The thesis of this article is that for family nursing to be effectively provided, a transcultural perspective must be incorporated. The underlying rationale for the integration of transcultural knowledge and values is presented, as well as an approach for integrating cultural aspects into family assessment and intervention. Black and Latino families are discussed in terms of their culturally-derived familial patterns.  相似文献

This critical cultural discourse analysis explores the internal logic of Transcultural Nursing Theory and interrogates the underlying assumptions, goals, and strategies of this approach to race and other human and social differences. Drawing on examples from nursing textbooks and policy documents, I assert that Transcultural Nursing Theory operates from a liberal standpoint that focuses attention on a broadly defined, but narrowly applied, concept of culture. The goal of providing culturally competent care and the processes used to achieve that outcome reinforce, rather than transform, the social practices and relations that institutionalize the dominant approach to social and human differences.  相似文献

Conducting transnational programs can be a very rewarding activity for a School, Faculty or University. Apart from increasing the profile of the university, the conduct of transnational programs can also provide the university with openings for business opportunities, consultative activities, and collaborative research. It can also be a costly exercise placing an enormous strain on limited resources with little reward for the provider. Transnational ventures can become nonviable entities in a very short period of time due to unanticipated global economic trends. Transnational courses offered by Faculties of Business and Computing are commonplace, however, there is a growing number of health science programs, particularly nursing that are being offered transnational. This paper plans an overview of several models employed for the delivery of transnational nursing courses and discusses several key issues pertaining to conducting courses outside the host university's country.  相似文献

Today a new generation of nurses with different cultural insights and a deeper appreciation of human life and values are developing a sensitivity for culturally appropriate individualized care. Although literature on clinical approaches in cultural diverse situations is mushrooming, relatively few theories on transcultural nursing provide a systematic method for comprehensive nursing assessment, which is necessary for both the nursing practitioner and the researcher to provide appropriate nursing care tailored for each client. Below an outline of the areas that need to be assessed when working with clients from multicultural populations.  相似文献

There has been increasing interest in the nursing care of patients from minority ethnic communities in recent years. This has been linked to the promotion of transcultural competence within the profession in order to equip nurses to provide high quality and appropriate care within a multi-ethnic society. Nurse education has been identified as an ideal vehicle for the promotion of transcultural competence in both students and qualified nursing staff. However, many of the current approaches to transcultural education appear to reflect a single ethnocentric approach to transcultural education. This fails to appreciate the diversity which exists within both the profession and minority ethnic communities. The paper is written from a minority ethnic perspective and explores some of the issues for transcultural nurse education arising from this ethnocentric approach. It discusses some common approaches underpinning the provision of transcultural education and the potential consequences for a multi-ethnic profession seeking to 'value diversity'. It concludes that a review of some of the current approaches to transcultural education is required and suggests some practical points for consideration.  相似文献

Transcultural nursing care of Arab Muslims   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Nursing care of the Arab Muslim client can be extremely rewarding providing the nurse is knowledgeable about important features of the culture. Knowledge of the complex social structure, world view and cultural context features is critical in promoting a sense of care for these clients. The centrality of religion and the family are closely interrelated and reflect many aspects of health care. This article has presented an overview of some of these features. The importance of culturological assessment for each client and family cannot be over emphasized, since cultural background, education and degree of acculturation will lead to variation in these patterns. The use of Leininger's theory and modes of nursing interventions can be most helpful as a basis for decision-making processes related to care of the Arab Muslim client. Only through knowledge, respect and sensitivity can nurses be effective in meeting the goals of the theory which is culturally congruent care to all clients of diverse cultures.  相似文献
