The present study investigated the brain dynamics accompanying spatial navigation based on distinct reference frames. Participants preferentially using an allocentric or an egocentric reference frame navigated through virtual tunnels and reported their homing direction at the end of each trial based on their spatial representation of the passage. Task-related electroencephalographic (EEG) dynamics were analyzed based on independent component analysis (ICA) and subsequent clustering of independent components. Parietal alpha desynchronization during encoding of spatial information predicted homing performance for participants using an egocentric reference frame. In contrast, retrosplenial and occipital alpha desynchronization during retrieval covaried with homing performance of participants using an allocentric reference frame. These results support the assumption of distinct neural networks underlying the computation of distinct reference frames and reveal a direct relationship of alpha modulation in parietal and retrosplenial areas with encoding and retrieval of spatial information for homing behavior.  相似文献

Although most research on navigation in aging focuses on allocentric processing deficits, impaired strategy switching may also contribute to navigational decline. Using a specifically designed task involving navigating a town-like virtual environment, we assessed the ability of young and old participants to switch from following learned routes to finding novel shortcuts. We found large age differences in the length of routes taken during testing and in use of shortcuts, as, while nearly all young participants switched from the egocentric route-following strategy to the allocentric wayfinding strategy, none of the older participants stably switched. Although secondary tasks confirmed that older participants were impaired both at strategy switching and allocentric processing, the difficulty in using shortcuts was selectively related to impaired strategy switching. This may in turn relate to dysfunction of the prefrontal-noradrenergic network responsible for coordinating switching behavior. We conclude that the large age difference in performance at the shortcutting task demonstrates for the first time, how strategy switching deficits can have a severe impact on navigation in aging.  相似文献

Eye-hand coordination is crucial for everyday visuo-haptic object-manipulation. Noninformative vision has been reported to improve haptic spatial tasks relying on world-based reference frames. The current study investigated whether the degree of visuo-haptic congruity systematically affects haptic task performance. Congruent and parametrically varied incongruent visual orientation cues were presented while participants manually explored the orientation of a reference bar stimulus. Participants were asked to haptically match this reference orientation by turning a test bar either to a parallel or mirrored orientation, depending on the instruction. While parallel matching can only be performed correctly in a world-based frame, mirror matching (in the mid-sagittal plane) can also be achieved in a body-centered frame. We revealed that visuo-haptic incongruence affected parallel but not mirror matching responses in size and direction. Parallel matching did not improve when congruent visual orientation cues were provided throughout a run, and mirror matching even deteriorated. These results show that there is no positive effect of visual input on haptic performance per se. Tasks, which favor a body-centered frame are immune to incongruent visual input, while such input parametrically modulates performance on world-based haptic tasks.  相似文献

The location of an object in peripersonal space can be represented with respect to our body (i.e., egocentric frame of reference) or relative to contextual features and other objects (i.e., allocentric frame of reference). In the current study, we sought to determine whether the frame, or frames, of visual reference supporting motor output is influenced by reach trajectories structured to maximize visual feedback utilization (i.e., controlled online) or structured largely in advance of movement onset via central planning mechanisms (i.e., controlled offline). Reaches were directed to a target embedded in a pictorial illusion (the induced Roelofs effect: IRE) and advanced knowledge of visual feedback was manipulated to influence the nature of reaching control as reported by Zelaznik et al. (J Mot Behav 15:217–236, 1983). When vision could not be predicted in advance of movement onset, trajectories showed primary evidence of an offline mode of control (even when vision was provided) and endpoints demonstrated amplified sensitivity to the illusory (i.e., allocentric) features of the IRE. In contrast, reaches performed with reliable visual feedback evidenced a primarily online mode of control and showed increased visuomotor resistance to the IRE. These findings suggest that the manner a reaching response is structured differentially influences the weighting of allocentric and egocentric visual information. More specifically, when visual feedback is unavailable or unpredictable, the weighting of allocentric visual information for the advanced planning of a reach trajectory is increased.

What humans haptically perceive as parallel is often far from physically parallel. These deviations from parallelity are highly significant and very systematic. There exists accumulating evidence, both psychophysical and neurophysiological, that what is haptically parallel is decided in a frame of reference intermediate to an allocentric and an egocentric one. The central question here concerns the nature of the egocentric frame of reference. In the literature, various kinds of egocentric reference frames are mentioned for haptic spatial tasks, such as hand-centered, arm-centered, and body-centered frames of reference. Thus far, it has not been possible to distinguish between body-centered, arm-centered, and hand-centered reference frames in our experiments, as hand and arm orientation always covaried with distance from the body-midline. In the current set of experiments the influence of body-centered and hand-centered reference frames could be dissociated. Subjects were asked to make a test bar haptically parallel to a reference bar in five different conditions, in which their hands were oriented straight ahead, rotated to the left, rotated to the right, rotated outward or rotated inward. If the reference frame is body-centered, the deviations should be independent of condition. If, on the other hand, the reference frame is hand-centered, the deviations should vary with condition. The results show that deviation size varies strongly with condition, exactly in the way predicted by the influence of a hand-centered egocentric frame of reference. Interestingly, this implies that subjects do not sufficiently take into account the orientation of their hands.  相似文献

A fundamental aspect of goal-directed behavior concerns the closure of motion-gaps in a timely fashion. In this context, the critical variable is the time-to-closure, called tau (Lee in Perception 5:437–459, 1976), and is defined as the ratio of the current distance-to-goal gap over the current instantaneous speed towards the goal. In this study, we investigated the neural mechanisms of speed and tau in pointing hand movements by recording MEG activity from the whole brain of 20 right-handed healthy human subjects operating a joystick with their right hand. The relations between neural signals and speed and tau were analyzed using an autoregressive multiple regression model, where the time-varying MEG signal was the dependent variable and the corresponding value of speed and tau were the independent variables. With respect to speed, we found that 81% of sensors showed significant relations over the left frontal-parietal, left parieto-temporal, and, less prominently, the right temporo-occipital sensor space. These results document the widespread involvement of brain areas with movement speed, especially in the left hemisphere (i.e., contralateral to the moving limb), in accord with previous studies. With respect to tau, 22% of sensors showed significant relations over the parietal (bilaterally), right parietal-temporal, and, less prominently, the left temporo-occipital sensor space. The tau effects often occurred concurrently with speed effects and spatially overlapped in the left fronto-parietal sensors. These findings document for the first time the time-varying, dynamic processing of information regarding tau in specific brain areas, including the right parietal cortex. This is of special interest, for that area has been found to be involved in processing information concerning the duration of time intervals in perceptual tasks (Harrington et al. in J Neurosci 18:1085–1095, 1998; Rao et al. in Nat Neurosci 4:317–323, 2001). Since tau is itself a time interval, we hypothesize that the right parietal focus of tau processing observed in this study reflects the ongoing processing of tau as an interval for a timely arrival of the hand to the target.  相似文献

Previous work on the coordination between the upper and lower limbs has invariably shown that its accuracy/stability is primarily determined by the mutual direction between limbs in extrinsic space and not by muscle relationships. Here we show that muscle grouping does play a critical role in coordination of the arm and leg, in addition to direction. More specifically, the simultaneous activation of isofunctional muscles and/or limb movements proceeding in the same direction, results in more successful performance than the alternated activation of isofunctional muscles and/or movements occurring in different directions. In the absence of isofunctional muscle coupling, the mutual direction between the limbs plays a more prominent role in determining coordinative accuracy. These coordination constraints can largely account for the observed differences between ipsilateral and heterolateral limb coordination. The findings are discussed in view of the coalition of coordination constraints.  相似文献

When reaching to remembered target locations following an intervening eye movement a systematic pattern of error is found indicating eye-centred updating of visuospatial memory. Here we investigated if implicit targets, defined only by allocentric visual cues, are also updated in an eye-centred reference frame as explicit targets are. Participants viewed vertical bars separated by varying distances, and horizontal lines of equivalently varying lengths, implying a “target” location at the midpoint of the stimulus. After determining the implied “target” location from only the allocentric stimuli provided, participants saccaded to an eccentric location, and reached to the remembered “target” location. Irrespective of the type of stimulus reaching errors to these implicit targets are gaze-dependent, and do not differ from those found when reaching to remembered explicit targets. Implicit target locations are coded and updated as a function of relative gaze direction with respect to those implied locations just as explicit targets are, even though no target is specifically represented.  相似文献

Insights into the functional nature and neuroanatomy of spatial attention have come from research in neglect patients but to date many conflicting results have been reported. The novelty of the current study is that we used voxel-wise analyses based on information from segmented grey and white matter tissue combined with diffusion tensor imaging to decompose neural substrates of different neglect symptoms. Allocentric neglect was associated with damage to posterior cortical regions (posterior superior temporal sulcus, angular, middle temporal and middle occipital gyri). In contrast, egocentric neglect was associated with more anterior cortical damage (middle frontal, postcentral, supramarginal, and superior temporal gyri) and damage within subcortical structures. Damage to intraparietal sulcus (IPS) and the temporo-parietal junction (TPJ) was associated with both forms of neglect. Importantly, we showed that both disorders were associated with white matter lesions suggesting damage within long association and projection pathways such as the superior longitudinal, superior fronto-occipital, inferior longitudinal, and inferior fronto-occipital fascicule, thalamic radiation, and corona radiata. We conclude that distinct cortical regions control attention (a) across space (using an egocentric frame of reference) and (b) within objects (using an allocentric frame of reference), while common cortical regions (TPJ, IPS) and common white matter pathways support interactions across the different cortical regions.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to measure the average anterior commissure (AC) volume of normal subjects in their 20s or 40s and to determine the effects of gender and age on AC volume. Magnetic resonance brain images were obtained for 93 people in their 20s (46 men, 47 women) and 87 in their 40s (36 men, 51 women). To investigate the effect of gender and age on AC volume, two-way analysis of variance, which used gender (two levels) and age (two levels) as independent variables, was employed. For subjects in their 20s, there was no difference in AC volume between genders, but for those in their 40s, the AC volume of males was less than that of females. There was no difference in AC volume between females in their 20s or 40s; however, the AC volume of men in their 40s was less than that for those in their 20s. There were gender-influenced differences in AC volume changes related to aging.  相似文献

Aging effects have often been reported for spatial navigation performance. Moreover, navigation performance is thought to be an early marker of pathological aging. Yet, the cognitive complexity of navigation and large individual variation in healthy population make it difficult to pinpoint the precise aging mechanisms involved. We performed a systematic literature review with specific attention to functional dissociation between the tasks used and methodological characteristics. The literature search resulted in 39 articles in which age comparisons were made for large-scale navigation measures. Outcomes were categorized into the domains of landmark, location (egocentric and allocentric), and path knowledge (route and survey). Results indicate that clear functional dissociation exists between these navigation knowledge domains. Aging effects are found for path knowledge most convincingly, while landmark and egocentric location knowledge are frequently omitted in assessment. The participant samples reported often neglect adult, middle aged participants, while this group could be highly informative to the aging process as well. Moreover, having a clear image of age-related performance across the lifespan could be a valuable addition towards the early detection of pathological aging through navigation performance.  相似文献

We investigated brain activity associated with recognition of appropriate action selection based on allocentric perspectives using functional magnetic resonance imaging. The participants observed video clips in which one person (responder) passed one of three objects after a request by a second person (requester). The requester was unable to see one of the three objects because it was occluded by another object. Participants were asked to judge the appropriateness of the responder's action selection based on the visual information from the requester's perspective (i.e., allocentric perspective), not the responder's perspective (i.e., egocentric perspective). The experimental factors included the congruency of request interpretation and the appropriateness of action selection. The results showed that brain regions including the right temporo-parieto-occipital (TPO) junction and the left inferior parietal lobule (IPL) were more activated when the interpretation of the requested object differed between the egocentric and allocentric perspectives than when it was the same (the effect of incongruency for consistency). On the other hand, greater activation was found in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) when the incongruency effect was compared only between the conditions of appropriate action selection (the interaction effect). These results suggest that both the TPO junction and IPL are involved in obtaining visual information from the allocentric perspective when visual information based on only the egocentric perspective is insufficient to interpret another person's request. The right DLPFC is likely related to this process to override the interference of action selection based on the egocentric perspective.  相似文献

目的:分析年幼小鼠性别、年龄与CD3、CD4、CD8免疫参数表达的关系。方法:分离3—9周小鼠胸腺、脾脏T淋巴细胞,FACS分析细胞表面CD3、CD4、CD8的表达;CFSE标记后细胞,加入ConA、抗TCR抗体、PMA IONO刺激剂培养72小时,流式细胞仪分析的方法比较不同刺激剂作用下雌、雄小鼠T细胞的增殖。结果:结果胸腺和脾脏表面CD3、CD4、CD8的表达与性别无明显关系,6-9周小鼠脾脏CD3^ 细胞明显多于3—4周小鼠;胸腺细胞的增殖与年龄、性别无关,而3周雌性小鼠脾细胞对PMA IONO刺激后的增殖应答比雄性明显,4-6周雄性小鼠脾细胞的增殖能力强于雌性小鼠,7—8周雌性小鼠脾细胞对抗TCR抗体的应答能力明显减小。结论:免疫系统的雌雄异型可能早于青春期。  相似文献

Summary Twenty male and 20 female non-professional tennis players were classified into two different age groups (n=10 per group): young active men (30.4±3.3 years), young active women (27.5±4.3 years), elderly active men (64.4±3.7 years), and elderly active women (65.3±4.5 years). These individuals were matched (n = 10 per group) according to sex, age, height and mass to sedentary individuals of the same socio-economical background: young sedentary men (29.2±3.4 years), young sedentary women (25.6±4.4 years), elderly sedentary men (65.2 ± 3.2 years) and elderly sedentary women (65.6±4.4 years). An isokinetic dynamometer was used to measure the strength of the knee extensors and flexors (two separate occasions) and the endurance of the extensors. Vastus lateralis electromyogram (EMG) was measured concomitantly. Significant sex, age and exercise effects (P<0.001) were observed for peak torque of both muscle groups. The effect of age on extensor strength was more pronounced at high speeds where men were also able to generate larger relative torques than women.No age or sex effects were noted for muscle endurance. However, muscles of active individuals demonstrated a greater resistance to fatigue than those of sedentary individuals. In conclusion, men were found to be stronger than women, age was associated with a decrease in muscle strength, but not of muscle endurance, and tennis players were stronger and had muscles that were more resistant to fatigue than their sedentary pairs in both age groups. Although the results of this study cannot be generalized to other types of sports activities, they do give credence to the health benefits of moderate exercise in the maintenance of muscle function with age.  相似文献

The present study addressed the role of head movements in the coordination of the homologous upper or lower limbs in supine normal subjects. Consistent with previous research, in-phase mirror symmetrical movements were performed more accurately and consistently than anti-phase movements. However, inclusion of head movements destabilized in-phase but not anti-phase homologous limb coordination, in contrast to previous work demonstrating a higher vulnerability of anti-phase than in-phase coordination to various experimental perturbations. It was observed that the head moved in the same direction as the limbs during anti- but not during in-phase coordination. Furthermore, the interlimb patterns also affected the head rotations that were lower in spatiotemporal consistency and less consistently coupled with the limbs during in-phase than during anti-phase coordination. These findings provide new insights into the coalition of egocentric and allocentric constraints during interlimb coordination.  相似文献

In advance of grasping a visual object embedded within fins-in and fins-out Müller-Lyer (ML) configurations, participants formulated a premovement grip aperture (GA) based on the size of a neutral preview object. Preview objects were smaller, veridical, or larger than the size of the to-be-grasped target object. As a result, premovement GA associated with the small and large preview objects required significant online reorganization to appropriately grasp the target object. We reasoned that such a manipulation would provide an opportunity to examine the extent to which the visuomotor system engages egocentric and/or allocentric visual cues for the online, feedback-based control of action. It was found that the online reorganization of GA was reliably influenced by the ML figures (i.e., from 20 to 80% of movement time), regardless of the size of the preview object, albeit the small and large preview objects elicited more robust illusory effects than the veridical preview object. These results counter the view that online grasping control is mediated by absolute visual information computed with respect to the observer (e.g., Glover in Behav Brain Sci 27:3-78, 2004; Milner and Goodale in The visual brain in action 1995). Instead, the impact of the ML figures suggests a level of interaction between egocentric and allocentric visual cues in online action control.  相似文献

Sister chromatid exchange (SCE) was studied in cultured lymphocytes from a limited series of 21 like-sexed twin pairs; 11 monozygotic (MZ) and 10 dizygotic (DZ) pairs. The 18 subjects, who were between 57 and 61 years old, had an SCE mean value () of 8.0 whereas the 24 subjects between 33 and 39 years of age had a mean of 6.8. The difference was statistically significant ( P <0.001). The effect of age appeared to be present in both sexes. No significant difference was found between females (%7.3) and males (%7.5), nor between smokers (%7.3) and non-smokers (%7.4). Drug users had a slightly higher mean (%7.9) than non-users (= 7.0) ( P < 0.05). This trend was found in each age group. The within-pair variance was slightly higher in DZ than in MZ pairs. The difference was not significant. We conclude that genetic factors are probably not a major source of subject variation in SCE mean value.  相似文献

Objective

We examined how navigation, defined as the assessment and alleviation of barriers to adequate health care, influences patients’ perspectives on the quality of their cancer care.

Methods

We conducted post-study patient interviews from a randomized controlled trial (usual care vs. patient navigation services) from cancer diagnosis through treatment completion. Patients were recruited from 11 primary care, hospital and community oncology practices in New York. We interviewed patients about their expectations and experience of patient navigation or, for non-navigated patients, other sources of assistance.

Results

Thirty-five patients newly diagnosed with breast or colorectal cancer. Valued aspects of navigation included emotional support, assistance with information needs and problem-solving, and logistical coordination of cancer care. Unmet cancer care needs expressed by patients randomized to usual care consisted of lack of assistance or support with childcare, household responsibilities, coordination of care, and emotional support.

Conclusion

Cancer patients value navigation. Instrumental benefits were the most important expectations for navigation from navigated and non-navigated patients. Navigated patients received emotional support and assistance with information needs, problem-solving, and logistical aspects of cancer care coordination.

Practice implications

Navigation services may help improve cancer care outcomes important to patients by addressing fragmented, confusing, uncoordinated, or inefficient care.  相似文献

This study assessed age differences in navigational behavior in a virtual Morris water maze (vMWM) and examined the ability of older adults to develop cognitive maps after vMWM experience. Compared with younger participants, older volunteers traversed a longer linear distance to locate the hidden platform. On the probe trial, younger volunteers spent a greater proportion of their total distance traveled in proximity to the platform and had more platform intersections. Analysis of map reproductions demonstrated that older participants used proximal objects to locate the goal but did not use room-geometry cues to aid navigation. These findings demonstrate age-related deficits on a laboratory measure of place learning and suggest that deficiencies in allocentric mapping may contribute to these deficits.  相似文献

A great effort has been made to identify crucial cognitive markers that can be used to characterize the cognitive profile of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Because topographical disorientation is one of the earliest clinical manifestation of AD, an increasing number of studies have investigated the spatial deficits in this clinical population. In this systematic review, we specifically focused on experimental studies investigating allocentric and egocentric deficits to understand which spatial cognitive processes are differentially impaired in the different stages of the disease. First, our results highlighted that spatial deficits appear in the earliest stages of the disease. Second, a need for a more ecological assessment of spatial functions will be presented. Third, our analysis suggested that a prevalence of allocentric impairment exists. Specifically, two selected studies underlined that a more specific impairment is found in the translation between the egocentric and allocentric representations. In this perspective, the implications for future research and neurorehabilitative interventions will be discussed.  相似文献
