An open-ended coaxial probe is often used for investigating the dielectric properties of biological tissues. The present study indicates that in addition to the probe size, the penetration of the electromagnetic (EM) fields of an open-ended coaxial probe in contact with the skin is dependent on the applied frequency between 1 MHz and 1 GHz. At high frequencies, above 100 MHz, the measured dielectric parameters are functions of the dielectric properties of different cutaneous layers and subcutaneous fat. At lower frequencies, less than 10 MHz, the measurement is mainly dependent on the dielectric properties of superficial structures of the skin. The reason for this is that the probe, the surface of the skin, mainly stratum corneum, and underlying skin form a capacitance where the stratum corneum with low water content lies between the well-conducting dermis and the probe. The situation is equivalent to the frequency-dependent Maxwell-Wagner interfacial polarization. This result is verified by experimental dielectric measurements and with human skin in vivo.  相似文献

探究采用开端同轴线射频技术测量得到的结直肠癌组织和正常结直肠组织的介电特性是否具有显著差异,探讨能否应用该技术判断结直肠癌的病理类型。101例手术切除的新鲜离体结肠/直肠癌标本来自南方医科大学珠江医院手术室,应用开端同轴线仪器在170~500 MHz频率段分别检测癌组织和正常组织的相对介电常数和电导率。粗略选取170.32、212.90、255.48、298.06、383.22、468.38、500.00 MHz几个频率点的介电特性纳入统计分析。术后对标本行病理切片检查。结直肠癌组织的相对介电常数和电导率均比正常结直肠组织高(P<0.01),粘液腺癌组织的电导率在170.32、212.90、255.48、298.06、383.22 MHz时比腺癌组织高(P<0.05),结直肠癌高、中、低分化三种不同分化程度的介电特性无统计学意义(P>0.05)。应用开端同轴线仪器可以快速而准确地辨别结直肠癌组织和正常结直肠组织,同时可以判断结直肠癌的病理类型。  相似文献

The dielectric properties of a rat tumour (rhabdomyosarcoma R1H), skin and muscle were measured in vivo with an open-ended coaxial line and a computer-controlled system based on a network analyser. The permittivity of the tumour R1H and of the normal tissues in anaesthetised rats was determined at frequencies between 0.2 and 2.4 GHz. No significant differences were observed either between rat tumour and muscle or between normal and 15 Gy irradiated rat tumour and skin. However, after a hyperthermia treatment at 43 degrees C for 60 min the dielectric properties, especially of the rat skin, changed due to the hyperthermic induced oedema which is related to an increase in tissue water content. The process of the oedema modifies the dielectric properties of the skin to a higher degree than those of the tumour.  相似文献

The advantages and limitations of using partial differential analysis to assess the methodological uncertainty associated with the measurement of the dielectric properties of a material are discussed and an alternative pragmatic approach is proposed. It relies on repeat measurements of the dielectric properties of reference liquids and an analysis to estimate random and systematic uncertainties. Examples of measurement uncertainty are provided for well-defined monomolecular materials and for less homogeneous materials at microwave frequencies. All examples relate to measurement with an open-ended coaxial probe but the methodology is not specific to this technique. Examination of the components of uncertainty in the dielectric properties of biological tissue shows that, where the system is free of methodological bias, random fluctuations originating from sampling and natural inhomogeneity dominate the uncertainty budget. In such cases, the mean value of the measured parameter and the standard error of the mean can be taken as a good measure of the true value and its associated uncertainty.  相似文献

The results of measurements using an open-ended coaxial probe of the audio/radiofrequency dielectric properties of human skin in vivo, either dry or moistened with physiological saline, are reported. Permittivity and conductivity dispersion curves were parametrized by using a newly reported dispersion function (Raicu V 1999 Dielectric properties of biological matter: model combining Debye-type and 'universal' responses Phys. Rev. E 60 4677), and the results obtained are discussed in the light of the recent advances in this field. It is suggested that the coaxial probe reports on the properties of the superficial layer, the stratum corneum, when the skin surface is dry, whilst the signal from deeper skin layers becomes dominant after wetting the skin with conductive physiological saline.  相似文献

The sensitivity and specificity of dielectric spectroscopy for the detection of dielectric changes inside a multi-layered structure is investigated. We focus on providing a base for sensing physiological changes in the human skin, i.e. in the epidermal and dermal layers. The correlation between changes of the human skin's effective permittivity and changes of dielectric parameters and layer thickness of the epidermal and dermal layers is assessed using numerical simulations. Numerical models include fringing-field probes placed directly on a multi-layer model of the skin. The resulting dielectric spectra in the range from 100 kHz up to 100 MHz for different layer parameters and sensor geometries are used for a sensitivity and specificity analysis of this multi-layer system. First, employing a coaxial probe, a sensitivity analysis is performed for specific variations of the parameters of the epidermal and dermal layers. Second, the specificity of this system is analysed based on the roots and corresponding sign changes of the computed dielectric spectra and their first and second derivatives. The transferability of the derived results is shown by a comparison of the dielectric spectra of a coplanar probe and a scaled coaxial probe. Additionally, a comparison of the sensitivity of a coaxial probe and an interdigitated probe as a function of electrode distance is performed. It is found that the sensitivity for detecting changes of dielectric properties in the epidermal and dermal layers strongly depends on frequency. Based on an analysis of the dielectric spectra, changes in the effective dielectric parameters can theoretically be uniquely assigned to specific changes in permittivity and conductivity. However, in practice, measurement uncertainties may degrade the performance of the system.  相似文献

The dielectric properties of two low-water-content tissues, bone marrow and adipose tissue, were measured from 1 kHz to 1 GHz. From 1 kHz to 13 MHz, the measurements were performed using a parallel-plate capacitor method. From 10 MHz to 1 GHz, a reflection coefficient technique using an open-ended coaxial transmission line was employed. The tissue water contents ranged from 1 to almost 70% by weight. The dielectric properties correlate well with the values predicted by mixture theory. Comparison with previous results from high-water-content tissues suggests that bone marrow and adipose tissues contain less motionally altered water per unit dry volume than do the previously studied tissues with lower lipid fractions. The high degree of structural heterogeneity of these tissues was reflected in the large scatter of the data, a source of uncertainty that should be considered in practical applications of the present data.  相似文献

The dielectric properties of ten rat tissues at six different ages were measured at 37 degrees C in the frequency range of 130 MHz to 10 GHz using an open-ended coaxial probe and a computer controlled network analyser. The results show a general decrease of the dielectric properties with age. The trend is more apparent for brain, skull and skin tissues and less noticeable for abdominal tissues. The variation in the dielectric properties with age is due to the changes in the water content and the organic composition of tissues. The percentage decrease in the dielectric properties of certain tissues in the 30 to 70 day old rats at cellular phone frequencies have been tabulated. These data provide an important input in the provision of rigorous dosimetry in lifetime-exposure animal experiments. The results provide some insight into possible differences in the assessment of exposure for children and adults.  相似文献

Two novel materials have been developed to simulate the dielectric properties of human muscle and fat at 1000 MHz. These materials, which are based on ethanediol set with gelatine, are easily made and have good mechanical properties. The complex permittivity, epsilon *, of each material was measured with an open-ended coaxial sensor in conjunction with an automatic network analyser. Values of epsilon * at 1000 MHz and room temperature (49.4-24.4j for the muscle-equivalent material, 8.2-3.6j for the fat-equivalent) compared well with literature values for tissue at body temperature. Thermal properties were also considered. Specific heat capacities of the materials at room temperature were measured by differential scanning calorimetry and found to be very close to values predicted by theory. Densities were also measured and the thermal conductivities estimated. For comparison, new measurements were made of the specific heat and density of human muscle and fat at body temperature.  相似文献

In extracorporeal lithotripsy, the electro-acoustic efficiency of electrohydraulic generators is limited by the inductance of the electrical discharge circuit. A new shockwave generator is described that uses a coaxial discharge line enabling electro-acoustic efficiency to be greatly increased. The line is built using a para-electric ceramic with a relative dielectric constant of 1700, manufactured for use in high-voltage impulse mode. A coaxial spark gap, with minimal inductance, has been developed to obtain the triggered breakdown of the discharge line. Shock waves are created with a coaxial electrode plugged directly into the spark gap and immersed in an electrolyte of degassed saline. Electrode gap and electrolyte resistivity are adjusted to match the resistivity of the electrolyte volume between the underwater electrodes to the characteristic impedance of the line. The discharge line generates in the medium a rectangular current pulse with an amplitude of about 6000 A and a rise time of 50 ns. Compared with conventional generators, measurements of the expansive peak pressure pulse show an increase of 105% at 10 kV, 86·5% at 12 kV and 34·5% at 14 kV charging voltage. Electro-acoustic efficiency is found to be 11% instead of 5·5% for a conventional discharge circuit.  相似文献

The efficacy of emerging microwave breast cancer detection and treatment techniques will depend, in part, on the dielectric properties of normal breast tissue. However, knowledge of these properties at microwave frequencies has been limited due to gaps and discrepancies in previously reported small-scale studies. To address these issues, we experimentally characterized the wideband microwave-frequency dielectric properties of a large number of normal breast tissue samples obtained from breast reduction surgeries at the University of Wisconsin and University of Calgary hospitals. The dielectric spectroscopy measurements were conducted from 0.5 to 20 GHz using a precision open-ended coaxial probe. The tissue composition within the probe's sensing region was quantified in terms of percentages of adipose, fibroconnective and glandular tissues. We fit a one-pole Cole-Cole model to the complex permittivity data set obtained for each sample and determined median Cole-Cole parameters for three groups of normal breast tissues, categorized by adipose tissue content (0-30%, 31-84% and 85-100%). Our analysis of the dielectric properties data for 354 tissue samples reveals that there is a large variation in the dielectric properties of normal breast tissue due to substantial tissue heterogeneity. We observed no statistically significant difference between the within-patient and between-patient variability in the dielectric properties.  相似文献

We have investigated the dielectric properties of human skin in vivo at frequencies up to 10 GHz using a time-domain reflectometry method with open-ended coaxial probes. Since gamma-dispersion results from the reorientation of free water molecules, the free water content of skin is quantitatively determined by dielectric measurements. The free water content of finger skin increased by about 10% after soaking in 37 degrees C water for 30 min, and it systematically decreased again through the drying process, as expected. Thus this analytical method has been applied to the study of skin burns. The free water content of burned human cheek skin due to hydrofluoric acid was significantly lower than that of normal skin, and the burned skin recovered through the healing process. In the case of a human hand skin burn due to heat, although the free water content was almost the same as that of normal skin at the beginning, it decreased during the healing process for the first 10 days, then began to increase. Although the number of test subjects was one for each experiment, it was shown that free water content is a good indicator for evaluating skin health and can be well monitored by dielectric spectroscopy.  相似文献

The development of microwave breast cancer detection and treatment techniques has been driven by reports of substantial contrast in the dielectric properties of malignant and normal breast tissues. However, definitive knowledge of the dielectric properties of normal and diseased breast tissues at microwave frequencies has been limited by gaps and discrepancies across previously published studies. To address these issues, we conducted a large-scale study to experimentally determine the ultrawideband microwave dielectric properties of a variety of normal, malignant and benign breast tissues, measured from 0.5 to 20 GHz using a precision open-ended coaxial probe. Previously, we reported the dielectric properties of normal breast tissue samples obtained from reduction surgeries. Here, we report the dielectric properties of normal (adipose, glandular and fibroconnective), malignant (invasive and non-invasive ductal and lobular carcinomas) and benign (fibroadenomas and cysts) breast tissue samples obtained from cancer surgeries. We fit a one-pole Cole-Cole model to the complex permittivity data set of each characterized sample. Our analyses show that the contrast in the microwave-frequency dielectric properties between malignant and normal adipose-dominated tissues in the breast is considerable, as large as 10:1, while the contrast in the microwave-frequency dielectric properties between malignant and normal glandular/fibroconnective tissues in the breast is no more than about 10%.  相似文献

In this paper, we present the results of non-invasive blood glycaemia measurements. The blood used in the measurements was calf blood. The measurement method uses an electromagnetic sensor based on eddy currents, which allows the detection of blood glycaemia levels through the variation of the dielectric parameters of the blood. A change in blood glucose concentration causes a variation in the dielectric parameters, in particular conductivity. Detection is only possible at a resonant frequency. The measurements were taken in a static and dynamic state (with and without circulation of blood). The blood is inside a plastic tube placed within the sensor and is surrounded by gelatine, which simulates muscular tissue. The plastic tube simulates the vein where blood circulation occurs. The in vitro results in both cases (static and dynamic) are provided. Under unfavourable conditions we can detect a change of +/- 2 g/l of glucose. We present and discuss these results.  相似文献

The dielectric properties (conductivity, kappa and relative permittivity, epsilon) of excised rat lung are modified by lung air and water content. The measurements of these quantities were made over the frequency range of 10 kHz to 100 MHz with an open-ended coaxial probe. The following relationships were analyzed in an oleic acid-induced pulmonary edema model using 18 animals: the spectra of kappa, epsilon and the loss tangent as a function of lung air and water content. Secondly, an isolated-perfused lung system was produced to induce a gradual increase in lung water. The time course of kappa, epsilon and the loss tangent for one excised lung was analyzed. The principal findings were: (i) a decrease in kappa and epsilon with increasing air content, (ii) an increase in kappa and epsilon with increasing water content, and (iii) a good correlation between lung water content and maximum loss tangent that was insensitive to changes in air content. We conclude that this technique could provide a quantitative assessment of lung water during pulmonary edema formation.  相似文献

Starting from a rigorous formulation for the admittance of an open ended coaxial probe, this paper identifies the simplifying assumptions that are introduced to obtain more practical solutions. The predictions of the models are compared to each other and to experimental data obtained on an independently calibrated experimental set-up. The advantages and limitations of a model are determined by the theoretical derivation and the numerical solution. The model identified as most suitable for the measurement of the dielectric properties of biological materials is used to determine the relative permittivity and conductivity of muscle and skull bone in the frequency range 1 MHz to 20 GHz.  相似文献

Abstract

The reported paper presents the development of a microwave sensor with a resonant frequency 2.4?GHz. The sensor is also demonstrated in vitro to investigate the variation in its response as a function of glucose concentration. The sensor could be used for the monitoring of blood glucose level in diabetics through non-invasive technology. The approach followed is based on the notion that, change in glucose concentration in the blood affects dielectric properties of blood which in turn produce an impact on reflection properties of the sensor. This effect on response of sensor will be ultimately used to estimate blood glucose concentration. The design specifications considered for the development of sensor are defined in the paper. The experimental setup for in vitro experiment and procedure employed for the investigation of the reflection properties of the sensor as a function of glucose concentration are also discussed in detail. The shift in resonance frequency and the change in the magnitude of the reflection coefficient of proposed sensor have been observed. The reported measurement results are the preliminary results in exploring the implementation of proposed sensor for non-invasive blood glucose monitoring.  相似文献
