OBJECTIVES: (a) To investigate the effects of reduced training on physical condition and performance in well trained cyclists; (b) to study whether an intermittent exercise programme would maintain physiological training adaptations more effectively than a continuous exercise programme during a period of reduced training. METHODS: Twelve male cyclists participated in a 21 day training programme and were divided into two training groups. One group (age 25.3 (7) years; weight 73.3 (5.7) kg; VO(2)MAX 58.6 (4.5) ml/kg/min; means (SD)) underwent a continuous endurance exercise training programme (CT) whereas the second group (age 22.8 (3.5) years; weight 74.1 (7.0) kg; VO(2)MAX 59.7 (6.7) ml/kg/min) followed an intermittent endurance exercise training programme (IT). During this reduced training period, both groups trained for two hours a day, three days a week. RESULTS: Neither group showed changes in maximal workload (WMAX) (4.6 (0.5) v 4.8 (0.5) W/kg and 4.6 (0.5) v 4.7 (0.6) W/kg for the CT and IT group respectively) and VO(2)MAX (58.6 (4.5) v 60.1 (5.8) ml/kg/min and 59.7 (6.7) v 58.8 (7.5) ml/kg/min for the CT and IT group respectively). During the submaximal steady state exercise test, substrate use and heart rate remained unchanged after reduced training. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that well trained cyclists who reduce training intensity and volume for 21 days can maintain physiological adaptations, as measured during submaximal and maximal exercise. An intermittent training regimen has no advantage over a continuous training regimen during a detraining period.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of a relatively high- versus moderate-volume resistance training program on changes in lean mass during caloric restriction. Thirty-eight resistance-trained males were randomized to perform either a high-volume (HVG; 5 sets/exercise) or a moderate-volume (MVG; 3 sets/exercise) resistance training program. Both groups were supervised during lower body training. Participants consumed 30 kcal/kg for 6 weeks after 1 week of weight maintenance (45 kcal/kg), with protein intake fixed at 2.8 g/kg fat-free mass. Muscle thickness of the m. rectus femoris, body composition, contractile properties, stiffness, mood, and sleep status were assessed at pre-, mid-, and post-study. No significant group × time interaction was observed for muscle thickness of the m. rectus femoris at 50% (∆ [post-pre] 0.36 ± 0.93 mm vs. ∆ −0.01 ± 1.59 mm; p = 0.226) and 75% length (∆ −0.32 ± 1.12 mm vs. ∆ 0.08 ± 1.14 mm; p = 0.151), contractility, sleep, and mood in the HVG and MVG, respectively. Body mass (HVG: ∆ −1.69 ± 1.12 kg vs. MVG: ∆ −1.76 ± 1.76 kg) and lean mass (∆ −0.51 ± 2.30 kg vs. ∆ −0.92 ± 1.59 kg) decreased significantly in both groups (p = 0.022), with no between-group difference detected (p = 0.966). High-volume resistance training appears to have neither an advantage nor disadvantage over moderate-volume resistance training in terms of maintaining lean mass or muscle thickness. Given that both groups increased volume load and maintained muscle contractility, sleep quality, and mood, either moderate or higher training volumes conceivably can be employed by resistance-trained individuals to preserve muscle during periods of moderate caloric restriction.  相似文献

Anti-leukotriene therapy represents a new principle in asthma treatment. As elite athletes can have asthma, this double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomised cross-over study investigated the effect of 10 mg oral montelukast, a specific and potent cysteinyl leukotriene receptor antagonist, on physiological responses to submaximal and maximal aerobic exercise at -15 degrees C in 14 non-asthmatic highly trained endurance male athletes (maximal oxygen uptake [VO2 max] > 70 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1)). Heart rate, capillary blood lactate, minute ventilation with tidal volume and breathing frequency, respiratory exchange ratio and oxygen uptake were measured during the warm-up run of 10 min at 50%, runs of 10 min at 90% and 5 min at 80% VO2max, and a timed run to exhaustion. Spirometry was performed at baseline, at four hours after tablet ingestion, after warm-up and exercise at 80% VO2max, and in the post exercise period. Compared to placebo, montelukast did not increase baseline FEV1, have a beneficial effect on physiological performance variables, or increase the mean (SD) running time to exhaustion (montelukast: 332.3 [45.8] s, placebo: 340.1 [53.3] s, P = 0.22). These findings do not suggest the need for disallowing the use of this drug by asthmatic athletes.  相似文献

Rapid body mass loss (RBML) before competition was found to decrease hemoglobin mass (Hbmass) in elite boxers. This study aimed to investigate the underlying mechanisms of this observation. Fourteen well‐trained combat athletes who reduced body mass before competitions (weight loss group, WLG) and 14 combat athletes who did not practice RBML (control group, CON) were tested during an ordinary training period (t‐1), 1–2 days before an official competition (after 5–7 days RBML in WLG, t‐2), and after a post‐competition period (t‐3). In WLG, body mass (?5.5%, range: 2.9–6.8 kg) and Hbmass (?4.1%) were significantly (P < 0.001) reduced after RBML and were still decreased by 1.6% (P < 0.05) and 2.6% (P < 0.001) at t‐3 compared with t‐1. After RBML, erythropoietin, reticulocytes, haptoglobin, triiodothyronine (FT3), and free androgen index (FAI) were decreased compared with t‐1 and t‐3. An increase occurred in ferritin and bilirubin. Peak treadmill‐running performance and VO2peak did not change significantly, but performance at 4‐mmol lactate threshold was higher after RBML (P < 0.05). In CON, no significant changes were found in any parameter. Apparently, the significant decrease in Hbmass after RBML in combat athletes was caused by impaired erythropoiesis and increased hemolysis without significant impact on aerobic performance capacity.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the chronic effects of nitrate (NO3?) ingestion over three days, on 40 km TT performance in 11trained cyclists (VO2max: 60.8 ± 7.4 ml.kg?1.min?1; age: 36 ± 9 years; height: 1.80 ± 0.06 m; body mass: 87.2 ± 12.0 kg). Utilising a double-blind randomised cross-over design, participants completed three 40 km TT on a Velotron® ergometer following the ingestion of either a 140 ml of “BEET It sport®” NO3? shot containing 12.8 mmol or 800 mg of NO3?, a placebo drink or nothing (control). Performance, oxygen consumption (VO2), blood bicarbonate (HCO3-), pH and lactate (BLa) and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) were measured every 10 km throughout the TT. The present findings show that NO3? ingestion had no effect on TT performance (NO3?: 4098.0 ± 209.8 vs. Placebo: 4161.9 ± 263.3 s, p = 0.296, ES = 0.11), or VO2 (p = 0.253, ES = 0.13). Similarly, blood lactate and RPE were also unaffected by the experimental conditions (p = 0.522, ES = 0.06; p = 0.085, ES = 0.30) respectively. Therefore, these results suggest that a high dose of NO3? over three days has limited efficacy as an ergogenic aid for 40 km TT cycling performance in trained cyclists.  相似文献

The role of respiratory muscle fatigue in limiting exercise performance in well-trained subjects is still controversial, especially as far as relatively short runs are concerned. To determine the occurrence of respiratory muscle impairment, we studied six well-trained athletes before, during (middle of the run) and after a 17 km run. They were all asked to produce the maximum effort they could during the race. Strength was assessed by measuring maximal inspiratory mouth pressure against close airways (MIP), dynamic lung volumes were monitored using a spirometer. No changes in forced vital capacity (FVC), maximal expiratory flow (PEF) and forced expiratory volume in 1 sec (FEV1) were observed throughout the experiment. This suggested that functional residual capacity and subsequently the initial length of respiratory muscle were unchanged. Respiratory muscle strength did not significantly vary at the different time of measurements (154.8 +/- 20.9 cm H2O at the beginning, 157.5 +/- 23.7 cm H2O after 7.5 km, 155.8 +/- 22.5 cm H2O at the end and 152.3 +/- 17.6 cm H2O after 30 min of recovery). We therefore conclude that respiratory muscle fatigue does not impair the exercise performance of well-trained athletes in a relatively short race. The difference between these results and others reported in literature, could be explained by the different degree of training of the subjects performing the race.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to compare the effects of two high-intensity interval training (HIT) programmes on maximal oxygen uptake (.VO(2max)), the lactate threshold (LT) and 3000 m running performance in moderately trained male runners. .VO(2max), the running speed associated with .VO(2max) (V.VO(2max)), the time for which V.VO(2max) can be maintained (T(max)), the running speed at LT (v(LT)) and 3000 m running time (3000 mTT) were determined before and following three different training programmes performed for 10 weeks. Following the pre-test, 17 moderately trained male runners (V O(2max)=51.6+/-2.7ml kg(-1)min(-1)) were divided into training groups based on their 3000 mTT (Group 1, G(1), N=6, 8 x 60% of T(max) at V.VO(2max), 1:1 work:recovery ratio; Group 2, G(2), N=6, 12 x 30s at 130% V.VO(2max), 4.5 min recovery; control group, G(CON), N=5, 60 min at 75% V.VO(2max)). G(1) and G(2) performed two HIT sessions and two 60 min recovery run sessions (75% V.VO(2max)) each week. Control subjects performed four 60 min recovery run sessions (75% V.VO(2max)) each week. In G(1), significant improvements (p<0.05) following HIT were found in .VO(2max) (+9.1%), V.VO(2max) (+6.4%), T(max) (5%), v(LT) (+11.7%) and 3000 mTT (-7.3%). In G(2), significant improvements (p<0.05) following HIT were found in .VO(2max) (+6.2%), V.VO(2max)(+7.8%), T(max) (+32%) and 3000 mTT (-3.4%), but not in v(LT) (+4.7%; p=0.07). No significant changes in these variables were found in G(CON). The present study has shown that 3000 m running performance, .VO(2max), V.VO(2max), T(max) and v(LT) can be significantly enhanced using different HIT programmes in moderately trained runners, but that changes in performance and physiological variables may be more profound using prolonged HIT at intensities of V.VO(2max) with interval durations of 60% T(max).  相似文献

INTRODUCTION/PURPOSE: Hyperpnea and hyperinflation have been proposed as contributors to exaggerated energy demands in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), yet there are incomplete data on exercise requirements. This study compared total-body energy demands of the internal (unloaded) and external work of cycling and delta mechanical efficiency in 40 patients (FEV1: 36+/-14% predicted) with COPD and 28 healthy age-matched controls while characterizing dynamic hyperinflation. METHODS: Steady-state V O2 was obtained at rest, during unloaded and 20-W cycling, and at 20, 50, and 65% peak cycling power. Delta mechanical efficiency was calculated between constant-load cycling at 65 and 20% peak power. Dynamic hyperinflation was assessed from inspiratory capacity maneuvers. RESULTS: Oxygen demands (L.min) at rest, for internal work (0.47+/-0.14 vs 0.45+/-0.11) or external work at 20 W (0.62+/-0.20 vs 0.57+/-0.13), were not different between patients and controls, although ventilation was elevated in COPD. Cycling at 65% of peak power induced dynamic hyperinflation in COPD, which indices were not related to cycling efficiency. Delta efficiency (%) was not different between patients (26.3+/-8.1) and controls (24.8+/-4.0). CONCLUSION: Findings suggest that bioenergetics of submaximal cycling is not compromised in moderately severe COPD despite tachypnea and dynamic hyperinflation.  相似文献

PURPOSE: The objectives of this study were twofold: 1) to determine the effect of incremental exercise to volitional fatigue on plasma levels of lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde) in heart transplant recipients (HRT) and 2) to examine blood antioxidant capacity in HTR by assessment of antioxidant enzyme activities and vitamin E levels. METHODS: Seven endurance-trained HTR (mean +/- SD; age 39.7 +/- 12.8 yr) and seven endurance-trained healthy, age-matched control subjects (HC) (mean age 40.6 +/- 10.7 yr) performed a symptom-limited incremental exercise test on a cycle ergometer. Venous blood samples were obtained at rest, exercise, and during recovery and analyzed for plasma levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) as well as markers of blood antioxidant capacity. After exercise and during recovery, all dependent measures were corrected for plasma volume changes induced by exercise. Significance was established at (P < 0.05). RESULTS: No group differences existed in plasma levels of MDA at rest. Further, graded exercise did not alter plasma levels of MDA in either group. Resting erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase (GPX) activity was significantly lower and erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was higher in HTR compared with HC. Finally, at rest, no group differences existed in plasma GPX activity or vitamin E levels. CONCLUSIONS: Graded exercise to fatigue does not promote an increase in oxidative stress in blood of exercise trained HTR. Therefore, physical exercise does not appear to pose an oxidative-stress risk for these patients.  相似文献

Seven highly trained female cyclists (age 22 +/- 5 yr, height 165 +/- 6 cm, weight 60 +/- 5 kg, VO2max 55 +/- 6 ml.min-1.kg-1, mean +/- SD) consumed, for 1 wk each, isocaloric diets containing varying levels of carbohydrate, protein, and fat designated as low carbohydrate (LCHO), moderate carbohydrate (MCHO), and high carbohydrate (HCHO). Diets were administered in random order, and each subject consumed all three diet treatments. At the end of each weekly diet treatment, subjects rode on a cycle ergometer at 80% VO2max until fatigued. Cyclists continued light training during the diet treatments. Following each diet treatment and immediately prior to the fatiguing cycle ergometer ride, cyclists completed a Profile of Mood States (POMS) questionnaire. The POMS yields measures of tension (T), depression (D), anger (A), vigor (V), fatigue (F), and confusion (C), as well as providing a total mood score (TMS). Results indicated that subjects on LCHO had significantly (P less than or equal to 0.05) greater T, D, A, and TMS and less V compared with MCHO and HCHO. There were no significant differences between MCHO and HCHO. In the present study, LCHO in conjunction with training and exercise adversely affected the mood state of trained female cyclists as compared with MCHO and HCHO diets.  相似文献

Introduction

Fluoro-deoxy-glucose (FDG) can be used to visualize inflammation in atherosclerotic plaques in coronary arteries, if myocardial FDG uptake is adequately suppressed. Prolonged fasting for suppressing myocardial FDG uptake is inconsistent. We evaluated the feasibility to consistently suppress myocardial FDG uptake with a low carbohydrate high fat protein permitted (LCHFPP) diet.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of respiratory muscle endurance training (RMET) on ventilatory and endurance performance among moderately trained, male cyclists. Nine subjects initially completed two cycling VO2 max tests, two endurance cycling tests for time at 95% VO2 max, a 15-s MVV test, and an endurance breathing test for time at 100% MVV. Four subjects then underwent 3 weeks of strenuous RMET while five served as controls. Mean posttest 15-s MVV and endurance breathing time were significantly higher in the RMET group (243 +/- 14 l X min-1 and 804 +/- 94 s) than in the control group (205 +/- 6 l X min-1 and 48 +/- 8 s). No significant group differences in VO2 max or endurance cycling time at 95% VO2 max were observed following RMET. Results of this exploratory study indicated that RMET improved ventilatory power and endurance, but did not alter VO2 max or endurance cycling performance among moderately trained, male cyclists.  相似文献

Traditionally, high-carbohydrate diets have been recommended for endurance and ultra-endurance athletes. For many endurance events, the habitual consumption of a high-carbohydrate diet, with supplemental carbohydrate before and during exercise, is appropriate for many athletes. However, there are some situations for which alternative dietary options are beneficial. Diets relatively higher in fat than is currently recommended may be beneficial for exercise in which energy expenditure is high and time for recovery is limited, and for events in which athletes transport their food supply. The number of grueling events that challenge the limits of human endurance is increasing. Such events are also challenging the limits of current dietary recommendations, which may need to be expanded to allow for easier consumption of sufficient calories to minimize loss of lean body mass. The choice of diet for optimal physical performance depends on several factors, including type and duration of exercise, total energy expenditure, time for recovery, dietary preference of the athlete, and whether or not the sporting event is unassisted (and hence athletes are required to transport their food). A variety of diets ranging in macronutrient composition may be recommended based on these parameters.  相似文献

PURPOSE: Oral creatine supplementation is widely used in sportsmen and women. Side effects have been postulated, but no thorough investigations have been conducted to support these assertions. It is important to know whether long-term oral creatine supplementation has any detrimental effects on kidney function in healthy population. METHODS: Creatinine, urea, and plasma albumin clearances have been determined in oral creatine consumers (10 months to 5 yr) and in a control group. RESULTS: There were no statistical differences between the control group and the creatine consumer group for plasma contents and urine excretion rates for creatinine, urea, and albumin. Clearance of these compounds did not differ between the two groups. Thus, glomerular filtration rate, tubular reabsorption, and glomerular membrane permeability were normal in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Neither short-term, medium-term, nor long-term oral creatine supplements induce detrimental effects on the kidney of healthy individuals.  相似文献

We have previously demonstrated that females oxidize more lipid and less protein and carbohydrate during endurance exercise [21]. Several studies in male rats have demonstrated similar metabolic changes after 4 d of 17-beta-estradiol (E2) administration. Our purpose was to study the effects of E2 administration upon substrate metabolism during 90min of cycle ergometry at 60% VO2peak in 11 healthy, young males. E2 was administered in a single-blind, cross-over, randomized fashion for 11 d (100 microg.d(-1) x 3.5d --> 200 microg.d(-1) x 3.5 d --> 300 microg.d(-1) x 4.0 d). Respiratory exchange ratio (RER), VO2, Ve, HR, lactate, and glucose were measured every 30 min during exercise and E2, testosterone TEST, glycerol and triglycerides were measured prior to exercise T = 0 min. Muscle biopsies were taken from the vastus lateralis before and after exercise for glycogen determination. Estradiol treatment resulted in lower plasma TEST (20.8-->7.8 nmol.L(-1), P<0.0001) and higher plasma E2 (168.1 327.3 pmol.L(-1), P < 0.002). Therewere no effects of E2 treatment upon any of the other measured variables including muscle glycogen: (E2 - PRE = 529.3 --> POST = 237.9; PL-PRE = 582.2 --> POST = 262.4 mmol.kg(-1) [dm]). We concluded that short-term E2 treatment increased plasma E2 to female follicular levels in males but had no effect upon lipid or carbohydrate metabolism.  相似文献

Mood state and running economy in moderately trained male runners   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between psychological states as measured by the Profile of Mood States (POMS) inventory and within-subject variation in running economy (RE) in moderately trained male runners (N = 10). Subjects (ages 20-34 yr) were monitored during treadmill running, five times a week (Monday through Friday) for 4 wk, at 2.68, 3.13, and 3.58 m, s-1. Tension, depression, anger, vigor, fatigue, confusion, and a total mood disturbance (TMD) score were assessed every Friday prior to the treadmill running sessions. Oxygen consumption (VO2) was determined via the open-circuit method during each of the three running paces. VO2 values were averaged over 5 d and three speeds for each week (RE) and were correlated with the weekly TMD scores, resulting in a nonsignificant group correlation of r = -0.28. The within-subject group correlation between TMD scores and RE was r = 0.88. This positive correlation indicates that, when the focus of attention was on within-subject variation, weeks featuring more economical values were associated with more positive mental health profiles. Correlations between average VO2 and the six POMS subscales were tension. r = 0.81; depression, r = 0.73; anger, r = 0.58; vigor, r = -0.60: fatigue, r = 0.18; and confusion, r = 0.60. All correlation coefficients except for fatigue were significantly (P less than 0.01) related to average VO2. In conclusion, it appears that short-term fluctuations in RE of moderately trained male runners are closely tied to their mood state.  相似文献
