Natural oils are advocated and used throughout the world as part of neonatal skin care, but there is an absence of evidence to support this practice. The goal of the current study was to ascertain the effect of olive oil and sunflower seed oil on the biophysical properties of the skin. Nineteen adult volunteers with and without a history of atopic dermatitis were recruited into two randomized forearm‐controlled mechanistic studies. The first cohort applied six drops of olive oil to one forearm twice daily for 5 weeks. The second cohort applied six drops of olive oil to one forearm and six drops of sunflower seed oil to the other twice daily for 4 weeks. The effect of the treatments was evaluated by determining stratum corneum integrity and cohesion, intercorneocyte cohesion, moisturization, skin‐surface pH, and erythema. Topical application of olive oil for 4 weeks caused a significant reduction in stratum corneum integrity and induced mild erythema in volunteers with and without a history of atopic dermatitis. Sunflower seed oil preserved stratum corneum integrity, did not cause erythema, and improved hydration in the same volunteers. In contrast to sunflower seed oil, topical treatment with olive oil significantly damages the skin barrier, and therefore has the potential to promote the development of, and exacerbate existing, atopic dermatitis. The use of olive oil for the treatment of dry skin and infant massage should therefore be discouraged. These findings challenge the unfounded belief that all natural oils are beneficial for the skin and highlight the need for further research.  相似文献

Elevated rates of transepidermal water loss (TEWL) in plaques of human psoriasis and in the skin of essential fatty acid (EFA)-deficient rats were compared. Cutaneous application of sunflower seed oil to EFA-deficient rats lowered the rate of TEWL to normal, healed the characteristic scaly skin of this condition and increased the incorporation of linoleic acid of the sunflower seed oil into epidermal phospholipid. Application of sunflower seed oil to psoriatic skin did not lower the TEWL, nor produce clinical improvement, but the linoleic acid of epidermal phospholipid was increased. Local application of a steroid ointment, clobetasol propionate (Dermovate) reduced the elevated TEWL in psoriasis and produced clinical improvement, but had no effect upon skin or plasma lipids. Application of this steroid to EFA-deficient rat skin cleared the skin scaliness but did not restore barrier function or change the composition of the skin lipids. It is concluded that the impaired barrier function in psoriasis is not due to EFA-deficiency.  相似文献

本实验采用大豆、芝麻、葵花籽3种固体脂类培养基,培养80例花斑癣患者皮损鳞屑,并与相应的豆油,芝麻油及葵花籽油培养基进行了对照。结果表明:固体脂类培养基培养的阳性率、菌丝出现率、菌落生长速度均优于相应的油类培养基。根据本地区特点,大豆、芝麻及葵花籽来源丰富,以此制备的固体脂类培养基表面无易浮动的油类,便于存放及延长保存时间,且培养效果良好。故可考虑代替油类培养基推广应用。  相似文献

Epidermal barrier function in rats was experimentally impaired by two separate means, namely, by rendering the animals deficient in essential fatty acids and by evoking a primary cutaneous irritant response by treating with a solution of sodium laurate. Impaired barrier function was manifested by a greatly increased rate of transepidermal water loss. Application to the skin of sunflower seed oil, which is rich in linoleic acid, rapidly restored to normal the abnormally high rates of transepidermal water loss in both experimental cases, and it was shown with the essential fatty acid-deficient rats that there was a concomitant incorporation of linoleic acid of the sunflower seed oil into epidermal lipids. Cutaneous application of olive oil, which is low in linoleic acid but rich in the non-essential oleic acid, did not influence epidermal barrier function. A close relationship of barrier function and essential fatty acids is indicated.  相似文献

Effect of topically applied lipids on surfactant-irritated skin   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Summary Moisturizers are used daily by many people to alleviate symptoms of dry skin. All of them contain lipids. It has been suggested that topically applied lipids may interfere with the structure and function of the permeability barrier. The influence of a single application of nine different lipids on normal skin and skin irritated by sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) was studied in 21 healthy subjects. Parameters assessed were visible signs of irritation, and objectively measured cutaneous blood flow and transepidermal water loss (TEWL). The substances tested were hydrocortisone, petrolatum, fish oil, borage oil, sunflower seed oil, canola oil, shea butter, and fractions of unsaponifiable lipids from canola oil and shea butter. Water was included as a control.
On normal skin, no significant differences in the effects of the test substances were found, whereas significant differences were observed when they were applied to SLS-irritated skin. The visible signs of SLS-induced irritation were significantly less pronounced after treatment with the sterol-enriched fraction from canola oil than after treatment with water. This fraction, and hydrocortisone, reduced cutaneous blood flow. Furthermore, application of hydrocortisone, canola oil, and its sterol-enriched fraction, resulted in significantly lower TEWL than with water. The other lipids had no effect on the degree of irritation.
In conclusion, lipids commonly used in moisturizers may reduce skin reactions to irritants. Previous studies have shown that, in barrier perturbed skin, the synthesis of sterols is increased. The observed effects of canola oil and its fraction of unsaponifiable lipids on SLS-induced irritation suggest the possibility that they assisted the skin in supplying the damaged barrier with adequate lipids.  相似文献

Abstract: For millennia, sunflower seed oil has been used in folk medicine for both skin care and the treatment of skin disorders. In its natural state, the oil contains high levels of essential fatty acids, particularly linoleic acid, which has skin barrier‐enhancing properties. A sunflower oleodistillate (SOD), which is produced through a molecular distillation process without the use of solvents, has been shown to increase the epidermal key lipid synthesis and to reduce inflammation in vitro and in animal models. It has also been shown to activate peroxisome proliferative‐activated receptor‐α (PPAR‐α) in vitro. As PPAR‐α agonists have been shown to stimulate keratinocyte differentiation, improve barrier function, and enhance lipid metabolism in the skin, it has been suggested that SOD might also be efficacious in atopic dermatitis (AD). An initial clinical evaluation of the care effect of a 2% SOD emulsion in 20 adult volunteers with atopic skin revealed the moisturizing properties of SOD. Finally, a strong steroid‐sparing effect and a positive effect on quality‐of‐life parameters were clearly demonstrated for the 2% SOD cream in studies in infants and babies with AD.  相似文献

Background/aims: It is of great interest to describe the many functions and properties of the skin in order to better understand reactions that result in different skin abnormalities, as a prerequisite in the development of skin products and topical medicines. Skin surface pH is considered a critical parameter of skin wellbeing and is typically studied on the forearm skin. Despite many previous investigations, this is an extensive field that still needs a great deal of research. The aim of our study was to investigate gender related differences, differences between right and left arms, anatomical variation and daytime variation in skin surface pH.
Methods: Skin surface pH was measured on the flexor surface of the forearm on eleven healthy volunteers (6 men and 5 women). A Mettler Toledo pH meter (pH meter 1140) was used. The subjects were measured once every hour from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in five areas from the elbow to the wrist. In each of the five areas, three measurements were performed next to each other, and the mean of these was used in subsequent calculations.
Results: A statistically significant difference in skin pH between men (mean pH=5.80) and women (mean pH=5.54) was found, with women being more acidic than men ( P <0.01). No difference between right and left arm was found. In men, the area closest to the wrist had significantly lower pH values compared with the proximal sites. This was not the case in women. Skin surface pH decreased during normal working hours in both genders.
Conclusion: Spontaneous skin surface pH was found to be significantly lower in women, as compared to men – albeit, the difference was small and of unknown relevance. Nevertheless, comparative studies on skin surface pH should be balanced with respect to gender. There appeared to be no right/left difference and no systematic change during the working day. Also, measurements should not be conducted close to the wrist.  相似文献

Despite the availability of effective medications for the management of atopic dermatitis and xerosis, patients may use nonconventional therapies such as topical oils. Patients choose these treatments because of the perceived lower risk of natural products and the fear of potential adverse effects of topical steroids. We review the use of topical olive, coconut, and sunflower seed oil in the treatment of atopic dermatitis and xerosis with a focus on children Currently available evidence suggests that olive oil may exacerbate xerosis and atopic dermatitis. Further studies are needed to make definitive recommendations regarding the use of coconut and sunflower seed oil.  相似文献

Summary The skin surface pH on the forehead and cheek of 574 men and women aged 18–95 was measured. No differences were found between men and women regarding forehead and cheek pH distribution. The group over the age of 80 showed higher pH values on both the forehead and the cheek. In 89% of the subjects measured, the skin surface pH on the cheek was higher than that on the forehead. Background. Seborrheic dernnatitis (SD) is a frequent complication of infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Most studies examining the cause of SD have concentrated on the roles of Pityrosporum ovale and sebaceous lipids. Previous studies of skin surface lipid from patients with SD have produced conflicting results, with some authors reporting an abnormal lipid composition and others finding little or no abnormality. Methods. The composition of skin surface lipid was studied in 15 HIV-positive and 10 HIV-negative men with SD, in 14 HIV-positive men without SD, and in 16 unaffected controls. Total lipids were extracted from unaffected forehead skin into petroleum ether and separated into lipid classes by thin layer chromatography. The lipid classes were quantitated by densitometry after charring with sulfuric acid. Results. Patients, HIV-positive with SD, had significantly lower proportions of free fatty acid (FFA) and higher levels of triglyceride than normal controls. Patients, HIV-positive without SD, had a significantly increased proportion of FFA compared to HIV-positive patients with SD. Patients with SD, both HIV-positive and HIV-negative, had a similar pattern of skin surface lipid. Levels of FFA were lower and those of triglyceride higher than in the patients unaffected by SD, whether HIV-positive or not. There was no significant difference found between groups in free cholesterol, wax esters, and squalene. Conclusions. Abnormalities of skin surface lipid composition may play a part in the development of SD in both HIV-positive and HIV-negative men.  相似文献

Background Although the nipple and areola of the breast constitute a unique and prominent area on the chest, so far no study has been done on the functional properties of their skin surfaces. Objective To study the stratum corneum (SC) covering the areola using noninvasive methods. Methods Eighteen adult healthy subjects comprising nine men and nine women and 18 age‐ and sex‐matched patients with atopic dermatitis (AD), none of whom had visible skin lesions, participated in the study. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL), skin surface hydration and skin surface lipid levels were measured on the areola and adjacent breast skin. The size of the skin surface corneocytes of these skin regions was assessed. Results All the healthy subjects showed significantly higher TEWL accompanied by smaller sized corneocytes on the areola than on the adjacent breast skin. Only female subjects revealed a significantly higher skin surface hydration state together with significantly increased skin surface lipid levels on the areola than on the adjacent breast skin. These sex differences were observed even in patients with AD. Comparison between healthy individuals and the patients with AD demonstrated higher TEWL, decreased skin surface hydration state and lower skin surface lipid levels associated with smaller sized corneocytes in the areola in the patients with AD, especially in male patients. Conclusions In adults, the SC barrier function and SC water‐binding capacity of the areola were functionally poorer than in the adjacent skin, being covered by smaller sized corneocytes and lower amounts of skin surface lipids, especially in men and in patients with AD.  相似文献

The purpose of this population-based study was to assess trends in mortality rates for nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) in the United States. Particular emphasis was placed on the subgroup of malignancies arising on genital skin. Nearly 75,000 deaths in the United States were attributed to NMSC from 1969 to 2000. The age-adjusted US mortality rate for NMSC arising on nongenital skin from 1969 to 2000 was 0.69/10(5)/year; the rate among men was twice that among women. Mortality rates among white men exceeded that of black men by a factor of two; the same was observed among women, but by a smaller multiple. Corresponding mortality rates for malignancies arising from genital skin (penis, scrotum, vulva) were higher in women (0.54) than in men (0.30). In contrast to nongenital NMSC, mortality rates among black men were twice that of white men; however, rates for white and black women were similar. These results suggest that greater emphasis could be placed on reducing mortality from genital NMSC while continuing to stress reduction of excess sun exposure.  相似文献

目的:研究复方沙棘籽油栓对6种常见阴道乳杆菌增殖的影响。方法:从中国健康妇女阴道分离乳杆菌进行纯化、鉴定后在体外培养,在培养基中加入不同浓度的复方沙棘籽油栓,观察该药对各菌种增殖的影响。结果:浓度≥405mg,/mL时,所有细菌无法生长;浓度在129mg/mL-405mg/mL时,对细菌产生抑制作用(P〈0.05);当浓度在16.2mg/mL-64.8mg/mL时,对卷曲乳杆菌和加氏乳杆菌产生促进作用(P〈0.05),而对其它细菌无明显作用(P〉0.05)。结论:复方沙棘籽油栓对阴道乳杆菌各菌种的影响存在不同.且其影响与药物浓度有关。当药物浓度合适时.能对卷曲乳杆菌和加氏乳杆菌产生一定的促进作用。  相似文献

Smoking and ultraviolet radiation are known to have a detrimental effect on human skin. Important characteristics of the aging skin are elastosis and telangiectasia. The purpose of the study was to assess the relative importance of age per se, and the detrimental effects caused by sun exposure and smoking on the development of cutaneous elastosis and telangiectasia in a well-defined group of individuals. We made use of 966 individuals who participated in a case-control study to investigate environmental and genetic risk factors for skin cancer. Exposure measurements for sunlight and smoking were collected and the amount of elastosis and telangiectasia in the face and neck was recorded according to a four-graded score varying from none to severe. Relative risks were estimated using exposure odds ratios from cross-tabulation and logistic regression. Multivariate logistic regression was used to adjust for potential confounders. Among both sexes a strong association was observed between increasing age, sun exposure, and amount of elastosis. The association between increasing age, sun exposure, and amount of telangiectasia was strong among men, but less apparent among women. Smoking was also associated with elastosis among both sexes, and with telangiectasia predominantly among men. Intrinsic differences between men and women (e.g., hormones) or behavior differences (e.g., more frequent use of creams and cosmetics among women) could account for this apparent difference in the occurrence of telangiectasia. In contrast to elastosis, telangiectasia may not be a good marker of the aging skin, specifically not in women.  相似文献

The aims of this study were (a) to examine the association of skin tags and colonic polyps and (b) to identify factors influencing skin tags. Therefore, a consecutive series of 157 medical ward patients with gastrointestinal symptoms who underwent colonoscopy underwent dermatological examination. Skin tags were found in 52% of these patients regardless of sex. (a) There was a statistically significant association between skin tags and colonic polyps (P = 0.33). This association, however, was based solely on an age effect. (b) Influencing factors were weight and age for the number of skin tags and the interaction between sex and the concentration of triglycerides for their size. At any given triglyceride concentration, men had larger skin tags.  相似文献

The effects of bath-oil and tap-water baths were studied by non-invasive bioengineering methods. Measurements of water evaporation, electrical conductance and capacitance demonstrated an increase in cutaneous hydration for 20 min after both types of bath, with the larger increase occurring within the first 10 min. A small but significantly greater amount of water (12-27%) was bound in the skin following use of bath oil. However, measurements of evaporation, conductance and capacitance indicated no clear difference in the skin surface hydration following bath-oil and tap-water baths. Thus, the increase in the water-holding capacity of the skin resulting from bath oil is slight and of no real importance for skin-surface hydration immediately after bathing. There was no difference between 5-min and 20-min baths. Oil baths resulted in an increase in skin-surface lipids lasting at least 3 h, comparable to the effect of traditional moisturizing lotions. This lipidization of the skin surface may have protracted effects. In conclusion, the value of bath oil lies mainly in the general lipidization of the skin with potential improvement in dryness and scaling, i.e. effects which are complex and protracted. The direct hydration of the skin is of short duration and comparable to a tap-water bath. In comparison with lotions, use of an oil bath has the disadvantage that it is not practical for repeated daily treatment over the long period which is necessary for therapy to be effective. The present study on normal skin does not take into account other effects of bathing with or without the addition of oil.  相似文献

A study of melanocytic naevi was carried out in southern Spain to examine the relationship between numbers of naevi at different body sites as predictors of whole-body naevus count and to determine whether the naevus count on the arms is valid for identifying the risk factors for total naevi. Subjects were the control group from a case-control study on risk factors for cutaneous melanoma. They were selected from visitors to the University of Granada Hospital (southern Spain) between 1989 and 1993. Of 200 people invited to participate, 146 accepted (73%). Data were collected by personal interview, and melanocytic naevi were counted over the entire body surface by clinical skin examination performed by one dermatologist. Partial correlation coefficients (R) estimated by multiple linear regression were calculated. Comparisons between whole-body naevi and naevi on the arms, and their relationship with risk factors, were assessed by analysis of variance and covariance. Arms in men (adjusted R = 0.88) and thighs in women (adjusted R = 0.82) were the best predictors of total naevi after adjusting for age and sun exposure. Age, occupational and leisure sun exposure, and sunburns showed significant correlations with the total number of naevi. Similar results were found for the naevus count on the arms. In conclusion, the prediction of whole-body numbers of naevi by a naevus count on specific sites differs between men and women: arms in men and thighs in women are the best predictors. Nevertheless, naevus counts on the arms allowed us to study the risk factors for total naevi as well as whole-body naevus count: age and occupational sun exposure were the strongest determinants.  相似文献

Most guidelines on neonatal skin care emphasize issues pertaining to healthy, term infants. Few address the complex task of skin barrier maintenance in preterm, very preterm, and extremely preterm infants. Here, we provide an evidence‐based review of the literature on skin care of preterm neonates. Interestingly, the stratum corneum does not fully develop until late in the third trimester, and as such, the barrier function of preterm skin is significantly compromised. Numerous interventions are available to augment the weak skin barrier of neonates. Plastic wraps reduce the incidence of hypothermia while semipermeable and transparent adhesive dressings improve skin quality and decrease the incidence of electrolyte abnormalities. Tub bathing causes less body temperature variability than sponge bathing and can be performed as infrequently as once every four days without increasing bacterial colonization of the skin. Topical emollients, particularly sunflower seed oil, appear to reduce the incidence of skin infections in premature neonates—but only in developing countries. In developed countries, studies indicate that topical petrolatum ointment increases the risk of candidemia and coagulase‐negative Staphylococcus infection in the preterm population, perhaps by creating a milieu similar to occlusive dressings. For preterm infants with catheters, povidone‐iodine and chlorhexidine are comparably effective at preventing catheter colonization. Further studies are necessary to examine the safety and efficacy of various skin care interventions in premature infants with an emphasis placed on subclassifying the patient population. In the interim, it may be beneficial to develop guidelines based on the current body of evidence.  相似文献

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to investigate the optimum combination of polyols and oils in moisturizing cosmetic products to improve the human skin moisturization and skin surface roughness. Polyols and oils are essential ingredients in skin care products, but it is still not understood how their concentrations affect their efficacy and sensory properties on human skin. We investigated the effect of polyol and oil concentration on skin properties by noninvasive methods. METHODS: The polyols consisted of glycerin and butylenes glycol in a ratio of 1:1 and the oils consisted of equal parts of hydrogenated polydecene, cethyl ethylhexanoate and pentaerythrityl tetraethylhexanoate. All cosmetic products were made in O/W emulsions in concentrations ranging from 0% to 30% for polyols and from 0% to 35% for oils. We investigated the effect on water content and skin surface roughness on the forearm after application of the cosmetic products. The skin water contents were measured by a Corneometer CM825 and the skin surface roughness by visual coring of skin surface biopsies in the scanning electron micrographs. RESULTS: In the first study, we found that the water content of the skin correlated highly with the polyol (up to 30%) and oil (up to 12%) concentrations, respectively. At two hours after application, the correlation coefficients were 0.971 and 0.985, respectively (P<0.01). Skin surface roughness not only showed a strong concentration dependence on polyols and oils (up to 6%). In the second study, we investigated the optimum combination of polyols and oils to improve the skin moisturization and skin surface roughness by the Response surface methodology. The water content of the skin surface was high in the ratio of polyol to oil (30:12 and 25:30). The skin surface roughness was improved considerably in the ratio of polyols to oil (30:6 and 30:35). CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicated that the skin surface properties were improved in the different ratios of their concentrations because they are influenced by not one ingredient but the interaction between polyols and oils. In this study, we could recommend the optimum concentration of polyols and oils to improve the skin surface properties. Further studies will be performed with other ingredients such as surfactants, lipids and so on.  相似文献

Background Skin color distribution and skin surface topography are the predominant drivers of the variation in visible skin condition, and this variation affects one’s perception of age and health. Recent research, however, has shown that the strength of the impact of these features on perception differs such that skin surface topography is a stronger indicator of age, while skin color distribution is more strongly linked to health perception. Objectives To examine further the relative contribution and interaction effects of skin color distribution and surface topography cues on perception by considering small changes of these features. Methods Two sets of images were created by gradually smoothing uneven skin color distribution and removing skin surface topography cues (both in 25% increments) in the digital image of the face of a 61‐year‐old British woman. Omnibus pairwise combinations of modified images were presented to a panel of 160 German men and women (aged 19–49 years). With each pair, they were asked to select the face they considered both younger‐looking and healthier. Results Female facial age perception was more strongly affected by the removal of skin surface topography cues than by changes in skin color distribution, particularly so for topography removal of 50% and more. In contrast, the smoothing of uneven skin color distribution had a stronger effect on the perception of female facial health, particularly for changes of 25% and greater. Conclusions These results support previous reports on the differential effects of visible skin color distribution and surface topography cues on the perception of female facial age and health and show that only relatively small changes are necessary to drive this differential perception.  相似文献
