Background

Oligosaccharides may alter postnatal immune development by influencing the constitution of gastrointestinal bacterial flora.

Aims

To investigate the effect of a prebiotic mixture of galacto‐ and long chain fructo‐oligosaccharides on the incidence of atopic dermatitis (AD) during the first six months of life in formula fed infants at high risk of atopy.

Methods

Prospective, double‐blind, randomised, placebo controlled trial; 259 infants at risk for atopy were enrolled. A total of 102 infants in the prebiotic group and 104 infants in the placebo group completed the study. If bottle feeding was started, the infant was randomly assigned to one of two hydrolysed protein formula groups (0.8 g/100 ml prebiotics or maltodextrine as placebo). All infants were examined for clinical evidence of atopic dermatitis. In a subgroup of 98 infants, faecal flora was analysed.

Results

Ten infants (9.8%; 95 CI 5.4–17.1%) in the intervention group and 24 infants (23.1%; 95 CI 16.0–32.1%) in the control group developed AD. The severity of the dermatitis was not affected by diet. Prebiotic supplements were associated with a significantly higher number of faecal bifidobacteria compared with controls but there was no significant difference in lactobacilli counts.

Conclusion

Results show for the first time a beneficial effect of prebiotics on the development of atopic dermatitis in a high risk population of infants. Although the mechanism of this effect requires further investigation, it appears likely that oligosaccharides modulate postnatal immune development by altering bowel flora and have a potential role in primary allergy prevention during infancy.  相似文献

BACKGROUND:

Ventilator-induced lung injury is a recognized risk factor for bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

OBJECTIVE:

To determine whether primary continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), defined as CPAP without previous endotracheal intubation for any indication, can reduce the need for intubation and mechanical ventilation in infants born at ≤32 weeks’ gestational age.

METHODS:

The literature was reviewed using the methodology for systematic reviews for the Consensus on Resuscitation Science adapted from the American Heart Association’s International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation.

RESULTS:

Fourteen studies were reviewed. Eleven studies provided varying degrees of supportive evidence (level of evidence 3 to 4) that the use of primary CPAP can reduce the need for intubation and mechanical ventilation.

CONCLUSION:

The use of CPAP as a primary intervention and mode of respiratory support is an option for infants ≤32 weeks’ gestation, but avoidance of intubation and mechanical ventilation is more likely in mature infants >27 weeks’ gestation.  相似文献

BACKGROUND:

The use of mechanical ventilation to treat respiratory distress syndrome in preterm infants has been associated with the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia. As part of a quality improvement initiative to reduce the incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia in preterm infants, a new practice guideline for the management of respiratory distress syndrome was developed and adopted into practice in a neonatal intensive care unit in February 2012.

OBJECTIVE:

To evaluate the effects of implementing the new guideline in regard to the use of mechanical ventilation and surfactant, and the incidence of bronchopulmonary dypslasia.

METHODS:

An historical cohort of very preterm infants (gestational age 260 to 326 weeks) born one year before guideline implementation was compared with a similar cohort of infants born one year following guideline implementation. Data were collected retrospectively from the local neonatal intensive care unit database.

RESULTS:

A total of 272 preterm infants were included in the study: 129 in the preguideline cohort and 143 in the postguideline cohort. Following the implementation of the guideline, the proportion of infants treated with ongoing mechanical ventilation was reduced from 49% to 26% (P<0.001) and there was a trend toward a reduction in bronchopulmonary dysplasia (27% versus 18%; P=0.07). There was no difference in the proportion of infants treated with surfactant (54% versus 50%).

CONCLUSION:

The implementation of the practice guideline helped to minimize the use of ongoing mechanical ventilation in preterm infants.  相似文献

Background:

The most common reason of respiratory distress in the newborn is transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN). There are some reports saying that TTN is associated with increased frequencies of wheezing attacks.

Objectives:

The aims of this study were to determine the risk factors associated with TTN and to determine the association between TTN and the development of wheezing syndromes in early life.

Materials and Methods:

In a historical cohort study, we recorded the characteristics of 70 infants born at the Shohadaye Kargar Hospital in Yazd between March 2005 and March 2009 and who were hospitalized because of TTN in the neonatal intensive-care unit. We called their parents at least four years after the infants were discharged from the hospital and asked about any wheezing attacks. Seventy other infants with no health problems during the newborn period were included in the study as the control group.

Results:

The rate of wheezing attacks in newborns with TTN was more than patients with no TTN diagnosis (P = 0.014). TTN was found to be an independent risk factor for later wheezing attacks (relative risk [RR] = 2.8).

Conclusions:

The most obvious finding of this study was that TTN was an independent risk factor for wheezing attacks. So long-term medical care is suggested for these patients who may be at risk, because TTN may not be as transient as has been previously thought.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE:

Palivizumab has been shown to decrease respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) hospitalization rates in preterm infants and infants with chronic lung disease. The objective of the present study was to determine whether the use of palivizumab during the 1998/99 RSV season would have resulted in a cost-saving in infants discharged from Edmonton hospitals.

DESIGN:

A retrospective study of RSV hospitalizations was performed by contacting parents and reviewing hospital lists. The net cost of using palivizumab was determined by comparing the cost of giving the drug from November 1, 1998 to April 1, 1999 with the cost of potentially averted medical transports and hospitalizations.

POPULATION:

One hundred fifty-nine infants discharged from Edmonton hospitals who met the Canadian Paediatric Society’s criteria for receiving palivizumab during the 1998/99 RSV season were studied.

RESULTS:

The cost of using palivizumab in these 159 study infants would have been $753,300. The infants had 21 RSV hospitalizations and required four medical transports. The estimated cost of RSV hospital-based care for these infants was $168,888. Assuming a drug efficacy of 39% in infants with chronic lung disease and 78% in infants born before 33 weeks’ gestation with no chronic lung disease, $121,147 of these costs could have been averted if palivizumab had been used.

CONCLUSIONS:

The net cost to the health care system of using palivizumab, as recommended in the Canadian Paediatric Society guidelines, in study infants in northern Alberta during the 1998/99 RSV season would have been $632,153.  相似文献

Objectives

To determine whether abnormalities of lung volume and/or airway function were associated with wheeze at follow‐up in infants born very prematurely and to identify risk factors for wheeze.

Design

Lung function data obtained at 1 year of age were collated from two cohorts of infants recruited into the UKOS and an RSV study, respectively.

Setting

Infant pulmonary function laboratory.

Patients

111 infants (mean gestational age 26.3 (SD 1.6) weeks).

Interventions

Lung function measurements at 1 year of age corrected for gestational age at birth. Diary cards and respiratory questionnaires were completed to document wheeze.

Main outcome measures

Functional residual capacity (FRCpleth and FRCHe), airways resistance (Raw), FRCHe:FRCpleth and tidal breathing parameters (TPTEF:TE).

Results

The 60 infants who wheezed at follow‐up had significantly lower mean FRCHe, FRCHe:FRCpleth and TPTEF:TE, but higher mean Raw than the 51 without wheeze. Regression analysis demonstrated that gestational age, length at assessment, family history of atopy and a low FRCHe:FRCpleth were significantly associated with wheeze.

Conclusions

Wheeze at follow‐up in very prematurely born infants is associated with gas trapping, suggesting abnormalities of the small airways.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE:

To compare the incidence of feeding problems at the first feed between neonates born with meconium-stained amniotic fluid (MSAF) and those born without MSAF.

DESIGN:

A prospective observational study conducted over a one-year period.

SETTING:

A level 2 neonatal unit.

POPULATION STUDIED:

A total of 2828 neonates were studied, including 275 neonates with MSAF. All neonates were born after more than 34 weeks of gestation, and had no birth asphyxia, hemodynamic, respiratory distress or major congenital anomalies. The neonates were offered a feed within 1 h of birth, and the incidence of early feeding problems (ie, retching, vomiting, slow feeding or poor suck) was studied.

RESULTS:

Feeding problems at the first feed developed in 55 infants (13 of 275 with MSAF and 42 of 2533 without MSAF). Feeding problems were more common in infants with MSAF (P=0.001, relative risk=2.8, 95% CI 1.45 to 5.63), regardless of the type of MSAF (thin or thick). Although fetal distress was more frequent in the MSAF group, there were no differences in the 1 and 5 min Apgar scores whether meconium was present. Maternal sedation was not found to be a contributing factor. The mechanical and chemical actions of meconium inside the stomach requires further study.

CONCLUSION:

Feeding problems at the first feed are 2.8 times more frequent in neonates born with MSAF, regardless of the consistency of the amniotic fluid. Mothers of such infants need to be informed and supported during feeding to minimize discouragement. The demands on the nursing staff must be anticipated accordingly.  相似文献

BACKGROUND:

Health care workers have long observed increased rates of hospital admissions for respiratory illness in infants from the northern regions of Canada. Particularly high rates have been reported in the Inuit population. The purpose of the present study was to compare rates of hospital admission in Inuit versus non-Inuit infants from the perspective of a single northern health region.

METHODS:

A retrospective review of all hospital admissions for lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) in infants from the Northwest Territories and the Kitikmeot region of Nunavut between 2000 and 2004 was completed and admission rates were compared by health region.

RESULTS:

Hospital admission rates for LRTIs in infants were above the Canadian rate for all regions. The rate of hospital admission for LRTIs in infants from the Kitikmeot region of Nunavut was dramatically high at 590 hospital admissions/1000 live births in the first 12 months of life. The majority of hospitalized infants were previously healthy, non-breastfed term infants with no underlying disease.

INTERPRETATION:

The rate of hospital admission in the Kitikmeot region of Nunavut is the highest reported in the current literature. The reason for such significant morbidity is difficult to explain and raises the question of an underlying predisposition to severe disease in this infant population. The question warrants further study to gain a better understanding of risk factors as well as the role of prevention.  相似文献

BACKGROUND:

The hemodynamic perturbation related to patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is associated with a higher risk of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC).

OBJECTIVE:

To determine whether primary surgical closure, as compared with treatment with indomethacin or exposure to prophylactic indomethacin, reduces the incidence of NEC in preterm infants <1500 g and/or ≤32 weeks’ gestation with clinically and echocardiogram-identified PDA.

METHODS:

The literature was reviewed using the methodology for systematic reviews for the Consensus of Science adapted from the American Heart Association’s International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation.

RESULTS:

Ten studies were reviewed. The incidence of NEC was not lower in infants who underwent primary surgery for closure of the PDA compared with infants treated with indomethacin or infants exposed to prophylactic indomethacin (level of evidence 2).

CONCLUSION:

Primary surgical closure of the PDA cannot be recommended as an intervention to decrease the incidence of NEC in infants <1500 g and/or ≤32 weeks’ gestation.  相似文献

Background

Diminished lung function appears to be a risk factor for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection/bronchiolitis in term born infants.

Aims

To determine if diminished lung function prior to neonatal unit discharge was associated with subsequent symptomatic RSV lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) and respiratory morbidity in prematurely born infants.

Methods

Of 39 infants in a tertiary neonatal intensive care unit (median gestational age 28 weeks, range 23–31), 20 had bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Lung function (compliance and resistance of the respiratory system (Crs and Rrs) and functional residual capacity (FRC)) was measured on the neonatal unit at 36 weeks postmenstrual age (PMA). Following neonatal unit discharge, nasopharyngeal aspirates were obtained on every occasion, at home or in hospital, an infant had an LRTI. RSV was identified by immunofluorescence and/or culture.

Results

The 15 infants who suffered a symptomatic RSV LRTI had a higher mean Rrs and suffered more wheeze at follow up than the rest of the cohort. Regression analysis showed that a high Rrs was significantly associated with a symptomatic RSV LRTI; significant factors for cough were a high Rrs and a symptomatic RSV LRTI, and for wheeze were a high Rrs.

Conclusion

Prematurely born infants, who had a symptomatic RSV LRTI and/or respiratory morbidity at follow up, had worse lung function prior to neonatal unit discharge.  相似文献

BACKGROUND:

Invasive fungal infection is a significant cause of mortality and morbidity in preterm infants. Oral nonabsorbable agents are used prophylactically, but the literature regarding their effectiveness has not been systematically reviewed.

OBJECTIVE:

To determine if oral nonabsorbable antifungal prophylaxis reduces the incidence of fungal colonization and/or systemic infection in preterm infants.

METHODS:

The literature was reviewed using the methodology for systematic reviews for the Consensus on Resuscitation Science adapted from the American Heart Association’s International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation.

RESULTS:

Five studies were reviewed. Three level of evidence 1 studies and two level of evidence 3/4 studies provided evidence that the prophylactic use of oral nonabsorbable antifungal agents can reduce the incidence of fungal colonization and/or systemic fungal infection in preterm infants.

CONCLUSION:

Prophylactic oral nonabsorbable antifungal medications are an acceptable approach to reduce colonization and invasive fungal infection in preterm infants in units with high baseline colonization rates.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE:

To calculate the culture incubation required to determine bacteremia or meningitis in infants younger than three months of age hospitalized from the community following a full septic work-up for fever without focus.

DESIGN:

Retrospective chart review.

SETTING:

Large, urban, paediatric tertiary care hospital.

PATIENTS:

All previously healthy infants younger than three months of age with positive blood and/or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cultures admitted from the emergency department to the general paediatric and infectious disease wards from January 1990 to December 1996.

METHODS:

The charts of all patients with positive blood and CSF cultures (excluding coagulase-negative staphylococcus) were reviewed to determine the time at which the positive culture was identified. Organisms were considered pathogenic if a clinical decision was made to treat the organism with a therapeutic course of antibiotics.

RESULTS:

Of 1235 infants admitted, 5.5% were bacteremic and 1.9% had bacterial meningitis. In 34% of patients, the period between the arrival of the culture in the laboratory to the initial reporting of a positive result was greater than 24 h but less than 48 h, and in 2% of patients (treated as pathogens but likely contaminants) greater than 48 h. The most common organism cultured (in 31% of patients) was Escherichia coli.

CONCLUSIONS:

With the present culture technique, most, if not all, clinically significant positive blood and CSF results are reported by 48 h of culture incubation.  相似文献

BACKGROUND:

The birth prevalence of cerebral palsy varies over time among very preterm infants, and the reasons are poorly understood.

OBJECTIVE:

To describe the variation in the prevalence of cerebral palsy among very preterm infants over time, and to relate these differences to other maternal or neonatal factors.

METHODS:

A population-based cohort of very preterm infants was evaluated over a 20-year period (1988 to 2007) divided into four equal epochs.

RESULTS:

The prevalence of cerebral palsy peaked in the third epoch (1998 to 2002) while mortality rate peaked in the second epoch (1993 to 1997). Maternal anemia, tocolytic use and neonatal need for home oxygen were highest in the third epoch.

CONCLUSIONS:

Lower mortality rates did not correlate well with the prevalence of cerebral palsy. Maternal risk factors, anemia and tocolytic use, and the newborn need for home oxygen were highest during the same epoch as the peak prevalence of cerebral palsy.  相似文献

BACKGROUND

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) can result in significant morbidity in preterm infants. Light exposure has been suggested to be a contributing factor.

OBJECTIVE:

A systematic review was performed to determine whether reducing light exposure in the neonatal intensive care unit decreased the incidence of ROP in preterm infants.

METHODS:

The literature was reviewed using the methodology for systematic reviews recommended by the Consensus on Resuscitation Science, adapted from the American Heart Association’s International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation.

RESULTS:

Seven articles were reviewed. Six of the articles were neutral to the clinical question and one supported the clinical question. However, the latter study used retrospective controls and was conducted during the evolution of the classification system for ROP. There were no studies that opposed the clinical question.

CONCLUSION:

Decreasing ambient light exposure in neonatal intensive care units is not of benefit in reducing the incidence of ROP.  相似文献

Background:

Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is one of the most common causes of neonatal respiratory failure and mortality. The risk of developing RDS decreases with both increasing gestational age and birth weight.

Objectives:

The aim of this study was to evaluate the value of lung ultrasound in the diagnosis of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in newborn infants.

Materials and Methods:

From March 2012 to May 2013, 100 newborn infants were divided into two groups: RDS group (50 cases) and control group (50 cases). According to the findings of chest x-ray, there were 10 cases of grade II RDS, 15 grade III cases, and 25 grade IV cases in RDS group. Lung ultrasound was performed at bedside by a single expert. The ultrasound indexes observed in this study included pleural line, A-line, B-line, lung consolidation, air bronchograms, bilateral white lung, interstitial syndrome, lung sliding, lung pulse etc.

Results:

In all of the infants with RDS, lung ultrasound consistently showed generalized consolidation with air bronchograms, bilateral white lung or alveolar-interstitial syndrome, pleural line abnormalities, A-line disappearance, pleural effusion, lung pulse, etc. The simultaneous demonstration of lung consolidation, pleural line abnormalities and bilateral white lung, or lung consolidation, pleural line abnormalities and A-line disappearance co-exists with a sensitivity and specificity of 100%. Besides, the sensitivity was 80% and specificity 100% of lung pulse for the diagnosis of neonatal RDS.

Conclusions:

This study indicates that using an ultrasound to diagnose neonatal RDS is accurate and reliable too. A lung ultrasound has many advantages over other techniques. Ultrasound is non-ionizing, low-cost, easy to operate, and can be performed at bedside, making this technique ideal for use in NICU.  相似文献

Objectives

To monitor preterm infants in a cot and a car seat and compare an observed car seat trial with polysomnography (PSG).

Design

Non‐randomised controlled trial.

Setting

Regional neonatal unit.

Patients

Preterm infants before discharge.

Interventions

Nap PSG respiratory and sleep variables were measured including gastro‐oesophageal pH. Nurse observations included respiratory distress, apnoea measured by apnoea alarm, oxygen saturation and heart rate. Infants were studied supine in a cot and then in a car seat. Nursing observations were compared with PSG during the car seat trial only. Criteria for failure of the PSG and observed tests were predefined.

Main outcome measures

Difference in respiratory instability between cot and car seat. Concurrence regarding failure of the car seat trial between nurse‐observed data and PSG.

Results

20 infants (median gestation 33 weeks (range 28–35 weeks; median postmenstrual age (PMA) at study 36.5 weeks (range 35–38 weeks)) were studied. There were sufficient car seat data on 18 infants for comparison. There were fewer central apnoeas and arousals in the cot than the car seat (p = 0.047 and p = 0.024, respectively). Airway obstruction was not more common in the car seat. Younger PMA at time of study predicted failure in both car seat (p = 0.022) and cot (p = 0.022). The nurse‐observed test had low sensitivity for predicting PSG failure but more accurately predicted airway obstruction on PSG.

Conclusions

Immature infants exhibit respiratory instability in cots and car seats. A car seat test does not accurately detect all adverse events during sleep in the seat.Since concerns were first raised about the vulnerability of preterm infants during transportation,1,2 several studies have attempted to quantify the respiratory compromise experienced by these infants while in car seats.3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13 Many of these studies had methodological limitations as not all measured the sleep state, or used a supine position for comparison or airflow measures to detect obstructive apnoea, or allowed for differences in postmenstrual age (PMA) at study.Although car seat trial before discharge has been incorporated into many neonatal discharge practices it has not been universally accepted as the gold standard test for assessing risk of respiratory compromise in a car seat after discharge.14,15,16 Despite many neonatal nurseries implementing variations of the practice,14 criteria defining how premature infants should be monitored, how long to monitor or what constitutes failure of the test are lacking.15,17,18 Neonatal unit car seat testing programmes therefore vary in equipment type, quality, time and outcome data.14The present study aimed to examine respiratory variables during active and quiet sleep in preterm infants ready for discharge and compare variables recorded supine in a cot with those recorded supine in a car seat, in particular, to determine whether more obstructive events occurred after transfer to the car seat. A second aim was to compare car seat testing before discharge with concurrent polysomnography (PSG) recording to determine if a nurse‐observed test was a sensitive enough predictor of respiratory instability, and in particular airway obstruction, found on PSG.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES:

To estimate the prevalence of urinary tract infection in infants and children with bronchiolitis.

METHODS:

A retrospective cross-sectional study involving patients zero to 24 months of age who were hospitalized with acute bronchiolitis was conducted.

RESULTS:

A total of 835 paediatric patients with acute bronchiolitis were admitted to the paediatric ward between January 2010 and December 2012. The mean (± SD) age at diagnosis was 3.47±2.99 months. There were 325 (39%) girls and 510 (61%) boys. For the purpose of data analysis, the patient population was divided into three groups: group 1 included children hospitalized with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) bronchiolitis; group 2 included children hospitalized with clinical bronchiolitis with no virus detected; and group 3 included children hospitalized with clinical bronchiolitis due to a respiratory virus other than RSV. Results revealed that urinary tract infection was present in 10% of patients, and was most common in group 3 (13.4%) followed by group 2 (9.7%), and was least common in group 1 (6%) (P=0.030).

CONCLUSIONS:

The possibility of a urinary tract infection should be considered in a febrile child with a diagnosis of bronchiolitis, particularly if the trigger is a respiratory virus other than RSV.  相似文献

Aims

To examine the effect of the daily use of micronutrients (including zinc) or the same micronutrients plus heat inactivated lactic acid bacteria (LAB), on diarrhoea in children compared to placebo.

Methods

A triple blind randomised clinical trial in an urban slum of Karachi, Pakistan. Micronutrients (including zinc), micronutrients (including zinc and LAB), or placebo, were provided daily for two months to 75 young children (aged 6–12 months) identified at high risk for diarrhoea related mortality on the basis of history of at least one episode of diarrhoea in the preceding two weeks. The longitudinal prevalence of diarrhoea was defined as the percentage of days a child had diarrhoea out of the days the child was observed.

Results

Mean longitudinal prevalence of diarrhoea in the micronutrient–zinc group was 15% (SD = 10%) child‐days compared to 26% (SD = 20%) child‐days in the placebo group and 26% (SD = 19%) child‐days in the micronutrient–zinc–LAB group. The difference between the micronutrient–zinc–LAB and placebo groups was not significant.

Conclusion

The daily provision of micronutrients (including zinc) reduces the longitudinal prevalence of diarrhoea and thus may also reduce diarrhoea related mortality in young children; heat inactivated LAB has negative effects in these children.  相似文献

Background:

Premature infants, who have to spend the first week of their lives in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), experience pain and stress in numerous cases, and they are exposed to many invasive interventions. The studies have shown that uncontrolled pain experienced during early life has negative and long-term side effects, such as distress, and such experiences negatively affect the development of the central nervous system

Objectives:

The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of touching on infant pain perception and the effects of eutectic mixture of local anesthetic (EMLA) on the reduction of pain.

Patients and Methods:

Data for the study were collected between March and August 2012 from the neonatal clinic of a university hospital located in eastern Turkey. The population of the study consisted of premature infants who were undergoing treatment, completed the first month and who were approved for Hepatitis B vaccine. The study consisted of two experimental groups and one control group. Information forms, intervention follow-up forms, and Premature Infant Pain Profile (PIPP) were used to collect the data. EMLA cream was applied on the vastus lateralis muscles of the first experimental group before the vaccination. The second experimental group was vaccinated by imitation (placebo), without a needle tip or medicine. Vaccination was carried out using instrumental touch in this group. A routine vaccination was applied in the control group.

Results:

Mean pain scores of the group to which EMLA was applied were lower in a statistically significant way (P < 0.05) compared to the pain scores of the other groups. Moreover, it was determined that even though invasive intervention was not applied to the newborns, the touching caused them to feel pain just as in the placebo group (P < 0.005).

Conclusions:

The results demonstrated that EMLA was an effective method for reducing pain in premature newborns, and the use of instrumental touch for invasive intervention stimulated the pain perception in the newborns.  相似文献

Background:

Functional abdominal pain (FAP) is one of the most common diseases, and large percentages of children suffer from it.

Objectives:

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect of Lactobacillus reuteri in treatment of children with functional abdominal pain.

Patients and Methods:

This study was a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial. Children aged 4 to 16 years with chronic functional abdominal pain (based on Rome III criteria) were enrolled in the study. They were randomly divided into two groups, one receiving probiotic and the other placebo.

Results:

Forty children received probiotic and forty others placebo. There were no significant differences in age, weight, sex, location of pain, associated symptoms, frequency and intensity of pain between the groups. The severity and frequency of abdominal pain in the first month compared to baseline was significantly less and at the end of the second month, there was no significant difference between both groups compared to the end of the first month.

Conclusions:

This study showed that the severity of pain was significantly reduced in both groups. There was no significant difference in pain scores between them. The effect of probiotic and placebo can probably be attributed to psychological effect of the drugs.  相似文献
