EEG asymmetry as a function of occupation, task, and task difficulty.

Nine male artists and eight male engineers were tested for asymmetry of occipital alpha as a function of occupation, lateral speicificity of task, and difficulty of the task. NEbes' ring test and a facial memory test were used as “right hemisphere” tasks, and linguistic and mathematical tasks were chosen as left hemisphere specific. Results found no difference on the basis of occupation or difficulty, and significant results were found for task laterality.     

Lack of association between Alzheimer's disease and education, occupation, marital status, or living arrangement.

Using the resources of the Rochester Epidemiology Project, we conducted a case-control study of sociodemographic characteristics using the incidence cohort of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). During the conduct of ongoing studies of AD in Rochester, we identified new cases of AD as they occurred during 1975-1979 (N = 241). We selected one age- and sex-matched control from among all registrations for care in this community during the year of onset for each case. There was little difference between cases and controls for educational attainment, marital status, type of dwelling, living arrangement, or occupation. We were unable to confirm low educational level as a risk factor for AD in this population. Future attempts to identify etiologic risk factors for dementing illness should probably move toward other areas of research.     

Facial numbness and dysesthesia. New features of carotid artery dissection

Facial numbness and dysesthesia have not been emphasized as presenting features in spontaneous internal carotid artery dissection. Progressive facial pain, accompanied by oculosympathetic paresis, altered taste, and facial numbness suggest the possibility of basal skull neoplasm. We describe a patient, with previously undiscovered fibromuscular dysplasia, who presented with severe neck and face pain, dysgeusia, oculosympathetic paresis, and markedly reduced facial sensation due to a spontaneous vascular dissection. Altered facial sensation should now be included in the symptomatology of internal carotid artery dissection.     

Affective syndromes, psychotic features, and prognosis. I. Depression

Prognosis is an important issue among patients who have psychotic features and a depressive syndrome; some have outcomes that suggest diagnostic revisions to schizophrenia, and this has far-reaching implications for treatment. To explore this issue, we used biannual evaluations to follow up 103 such individuals for 5 years. Patients with Research Diagnostic Criteria schizoaffective disorder experienced substantially more morbidity of various sorts than did patients with Research Diagnostic Criteria psychotic major depression. Within the group with schizoaffective disorder, patients with the chronic subtype experienced more morbidity than did those with nonchronic schizoaffective disorder; the mainly affective--mainly schizophrenic distinction had less prognostic significance. Factors that predicted sustained delusions at the end of follow-up were exclusively historical and suggested a poor-outcome prototype patient who is single, was socially impaired as an adolescent, and has a history of schizophrenialike psychotic features temporarily dissociated from affective symptoms.
