OBJECTIVE: The spread of malignant neoplasms is closely associated with matrix and basement membrane degradation, mediated by various classes of proteolytic enzymes. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) appear to have a key role in the sequence of events that lead to local invasion and metastasis. The present study evaluated the role of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-2 (TIMP-2), and membrane-type metalloproteinase (MT1-MMP) in cervical neoplasia. METHODS: We have analyzed 49 uterine cervical squamous cell carcinomas, 10 cases of high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN II-III), and 10 control cervices for the presence of MMP-2, TIMP-2, and MT1-MMP using in situ hybridization. MMP-2 protein expression was evaluated using immunohistochemistry. Results were analyzed for possible correlation with disease outcome. RESULTS: MMP-2, TIMP-2, and MT1-MMP mRNA were localized to both stromal and tumor cells. However, an intense signal for MMP-2 was detected almost exclusively in tumor cells and was uniformly absent from CIN lesions and control cervices. Conversely, intense signals for TIMP-2 and MT1-MMP were detected in both stromal and tumor cells of invasive carcinomas, more often for the former. As with MMP-2, they were absent from CIN lesions. MMP-2 protein expression was enhanced in tumor cells compared to CIN cases and controls, significantly compared to the latter (P = 0.01). The presence of both MMP-2 and TIMP-2 mRNA in tumor cells correlated with advanced stage (P = 0.003 for MMP-2, P = 0.002 for TIMP-2) and with poor survival (P = 0.003 for MMP-2, P = 0.002 for TIMP-2) in univariate analysis. In addition, their presence in tumor cells intercorrelated (P = 0.002). In multivariate survival analysis, MMP-2 presence retained its association with survival (P = 0.004), in addition to patient age (P = 0.027) and advanced stage (P = 0. 0002). CONCLUSIONS: Both MMP-2 and TIMP-2 have a key role in extracellular matrix invasion in cervical carcinoma, largely through their elaboration by tumor cells. The presence of mRNA for both proteins is interrelated and is associated with poor survival.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their physiological inhibitors, the tissue inhibitors of MMPs (TIMPs), play a key role in tumor cell invasion, angiogenesis, and growth. The aim of this study was to determine the expression and cellular distribution of MMP-26, TIMP-3, and TIMP-4 in endometrial cancers and benign endometrium throughout the menstrual cycle and the correlation with tumor histological subtype, stage, and grade. METHODS: Immunohistochemical analysis using polyclonal antibodies generated against pro- and active MMP-26, and mono- and polyclonal antibodies specific to TIMP-3 and TIMP-4, respectively, was performed. RESULTS: MMP-26, TIMP-3, and TIMP-4 are expressed in endometrial carcinomas (N = 86) and benign endometrium (N = 50) from various stages of the menstrual cycle. Semi-quantitative analysis of staining intensity indicated that endometrial carcinomas expressed more MMP-26, TIMP-3, and TIMP-4 compared to benign endometrium from the postmenopausal period, but not from the secretory phase of the menstrual cycle. The highest staining intensity was associated with endometrial epithelial cells, followed by vascular endothelial cells, myometrial smooth muscle cells, and endometrial stromal cells. Increased staining intensity of MMP-26 and TIMP-3 correlated with grade III tumors and MMP-26 and TIMP-4 with the depth of myometrial invasion in tumors histologically characterized as endometrioid adenocarcinoma, clear-cell, and papillary serous carcinoma staged/graded based on FIGO criteria. CONCLUSION: MMP-26 and TIMP-4 are expressed in endometrium and endometrial carcinoma and their elevated expression and correlation with myometrial invasion suggests that MMP-26 and TIMP-4 may play a key role in endometrial tumor progression.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to assess the effect of epithelial and stromal tumor components on survival outcomes in FIGO stage III or IV ovarian carcinosarcomas (OCS) treated with primary surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy at the Northern Gynaecological Oncology Centre (NGOC), Gateshead. Women were identified from the histopathology/NGOC databases. Age, FIGO stage, details of histology, treatment, and overall survival were recorded. Of 34 cases (1994-2006, all FIGO stages), 17 were treated with primary surgery followed by adjuvant chemotherapy for FIGO stage III or IV. The median age was 66 years (52-85 years). Cytoreduction was optimal (n= 9) or complete (n= 1) in 10/17 (59%) cases. Epithelial predominant (EP) or stromal predominant (SP) tumor (defined as >50% of either component in the primary tumor) was noted in 12 and 5 cases, respectively. Epithelial types included serous (n= 9), endometrioid (n= 5), and mixed types (n= 3). Twelve women have died of disease. The median overall survival was 11.0 months (3-74 months). On univariate analysis, survival was not affected by optimal/suboptimal debulking, platinum/doxorubicin-containing chemotherapy, or homologous/heterologous stromal components. Stromal components (>25%) adversely affected survival (P= 0.02), and there was a trend to worse survival with serous compared with nonserous epithelial components (P= 0.07). Cox regression (multivariate analysis) showed that SP tumors (P= 0.04), suboptimal debulking (P= 0.01), age (P= 0.01), and tumors with serous epithelial component (P= 0.05) were adverse independent prognostic factors. Type of chemotherapy and homologous/heterologous components (P= 0.24) did not affect overall survival. In conclusion, our study suggests that SP-OCS have a worse survival outcome than EP tumors. Tumors with serous epithelial components adversely affected the survival compared with nonserous components. Larger studies are required to confirm these effects and to identify the optimum chemotherapy regimen for OCS.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the spatial expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their physiologic inhibitors, the tissue inhibitor of MMP (TIMP)-3 and TIMP-4, in ovarian carcinoma compared to normal ovaries. Immunohistochemistry was carried out in this study. Tissue sections prepared from normal ovarian tissues from throughout the menstrual cycle (N = 20) and ovarian carcinomas (N = 45) characterized as stage I (N = 5), stage III/IV (N = 40) were immunostained using polyclonal antibodies to the latent and the active form of MMP-26, TIMP-3, and a monoclonal antibody to TIMP-4. Immunoreactive MMP-26, TIMP-3, and TIMP-4 were detected in all the ovarian cell types in normal and tumor tissues. In normal ovarian tissues, theca externa and luteal cells immunostained with high intensity for MMP-26 and TIMPs while theca/granulosa cell staining intensity increased as lutenization progressed. There was low immunostaining of the ovarian stromal and surface epithelial cells for MMP-26, with moderate staining for TIMPs. In the carcinoma specimens, cancer cells and vascular endothelial cells displayed the highest staining intensity compared to adjacent nontumor areas. The immunostaining intensity of MMP-26 and TIMP-3 increased with stage of tumor with the invading tumor cells displaying the strongest immunostaining. MMP-26, TIMP-3, and TIMP-4 are expressed in normal ovarian as well as ovarian tumors with elevated expression in the invasive tumor cells suggesting a potential role for MMP-26 in normal ovary and ovarian cancer biologic function.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to test the prognostic value of the microvessel density (MVD) within the tumor and the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression on clinical response to chemotherapy, on brief disease-free interval, and on cause-specific survival in advanced ovarian serous carcinoma. We evaluated 83 ovarian carcinomas homogeneous for stage, type and grade histologic, surgical, and chemotherapeutic treatment. Brief disease-free interval and cause-specific survival rates (Kaplan-Meier method) were compared using the log-rank test. A multivariate analysis (Cox-proportional hazards model) was used to determine the independent effect of each variable on prognosis. Overall 60 and 120 months cause-specific survival rates were 27.7% and 2.4%, respectively. The brief disease-free interval rate was 66.2%. In univariate analysis, VEGF (P = 0.0001 and P = 0.016), MVD (P < 0.0005), and the FIGO stage IIIC even more than FIGO stage IIIA (P = 0.01 and P < 0.0005, respectively) were associated with survival and brief disease-free interval, and the residual tumor was associated with survival (P = 0.021). In multivariate analysis, the factors that were independent predictors of survival were MVD (P < 0.0005), VEGF (P = 0.027), and the FIGO stage IIIC even more than FIGO stage IIIA (P = 0.013). Moreover, MVD was an independent predictor also of brief disease relapse (P = 0.001). Both MVD and VEGF were correlated with clinical response to chemotherapy (P = 0.01 and P = 0.037). Our data suggest that MVD and VEGF may have prognostic significance in advanced ovarian serous carcinoma.  相似文献

Cytoplasmic CD24 expression in advanced ovarian serous borderline tumors   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9  
OBJECTIVES: CD24, originally described as a B-cell marker, has been revealed as one of the candidate molecular markers of epithelial ovarian cancer. We aimed to determine the pattern and extent of CD24 expression in ovarian serous tumors and to clarify its relationship with pathological parameters, especially those associated with the early events of tumor progression in serous tumors of borderline malignancy. METHODS: A total of 114 ovarian serous tumors, including 9 adenomas, 34 borderline, and 71 carcinomas, were analyzed immunohistochemically using a CD24 monoclonal antibody on paraffin blocks. RESULTS: In normal epithelium and serous cystadenomas, the CD24 expression was localized to the apical membranous portion. In some of borderline tumors (26.4%), additional cytoplasmic expression was observed. The cytoplasmic expression of CD24 in borderline tumors was associated with microinvasion (P = 0.001) and omental implants (P = 0.033) with statistical significance. Serous adenocarcinomas showed strong diffuse cytoplasmic expression of CD24, which was significantly associated with shortened survival rate both in univariate (P = 0.011) and multivariate (P = 0.009) analysis. CONCLUSION: The loss of apical localization with the acquisition of the cytoplasmic staining of CD24 protein is a surrogate marker of stromal invasion in ovarian serous tumors of borderline malignancy. Furthermore, the increase in the cytoplasmic expression of CD24 protein is a strong independent molecular marker for shortened survival rate of patients with ovarian serous adenocarcinomas.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to investigate CD56 staining in ovarian granulosa cell tumor and its morphological mimics in order to determine the value of CD56 staining in a diagnostic setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Tissue samples taken from 82 ovarian tumors, 26 extra-ovarian tumors and 11 normal ovaries were immunohistochemically stained using monoclonal anti-CD56 antibody. Ovarian tumors comprised 32 granulosa cell tumors, 3 Sertoli-stromal cell tumors, 14 fibrothecomas, 6 carcinoid tumors, 1 large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma, 17 endometrioid adenocarcinomas and 9 poorly differentiated serous adenocarcinomas. Extra-ovarian tumors comprised 22 uterine endometrial stromal sarcomas and 4 pulmonary small cell carcinomas. Normal ovaries contained 47 ovarian follicles. RESULTS: All of the 32 granulosa cell tumors, all of the 3 Sertoli-stromal cell tumors, all of the 4 small cell carcinomas, 1 of 1 large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma, 11 of 14 fibrothecomas, 5 of 6 carcinoid tumors, 17 of 22 endometrial stromal sarcomas and 7 of 9 poorly differentiated serous adenocarcinomas were positive for CD56. No immunoreactive cells were observed in 17 endometrioid adenocarcinomas or 47 ovarian follicles. All the immunoreactive cells showed membranous staining except for fibrothecomas where vague cytoplasmic staining was seen. CONCLUSION: CD56, known as a neuroendocrine marker, is a sensitive marker of granulosa cell tumors, but since granulosa cell tumors and neuroendocrine tumors may be morphologically similar, CD56 positivity represents a significant diagnostic pitfall. CD56 is useful in distinguishing between granulosa cell tumor and normal ovarian follicles or endometrioid adenocarcinoma. Lack of membranous CD56 expression in fibrothecoma may help differentiate it from granulosa cell tumor. However, CD56 is of limited use for distinguishing between granulosa cell tumor and poorly differentiated carcinoma or endometrial stromal sarcoma. Appropriate and cautious interpretation of CD56 expression should lead to a more accurate diagnosis of granulosa cell tumor.  相似文献

In a review of 440 patients treated for endometrial adenocarcinoma at this center since 1974, 21 patients with tumors of papillary histology were identified. Eleven (2.5%) lesions contained histologic changes characteristic of uterine papillary serous carcinoma: complex papillary architecture, high nuclear/cytoplasmic ratio, and irregular epithelial tufting. Ten lesions (2.3%) containing areas of papillary morphology but lacking the criteria for the diagnosis of papillary serous tumors were termed papillary endometrioid adenocarcinoma. Patient age, stage, and the presence of obesity, hypertension, and diabetes were similar in both groups and reflected those characteristics well established for endometrial adenocarcinoma in general. Fewer papillary serous tumors (16.7%) and papillary endometrioid tumors (33.3%) contained progesterone receptors than did other adenocarcinomas (52.3%). In clinical stage I, surgical findings indicating a more advanced stage were present in 40% of patients with papillary serous tumors compared to 10% in papillary endometrioid tumors and 12.5% in nonpapillary adenocarcinomas (P = 0.03, Fisher's exact test). Recurrences were observed in 50% of patients with papillary serous lesions compared to 42.9% in papillary endometrioid lesions and 24.3% in other adenocarcinomas. Survival for clinical stage I papillary serous tumors was worse than that for nonpapillary grade 3 controls (P = 0.042) and survival for papillary endometrioid lesions was not different from that of the same controls. These findings support those of J. L. Chen, D. C. Trost, and E. J. Wilkinson (Int. J. Gynecol. Pathol. 4, 279-288 (1985)) that papillary serous and papillary endometrioid adenocarcinomas represent two distinct subtypes of papillary endometrial neoplasia.  相似文献

One hundred eight cases of uterine papillary serous carcinoma (UPSC) were analyzed to characterize its histologic features and biologic behavior. Special situations that could conceivably modify the behavior and therapeutic approaches were considered: (1) the occurrence of areas of endometrioid carcinoma in otherwise typical UPSC; (2) the confinement of UPSC to an otherwise benign endometrial polyp or the endometrial mucosa or absence of residual tumor at the time of hysterectomy; and (3) the coexistence of a superficial UPSC and a serous ovarian carcinoma. There was coexistence of endometrioid and UPSC in 22 cases, and tumor was confined to an endometrial polyp or endometrium in 19 cases. There was simultaneous pathologic stage I UPSC and papillary serous ovarian carcinoma in 10 cases. In patients with pathologic stages I and II UPSC the presence of areas of endometrioid carcinoma intermixed with the UPSC did not improve survival. Patients with stage I disease and no residual tumor or tumor confined to an endometrial polyp/endometrial mucosa and without vascular invasion had a survival not statistically different from those with stage I disease but with myometrial and/or vascular invasion. Patients with stage I UPSC with concomitant ovarian serous surface papillary carcinoma had survival not statistically different from patients with stage IV UPSC.  相似文献

Epithelial ovarian tumors of borderline malignancy: a study of 50 cases   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Of 50 patients with borderline epithelial ovarian tumors, 32 (64%) had serous, 17 (34%) had mucinous and one (2%) had endometrioid tumor. All patients with mucinous tumor had stage I disease, whereas 4 patients with serous tumor had stage II–III disease. Five patients (10%) were pregnant at the time of diagnosis. Seventeen patients (34%) had initial surgery with ovarian conservation and 7 of them were not subjected to further surgery. Five patients (10%) received adjuvant chemotherapy. Five-year survival and 5-year disease-free survival rates were 100% and 96.4%, respectively. It is concluded that for patients with stage IA disease unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy seems to be adequate treatment and for those with more than stage IA disease, surgery should include total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. Although the effectiveness of chemotherapy in these tumors is uncertain, adjuvant chemotherapy is advocated for patients in whom spread of the tumor beyond the ovaries has occurred.  相似文献

Proapoptotic molecules have been studied in epithelial ovarian neoplasms as possible indicators of the pathogenetic pathways, as targets for new therapeutic approaches, and as prognostic markers. PTEN and p53 are proteins that have many different regulatory functions, including apoptosis. We have studied their immunohistochemical expression in 70 cases of primary ovarian carcinomas (26 serous, 27 endometrioid, and 17 mucinous) and compared the results with morphologic parameters (histologic grade, subtype) and clinical data (age, stage, tumor size). Statistical analyses showed a significantly higher expression of p53 in histologically high-grade tumors (grades 2 and 3), mainly of the serous subtype. A statistical tendency of higher expression of p53 in older patients ( P = 0.08) was also observed. The loss of expression of PTEN was significantly more frequent in grade 1 endometrioid adenocarcinomas. These markers did not show association with volume or stage of the tumor. p53 is associated with serous carcinoma, loss of differentiation, and older patients, whereas PTEN inactivation is an early event in carcinogenesis of the endometrioid subtype, as observed in type I endometrial carcinoma. Our results are in keeping with different pathogenetic pathways in subtypes of ovarian carcinoma, prompting the search for new strategies of prevention and treatment.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To investigate matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) proteolytic and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and receptor (VEGFR-1, VEGFR-2) angiogenetic capacity in serous borderline ovarian tumors (S-BOTs) for women with and without noninvasive implants. METHODS: The population was made up of 99 patients with S-BOTs as the primary diagnosis between 1985 and 1995, 44 of whom had noninvasive implants and 55 without implants. MMP-2, MMP-14, the type-2 tissue inhibitor of MMPs (TIMP-2), and VEGF and receptors (VEGFR-1, VEGFR-2) were examined by immunhistochemistry. RESULTS: Strong positive (+++) MMP-2 staining was found more frequently in women with primary S-BOTs and noninvasive implants (76%) than in those without implants (53%; p < 0.05). In contrast, staining for MMP-14 and TIMP-2 was not significantly different in the two groups. Furthermore, expression of MMP-2, MMP-14, and TIMP-2 was similar in primary tumors and in their noninvasive implants. Most tumors in both groups had no VEGF expression (84% in the noninvasive implant group and 82% in the group without implants), while moderate (++) to strong (+++) expression of VEGFR-1 and VEGFR-2 was detected in 79% and 94% of the two tumor groups, with no significant difference between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: Enhanced MMP-2 was seen in primary S-BOT with noninvasive implants. The presence of noninvasive implants was prognostic for disease-free survival.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: Major histocompatibility complex antigens are mandatory for the immune response, and a genetic imbalance may be linked to tumor escape. We have previously characterized a cluster of ovarian cancer patients with high incidence of HLA-A2. To find a prognostic relevance, the presence of HLA-A2 was correlated to defined clinical parameters. METHODS: A population-based set of 97 patients with confirmed epithelial ovarian cancer were recorded in a database by age, histology, stage, surgery and treatment. At the time the study was initiated, the majority of the patients were not alive and HLA-A2 expression was therefore determined by PCR/sequence-specific oligonucleotide hybridization using DNA extracted from paraffin-imbedded tissue specimens. RESULTS: 88 patients with a median age of 65 years (36-87) could be evaluated. 44% were serous adenocarcinomas, 28% endometrioid, 6% mucinous, 13% clear cell carcinomas, 7% undifferentiated and 2% other epithelial tumors. Stages I-II comprised 33% and stages III-IV 67%. In stages III-IV and serous histology, 73% were HLA-A2 positive. Cox analysis, in this group, showed high univariate (HR7.16; CI 2.04-25.03; P = 0.002) and multivariate (HR 6.8; CI 2.10-22.4; P = 0.001) Hazard Ratios. None of the HLA-A2 positive patients survived 5 years, compared to more than 50% of the HLA-A2 negative patients. CONCLUSIONS: HLA-A2 is a negative factor for survival in women with serous adenocarcinomas of the ovary in stages III-IV. This finding has implications for clinical patient management. Association with known oncogenes needs further analysis.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: In the present study, the significance of circulating matrix metalloproteinases -2 and -9 (MMP-2, MMP-9), as well as their tissue inhibitors -1 and -2 (TIMP-1, TIMP-2) in ovarian cancer were studied to assess the possibility of using them in clinical decision-making. METHODS: We measured, prior to primary surgery, the concentrations of these proteins in serum samples of 115 patients with an ovarian tumor: 63 with cancer, 6 with a low malignant potential tumor, and 46 with a benign tumor. The measurements were performed with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). The results were compared to clinicopathological data. RESULTS: A high serum concentration of TIMP-1 at diagnosis was found to correlate with the malignant phenotype of an ovarian tumor. Within malignant neoplasias, high circulating TIMP-1 correlated to the aggressive phenotype and unfavorable prognosis. An association was found between a high serum level of TIMP-1 and an advanced stage of the disease, a residual tumor>2 cm, poor response to cytotoxic treatment, shorter recurrence free time, and shorter cancer-related overall survival. No statistically significant correlation was found between the circulating gelatinases (MMP-2, MMP-9) or TIMP-2 and the clinicopathological factors. However, a tendency for better survival with high serum concentration of TIMP-2 or MMP-2 was observed. CONCLUSION: We conclude that an elevated preoperative serum TIMP-1 concentration correlates to the aggressive behavior of ovarian cancer.  相似文献

An immunohistochemical study was made of overexpression of the c-erbB-2 oncogene product in benign, borderline and malignant epithelial neoplasms of the ovary. Positive staining was found only in 2 of 15 mucinous tumors of borderline malignancy and in 11 of 16 mucinous adenocarcinomas. Positive staining was not detected in serous or endometrioid tumors. Amongst the group of mucinous adenocarcinomas, no correlation could be found between overexpression of c-erbB-2 oncoprotein and tumor stage, tumor differentiation or patient survival. OBJECTIVE: Human ovarian carcinoma samples were orthotopically implanted into SCID mice to investigate the contribution of matrix metalloproteases (MMPs) to the spread of ovarian tumors. METHODS: Mice were inoculated with patient tumor samples, and developed ovarian tumors over a 16-week period with metastasis occurring in some mice. Species-specific quantitative RT-PCR was used to identify the source of tumor-associated MMPs. RESULTS: Membrane-type (MT)1-MMP mRNA was significantly increased in high-grade tumors, tumors with evidence of serosal involvement, and tumors in which distant metastases were detected. The increase in MT1-MMP expression was predominantly from the human tumor cells, with a minor contribution from the mouse ovarian stroma. Neither human nor mouse MT2-MMP were correlated with tumor progression and MT3-MMP levels were negligible. While tumor cells did not produce significant amounts of MMP-2 or MMP-9, the presence of tumor was associated with increased levels of MMP-2 expression by mouse ovarian stroma. Stromal-derived MT1-MMP was greater in large tumors and was associated with stromal MMP-2 expression but neither was significantly linked with metastasis. CONCLUSIONS: These studies indicate that tumor-derived MT1-MMP, more so than other gelatinolytic MMPs, is strongly linked to aggressive tumor behavior. This orthotopic model of human ovarian carcinoma is appropriate for studying ovarian tumor progression, and will be valuable in the further investigation of the metastatic process.  相似文献

The study objective was to determine whether tumor vascularity correlates with patient survival, to compare newer semiautomated methods of angiogenesis assessment to older methods, and to determine if advanced image analysis methods can offer useful patient outcome data in serous ovarian cancer.Using the specific endothelial marker CD34, microvessel determinations were quantified in 132 serous ovarian tumors by manual counting at final magnifications of x 200 and x 400 in the most highly vascular areas. Computer-assisted image analysis microvessel counts, endothelial area estimates, and minimum spanning tree (MST) analysis of capillary architecture, which involves assessment of intercapillary distances, were correlated with traditional manual techniques.Manual, semiautomated, and advanced image analysis methods were found to be highly reproducible and express strong correlation with one another. Univariate cyclooxygenase analysis revealed angiogenesis parameters to be highly significant predictors for overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival. This study investigated the immunohistochemical expression and localization of neutral endopeptidase (NEP) (CD10), which plays a functional role by degrading bioactive peptides, in ovarian tumors. In normal ovaries and benign cystadenomas, NEP was not detected in any epithelial or stromal cells. In borderline tumors, NEP was detected in the stromal cells in 6 of 7 serous tumors, but not in those from mucinous tumors. In ovarian carcinomas, NEP in the stromal cells was observed in 13 of 20 serous, 8 of 10 endometrioid, and 7 of 10 clear-cell adenocarcinomas. NEP was weakly detected in only 1 of 9 mucinous adenocarcinomas. The staining intensity of stromal NEP was decreased in grades 2 and 3 serous carcinomas compared with that in grade 1 serous carcinomas. In conclusion, NEP was specifically expressed in the stroma of borderline and malignant ovarian tumors, but not in adenomas. Furthermore, stromal NEP was downregulated as the histological grade advanced. These results suggest that NEP may play a role in the regulation of neoplastic transformation and tumor differentiation in epithelial ovarian carcinomas.  相似文献
