The power of simulation: imagining one's own and other's behavior 总被引:14,自引:0,他引:14
A large number of cognitive neuroscience studies point to the similarities in the neural circuits activated during the generation, imagination, as well as observation of one's own and other's behavior. Such findings support the shared representations account of social cognition, which is suggested to provide the basic mechanism for social interaction. Mental simulation may also be a representational tool to understand the self and others. However, successfully navigating these shared representations--both within oneself and between individuals--constitutes an essential functional property of any autonomous agent. It will be argued that self-awareness and agency, mediated by the temporoparietal (TPJ) area and the prefrontal cortex, are critical aspects of the social mind. Thus, differences as well as similarities between self and other representations at the neural level may be related to the degrees of self-awareness and agency. Overall, these data support the view that social cognition draws on both domain-general mechanisms and domain-specific embodied representations. 相似文献

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, brain activation patterns were examined in response to hearing one's own first name in contrast to hearing the names of others. There are several regions in the left hemisphere that show greater activation to one's own name, including middle frontal cortex, middle and superior temporal cortex, and cuneus. These findings provide evidence that hearing one's own name has unique brain functioning activation specific to one's own name in relation to the names of others. 相似文献

Long-term cultural experiences influence neural response to one''s own and friend''s faces. The present study investigated whether an individual''s culturally specific pattern of neural activity to faces can be modulated by temporary access to other cultural frameworks using a self-construal priming paradigm. Event-related potentials were recorded from British and Chinese adults during judgments of orientations of one''s own and friend''s faces after they were primed with independent and interdependent self-construals. We found that an early frontal negative activity at 220–340 ms (the anterior N2) differentiated between one''s own and friend''s faces in both cultural groups. Most remarkably, for British participants, priming an interdependent self-construal reduced the default anterior N2 to their own faces. For Chinese participants, however, priming an independent self-construal suppressed the default anterior N2 to their friend''s faces. These findings indicate fast modulations of culturally specific neural responses induced by temporary access to other cultural frameworks. 相似文献

The current study used functional magnetic resonance imaging to explore the effects of manipulating the gender relation of participants to their excluders during an interactive ball-toss game. Ventral anterior cingulate cortex activation was higher during exclusion by same-gender peers, while right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex activation negatively correlated with self-reported distress in other-gender exclusion. Results imply that exclusion by one's own gender is fundamentally different from exclusion by the opposite gender, and suggest a regulatory role for ventrolateral prefrontal cortex in response to out-group exclusion. Individual differences in implicit gender attitudes modulated neural responses to exclusion. The importance of these findings to investigations of social cognition is discussed. 相似文献

Hearing one's own first name automatically elicits a robust electrophysiological response, even in conditions of reduced consciousness like sleep. In a search for objective clues to superior cognitive functions in comatose patients, we looked for an optimal auditory stimulation paradigm mobilizing a large population of neurons. Our hypothesis was that wider ERPs would be obtained in response to the subject's own name (SON) when a familiar person uttered it. In 15 healthy awake volunteers, we tested a passive oddball paradigm with three different novels presented with the same probability (P = 0.02): SON uttered by a familiar voice (FV) or by an unknown voice (NFV) and a non-vocal stimulus (NV) which preserved most of the physical characteristics of SON FV. ERP (32 electrodes) and scalp current density (SCD) maps were analyzed. SON appeared to generate more robust responses related to involuntary attention switching (MMN/N2b, novelty P3) than NV. When uttered by a familiar person, the SON elicited larger response amplitudes in the late phase of novelty P3 (after 300 ms). Most important differences were found in the late slow waves where two components could be temporally and spatially dissociated. A larger parietal component for FV than for NFV suggested deeper high-level processing, even if the subjects were not required to explicitly differentiate or recognize the voices. This passive protocol could therefore provide a valuable tool for clinicians to test residual superior cognitive functions in uncooperative patients. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: A major challenge in the management of severely brain-injured patients with altered states of consciousness is to estimate their residual perception of the environment. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the integrity of detection of one's own name in patients in a behaviorally well-documented vegetative state (VS), patients in a minimally conscious state (MCS), and patients with locked-in syndrome. DESIGN: We recorded the auditory evoked potentials to the patient's own name and to 7 other equiprobable first names in 15 brain-damaged patients. RESULTS: A P3 component was observed in response to the patient's name in all patients with locked-in syndrome, in all MCS patients, and in 3 of 5 patients in a VS. P3 latency was significantly (P<.05) delayed for MCS and VS patients compared with healthy volunteers. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that partially preserved semantic processing could be observed in noncommunicative brain-damaged patients, notably for the detection of salient stimuli, such as the subject's own name. This function seems delayed in MCS and (if present) in VS patients. More important, a P3 response does not necessarily reflect conscious perception and cannot be used to differentiate VS from MCS patients. 相似文献

Decision-making involves the ability to choose between competing actions that are associated with uncertain benefits and penalties. The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), which mimics real-life decision-making, involves learning a reward-punishment rule over multiple trials. Patients with damage to ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC) show deficits learning these rules, although this performance deficit is not exclusively associated with VMPFC damage. In this study, we used functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) to study the roles of prefrontal cortex regions involved in rule learning and rule application in healthy adults using an adapted version of the Iowa Gambling Task. Participants (N = 20) were asked to infer rules over series of 16 trials in a two-deck card game. Rewards were given on each trial and punishment was unpredictable. For half of the series, those decks that gave high rewards were also better decks in the long run. For the other half of the series, the decks that gave low rewards were better decks in the long run. Behaviorally, participants started to differentiate between advantageous and disadvantageous decks after approximately four/six trials, and learning occurred faster for high-reward decks. Lateral PFC (lat-PFC) and Anterior Cingulate Coretex (ACC)/pre-supplementary motor area (pre-SMA) were most active for early decisions, whereas medial orbital frontal cortex (med-OFC) was most active for decisions made later in the series. These results suggest that lat-PFC and ACC/pre-SMA are important for directing behavior towards long-term goals, whereas med-OFC represents reward values towards which behavior should be directed. 相似文献

This study evaluates the event-related potential (ERP) components in a single outcome gambling task that involved monetary losses and gains. The participants were 50 healthy young volunteers (25 males and 25 females). The gambling task involved valence (loss and gain) and amount (50 cent and 10 cent) as outcomes. The outcome-related negativity (ORN/N2) and outcome-related positivity (ORP/P3) were analyzed and compared across conditions and gender. Monetary gain (compared to loss) and higher amount (50 cent compared to 10 cent) produced higher amplitudes and shorter latencies in both ORN and ORP components. Difference wave plots showed that earlier processing (200-400 ms) is dominated by the valence (loss/gain) while later processing (after 400 ms) is marked by the amount (50 cent/10 cent). Functional mapping using Low Resolution Electromagnetic Tomography (LORETA) indicated that the ORN separated the loss against gain in both genders, while the ORP activity distinguished the 50 cent against 10 cent in males. This study further strengthens the view that separate brain processes/circuitry may mediate loss and gain. Although there were no gender differences in behavioral and impulsivity scores, ORN and ORP measures for different task conditions had significant correlations with behavioral scores. This gambling paradigm may potentially offer valuable indicators to study outcome processing and impulsivity in normals as well as in clinical populations. 相似文献

Neuronal responses to the scratching and caressing of one's own skin in patients with skin‐picking disorder 下载免费PDF全文
Skin‐picking disorder (SPD) is a common mental disorder. The predominant symptom involves the repeated scratching and picking of one's own skin. This behavior causes severe tissue damage (sores, scars, and infections), often leading to disfigurement. Besides physical injury, SPD is associated with clinically significant distress and impairment in important areas of functioning. The neurobiological mechanisms of SPD are still poorly understood. In this study, 30 SPD patients and 31 control participants (35 women, 26 men) with a mean age of 34 years were instructed to either scratch or gently stroke a small skin area on their arms during functional magnetic resonance imaging. Gender‐specific effects were revealed. In the female sample, SPD patients showed less activation in the middle frontal gyrus (MFG) and primary/secondary somatosensory cortices during caressing relative to scratching than controls. In addition, contrasting caressing with a rest condition revealed reduced activation in the somatosensory cortex (concerned with the decoding and integration of tactile information) and the MFG (attention/cognitive monitoring) in female patients. No differential brain activation was found in the male sample. This symptom provocation study hints at a reduced sensitivity of pleasant touch in women with SPD. 相似文献

Previous event-related brain potential (ERP) studies have identified a medial frontal negativity (MFN) in response to negative feedback or monetary losses. In contrast, no EEG correlates have been identified related to the processing of monetary gains or positive feedback. This result is puzzling considering the large number of brain regions involved in the processing of rewards. In the present study we used a gambling task to investigate this issue with trial-by-trial wavelet-based time-frequency analysis of the electroencephalographic signal recorded non-invasively in healthy humans. Using this analysis a mediofrontal oscillatory component in the beta range was identified which was associated to monetary gains. In addition, standard time-domain ERP analysis showed an MFN for losses that was associated with an increase in theta power in the time-frequency analysis. We propose that the reward-related beta oscillatory activity signifies the functional coupling of distributed brain regions involved in reward processing. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of the active task involvement versus the passive knowledge of the structure of the stimulation on event-related potentials (ERPs) to violation in number sequences. This should contribute to future development of an ERP test for neurological patients. METHODS: ERPs were recorded in subjects who listened to 4-item sequences of numbers incrementing by one. Half of the sequences had an appropriate end item, whereas the other half ended inappropriately. The role of active versus passive condition was investigated in a between-subject design. RESULTS: Incorrectly ending sequences yielded a large P300 wave in all groups. Subjects who were explicitly informed about the nature of the stimulation but did not have a motor task displayed a slow negativity which followed P300 and slightly suppressed it. In addition, incorrect sequence endings elicited an early (70-200 ms) negativity at frontal sites. This effect was inverted on mastoids. CONCLUSIONS: Auditory perception of 3 consecutive numbers constituting a simple incrementing row leads to building a strong expectancy concerning the subsequent number, and unexpected events are detected already after the initial phoneme. 相似文献

Theories have proposed that both the stimulus-preceding negativity (SPN) and the medial frontal negativity (MFN) reflect affective/motivational processing. We examined the effect of the motivational impact of feedback stimuli on these ERPs using a simple gambling task, focusing on the influence of prior losses and gains on ERPs and choice behavior. Choices were riskier following large losses than following small losses or large gains. The MFN, however, was larger following larger gains. The SPN preceding the outcome was also larger after a greater gain. Thus, we confirmed that both the MFN and the SPN respond to the motivational properties of the feedback. A dissociation between risk-taking behavior and these ERPs suggests that there could be two monitoring systems: one that leads to riskier responses following losses and a second that leads to heightened expectancy. 相似文献

How do we become aware of our own actions? This classical question is still a matter of debate: does consciousness depend on central efferent signals or derive from peripheral information? In this paper, we had the opportunity to study a haptically deafferented patient using a well-tested experimental paradigm where a cognitive conflict is produced between motor intention, proprioception and visual feedback. Our results show that the patient was able to solve the conflict and to generate accurate movements to a target in the absence of proprioceptive feedback and with very limited visual feedback from her movements. Yet, she could not report any conscious perception of the conflict and showed no conscious knowledge of her actual performance. We suggest that information derived from efferent processes cannot in themselves be a source for conscious experience about our own actions. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The possibility that delusions of influence could be related to abnormal recognition of one's own actions was investigated in persons with schizophrenia. METHOD: Schizophrenic patients with (N=6) and without (N=18) delusions of influence were compared with normal subjects (N=29) on an action recognition task. The image of a virtual right hand holding a joystick was presented to the subjects through a mirror so that the image was superimposed on their real hand holding a real joystick. Subjects executed discrete movements in different directions. Angular biases and temporal delays were randomly introduced in some trials, such that the movement of the virtual hand departed from the movement executed by the subjects. After each trial, subjects were asked whether the movement they saw was their own. RESULTS: Compared with normal subjects, both patient groups made significantly more recognition errors in trials with temporal delays. In trials with angular biases, the error rate of patients with delusions of influence significantly differed from that of comparison subjects and from that of patients without delusions of influence. CONCLUSIONS: The findings support the hypothesis that delusions of influence are associated with a quantifiable difficulty in correct self-attribution of actions. This difficulty may be related to a specific impairment of a neural action attribution system. 相似文献

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a nocturnal respiratory disorder associated with cognitive and behavioral sequelae, including impairments in executive functioning (EF). Previous literature has focused on "cool" EF, meaning abilities such as working memory and planning that do not involve affective control requirements. Little is known about the impact OSA may have on "hot" EF that involves regulation of affect and risk-related decision-making, and that may be particularly salient during adolescence, when these skills are rapidly developing. This study examined performance on the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), a task believed to assess aspects of "hot" EF, in overweight adolescents at risk for OSA. Consistent with hypotheses, individuals without OSA made more beneficial decisions on the IGT over time, but participants with OSA did not benefit from feedback and continued to make choices associated with higher initial rewards, but greater long-term losses. The relationship between developmental level and IGT performance was moderated by OSA status. Individuals with OSA did not demonstrate the expected developmental gains in performance during the IGT. This finding suggests that OSA may impact the development of critical aspects of EF, or at least the expression of these skills during the developmentally important period of adolescence. 相似文献

Feedback negativity (FN) is elicited when the outcome is worse than expected. Here we report that changes in outcome probabilities affect the reward prediction level reflected in the FN. We used a slot machine-like gambling task in which a button press produced one of the six outcomes: -10, -5, -1, +1, +5, and +10. The outcomes were first presented with equal probability, and subsequently, either +10 or -10 was presented more frequently. The smaller gains elicited an FN when the largest gain occurred frequently, whereas the smaller losses continued eliciting an FN even when the largest loss occurred frequently. The reward prediction level appears to be easy to raise but difficult to diminish. This disposition helps overcome a suboptimal situation. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Orbitofrontal cortex regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) is lower in cocaine-dependent subjects than in non-cocaine-dependent subjects. Performance on the Gambling Task, a test of decision making, is a putative correlate of orbitofrontal cortex activity and is reportedly impaired in drug-dependent subjects. The authors tested the hypothesis that lower Gambling Task scores would be associated with lower resting orbitofrontal cortex rCBF in cocaine-dependent subjects. METHOD: Fifteen healthy comparison subjects and 13 abstinent cocaine-dependent subjects underwent resting single photon emission computed tomography to measure rCBF, after which they completed the Gambling Task. RESULTS: Resting anterior cingulate and left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex rCBF significantly correlated with performance on the Gambling Task, but orbitofrontal cortex rCBF did not. Left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex rCBF was lower in the cocaine-dependent subjects than in the comparison subjects. CONCLUSIONS: Resting anterior cingulate and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex rCBF is significantly related to decision making, as assessed by the Gambling Task. 相似文献
