While female sex workers (FSWs) carry one of the highest risks of HIV transmission, little is known about predictors of HIV and risky behavior of FSWs in Ukraine. In this study of 4806 Ukrainian FSWs, the prevalence of HIV was 5.6 %. FSWs had higher odds to be HIV infected if they had lower income, were older, injected drugs, experienced violence, and solicited clients on highways. Inconsistent condom use with clients was reported by 34.5 % of FSWs. FSWs who solicited clients at railway stations, via media, through previous clients and other FSWs, and on highways reported lower consistency of condom use. Furthermore, inconsistent condom use was related to younger age, alcohol use, having fewer clients, not being covered with HIV prevention, and experiences of violence. The present study expands on the rather limited knowledge of correlates of the HIV and inconsistent condom use among FSWs in Ukraine. 相似文献

Different risks of HIV infection have been reported among different types of male sex workers (MSW). In order to compare the prevalence of HIV infection and related risk behaviors of MSW in different venues in Shenzhen, China, a time-location sampling survey was conducted in 2008. 5.1% of the 394 MSWs were tested positive for HIV, with 6.9% in those working in parks (PMSW), 11.3% in small family clubs (FMSW) and 1.7% in entertainment venues. PMSWs and FMSWs reported a higher proportion of self-identified homosexual/gay. Moreover, FMSWs reported a lower coverage of HIV-related education and services and were more likely to self-report coming from provinces with higher HIV prevalence. The results indicated that MSWs in small venues and parks were comparatively at higher risk of being infected and suggested that current HIV preventive intervention needs to be expanded to the small venues in Shenzhen. 相似文献

Self-reported condom use may be prone to social desirability bias. Our aim was to assess the validity of self-reported condom use in a population of female sex workers using prostate specific antigen (PSA) as a gold standard biomarker of recent unprotected vaginal intercourse. We collected data on 223 sex-workers in Conakry, Guinea in order to assess the sensitivity and specificity of self-reported condom use as well as to examine the predictors of discordance between self-report and PSA presence. PSA was detected in 38.4% of samples. Sensitivity of self-reported condom use was 14.6% and its specificity was 94.7%. Self-perceived high risk of HIV infection was the only significant independent predictor of misreported condom use. PSA could be useful to validate self-reported condom use in surveys and to allow a better understanding of factors associated with social desirability in sexual behaviour reporting. 相似文献

We examined condom-use negotiation strategies and condom use among 81 female sex workers (FSWs) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Percentages of FSWs who did not negotiate condom use or could not describe a negotiation strategy with native clients, foreign clients, and non-paying partners were 15.0, 29.0 and 67.6 %, respectively. The most common negotiation strategy used was “provision of risk information” for native clients (43.8 %) and non-paying partners (26.5 %), and “direct request” for foreign clients (39.5 %). About half could not describe more than one negotiation strategy. Consistent condom use was high with native clients (98.8 %), yet comparatively lower with foreign clients (86.9 %) and non-paying partners (26.5 %). FSWs who did not negotiate or did not know how to negotiate condom use were less likely to report condom use with non-paying regular partners. Future interventions should enhance condom negotiation strategies between FSWs and all partner types. 相似文献

Knowledge of female sex workers’ (FSW) condom use behaviors in Vietnam is important for predicting the epidemic and designing interventions. Four hundred FSWs in Hanoi were studied in 2002. Consistent condom use in the past month was higher with irregular clients (62%), less with regular clients (41%), and lowest with “love mates” (5%). Reasons for not using condoms were partner objection, condom unavailability, and belief of partner's disease-free status. Twenty-seven percent reported not always having a condom available. Thirty-five percent reported increasing condom use in the previous 6 months. Reluctance to ask clients to use condoms and condom unavailability were independently associated with inconsistent condom use with both irregular and regular clients. Older age was also associated with inconsistent condom use with irregular clients. Condom promotion should focus on FSWs and their partners. Negative attitudes toward FSWs and condom promotion need to be changed to reduce stigmatization of FSWs and to make condom use a norm in the society. 相似文献

There has been little theory-based research focusing on condom use among male clients of female sex workers (CFSW) in China. The current study applied social cognitive theory to condom use behaviors of CFSW in China. Face-to-face structured interviews were conducted among 584 CFSW recruited through snowball sampling. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression models were applied to examine factors associated with consistent condom use. A minority (30.65 %) of respondents reported using condoms consistently with FSW, and 7 of 12 social cognitive dimensions/subdimensions were found to be significantly influential. The most significant factors were self-efficacy [adjusted prevalence ratio (APR) = 2.11, 95 %, CI = 1.74–2.43] and personal pleasure reduction (APR = 0.3, 95 % CI = 0.15–0.6). HIV-related knowledge, perceived HIV susceptibility, condom cost, condom efficacy, and embarrassment of carrying condoms were not associated with consistent condom uses with FSW. Findings from the current study suggest future prevention programs should target sex venues, and condom access should ensure both quantity and quality. Peer education should focus on knowledge education and peer norms, and knowledge education should include information on HIV infection severity and how to increase pleasure with condom use. 相似文献

Little is known about sex work in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, despite rapid increases in HIV infection. Consistent client condom
use and prior HIV testing are described among 448 female sex workers (FSW) completing a self-administered questionnaire, health
provider interview, and HIV testing between April 2003 and March 2004. Participants were recruited through outreach workers
using modified snowball sampling. Consistent client condom use was more likely for FSW who were married, knew condoms prevent
HIV, and from countries in south Central Asia. Prior HIV testing was less likely for FSW younger than 21 years, who shared
drugs with clients, initiated sex work at 18 years or less and had engaged in sex work less than 2 years. Low rates of condom
use, particularly by those with risky drug behaviors, indicate that targeted risk-reduction interventions are urgently needed. 相似文献

This study examines the effects of a multi-level social action-based theory (SABT) intervention to increase HIV testing and
consistent condom use among female commercial sex workers (FCSWs). Respondents in four socio-demographically similar Philippine
cities received an SABT intervention based on: (1) peer influence; (2) manager training; (3) combined peer/manager influence;
or (4) usual care (control condition). HIV testing increased 86% from baseline (N = 980) to follow-up (N = 903), and was significantly associated with higher HIV/AIDS knowledge, lower probability of contracting HIV and increased
condom use. After adjusting for socio-demographic, HIV knowledge and perceived control variables, FCSWs in the manager training
and combined peer/manager conditions were significantly more likely to engage in consistent condom use. Mediational analyses
revealed higher HIV/AIDS risk perceptions and a supportive work environment related to increased condom use. These findings
support a growing body of research suggesting the need for multi-level sexual risk reduction interventions among FCSWs. 相似文献

This study assesses the impact of personal and situational influences on condom use among establishment-based commercial sex workers (CSWs) in the Philippines. Prior research employing bivariate and multivariate statistics for item-level analyses identified situational factors as more important than personal factors on condom use among the CSWs. In the current study, multilevel latent variable structural equation models analyzed at the establishment and individual levels examined the influences of constructs encompassing both personal and situational factors on condom use. The between-level analyses revealed significant direct relationships between managers' attitudes (both actual and as perceived by the CSWs) and AIDS education and condom efficacy/use, confirming the presence of social, situational influences. The within-clusters analyses further revealed a predictive relationship between CSWs' perceptions of manager attitudes, personal condom attitudes, self-esteem, and condom efficacy/use. The discussion focuses on the relative influence of personal and situational factors on CSW condom use and the importance of addressing issues related to both factors in the development of effective interventions to promote safer sexual behavior among commercial sex workers. 相似文献

To describe the epidemiology of HIV and syphilis infection and sexual practices among male sex workers, we studied 434 transvestites and 96 hustlers recruited by peers in the metropolitan area of São Paulo, Brazil, from 1992 to 1998. Participants were young adults with low education levels who had recently immigrated to São Paulo and supported themselves primarily through sex work. The prevalence of HIV infection among transvestites and hustlers was 40% and 22% respectively, and the prevalence of current or past syphilis was 43% and 27%, respectively. Infection was associated more with gender performance and duration of sex work than to recent unsafe sexual practices or recent condom use. As opposed to hustlers, whose clients came primarily from São Paulo and were homosexual, transvestites were more likely to have foreign and heterosexual clients. HIV and syphilis among sex workers are urgent public health problems that require continuous prevention programs for male sex workers and their clients. 相似文献

In 2009–2010, females who reported having vaginal, anal or oral sex in exchange for money in the previous year, ≥16 years, and living in either Chisinau (n = 299) or Balti (n = 359), Moldova, were recruited into a respondent driven sampling survey. One fifth reported ever injecting drugs and over 30 % ever had sexual intercourse with men who inject drugs. In both cities, condom use with permanent and casual partners was much lower than condom use with commercial partners. In Chisinau, 6.9 % and in Balti, 24.7 % tested positive for HIV; 18 and 23.7 % had antibodies to hepatitis C; 9.1 and 8.9 % had antibodies to HBV; and, 8.4 and 6.1 % tested positive for syphilis. HIV seropositive FSW in either city were more likely to have ever injected drugs and to be infected with HCV. Limited government initiative and drastic reductions in international funding will likely impact urgently needed HIV prevention and harm reduction services targeting FSW in Moldova. 相似文献

Male sex workers serving Hong Kong male clients in Shenzhen were surveyed (n = 199); 98.9% had been in Shenzhen for ≤3 years; 83.4% served local male clients; 82.8% had no family members/relatives in
Shenzhen; 58.3% depended exclusively on sex work; 73% were bothered by one’s sex work; and 81.7% found financial support unavailable
when needed. About 29.1% had had unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) with Hong Kong male clients in the last month. UAI behavior
was associated with exposure to HIV prevention services (OR = 0.08) and poor social support, being bothered by the sex work,
substance use, and type of sex work venue (OR = 2.92–5.96). 相似文献

Tijuana is situated on Mexico’s northern border with the U.S., where sex work is quasi-legal. Whereas previous work has focused on the risk behaviors of female sex workers (FSWs), less is known about the risk behaviors of their male clients. Further, research has not examined structural factors as moderators of the association between substance use and condom use, including the contexts in which sex takes place. The purpose of the current study is to examine whether having sex with FSWs in a bar moderates the link between alcohol intoxication during sex and condom use. We recruited 375 male clients of FSWs in Tijuana, Mexico from San Diego, California and Tijuana. Using computer assisted interviewing, we surveyed participants on their alcohol use, condom use, and physical contexts of sex with FSWs in the past 4 months. Results showed that more frequent intoxication during sex with FSWs is associated with more unprotected sex, but only among clients having sex with FSWs in a bar context. Results point to potential reasons for inconsistent condom use with FSWs in this context, including lower risk perceptions of sex with FSWs in bars. Future research should examine structural factors that underlie clients’ risk behavior in bars in order to inform structural-level HIV prevention interventions. 相似文献

Some male sex workers (MSWs) are also engaging in a significant amount of illicit drug use and other high risk behavior. The purpose of this study was to examine demographic characteristics, HIV risk behaviors, and sex partner characteristics in a sample of MSW. Data were collected from 179 men who were trading sex for money in Houston, TX. In the past 30 days they reported an average of 56 male partners and 5 female partners. Of the 179 men, 152 had been tested for HIV and knew their status. Twenty-six percent of those tested had tested positive. 相似文献

Female sex workers (FSWs) living with HIV are a vulnerable population for multiple health concerns and have been vastly understudied in public health literature. This study analyzes factors related to pregnancy among 268 FSWs living with HIV in the Dominican Republic. Results indicate that 34 % of participants had been pregnant since HIV diagnosis. Multivariate analysis revealed significant associations between pregnancy after HIV diagnosis and ART interruption (AOR 2.41; 95 % CI 1.19, 4.94), knowledge of mother-to-child transmission (AOR 2.12; 95 % CI 0.99, 4.55), serostatus disclosure to a sex partner (AOR 2.46; 95 % CI 1.31, 4.62), older age (AOR 0.91; 95 % CI 0.87, 0.95) and a more negative perception of their health provider (AOR 0.56; 95 % CI 0.34, 0.93). Results indicate noteworthy associations between having been pregnant and the health provider experience and ART interruption, indicating a significant need for further research on this population to ensure both maternal and child health. 相似文献

There is little data on the burden of HIV and other infections that affect male sex workers (MSW) in Vietnam. We conducted behavioral and biological sexual health surveys with 300 MSW in Ho Chi Minh City. Generalized estimating equation models were built to assess factors associated with HIV, hepatitis C, and other sexually transmitted infections (STI). Of 300 MSW, 19 (6.3 %) were diagnosed seropositive for HIV, 11 (3.7 %) had hepatitis C, and 26 (8.7 %) had at least one prevalent STI. In a multivariable model, opiate use was significantly associated with HIV infection (aOR 6.46, 95 % CI 1.28–32.7) and hepatitis C (aOR = 19.6, 95 % CI 2.35–163.6). Alcohol dependency was associated with increased odds of hepatitis C (aOR = 4.79, 95 % CI 1.02–22.5) and decreased odds of other STI (aOR = 0.30, 95 % CI 0.10–0.97). These findings suggest that MSW in Vietnam would benefit from regular HIV and STI testing, as well as linkage to care and substance use rehabilitation services. 相似文献

Factors Associated with HIV Testing,Condom Use,and Sexually Transmitted Infections Among Female Sex Workers in Nha Trang,Vietnam 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study examined predictors of HIV testing, successful condom negotiation with clients, and self-reported sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among Vietnamese female sex workers (FSW). Data were collected by using face-to-face interviews from a community sample of 610 FSW from Nha Trang city during October–December, 2000. Having had an HIV test was associated with having spent time in a rehabilitation center. Consistently successful negotiation of condom use occurred most among FSW who had few clients, understood how HIV was not transmitted, and had not reported ever having any symptoms of STIs. Migration to Nha Trang for sex work was a risk factor for an STI diagnosis; successful negotiation of condom use had a protective effect. Our results suggest the need for voluntary HIV counseling and testing, further promotion of condom use among FSW populations, and better use of rehabilitation sites to promote HIV prevention. 相似文献

Two hundred and seventy-seven drug using adults were interviewed regarding details of their most recent sexual encounter. Demographic, attitudinal, and context variables were associated with condom use and non-use. Greater perceived risk of STDs/HIV and positive attitudes toward condoms' effect on sexual pleasure were associated with greater likelihood of reporting condom use. Common reasons for not using condoms included lower perceived risk of contracting HIV/STDs, negative attitudes toward condoms' effect on pleasure, and lack of condom availability. Tailoring messages to modifiable perceptions of risk and condom attitudes may be useful in reducing sexual risk among drug-using individuals. 相似文献
