The Inaugural Meeting of World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies （WFCMS） Specialty Committee of Translation and the First International Conference on Translation of Chinese Medicine and Chinese Culture （including English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean and Arabian etc.） will be held in July 2008 in Shanghai, P. R. China （the specific date will be decided in the second announcement）. The aim of the Specialty Committee of Translation is to unite translators of Chinese medicine and Chinese culture in the world to promote international dissemination, exchange and development of Chinese medicine and Chinese culture. Abstracts from the first annual conference of the Chinese Society of Medicine in Germany.

The Chinese Society of Medicine (Gesellschat Chinescher Mediziner in Deutschland) in Germany was founded and held its first annual scientific conference on 5th-6th August. 1994 in University Clinic Essen. About 30 researchers from different cities of Germany attended the conference. The conference received more than 70 papers , and 22 papers were selected for oral presentation, reporting the latest research results in the fields of basic and clinical medicine followed by discussion. It is of greal help for obtaining new inspirations in the corresponding fields. The participants wish to establish close relationship and utilize their own superiority, to cooperate each other and to obtain new achievements in the fields of medicine.

Herbal Medicine in the Treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease

Associated with the aging of our world population is a sharp increase in the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease,which not only poses a significant health issue but also presents a serious social problem.Although pharmacological treatments were developed based on existing hypotheses,the disease pathogenesis remains to be fully elucidated.Given the complexity of Alzheimer’s disease,Chinese herbal medicine appears to have therapeutic potential for Alzheimer’s disease through multi-target and multi-pathway approach at cellular and molecular levels and holistic adjustment of the body at organ system levels.Recently,a significant breakthrough has been made in the research of Chinese medicine for Alzheimer’s disease.In this article,we review the experimental research progress in understanding how Chinese medicine could be used for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.

Which Research Is Needed to Support Clinical Decision-Making on Integrative Medicine?——Can Comparative Effectiveness Research Close the Gap?

<正>In clinical research on complementary and integrative medicine, experts and scientists have often pursued a research agenda in spite of an incomplete understanding of the needs of end users.Consequently,the majority of previous clinical trials have mainly assessed the efficacy of interventions.Scant data is available on their effectiveness.Comparative effectiveness research(CER) promises to support decision makers by generating evidence that compares the benefits and harms of the best care options.This evidence,more generalizable than the evidence generated by traditional randomized controlled trials(RCTs),is better suited to inform real-world care decisions.An emphasis on CER supports the development of the evidence base for clinical and policy decision-making.Whereas in most areas of complementary and integrative medicine data on comparative effectiveness is scarce,available acupuncture research already contributes to CER evidence.This paper will introduce CER and make suggestions for future research.
