The life of a bill: a nursing experience

In an effort to better understand the process of health policy to advocate for increased legislative support for the nurse practitioner (NP) role, the authors attended the Nurse in Washington Internship (NIWI) sponsored by the Nursing Organizations Alliance from March 14-16, 2010. The restrictions on NP practice must be removed if we are to meet the health care needs of the populace. This article is a condensed discussion of the process of health policy.     

The nursing portfolio: a reflection of a professional

A nursing portfolio is a means of documenting skills such as communication, creativity, and critical thinking. More important, it reflects professional development, self-evaluation, and achievement of goals. Designing and implementing a portfolio enables traditional nursing students and RNs returning to school to describe their achievements during a specified period of time. For the adult student seeking scholastic or clinical credit for past work or life experiences, the portfolio provides a creative and structured way for this to be obtained without taking a standardized test.     

Visiting the USSR: a trip of a lifetime

To Russia, who me? That is actually how it all began. A decade or more ago, I had the opportunity to visit what was then known as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), Russia. Although, this place held high priority on my list of places to go, I never thought such a trip was within my reach. This idea was quite fascinating to me because of the events that did happen there, including the Russian space ship Sputnik and the dog, the high stepping military officers, Red Square and the St. Basil's Cathedral. After reading a lot about Russia, I thought it would be great to see a clean place, where it was unlawful to throw paper on the streets, and ride in public transportation such as the buses, taxis and the subway system, which were immaculately clean. It was an exciting trip, one, I will always remember, but would be a difficult adjustment to make, to live.     

Norepinephrine: more of a neurohormone than a vasopressor

Septic shock causes unpredictable cardiovascular responses through adrenoreceptor-mediated changes in cardiac function and vascular responsiveness. The use of norepinephrine should be regarded as neurohormonal augmentation therapy to defend decompensating haemodynamic function rather than as a rescue therapy to treat shock. Recent trials represent a perceptible change in clinical practice to preferentially use norepinephrine early in resuscitation to defend the mean arterial pressure and to use norepinephrine as a neurohormone rather than as a vasopressor.
