Juvenile Mental Health Courts for Adjudicated Youth: Role Implications for Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Mental Health Nurses

TOPIC: Juvenile mental health courts for adjudicated youth. PURPOSE: To describe the role of psychiatric nurses in reducing mental health disparities for adjudicated youth via juvenile mental health courts. CONCLUSIONS: Juvenile mental health courts may provide a positive and effective alternative to incarceration for youth with mental health problems with psychiatric nurses playing a key role in program implementation.

Arrogance in the Workplace: Implications for Mental Health Nurses

Cultures of performativity may contribute to organizational and individual arrogance. Workplace organizations have individuals who at various times will display arrogance, which may manifest in behaviours, such as an exaggerated sense of self-importance, dismissiveness of others, condescending behaviors and an impatient manner. Arrogance is not a flattering label and irrespective of the reason or the position of power, in the context of organizational behaviors, may not be useful and may even be detrimental to the work environment. Thus, it is timely to reflect on the implications of arrogance in the workplace. Advocacy and empowerment can be undermined and relationships adversely impacted, including the achievement of positive consumer outcomes. This paper provides an introduction to arrogance, and then discusses arrogance to promote awareness of the potential consequences of arrogance and its constituent behaviors.     

Mental Health of the African Girl Child: Challenges for Nurses

In this paper, the ecological systems theory of child development is used as the framework for exploring research on the development of African children, especially girl children. The special problems faced by children and the challenges this raises for nurses also are described in this paper.     

Adolescent Coping Across Time: Implications for Psychiatric Mental Health Nurses

This article compares rural adolescents' coping responses before and after the behavioral intervention Teaching Kids to Cope with Anger (TKC-A). A quasi-experimental design was used, that included 94 (intervention) and 85 (control) students who were enrolled in three high schools in rural southwestern Pennsylvania. Results showed no statistically significant differences between the intervention and control groups' coping responses following the TKC- A intervention. The majority of youth in this study demonstrated healthy coping skills. In the future, the TKC-A needs to be integrated into the high school curriculum as a health promotion effort that is tailored to adolescents.     

Compulsive Hoarding: Overview and Implications for Community Health Nurses

Hoarding is a serious public health hazard that poses significant health and safety risks for individuals, families, and communities. Research indicates that compulsive hoarding is a growing social and environmental problem across the United States, affecting as many as 2–5% of the population. Hoarders often live chaotically in their own private clutter until it spreads so far that it evolves into medical emergencies or can only be contained by the law. Visiting clients in their homes provides community health nurses with the unique opportunity to identify cases of hoarding and connect individuals and their families with appropriate resources, potentially preventing catastrophic outcomes. Interventions such as case-finding, outreach, case management, community education, and advocacy may be implemented by the community health nurse to improve the health of this very vulnerable population. The aim of this article is to inform community health nurses of the complexity of this emerging phenomenon, its symptoms, treatments, and impacts on individuals, their families, and their communities.

目的:了解精神科与老年科护士心理健康状况,以便针对性地采取有效的干预措施。方法:采用症状自评量表SCL-90进行问卷调查。结果:老年科护士的总分和强迫症状、人际敏感、抑郁、焦虑、敌对、恐怖、精神病性的因子分高于精神科护士,二者相比有显著性差异(P<0.01),而躯体化和其他因子分相比无显著性差异(P>0.05)。结论:老年科护士心理健康状况不如精神科护士,应重视加强老年科护士心理健康教育。     

Mental Health Care Rights of Adolescents: What Mental Health Nurses Need to Know

Adolescents have certain rights regarding mental health care. There is a need for healthcare professionals, including nurses, to become more aware and knowledgeable of these rights. This article reviews the medical/legal rights of adolescents and their parents, and presents a history of relevant changes that have occurred in the parent-child relationship. It discusses also current issues pertinent to the mental health care of adolescents and identifies researchable questions.     

Loyalty in the Workplace: Some Considerations for Mental Health Nurses

Nurses are expected to be loyal to their patients, employer and the nursing profession, while also remaining ‘loyal’ to their own values and aims as both a person and clinician. Loyalty therefore is of central importance to how we relate to people in personal and professional relationships and may affect our attitude to the organization we work for. This column explores the concept of loyalty, and its role in professional relationships, behaviour and practice. Ways that loyalty can be influential in achieving personal, patient and organizational outcomes are explored and the potential to enhance loyalty is considered.

为探讨ＩＣＵ护士与普通内科健康状况的异同,应用临床症状自评量表ＳＣＬ－９０,对二者进行问卷调查和对比分析,结果显示ＩＣＵ护士的总均分、等主要轱子得分均显著高于普通内科护士,提示ＩＣＵ护士应进一步加强精神保健。     

Mental Health and Academic Achievement: Role of School Nurses

PURPOSE: This article discusses how school nurses promote mental health and subsequent academic achievement by screening and referral for children demonstrating mental health problems. Nursing interventions are discussed at the individual, systems, and community levels. CONCLUSION: Mental health problems can affect school performance and academic achievement. When mental health problems are not recognized, students may be unable to reach their academic potential. School nurses are in a key position to provide interventions to address mental health and academic achievement. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: The role of school nurses and examples of mental health collaborative activities are provided.
