Although it is known that visual imagery is accompanied by activity in visual cortical areas, including primary visual cortex, whether olfactory imagery exists remains controversial. Here we asked whether cue-dependent olfactory imagery was similarly accompanied by activity in olfactory cortex, and in particular whether hedonic-specific patterns of activity evident in olfactory perception would also be present during olfactory imagery. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to measure activity in subjects who alternated between smelling and imagining pleasant and unpleasant odors. Activity induced by imagining odors mimicked that induced by perceiving real odorants, not only in the particular brain regions activated, but also in its hedonic-specific pattern. For both real and imagined odors, unpleasant stimuli induced greater activity than pleasant stimuli in the left frontal portion of piriform cortex and left insula. These findings combine with findings from other modalities to suggest activation of primary sensory cortical structures during mental imagery of sensory events.  相似文献

Olfactory representations by Drosophila mushroom body neurons   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Learning and memory has been studied extensively in Drosophila using behavioral, molecular, and genetic approaches. These studies have identified the mushroom body as essential for the formation and retrieval of olfactory memories. We investigated odor responses of the principal neurons of the mushroom body, the Kenyon cells (KCs), in Drosophila using whole cell recordings in vivo. KC responses to odors were highly selective and, thus sparse, compared with those of their direct inputs, the antennal lobe projection neurons (PNs). We examined the mechanisms that might underlie this transformation and identified at least three contributing factors: excitatory synaptic potentials (from PNs) decay rapidly, curtailing temporal integration, PN convergence onto individual KCs is low ( approximately 10 PNs per KC on average), and KC firing thresholds are high. Sparse activity is thought to be useful in structures involved in memory in part because sparseness tends to reduce representation overlaps. By comparing activity patterns evoked by the same odors across olfactory receptor neurons and across KCs, we show that representations of different odors do indeed become less correlated as they progress through the olfactory system.  相似文献

Hedonic tone is so salient in odor perception that several authors have used odors to induce affective states. Various studies have shown that the electrophysiological and psychophysiological response patterns induced by olfactory stimuli are different for pleasant and unpleasant odors, and that these types of odor activate brain structures differentially. These results suggest that odors are first categorized according to pleasantness. The objective of the present work was to study the possible existence of an involuntary affective categorization in olfaction. Given that certain variations in the autonomic system, such as skin conductance amplitude and heart rate, are not under the voluntary control of human subjects, we used such psychophysiological methods for this investigation. Our results indicate that unpleasant odors provoke heart-rate acceleration during both a smelling task (control condition: a task in which subjects had only to inhale odors) and a pleasantness judgment, but not during a familiarity judgment. These results suggest that subjects involuntarily categorize odors by their pleasantness.  相似文献

Food-related and nonfood-related olfactory stimuli were presented to human subjects before and after they ate a meal. The subjects were asked to judge the pleasantness or the unpleasantness of the stimuli using a category scale. The responses of ten control subjects, who remained fasted, did not change during a 120 min period. With the other subjects on ad lib meals there followed these two characteristic phenomena: (1) there was a significant drop in the pleasantness of the food-related odors (negative alliesthesia); and, (2) there was no change in the pleasantness of the non-food-related odors (no alliesthesia). Therefore negative alliesthesia is specific to food-related odors. Negative alliesthesia reached a maximum within 60 min after the meals, then decreased and disappeared within the next 60 min. In three other subjects, with abnormal body weight, negative alliesthesia did not occur after the meal. These results favor the view that olfactory alliesthesia plays a role in satiety and the control of intermeal interval. They are also compatible with the existence of a ponderostat.  相似文献

Functional mapping of human brain in olfactory processing: a PET study   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8  
This study describes the functional anatomy of olfactory and visual naming and matching in humans, using positron emission tomography (PET). One baseline control task without olfactory or visual stimulation, one control task with simple olfactory and visual stimulation without cognition, one set of olfactory and visual naming tasks, and one set of olfactory and visual matching tasks were administered to eight normal volunteers. In the olfactory naming task (ON), odors from familiar items, associated with some verbal label, were to be named. Hence, it required long-term olfactory memory retrieval for stimulus recognition. The olfactory matching task (OM) involved differentiating a recently encoded unfamiliar odor from a sequentially presented group of unfamiliar odors. This required short-term olfactory memory retrieval for stimulus differentiation. The simple olfactory and visual stimulation resulted in activation of the left orbitofrontal region, the right piriform cortex, and the bilateral occipital cortex. During olfactory naming, activation was detected in the left cuneus, the right anterior cingulate gyrus, the left insula, and the cerebellum bilaterally. It appears that the effort to identify the origin of an odor involved semantic analysis and some degree of mental imagery. During olfactory matching, activation was observed in the left cuneus and the cerebellum bilaterally. This identified the brain areas activated during differentiation of one unlabeled odor from the others. In cross-task analysis, the region found to be specific for olfactory naming was the left cuneus. Our results show definite recruitment of the visual cortex in ON and OM tasks, most likely related to imagery component of these tasks. The cerebellar role in cognitive tasks has been recognized, but this is the first PET study that suggests that the human cerebellum may have a role in cognitive olfactory processing as well.  相似文献

There are many reports of olfactory impairment in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and the impairment can be observed before the appearance of typical PD symptom. Accordingly, olfactory screening tests may predict disease onset and indicates a need for early treatment before classic signs of the disease. Olfaction is dependent on inspiration, and activation of olfactory limbic areas are synchronized with the natural breathing cycle in animals and humans. Subconscious changes in respiratory pattern occur in response to odor stimulation. The use of olfactory stimuli to investigate respiratory pattern could be used to assess olfactory perception and serve as an index for olfactory limbic activation. In this study, we tested olfactory acuity in normal subjects and in patients with PD and recorded V(O2) and respiratory variables during pleasant and unpleasant odor presentation. All subjects were able to detect the odorants; however patients with PD were assigned to one of two groups, group that could recognize odors or the group with impaired odor recognition. Respiratory response toward unpleasant and pleasant odor recognition were weak in PD groups who could recognize odors than normal subject as well as emotional response to odor stimuli. PD group with impaired odor recognition showed no respiratory response toward odor stimuli. PD may experience difficulty in feeling positive emotions toward pleasant odors prior to the unpleasant odor because respiratory responses to pleasant odors may also be related to higher processes including intentional control of breathing pattern as a result of olfactory cortex processing and perceptions or emotions.  相似文献

We report a cross-sectional study of olfactory impairment with age based on both odorant-stimulated responses of human olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) and tests of olfactory threshold sensitivity. A total of 621 OSNs from 440 subjects in 2 age groups of younger (≤ 45 years) and older (≥ 60 years) subjects were investigated using fluorescence intensity ratio fura-2 imaging. OSNs were tested for responses to 2 odorant mixtures, as well as to subsets of and individual odors in those mixtures. Whereas cells from younger donors were highly selective in the odorants to which they responded, cells from older donors were more likely to respond to multiple odor stimuli, despite a loss in these subjects' absolute olfactory sensitivity, suggesting a loss of specificity. This degradation in peripheral cellular specificity may impact odor discrimination and olfactory adaptation in the elderly. It is also possible that chronic adaptation as a result of reduced specificity contributes to observed declines in absolute sensitivity.  相似文献

A method was devised for evaluating odor quality. Subjects were requested to freely describe the images elicited by smelling odors. This test was named the "Free Image-Association Test (FIT)". The test was applied for 20 flavors of various foods, five odors from the standards of T&T olfactometer (Japanese standard olfactory test), butter of yak milk, and incense from Lamaism temples. The words for expressing imagery were analyzed by multidimensional scaling and cluster analysis. Seven clusters of odors were obtained. The feature of these clusters were quite similar to that of primary odors which have been suggested by previous studies. However, the clustering of odors can not be explained on the basis of the primary-odor theory, but the information processing theory originally proposed by Miller (1956). These results support the usefulness of the Free Image-Association Test for investigating odor perception based on the images associated with odors.  相似文献

Odors are coded by glomerular activity patterns in the insect antennal lobe (AL) and in the mammalian olfactory bulb. We measured glomerular responses to 30 different odors in the AL of honeybees using calcium-sensitive dyes. By subsequently staining glomeruli and identifying individual glomerular outlines, we were able to compare the patterns between animals. Regardless of whether the odors were mixtures or pure substances, environmental odors or pheromones, their representations were highly conserved among individuals. Therefore, it may be possible to create a functional atlas of the AL in which particular molecular receptive ranges are attributed to each glomerulus.  相似文献

Whether olfactory working memory involves verbal representations or neural images of odor per se remains unclear. This study investigated whether verbal representation influences performance in an olfactory delayed-match-to-sample task and used monorhinal presentation to generate hypotheses as to the underlying anatomy of this mechanism. The main findings were that (a) nameable odorants were easier to remember than hard-to-name odorants and (b) the nameability effect was more pronounced when the evaluation was done across nostrils. Considering these results within a proposed model implies dual representation in olfactory working memory: All odors, nameable and hard to name, are represented both perceptually and verbally.  相似文献

The basis of olfactory signatures mediating human kin recognition was investigated in two experiments. The odors of mothers and offspring were correctly matched (by subjects unfamiliar with the stimulus individuals) at a greater than chance frequency. In contrast, subjects were not able reliably to match the odors of husbands and wives. These data support the hypotheses that characteristic individuals odors are genetically mediated and that kin recognition should be facilitated by the similarity of such familiar odors among close relatives.  相似文献

One of the characteristics of Alzheimer's disease is the early loss of neurons in pathways involved in processing olfactory information. Olfactory function was assessed in subjects with Alzheimer's disease using a conventional Smell Identification Test and a simple three odor match-to-sample problem. The patients exhibited a diminished capacity to identify common odors but were severely impaired in their ability to use novel odors in a match-to-sample task. Subjects with Parkinson's disease had a severe deficit for identifying common odors with the majority scoring as anosmic. Multiple sclerosis was not accompanied by detectable changes in olfactory functioning. The results of the Alzheimer's group are similar to recent animal studies that have shown lesions of the piriform-entorhinal cortex produce a variety of memory deficits that are particularly acute in tasks involving novel odors.  相似文献

The article specifies several important aspects related to the sense of smell in vertebrates. The idea that odors exert effects in the human brain though being not consciously perceived is introduced. Functional aspects related to cross-modal sensory interaction between olfaction and vision are highlighted. In particular, studies making use of electrophysiological methods providing high temporal resolution reveal an early processing stage around 300 ms and a later stage around 700 ms after stimulus onset. The early stage has been associated with subconscious olfactory information processing, whereas the later stage most likely reflects conscious odor perception. Specific interactions are described between olfaction and language and between olfaction and face processing in correlation with both stages of olfactory information processing. A consciously perceived odor can negatively affect language and face processing if these stimuli are presented and associated simultaneously, whereas simultaneous subconscious odor processing has the potential to improve memory formation in other stimulus modalities. Strikingly, the subconscious effect seems not to depend on odor valence. Besides a better understanding of the sense of olfaction itself, these findings on cross-modal integration support the idea that neural representations exist for semantic contents (object meaning) independent from particular sensory modalities. These representations can be referred to as meta representations because the information they contain is derived from a great variety of sensory information integrated into a semantic representation of an object. It is suggested that such meta representations represent the basic units for cognition and that they provide inputs during dreaming.  相似文献

Improved smell pleasantness after odor-taste associative learning in humans   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Whereas some aspects of olfactory hedonism in humans are present from birth, others form during development and throughout adulthood. Although it is generally agreed that such hedonic representations emerge by associative learning, it is not yet clear which learning parameters are prominent. The present study investigated the influence of number of trials on odor preference acquisition in human adults. Forty-eight subjects randomly assigned to three groups were tested in three sessions. In the first session, subjects ranked eight food odors from most pleasant to most unpleasant. The second session consisted in an associative learning, the two most neutral odors were randomly associated with a drink: one odor with water (CS-) and the other odor with a pleasant sweet solution (CS+). In the third session subjects ranked the eight food odors again. In group A, CS+ was paired three times with the US, and in group B only once; in group C, CS+ was paired only once with the US but with a total duration identical to that in group A. Results showed that CS+ was ranked as significantly more pleasant after learning in group A (p<.05), but not in groups B and C (p>.05). In conclusion, the study showed that a neutral smell can acquire positive emotional features after being paired with a pleasant taste, and that this learning depends on the number of associations between smell and taste.  相似文献

An earlier study in humans comparing the olfactory sensitivity of both nostrils revealed a small but significant advantage of the right nostril for detection and for olfactory quality discrimination. However lateralization was not evaluated for the perception of odor intensity and hedonic evaluation (pleasantness/unpleasantness). Thus we investigated lateralization of olfactory intensity and hedonic evaluation in right-handed healthy volunteers (n=186) from the HeDoS-F database (Hedonic Database of Smell-Franconia). For olfactory evaluation the Sniffin' Stick Test was employed with the parameters detection, discrimination, identification and extended by analogue hedonic and intensity rating scales. Over all odors subjects rated the perceived intensity significantly higher following stimulation of the right compared to the left nostril. The analysis of the single odors of the Sniffin' Stick Test consistently confirmed higher intensity ratings for the right compared to the left nostril reaching a statistically significant difference for 10 out of 16 odors. In contrast we found no significant differences between the nostrils for the hedonic estimates over all odors. Differences in odor detection, discrimination and identification did not reach a statistically significant level, but for all these parameters the scores of the right nostril were slightly higher compared to the left nostril. For odor identification, however, a statistical tendency was observed. Based on our results we concluded that olfactory intensity estimates represent the most sensitive parameter of olfactory lateralization.  相似文献

Two interlinked areas of debate within psychology are the existence of hemispheric specialization for olfactory processing and whether odors are processed primarily as perceptual codes or as a set of semantic features. This study compared accuracy in naming and judgments of familiarity by right handed subjects to common odors that were presented to the left or right nostrils. Results of the National Geographic Smell Survey were used to investigate the effects of pregnancy on olfactory perception and odor-related behavior. The responses to test odors and survey questions of 13,610 pregnant and 277,228 nonpregnant U.S. women between 20 and 40 years of age were analyzed. In comparison to nonpregnant women, pregnant women rated their own sense of smell lower, more often rated the test odors less pleasant smelling, more often classified the test odors as inedible, were less likely to report odor-evoked memories, and used perfume and cologne less frequently. Differences in odor detection and intensity rating did not favor either group.  相似文献

There are different postnatal sensitive periods throughout the development course of sensory functions. During sensitive periods, there is a biological display of an extreme neural sensitivity to the storage of experience-driven sensory information that is not present outside these developmental stages. This neural property is reflected in subjects’ reported preferences for sensory stimuli, such as odors and tastes. The human brain mapping approach (HBA) has demonstrated that disease-free human postnatal and later development of any sensory function parallels morphological and functional development of the CNS and that this development correlates with signal changes that have been acquired by means of neuroimaging techniques. Whether experience with tastes and/or odors has a stronger effect on the perception of gustatory and/or olfactory stimuli the earlier subjects are exposed to certain odors and tastes is still unknown. It is also unknown, whether as well as how this effect is reflected in brain activation patterns and whether we are currently able to identify sensitive periods of gustatory and olfactory development from the imaging signals. To answer these research questions, repeated exposure to tastes and/or odors should be applied in children of different age ranges in order to induce different age-related degrees of olfactory/gustatory preferences as well as different aged-related patterns of oxyhemoglobin (OH) and deoxyhemoglobin (DOH) changes that should be measured by means of the functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) technique.  相似文献

Sudden visual events capture attention involuntarily because they may signal potential threats. Some theoretical accounts consider that the biological significance of these events is established through the limbic structures. Thus, the manipulation of the limbic activity would affect attentional capture. Since these structures are directly linked to the olfactory system, we have tended to modulate their activity with olfactory stimulations. We have examined behavioral performance in a task of attentional capture by luminance under conditions of ambient odors. Our results show that attentional capture is indeed modulated by ambient odors, and that this modulation may depend on the odor's properties.  相似文献

Administration of morphine sulfate (MS) to pregnancy-terminated and postpartum lactating female rats disrupts both maternal behavior and postpartum aggression. Since the display of these behaviors may be heavily dependent on olfactory cues provided by the stimulus animals (rat pups and adult male rats, respectively), we examined whether MS was affecting the perception of the olfactory stimuli, and whether olfactory perception was modified by reproductive condition. In Experiment 1, lactating rats had their pups removed and were injected with MS (5.0 mg/kg, sc.) or saline. 60 min later they were placed into a two-choice apparatus, one side of which contained bedding soiled by neonates and the other clean bedding. Time spent on each side was recorded for a total of 5 min (300 s; chance = 150 s). Saline-treated mothers spent significantly more time on the pup-odor side, whereas MS-treated females spent significantly less. In Experiment 2, lactating females were treated with MS or saline and exposed to male odors (soiled bedding). MS significantly increased time spent on the side with male odors; when treated with saline, time spent was significantly reduced. Thus, in lactating rats. MS creates an aversion for pup odors while reducing the female's normal aversion toward male odors. In Experiment 3, ovariectomized (ovx) virgin females expressed neither an aversion nor a preference for the odor of pups following saline administration. After MS treatment, however, the virgins showed a distinct preference for pup odors. When exposed to male odors in Experiment 4 ovx virgins showed a marked preference for male odors after MS treatment, and neither a preference nor an aversion after saline. Experiment 5 examined pup odor preferences in intact virgins, early (Day 7), middle (Day 14), late-pregnant (Day 21), and prepartum (Day 22) rats. The pup odor preferences of virgin, Day 7, Day 14, and Day 21 pregnant rats were not different and generally were at chance levels. Day 22 pregnant females exhibited a marked preference for pup odors compared to chance levels, as well as compared to the other four groups. These findings suggest that opiates and endogenous opioids may regulate olfactory preferences and that alterations in this system may underlie normal behavioral changes toward conspecifics prepartum as well as during lactation.  相似文献
