and incidence rates for newly diagnosed narcolepsy case-patients in South Korea, between July 2006 and June 2011. We used data from the Health Insurance Review Agency and Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which have limited information on case ascertainment. During vaccination campaign period, South Korea used non-adjuvanted and MF59-adjuvanted A(H1N1)pdm09 vaccines.

Results

Generally, incidence rate was highest in prepandemic period. No trend toward increase in the incidence of narcolepsy after pandemic period was found. Observation of incidence by season did not suggest any time pattern for occurrence of narcolepsy.

Conclusion

No increase in cases or incidence rate for narcolepsy during the A(H1N1)pdm09 vaccination campaign was found in South Korea. Our data do not support the use of MF59-adjuvanted or non-adjuvanted A(H1N1)pdm09 vaccine as a trigger for narcolepsy on a population level.  相似文献

Background

Understanding the potential for vaccination to change cytomegalovirus (CMV) epidemiology is important for developing CMV vaccines and designing clinical trials.

Methods

We constructed a deterministic, age-specific and time-dependent mathematical model of pathogen transmission, parameterized using CMV seroprevalence from the United States and Brazil, to predict the impact of vaccination on congenital CMV infection.

Findings

Concurrent vaccination of young children and adolescents would result in the greatest reductions in congenital CMV infections in populations with moderate and high baseline maternal seroprevalence. Such a vaccination strategy, assuming 70% vaccine efficacy, 90% coverage and 5-year duration of protection, could ultimately prevent 30–50% of congenital CMV infections. At equilibrium, this strategy could result in a 30% reduction in congenital CMV infections due to primary maternal infection in the United States but a 3% increase in Brazil. The potential for an increase in congenital CMV infections due to primary maternal infections in Brazil was not predicted with use of a vaccine that confers protection for greater than 5 years.

Interpretation

Modeling suggests that vaccination strategies that include young children will result in greater declines in congenital CMV infection than those restricted to adolescents or women of reproductive age. Our study highlights the critical need for better understanding of the relative contribution of type of maternal infection to congenital CMV infection and disease, the main focus of vaccine prevention.  相似文献

Objective

Varicella vaccination has not been introduced worldwide, especially in developing countries. The present study assesses the potential epidemiological and economic impact of one-dose and two-dose varicella vaccination schemes in Colombia, a south American upper middle-income country.

Methods

A decision-tree based model was developed. Varicella cases were estimated based on previous reports of seropositivity within the country. Cost per life-year gained (LYG) was the main outcome measure. Costs from the health care system perspective were expressed in 2008 American dollars. Deterministic and probabilistic sensitivity analyses were performed.

Results

In Colombia, there would be 700,197 varicella cases in an average year plus 60 yearly deaths without vaccination. It was estimated that health care costs for all cases during 30 years period could be around US $88,734,735 (with discount). Cost per LYG of one-dose vaccination was US $2519 and using a two-dose scheme was US $5728.

Conclusion

Vaccinating against varicella in Colombia, an upper middle-income South American country is cost-effective under the assumptions used in this study. Decision-makers should consider introducing universal varicella vaccination in Colombia, given the effectiveness, safety and cost-effectiveness of this intervention.  相似文献

Background

Pandemic A/H1N1 influenza vaccine coverage varied widely across countries. To understand the factors influencing pandemic influenza vaccination and to guide the development of successful vaccination programs for future influenza pandemics, we identified and summarized studies examining the determinants of vaccination during the 2009 influenza pandemic.

Methods

We performed a systematic literature review using the PubMED electronic database from June 2009 to February 2011. We included studies examining an association between a possible predictive variable and actual receipt of the pandemic A/H1N1 influenza vaccine. We excluded studies examining intention or willingness to receive the vaccine.

Results

Twenty-seven studies were identified from twelve countries. Pandemic influenza vaccine coverage varied from 4.8% to 92%. Coverage varied by population sub-group, country, and assessment method used. Most studies used questionnaires to estimate vaccine coverage, however seven (26%) used a vaccination registry. Factors that positively influenced pandemic influenza vaccination were: male sex, younger age, higher education, being a doctor, being in a priority group for which vaccination was recommended, receiving a prior seasonal influenza vaccination, believing the vaccine to be safe and/or effective, and obtaining information from official medical sources.

Conclusions

Vaccine coverage during the pandemic varied widely across countries and population sub-groups. We identified some consistent determinants of this variation that can be targeted to increase vaccination during future influenza pandemics.  相似文献

Background:

Bhutan has attained universal child immunization since 1991. Since then, immunization coverage is maintained at high level through routine immunization, periodic National Immunization Days, and mop up campaigns. Despite high immunization coverage, every year, significant numbers of clinically suspected measles cases were reported.

Objective:

To assess the cause of continuing high “suspected measles cases” and take appropriate public health measures.

Materials and Methods:

Febrile rash outbreaks occurred in several districts in 2003. These episodes were investigated. Simultaneously, a retrospective data search revealed evidence of congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) in the country.

Results:

Thirty five percent of the tested samples were positive for rubella but none for measles. There were evidences of the presence of CRS. This was discussed in the annual health conference 2004, amongst health policy makers and district heads who recommended that a possibility of inclusion of rubella as an antigen be looked into. A nationwide measles and rubella immunization campaign was conducted in 2006 followed by introduction of rubella vaccine in the immunization schedule.

Conclusion:

Febrile rash can be caused by a host of viral infections. Following universal measles immunization, it is pertinent that febrile rash be looked in the light of rubella infections. Following the introduction of rubella vaccination in the national immunization schedule, there has been significant reduction of febrile rash episodes, cases of rubella, and congenital rubella syndrome.  相似文献

Background

The compliance with recommendations for Pertussis vaccination was assessed in the Lyon population through vaccination coverage (VC).

Methods

A cross-sectional study was conducted in collaboration with 10 private biological analysis laboratories between October 2010 and March 2012, on 1930 adults (>19 years of age) from the Lyon area. Proof of vaccination (PV) was requested to prove the current vaccination status.

Results

A percentage of 30.3% (585/1930) of surveyed individuals provided a PV. A positive vaccination status was confirmed in 10.76% [CI 95% 8.45–13.48] (63/585) and didn’t vary in relation to gender (P = 0.57), age (P = 0.06), or level of schooling (P = 0.41). Coverage vaccination was not updated in parents with childbearing project (84.2% (64/76) [CI 95% 74.7–91.2]) or people in contact with children less than 6 years of age (83.6% (87/104) [CI 95% 75.6–89.8]). Pertussis vaccination wasn’t confirmed in 80.0% (124/155) of those who thought being vaccine up to date.

Conclusions

The Lyon population poorly complied with the cocooning strategy implemented in 2004. The pertussis vaccine coverage confirmed by a PV proved the inadequate rate of vaccination compared to objectives. It is mandatory to strengthen the vaccinal policy for this vaccine booster.  相似文献

Introduction

The yellow-fever vaccination center of the Tourcoing Hospital (France) has been accessible to Belgian travelers since its opening in 1994.

Method

The authors reported the specificities of these consultations during the year 2010, by retrospectively analyzing electronic medical records.

Results

Some medical issues encountered during the consultation were due to differences in vaccination schedules: for the polio vaccine, since the last dose is administered between 5 and 7 years of age in Belgium; and for the measles vaccine since a late two-dose schedule (second dose between 12 and 13 years of age) is recommended in this country. Moreover, some specific vaccines are available only in Belgium: a diphtheria-tetanus bivalent vaccine, and a live attenuated oral typhoid vaccine.

Discussion

The specificities of the Belgian border traveler consultation in our French yellow-fever center are due to a difference in European vaccination schedules; the physician must be aware of these.

Conclusion

The physician has to propose updates on vaccination schedules, and be aware of yellow-fever vaccine compatibility with vaccines recently administered in Belgium.  相似文献
