OBJECTIVE: To identify the differences in food habits and preferences among the adolescents according to socio-demographic characteristics. DESIGN: Cross-sectional, cluster design survey in 2002. SETTING: Eight middle schools in two distinct socio-economic areas of the Jiangsu province, China. SUBJECTS: Some 824 young adolescents (12-14 y) attending public schools with a response rate of 99%. METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire containing questions on food and meal frequencies, food preferences and socio-demographic characteristics was used. RESULTS: High socio-economic status (SES) and urban residence was positively associated with intake of high-energy foods, such as foods of animal origin, Western style foods and dairy products. In all, 76% of the students had three meals a day regularly , but 8.1% urban students vs 3.4% rural students had breakfast only 1-3 times per week or less often. Daily fruit consumption was fairly common, but with clear differences by SES. Only about 42% of the boys and 55% of the girls from low SES families ate fruit daily, compared with 66% and 72%, respectively in the high SES families. Urban boys had the lowest proportion of daily consumers of vegetables (67.0%). More urban students drank milk daily than the rural students (68.7 vs 38.5%). The frequency of milk drinking also showed a strong positive association with SES. About 10% of the high SES boys consumed hamburgers daily compared with 2.8% of the low SES boys. More than half of the students reported a liking for Western style fast foods including hamburgers, soft drinks and chocolate. Among high SES boys, 21.5% consumed soft drinks on a daily basis; however, as many as 72.3% wanted to drink soft drinks more often if they could afford it. CONCLUSIONS: SES and urban location were positively associated with frequency of intake of high-energy foods. Reported food preferences may enforce this trend. Nutrition education for adolescents and parents is needed to promote healthy eating. Health Authorities should strengthen the monitoring of food intake and its association with overweight/obesity. The aim of the study was to estimate chosen dietary habits of a cohort of students in the years 2000-2003. The frequency of the intake of chosen groups of food products, the number of meals and snacks between meals were considered. The highest percentage of both male and female students involved in the questionnaire investigations in the study period consumed three meals a day. The number of students having snacks between meals (every third person) did not change during that period. However, the decrease was observed in drinking by students one glass of milk a day. In the years 2000-2003, the reduction in the frequency of consumption of whole-grain breads and cereals in female students and its increase in male students was noted. The number of men consuming meat and its products was increased. More than half of the students of both sexes consumed fish once a week and this tendency was maintained for the whole study period. An increase was noted in the percentage of female students consuming vegetable salads and in the percentage of male students eating fruit.  相似文献

An Australian study of childhood leukaemia (Aus-ALL) previously reported that control participation was positively associated with socio-economic status (SES). A similar study of childhood brain tumours (Aus-CBT) was carried out 4 years later, and this paper compares control participation and its relationship with SES in the two studies. To assess the representativeness of controls in terms of SES, the addresses of controls were linked to Australian Bureau of Statistics Census 2006 Collection Districts (CDs), and hence to area-based indices of SES. Independent sample t-tests and chi-squared tests were used to compare the SES indices of CDs where Aus-CBT controls lived with those where Aus-ALL controls lived and with those of all CDs where Australian families lived. The overall percentage of eligible families who agreed to participate was lower in Aus-CBT (53.9%) than in Aus-ALL (70.3%). Control families in both studies were of higher SES than the general population, while the distribution of SES among recruited controls was similar in both studies. These findings provide some reassurance that the observed decline in research participation over time may not be associated with an increasingly unrepresentative participant population.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between mortality from cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and socio-economic status (SES) in Sweden and to estimate to what extent the difference between a province with low mortality and the rest of Sweden was dependent on socio-economic factors. A population-based retrospective study with a historical prospective approach was performed covering a 10-y period in the province of Halland, Sweden, as well as Sweden as a whole. Altogether 1,654,744 men and 1,592,467 women were included, of whom 45,394 men and 43,403 women were from Halland, distributed according to SES. Multivariate analysis with Poisson regression was used. Relative risks with 95% confidence intervals were calculated. Both men and women with a low SES showed a significantly higher risk of death from CVD in Sweden as a whole. The risk was 23% higher for male blue-collar workers and 44% higher for female blue-collar workers when compared to their white-collar counterparts. The level of mortality in Halland was 14% lower compared to the country as a whole when only age was taken into account. When the socio-economic variable was also included, this figure was 8%. The results show the substantial significance of social differences with respect to CVD mortality. The effect of SES seems to be more important than that of geographical conditions when the latter are isolated from socio-economic influence.  相似文献

The study was conducted in Saudi Arabia to assess the nutritional status of primary school Sudanese pupils and explore its’ correlates. Anthropometric measurements of 400 (200 males and 200 females) students of age 6–12 were taken. Their daily food intake was assessed using food frequency and 24 h recall method. Data about the socio-economic characteristics of the students’ families was collected through personal interview using a questionnaire. The study revealed that 31 and 8.75 % of the respondents suffer from underweight and overweight, respectively. The respondents’ average daily intake of calories and fiber was significantly lower than that of the DRI, while their intake of protein, carbohydrates, unsaturated fat, some vitamins and iron was significantly higher than that of the DRI (unbalanced meals). Apart from the family monthly income none of the hypothesized predictors of the respondents’ nutritional status were found to be significantly correlated with the students’ nutritional status indicators.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To investigate Australian suicide differentials in males and females by three area-based measures of socio-economic status (SES). METHODS: Suicide data for 1994-98 were used to investigate area-based gradients of SES for the Index of Relative Socio-Economic Disadvantage (IRSED) (an overall measure of SES), the Index of Economic Resources (IER), and the Index of Education and Occupation (IEO), using Poisson regression models adjusting for age, country-of-birth and urban-rural residence. RESULTS: After adjusting for age, country-of-birth and urban-rural residence, significant increasing linear trends in suicide risk from high to low quintiles of SES were evident in males for the IRSED (an average multiplicative increase in suicide risk of 8% per quintile), IER (9% increase) and IEO (5% increase). For females, there was no evident SES gradient for the IRSED after adjusting for age, country-of-birth and urban-rural residence, but a significant positive linear trend from high to low quintiles of SES was found for the IER (6% increase per quintile). A significant decreasing linear trend (increasing suicide risk with increasing SES) was evident for the IEO (30% per quintle). CONCLUSION: Male suicide is positively associated with all three measures of SES examined. Female suicide is significantly associated with the IER (positive association) and IEO (negative), and because of this is not associated with the overall measure of SES. These findings partly explain why female suicide has been found to be poorly correlated with area-based measures of SES. IMPLICATIONS: Specific components of area-based socio-economic status provide a clearer picture of socio-economic suicide differentials in Australian females, with implications for population-based preventive strategies.  相似文献

Attempts to describe and explain socio-economic differences in health have mainly focused on adults. Little is known about the mechanisms of the relationship between socio-economic status (SES) and health in adolescence including inconsistent findings between SES and health among young people. Data were derived from representative samples of 13 and 15-year-old students in 33 European and North American countries (n = 97,721) as part of the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study 2001/2002. Multilevel logistic regression models were used to investigate socio-economic differences in self-rated health among adolescents and the contribution of health-related behaviours to the explanation of such differences. Odds ratios of self-rated health by family affluence were calculated before and after adjustment for behavioural factors (tobacco smoking, physical activity, television use, breakfast intake, consumption of fruits and vegetables). On average, adolescents from low affluent families had an odds ratio for low self-rated health of 1.84 for boys and 1.80 for girls, compared to those from high affluent families. The majority of behavioural factors were significantly associated with family affluence in all countries and explained part of the relationship between self-rated health and family affluence. Smoking, physical activity and breakfast consumption showed the largest independent effect on health. The present study suggests that behavioural factors in early adolescence partly account for the association between self-rated health and socio-economic status. Prevention programmes should target unhealthy behaviours of adolescents from lower socio-economic groups to help prevent future life-course disadvantages in terms of health and social inequalities.  相似文献

Preventing smoking initiation among adolescents of lower socio-economic groups is crucial for the reduction of socio-economic inequalities in health. The aim of the present study was to examine whether effective smoking prevention interventions in Europe are equally effective among adolescents of low- and high-socio-economic status (SES). As part of the European Union-funded TEENAGE project, three school-based smoking prevention intervention studies in Europe were selected for secondary analyses: (i) a Dutch class competition intervention, (ii) the European Smoking Prevention Framework (ESFA) study and (iii) the A Stop Smoking in Schools Trial (ASSIST) intervention. All three studies differed in effectiveness by SES. The Dutch class competition study only had a significant effect among higher SES adolescents. The results for the ESFA study and ASSIST study were mixed and depended on which SES indicator was used. The conclusion of the study is that stratified analyses provide important insights in differential intervention effects for higher and lower socio-economic groups. Although findings from the different studies were mixed, interventions that use a social network approach in which youngsters are allowed to deliver the intervention themselves may be a successful strategy in targeting adolescents from lower socio-economic groups.  相似文献

French university canteens offer structured meals at a fixed moderate price. We examined whether eating regularly at university canteens was associated with socioeconomic status (SES) or dietary practices. The study data came from a cross-sectional study of a random sample of 1723 students aged 18-24 years, in their first year of university in 2005-2006, enrolled in the universities of southeastern France (response rate=71%). Self-reported dietary practices were collected with a behavioral questionnaire. Adjusted logistic regressions showed that eating regularly at university canteens was less frequent among students with less than ?300 monthly resources and not living with their families (OR=0.68 [95%CI: 0.49-0.94]). It was also positively associated, regardless of SES, with the consumption of at least five servings of fruit/vegetables daily (OR=1.42 [1.05-1.92]) and one serving of meat/fish daily (OR=1.41 [1.13-1.76]) but not with either restricting fatty food (OR=1.04 [0.81-1.33]) or never/rarely adding salt to food (OR=1.06 [0.85-1.32]). Eating regularly at university canteens was less frequent among less well-off students and was positively associated with some healthier self-reported dietary habits. Further research is needed to confirm these results in the overall student population in France and to understand the determinants of university canteen utilization.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE:To determine the impact of nutritional status in a multicausal approach of socio-economic, socio-cultural, family, intellectual, educational and demographic variables at the onset of elementary school in 1987 on the educational situation of these children in 1998, when they should have graduated from high school. SETTING: Chile's Metropolitan Region. DESIGN: Prospective, observational and 12-year follow-up study. METHODS: A representative sample of 813 elementary first grade school-age children was randomly chosen in 1987. The sample was assessed in two cross-sectional studies. The first cross-sectional study was carried out in at the onset of elementary school in 1987 and the second was carried out in 1998, 12-years later, when they should be graduating from high school. In 1998, 632 adolescent students were located and their educational situation was registered (dropout, delayed, graduated and not located). At the onset of elementary school were determined the nutritional status, socio-economic status (SES), family characteristics, intellectual ability (IA), scholastic achievement (SA) and demographic variables. Statistical analysis included variance tests and Scheffe's test was used for comparison of means. Pearson correlation coefficients and logistic regression were used to establish the most important independent variables at the onset of elementary school in 1987 that affect the educational situation 1998. Data were analysed using the statistical analysis system (SAS). RESULTS: Logistic regression revealed that SES, IA, SA and head circumference-for-age Z score at the onset of elementary school in 1987 were the independent variables with the greatest explanatory power in the educational situation of school-age children in 1998. CONCLUSIONS: These parameters at an early school age are good predictors of the educational situation later and these results can be useful for nutrition and educational planning in early childhood.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: While the graded relationship between socio-economic status (SES) and risk behaviour in adulthood has been the subject of intense research, far less is known about socio-economic differences in health-related behaviour among adolescents. The purpose of the present study is to examine socio-economic differences in adolescent tobacco use in Germany as well as changes in the relationship between 1994 and 2002. METHODS: Data were obtained from the 'Health Behaviour in School-aged Children' study conducted in the largest federal state of Germany, Northrhine-Westfalia, in 1994, 1998 and 2002. The analysis is based on 11.401 11- to 15-year old students. Socio-economic differences in regular smoking were studied in relation to both parental SES (family affluence) and students own SES (school type). Trends from 1994 to 2002 were analysed for each category of family affluence and school type separately. RESULTS: Family affluence only had a weak effect on regular smoking while for type of school a strong social gradient for smoking was found for both the genders. Trend analyses within the different family affluence and school-type categories showed that smoking has generally increased in all socio-economic groups. The level of socio-economic differences remained virtually unchanged in girls and boys in the past 10 years in Germany. CONCLUSIONS: The same relationships of family affluence and school type with smoking have persisted for almost a decade in Germany. Students own SES affects adolescent smoking substantially. Prevention programmes should focus on the school setting in order to tackle current as well as future health inequalities.  相似文献

Food consumption patterns in urban environments are changing and diversifying. This longitudinal study of individual food consumption took into account the coexistence of two types of food consumption: within the home and outside the home. This article presents a summary of qualitative and quantitative research carried out in Bamako, Mali in 1995 and 1996 among 74 families from different socio-economic groups. It provides a comprehensive analysis of their food strategies (at the family and individual level) and their nutritional intake. In the home, similarities are found: three meals a day, and a single dish with a "base" ingredient and sauce at each meal. Heterogeneity is expressed in the number of dishes prepared each day, the type of "base", and ingredients in the sauce. Almost all individuals, no matter what their age or socio-economic status, consume food outside the home. This does not substitute meals at home. Street food accounts for 19-27% of food expenses and provides 134-417 Kcal per day per person. It offers a market for local products not often consumed at home and provides a necessary nutritional supplement to people from families of intermediate or low socio-economic status, especially for children. For people from higher socio-economic levels, street food provides mainly gustative and symbolic satisfaction. Following the devaluation of the CFA franc, the most disadvantaged populations seem to have reached a limit in their capacity for adaptation, which includes not only the quality of consumed products but also quantities. In order to ensure food security in urban areas, food and nutritional policies must take into account all the factors that influence food consumption behaviours of different groups of individuals, in particular the behaviours inside and outside the home. The aim of the study was the analysis of pro-health nutritional behaviors among 100 female students Medical University of Warsaw tested by the questionnaire method. The results of the study show that nutritional behaviors of students who learned human nutrition were significantly better in accordance with dietary guidelines. The most frequent consumed group of products were fruits and dairy products. Consumption of vegetables, number and regularity of meals had been better among dietetics students then among midwifery and nursing students.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: In an attempt to elucidate broader determinants of adolescent dietary intake and habits, food intakes and selected food behaviours of grades 9 and 10 students from Ontario and Alberta were examined according to school region socio-economic status and urban/rural locale. METHODS: Using a stratified random sample framework, 53 high schools from 28 school boards were recruited (45 public and 8 private; 33 urban and 20 rural). Median family income for Canada Post's forward sortation area of the school was used to define school region SES. Public and private schools were compared as a proxy measure of SES. A web-based survey of food intake and behaviours, including a 24-hour diet recall and food frequency questionnaire, was completed by 2,621 students in grades 9 and 10. Comparison of intakes and behaviours by school designation as urban/rural, public/private or regional SES (generalized linear model procedure) controlled for student gender and grade distribution and number of participants within schools. RESULTS: School region SES ranged from dollars 40,959 to dollars 85,922/year. Vegetable and fruit consumption (p < 0.001), fibre intake (p < 0.001) and frequency of breakfast consumption (p < 0.01) increased with increasing income, while added sugar intake decreased (p < 0.01). Private versus public school students had lower intakes of sweetened drinks (p < 0.01) and higher intakes of fibre (p=0.02). Rural students reported higher mean intakes of calcium (1106 vs. 995 mg/day, respectively, p = 0.03) and milk products (2.7 vs. 2.3 servings/day, p < 0.01) than urban students. CONCLUSION: Selected food behaviours of youth from Ontario and Alberta improve with increasing school SES and vary with rural/urban school locale. Identifying regional demographics may be useful in tailoring healthy eating programs to the specific school.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Both maternal socio-economic status (SES) and growth measures are themselves interrelated and are also related to infant birthweight. The objective of this study is to compare the relative importance of such maternal measures as determinants of birthweight of female infants-the prospective mothers of the next generation. METHODS: The study base was derived from a population-based multiethnic intergenerational cohort: the Washington State Intergenerational Cohort. Infants of mothers from four ethnic groups were included: non-Hispanic Whites, African Americans, Native Americans, and Hispanics. We generated simple, partial, and multiple correlation coefficients to investigate the association between birthweight and the maternal growth and SES measures. RESULTS: While there were slight differences among the ethnic groups, generally each of three maternal pre-conceptional growth measures-birthweight, stature, and pre-pregnant weight-was a stronger predictor of female infant birthweight than were each of the five maternal SES factors-age, parity, marital status, educational attainment, and prenatal care onset. After accounting for the proportion of variation in birthweight explained by the maternal growth measures and maternal smoking, the addition of the five SES variables added relatively little to the prediction of infant birthweight. The maximal multiple correlation coefficients (R2) yield values ranging from 9.5% to 12.8%. CONCLUSIONS: A mother's growth before pregnancy is a stronger predictor of infant birthweight than is her current socio-economic circumstance. Since the mother's growth must have been influenced by the socio-economic circumstances of her family of upbringing, this further highlights the intergenerational contribution on a woman's reproductive success.  相似文献

探讨健康素养、睡眠质量与中学生抑郁症状的关联,为促进中学生心理健康提供指导依据.方法 选取沈阳某中学初一至高三年级的775名学生作为调查对象,使用问卷调查法收集资料,调查内容包括人口统计学信息、中国青少年互动性健康素养问卷、匹兹堡睡眠质量指数量表和抑郁自评量表.结果 中学生青少年互动性健康素养问卷总得分为(106.49±19.87)分.初中生和家庭经济状况良好的学生健康素养水平较高,差异均有统计学意义(x2值分别为12.799,16.487,P值均<0.01).中学生睡眠障碍和抑郁症状的总检出率分别为18.3%和20.9%.高中生睡眠障碍检出率(20.3%)高于初中生(14.3%)(x2=4.066,P<0.05);自评家庭经济状况差者睡眠障碍(27.0%)和抑郁症状(36.5%)的检出率均高于家庭经济状况较好者(x2值分别为6.710,10.195,P值均<0.05).多因素Logistic回归分析显示,健康素养和睡眠质量的交互作用与抑郁症状之间存在相关性,相同睡眠质量情况下,健康素养水平越低,中学生抑郁症状发生风险越大,呈现剂量一反应关系(P值均<0.05).结论 通过提高健康素养水平,可有助于降低抑郁症状的发生.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to determine the nutritional value and nutrients provided by each meal and snack of consumed by university students. Subjects were randomly selected from volunteer students at five universities in Ankara. A sample of 400 students (167 female and 233 male) aged between 19 and 24 years participated in this study. A questionnaire designed to assess general characteristics, anthropometric measurements, and 24 hours dietary records was administered using face to face interviews. According to body mass index classifications, 69.5% of male students, and 77.7% of female students were found to be in the normal weight categories. Overweight categories were found to be 25.1% and 5.6% for males and females, respectively. Breakfast and lunch were the most frequently skipped meals, with a total of 47.7% of students skipping breakfast and 25.2% skipping lunch. The percentages of energy deficiency were found to be 78.4% in males, and 81.1% in females. Dinner was the main meal for consumption of energy and the other nutrients, except saturated fatty acids, for both genders. Also, dinner was the largest contributor of energy in both genders. Students ate more bread, cereals, and meat at dinner than during the other meals and snacks. Fruit was consumed more during snacks than at the other meals by all students. It was concluded that students need more nutritional information about healthy nutritional habits, adequate intake of nutrients, and ideal body weights.  相似文献

The aim was to study whether physical activity (PA) interventions in European teenagers are equally effective in adolescents of low versus high socio-economic status (SES). Based on a systematic review (Project TEENAGE), three school-based studies for secondary analyses were selected. SES stratified analyses were run in: (i) a Belgian multi-component intervention, (ii) a French multi-component intervention and (iii) a Belgian computer-tailored education trial. Results of the secondary analyses showed that no overall significant differences between low and high SES groups were found, but some interesting specific effects were revealed. Results from the first study showed an increase in objective PA in the low SES group (P = 0.015) compared with no significant effects in the high SES group. In the second study, larger effects were found in adolescents of high SES (increase of 11 min day(-1) P < 0.001), compared with adolescents of lower SES (increase of 7 min day(-1), P = 0.02) at the longer term. The third study showed a positive effect on school-related PA in adolescents of high SES (P < 0.05) and on leisure time transportation in adolescents of low SES (P < 0.05). To conclude, we were not able to show a significant widening or narrowing of inequalities in European adolescents.  相似文献

This paper examines the views of Hong Kong community leaders on the underlying issues that affect family health, happiness and harmony (3Hs) in Hong Kong. Using a community reconnaissance method, a series of individual in-depth interviews with 26 leaders that represent neighbourhoods of diverse socio-economic status (SES) from June to August 2008 were conducted. Participants considered that changing family structure, economic situation and strong work ethic are the most salient factors that affect family 3Hs. The deprived comprehensive social security assistance recipients, single-parent families and migrant women were considered to be the most vulnerable groups to breakdown in family 3Hs and particularly, they lack family resources. Families from different SES have to overcome different challenges in order to achieve and sustain family 3Hs. Leaders from low SES neighbourhood were concerned more about providing tangible help such as child care facilities to improve family resources, whereas leaders from high SES neighbourhood focused more on preventive interventions such as education on relationship skills to achieve better family well-being. The findings offer insights in designing effective social marketing education campaigns and family-friendly workplace policy to promote social harmony through the maintenance of 3Hs families.  相似文献
