Percutaneous renal biopsy using Biopty biopsy instrument and Biopty biopsy needle

We assessed the clinical usefulness of Biopty biopsy instrument & Biopty biopsy needle in percutaneous renal biopsy (PRB) compared with Tru-cut disposable needle and Vim-Silvermann needle. Sixty cases, each consisting 20 cases, were performed PRB by 3 different needles. There was no significant differences between Biopt y-cut needle and Tru-cut needle in the length of renal biopsy tissue and number of glomeruli obtained. The frequency of clinical complications such as fever, flank pain and decrease in Ht greater than 2% was lower in Biopty needle group after PRB. The frequency of middle and large size of hematoma was also lower in Biopty needle group after PRB. We could also obtain specimen from transplanted kidney without complications except small hematoma. From three results, Biopty biopsy needle is a useful tool in performing PRB.     

Technic and results of fine needle biopsy, cylinder biopsy and surgical biopsy

Mammography-screening contributes new diagnostic problems. In spite of sophisticated diagnostic procedures, surgical excision is the only way to diagnosis in microcalcifications. Triple-diagnosis may lead to the correct diagnosis of a carcinoma, but in most cases a tumor has to be excised if present. Specialists in senology tend to expensive and complicated diagnosis.     

Synovial biopsy

Summary. A comparative study of synovitis in Saudi Arabia and Malaysia was made with a view to determining any geographic variation in the incidence and pattern of the arthritides. The diagnostic spectrum in both series included pyogenic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, brucellar and tubercular arthritis, gout, pigmented villonodular synovitis, synovial chondromatosis and acute rheumatic fever. Date-palm thorn synovitis was observed only in the Saudi Arabian series. While brucellar and tuberculous arthritis were predominantly seen in Saudi Arabia, the incidence of rheumatoid arthritis, pigmented villonodular synovitis and acute suppurative arthritis was almost equal in both countries.

Résumé. Une étude comparative des arthrites a été réalisée en Arabie Saoudite et en Malaisie en vue d’établir une variation géographique, tant pour l’incidence que pour l’origine. Les étiologies communes aux deux séries sont l’arthrite septique, l’arthrite rhumato?de, la brucellose, la tuberculose, la goutte, la synovite pigmentée villo-nodulaire, la chondroma-tose synoviale et le rhumastime articulaire aigu. L’arthrite par inoculation par épine de palmier n’a été observée qu’en Arabie Saoudite. Alors que la brucellose ou la tuberculose ont été observées de fa?on prédominante en Arabie Saoudite, l’incidence de l’arthrite rhumato?de, de la synovite pigmentée villo-nodulaire et de l’arthrite septique aigu?était à peu près égale. Dans les deux séries, parmi les articulations le genou était la plus concernée et le coude la moins concernée.

The advantages of frameless stereotactic biopsy over frame-based biopsy

A comparison study is presented, which examines the outcome, complications and cost of stereotactic brain biopsy performed with a frameless versus a frame-based method. The technique of frameless stereotactic biopsy has been shown previously, in both laboratory and in vivo studies, to achieve a level of accuracy at least equal to frame-based biopsy. The investigators have validated the technique in a large clinical series. The frameless and frame-based series were concurrent, comprising 76 and 79 cases, respectively. The frameless stereotactic technique involved standard needle biopsy, targeted by an image-guidance system and directed by a novel rigid adjustable instrument-holder. Frame-based biopsies were performed with the CRW and Leksell systems. There were no significant differences in the demographics, lesion site, size and pathologies between the groups. Operating theatre occupancy and anaesthetic time were both significantly shorter for the frameless series than the frame-based series (p < 0.0001). In addition, the complication rate in the frameless biopsy series was significantly lower than in the frame-based series (p = 0.018). This resulted in lower ITU bed occupancy (p = 0.02), shorter mean hospital stay (p = 0.0013) and significant cost savings (p = 0.0022) for the frameless stereotactic biopsy group, despite the greater use of more expensive MRI in these cases. This comparison study demonstrates that the superior imaging, target visualization and flexibility of the technique of frameless stereotactic biopsy translates into tangible advantages for safety, time and cost when compared with the current gold-standard of frame-based biopsy. The principles are discussed and the authors propose a definition for the term 'frameless stereotaxy'.
