Hyperparathyroidism: Collected cases

All the reported cases present many or all of the clinical features characteristic of hyperparathyroidism, and in all of those in which surgical or postmortem exploration of the neck was performed definite tumors of one or more parathyroid glands were found. The skeletal changes consisted of osteoporosis, fibrocystic changes, osteoclastomas and spontaneous fractures. All the patients complained of bone pains and weakness, many of constipation, and several of symptoms associated with renal calculi. Diminution in stature and skeletal deformities were noted frequently. In those patients with the studies of blood and the urinary chemistries there were definitely demonstrable, hypercalcinemia, hypophosphonemia, hypercalcinuria and hyperphosphouria.     

Cyclops : Case report

A para iv, having an uneventful prenatal course, spontaneously delivered a stillborn cyclopic monster. The important pathological findings were a single median eye above which was a median proboscis. Radiographic findings revealed a microcephalic skull containing one large orbit located in the median line.     

Ingrown toe-nail: A clinical study

Extensive review of the literature and considerable clinical experience with the handling of ingrown toe-nails have prompted the writer to summarize the present status of the subject, and to outline a simplified mode of management that will be applicable to any stage of the lesion, and that will incur a minimum loss of time to the patient.     

Gastric cancer : Contemporary aspects

Records of 403 patients with gastric cancer seen between 1957 and 1966 at the Lahey Clinic Foundation have been analyzed. While the operability rate was 94 per cent and the resectability rate was 58 per cent, the cure rate was only 11 per cent and was unchanged from the previous decade. Significant correlation occurs with location, clinical type, histologic type, size of tumor, and number of lymph node metastases. The surgical approach is aggressive in exploration and in treating extensive but resectable cancers but is conservative for the average cancers and does not include resection of spleen, omentum, pancreas, and total stomach if possible.     

Wound infection: Acute versus chronic cholecystitis

Wound infection in 239 patients who underwent cholecystectomy were analyzed retrospectively. Seventeen per cent of the patients with acute cholecystitis had wound infection compared with 8.9 per cent of patients with chronic cholecystitis. Bacteriology of wound infections revealed Staphylococcus aureus in 76.4 per cent of the chronic cholecystitis group and in 12.5 per cent of the acute cholecystitis group. Wound infection in the acute cholecystitis group involved gram-negative rods predominantly.
