Mental health nursing consultation: a study of expectations.

Psychiatric nurses working in the field of mental health consultation to medical-surgical nursing units may find it useful to become more fully aware of what is expected of the mental health nurse consultant role and how they can best meet these expectations in their individual situations and setting. This study demonstrated that the medical-surgical nurses in one hospital do have specific expectations for the role of the mental health nurse consultant. To fulfill these expectations the mental health nurse consultant should identify her role in light of the above findings and attempt to integrate her job within the boundaries set forth by her hospital, the nursing team with whom she is working, and the patient's needs.

Mental health consultation in a home care agency.

A mental health nurse, educationally and clinically prepared as a specialist, can be effectively utilized as a consultant to aid nurse generalists in assessment and intervention of patients in a home health care agency. An individual staff nurse consulting with the specialist or a group of nurses provides the setting for consultant led case discussions. Consultation is a highly efficient use of specialist's knowledge and skills in health care delivery, and also provides learning opportunities for staff.     

Nursing staff satisfaction on a mental health unit

The present study set out to assess the level of nurses’ job satisfaction in an acute in-patient mental health setting. All but one (n = 22) of the full-time nursing staff employed on the unit took part in the study. Unlike many previous studies where the level of job satisfaction was assessed using predetermined questionnaire items but without providing an understanding for workers’ choices, the present study sought an estimation of what job characteristics nurses saw as important, an estimation regarding their current satisfaction with each characteristic and, importantly, the reasons behind their choices.     

Depression in a pediatric intensive care unit nursing staff

This study compared the depressive symptoms of 36 ICU nurses to 23 non-ICU nurses. The study was conducted in a pediatric setting where critically ill children may present unique demands. The ICU nursing staff had a significantly higher frequency (28%) of symptoms consistent with a depressive disorder than either the age group norm (12%) or the non-ICU nurses (13%). This finding suggests a continued need for investigation into the stresses associated with the delivery of critical care.

Over recent years, the International Council of Nurses (ICN) has been concerned that health providers are sometimes not adequately prepared to give quality care and that resources are often well below those targeted for other sectors of the health care system. In 1991 the ICN chose 'Mental Health … Nurses in Action' as the theme for International Nurses Day on 12 May. With the help of the ICN-provided educational kits, national nurses' associations updated nurses on the problems and informed the public that nurses as a group can provide many of the mental health services to people and answer their families needs.     

护理人员参与医师会诊的实践与效果评价

目的探讨护理人员参与医师会诊的效果。方法按照不同层次护理人员的会诊学习计划,组织护理人员参与医师的各种会诊活动,并通过个人、科室和患者3方面进行效果评价。结果护理人员参与医师会诊活动后,个人评价总分、专业理论和专业技能评分均高于参与前,科室评价除护理文书外,其他各项合格率均高于参与前,患者满意度明显提高(P<0.01或P<0.05)。结论护理人员参与医师会诊活动,有助于提高护理人员的综合素质、临床护理质量和患者满意度。     

Technical safety index of a teaching hospitals pediatrics unit nursing staff

This study was aimed at identifying the Technical Safety Index (ITS, in the Portuguese acronym) of the nursing team of the University of S?o Paulo's Hospital Universitário's Pediatrics Unit (2001-2005). Percentages for each type of absence of nursing professionals were obtained from the Nursing Department or calculated based on the equations found in the literature. Absences due to days off were the highest percentage. Total percentages of unplanned absences were lower than those referring to planned absences, which contradict nurses who report this type of absence as the main cause for health institutions understaffing. IST variation highlights the importance of carrying out systematic evaluations of the nursing team's absences, as well as of identifying specific indexes for each unit, as subsidies for the evaluation of the personnel in health organizations.     

Mental health nursing from a solution focused perspective

Solution focused therapy (SFT) is a relatively new and increasingly popular model of brief intervention in mental health care. The central assertion of SFT is that the individual's problem or difficulty (and its cause) need not determine the direction in which the discussion proceeds. Instead the role of the SFT practitioner is to identify what the individual wants to be different and then to explore and elaborate on that difference. This paper outlines the principles of SFT and highlights the compatibility of this approach with the core values of nursing practice. Specific strategies and techniques used in SFT are detailed with clinical examples to illustrate the application of SFT to mental health nursing practice. A summary of current research outcomes and future prospects for SFT in clinical practice and education is also presented.
