Adult Macrobrachium lanchesteri were exposed for a 4-day period in laboratory conditions to a range of copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn) and lead (Pb) concentrations. Mortality was assessed and median lethal times (LT??) and concentrations (LC??) were calculated. At the end of the 4-day period, live prawns were used to determine bioconcentration of the metals. LT?? and LC?? increased with the decrease in mean exposure concentrations and times, respectively, for all metals. LC??s for 96 hours for Cu, Cd, Zn and Pb were 32.3, 7.0, 525.1 and 35.0 μg/L, respectively. Cu, Cd, Zn and Pb bioconcentration in M. lanchesteri increases with exposure to increasing concentrations and Cd was the most toxic to M. lanchesteri, followed by Pb, Cu and Zn. Comparison of LC?? values for metals for this species with those for other freshwater crustacean organisms reveals that M. lanchesteri is equally or more sensitive to heavy metals than most other tested crustaceans.  相似文献

Characteristics of the spatial and temporal distributions of selected dissolved heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Hg and Cd) in Bohai Bay, north China was investigated. Water samples from 22 sites were collected and analyzed for the selected metals with atomic absorption spectrometry from the year of 1996 to 2005. Relatively high concentrations of Cu, Zn, Pb and Hg were detected, with maximum concentrations in the 10-year period of 16.30, 422.00, 40.40, 0.23 μg/L respectively. The concentrations of Cd in all samples were quite low, with maximum level of 0.89 μg/L. The spatial distribution of dissolved Cu, Zn and Pb was analogous, where their average concentrations generally descended from the coastline to the central areas of the bay. Differently, for Hg and Cd, relatively high concentrations occurred not only in inshore but also in offshore areas. Measured data of heavy metals were compared with sea water quality standard of China (SWQSC). Cd concentrations in all samples were below SWQSC Grade-I. The percentages of Cu, Zn, Pb, and Hg at Grade-III levels in Bohai Bay were 2.67%, 30.00%, 30.43% and 0.36%, respectively, suggesting the severe contamination of Zn and Pb in this area. Terrestrial inputs via different rivers and sewages may be the important source for the heavy metals contamination.  相似文献

The concentrations (mg/kg dry weight) of Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Hg, and Pb were measured in benthic macroalgae and invertebrates collected in the upper transboundary tributaries of the Onon River, Transbaikalia, Russia. The background concentration ranges in Cladophora fracta, Ulothrix zonata and Zygnemataceae were: 6.4–9.1 for Cu, 27.2–73.1 for Zn, 0.4–0.9 for Cd, 6.7–35.3 for As, 0.01–0.02 for Hg, and 1.9–4.3 for Pb. In Brachycentrus americanus and Lymnaea media the concentration ranges were: 9.0–25.5 for Cu, 21.4–96.0 for Zn, 0.1–0.3 for Cd, 1.7–5.6 for As, 0.004–0.02 for Hg, and 0.4–2.2 for Pb. The concentrations of Cu, Zn, Pb, and Hg were consistent with data for uncontaminated areas. Under contamination conditions the concentrations in C. fracta were: 938 for Zn, 513 for Pb, and 9.5 for Cd; in Lymnaea media were: 46.8 for Cu, 176 for Zn, 52.3 for Pb, and 3.0 for Cd. All the organisms showed a common response to contamination, and consequently can be used as biomonitors of contamination by heavy metals.  相似文献

Characteristics of the spatial and temporal distributions of selected heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb and Hg) in Bohai Bay, north China was examined. Surface sediment samples from 15 sites were collected and analyzed for the selected metals with atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) from the year of 1997–2007. Mean concentrations of metals in the 11-year period showed that Hg and Zn concentrations slightly fluctuated, while Cu, Cd and Pb concentrations in sediments varied with time. High levels of heavy metals occurred not only along the shoreline but also at some site in the inner part of the bay, suggesting the contamination sources of heavy metals from both terrestrial inputs and the atmospheric deposition. Compared with the environmental background values of selected heavy metals it indicated that anthropogenic activities influenced the sediment quality. The contamination factor \textCif {\text{C}}^{i}_{f} , which is used to evaluate the pollution of the environment, showed that the contamination by selected heavy metals was moderate. Cd, Zn and Pb were the main polluting elements in this area.  相似文献

Wetlands tend to accumulate heavy metals from local sources, such as Pb shot used for waterfowl hunting, and from regional sources, such as atmospheric deposition and riverine or marine inputs. We determined concentrations of six heavy metals (Cr, Mn, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb) in livers of waterbirds shot by hunters in five Spanish wetlands to study the different factors that can contribute to the accumulation of these metals (sex, age, diet, grit, and Pb shot ingestion). Differences among wetlands were observed only for Cr, Cu, and Cd. Differences among species were observed for all the metals, and Cu was notably higher in pochards (Aythya and Netta genus) than in other waterfowl. Cu, Zn, and Cd concentrations increased with age, and only Pb showed differences related to sex, with males having higher concentrations than females. Most metals other than Pb were correlated with each other. Lead was dependent on Pb shot ingestion. Grit ingestion positively correlated with concentrations of Cr and to a lesser extent with Mn, Zn, and Cd. Ingestion of grit or shot may obscure relationships between metals and diet. Herbivorous species, which had more grit in the gizzard, had higher Cr, Zn, and Cd concentrations. Granivorous birds, which have the highest rates of Pb shot ingestion, had the highest concentrations of Pb. Grit and Pb shot ingestion are both important sources of heavy metals for waterbirds. Concentrations of heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni, Cd, Co, and Hg) were determined in the muscle, liver, and kidney of 42 Caspian seals and fishes collected from the Caspian Sea in 1993. Higher Mn and lower Fe and Cu concentrations were found in the liver in comparison with other marine pinnipeds. Lower Cu concentrations in the liver appear to be a common feature in small seals belonging to subgenus Pusa, which include ringed, Baikal, and Caspian seals. However, low Fe and high Mn in livers were specific to Caspian seal. Concentrations of toxic metals such as Hg and Cd were relatively low. Pinniped species can be divided into two groups, based on accumulations of Cd or Hg in the liver. Interestingly, it was found that Cd-accumulating groups feed on invertebrates, whereas the preferred diet of Hg accumulators is fish. Caspian seals seemed to belong to the Hg-accumulating group. Cd and Hg concentrations in the liver and kidney of young animals increased with age. Mercury concentrations in adult animals increased with age continuously, whereas Cd concentrations in adult animals decreased. The concentrations of heavy metals in the edible tissue of commonly fished species of the Victorian coast of Australia are reported. The metals studied were As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, Se, and Zn and the fish species examined were snapper (Pagruss auratus), flathead (Platycephalus bassenssis and Neoplatycephalus richardsoni), lobster (Jasus edwardsii), and abalone (Haliotis rubra). None of the fish species studied had average concentrations exceeding the maximum levels specified for As, Cd, Hg, and Pb by the Food Standards Australia and New Zealand Food Standards code. Additionally, the concentrations of Cu, Se, and Zn were close to or below the median values generally expected in these species. Essential trace elements Se and Zn were found to be well regulated by all fish species. Although also essential, Cu was not so well regulated, especially in abalone. Nonessential metals As, Cd, and Hg are not regulated in the studied fish and their concentrations in the fish tissue are dependent on size and fishing zone. Metal concentrations were not largely affected by sex. Surprisingly, the concentrations of metals in fish in Port Phillip Bay, a zone, which includes the major cities of Melbourne and Geelong and is known to have high concentrations of metals in the water and sediment, were not consistently higher than those in other less-populated fishing zones.  相似文献

As part of a long-term monitoring study of the anthropogenic pollution of the Lake of Balaton (Hungary) the concentrations of toxic metals (Cd2+, Hg2+, Pb2+), as well as of bioelements (Cu2+ and Zn2+) were measured in the muscle, gill and liver of bream (Abramis brama L.) collected in the open water during the autumn of 1999, The highest Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn concentrations were detected in the gill and liver of fish, whereas the highest Hg concentrations were measured in the muscle. The maximum metal concentrations measured in the muscle of bream were generally below maximum permissible levels for human consumption established by the Hungarian Food Directorate. Depending on the sampling site, significantly higher Cd, Hg and Pb concentrations (p < 0.05) were detected in the muscle of fish samples collected from the Western basin, while no significant differences were observed for Cu and Zn. In the muscle and gill an increasing trend of heavy metal (Cd and Cu) load characterizes the individuals of the 2-4 calendar age group (p < 0.05), while for the older specimens the concentration of these elements decreased significantly (p < 0.05). Positive relationships on the whole age scale were found for Cd in the liver, for Pb in the gill, and for Hg both in the muscle and the liver of fish.  相似文献

The concentrations and distribution of metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni, Co, As, Hg, and Cd) in an earthworm,Pheretima hilgendorfi, and their variations with growth were investigated. Higher concentrations of the metals were found in the pre-clitellar regions of the earthworm compared with the post-clitellar ones; Cd, Cu, and Hg were relatively high in the gut wall. The body concentration of Pb and Hg decreased with increased body length (age) and weight, while the opposite was found for Cd and As. The accumulation of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Ni, and Co in the earthworm depends primarily on the metabolic turnover, whereas the accumulation of Pb, Hg, Cd and As, is dependent upon the age or exposure time. Small earthworms showed faster uptake and excretion rates of Pb and Hg than the large ones, and the biological half-lives of Pb and Hg were relatively short compared with those of Cd and As. The large earthworms exhibited a decrease of Hg in the bodies, probably due to excretion of Hgvia spawning. Based upon these results, the sizes and parts of the earthworm suitable for purposes of research are discussed.  相似文献

Sperm cell and embryo toxicity tests using the Mediterranean sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus Lmk were performed to assess the toxicity of As3+, Cd2+, Cr3+, Ni2+, Pb2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, and Hg2+. The aim of this study was to improve information about the comparative sensitivity of sea urchin bioassays to the heavy metals, which are an important cause of contamination in the ecosystem of the Lagoon of Venice. Considering the data in mM/L, the order of toxicity is Hg2+ > Cu2+ > Zn2+ > As3+ > or = Cr3+ > or = Cd2+ > or = Pb2+ > or = Ni2+ for the sperm cell test and Hg2+ > or = Pb2+ > Cu2+ > Zn2+ > Cd2+ > Ni2+ > As3+ > or = Cr3+ for the embryo test. New toxicity data for metals expressed as median effective concentration (EC50) and no-observed-effect concentration (NOEC) are reported for the Mediterranean species. Accurate observations of embryotoxic effects at increasing metal concentrations were done, detecting some different behaviors in metal toxicity. Toxicity data compared with water column and pore-water concentrations recorded in the Lagoon of Venice (Italy) demonstrate the potential ability of bioassays using sea urchin to detect important contaminants in this ecosystem.  相似文献

The techniques of morphometric analysis were used to study the ultrastructural changes induced inPlectonema boryanum (Cyanophyceae) by heavy metal exposure. Four of the test metals (Mn, Zn, Hg, and Cd) produced no changes in overall cell dimensions. Two metals (Pb and Cu) produced significant increases in cell size and two other metals (Co and Ni) caused significant decrease in cell size. Mn, Pb, Co, Ni, and Cd caused significant increases in the surface area of the cell's thylakoids and Ni, Co, Zn, and Hg caused a significant reduction in the volume of the intrathylakoidal spaces. All tested metals except Pb and Mn caused the production of extra intracellular membrane whorls. Pb, Mn, Co, Zn, Hg, Cd, and Ni caused coalescence of cellular lipid while Cu caused a reduction in cellular lipid content. Co caused a reduction in the number of polyhedral bodies and Cd caused an increase in the volume of the cell's polyphosphate bodies. The physiological significance of these findings are discussed in terms of potential toxic action of cations and the cellular mechanisms for the detoxification of cations once they enter the cell. Common mechanisms of both procaryotic and eucaryotic algae are discussed and the utilization of stereological techniques for electron microscopic morphometric analysis is established in studies of metal toxicity at the cellular level.  相似文献

Levels of the heavy metals Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn were measured in treatment Suez ponds for both systems; the American (ASP) and French (FSP) system ponds are within the limits established which were sublethal for both phytoplankton and fish. The mean values of heavy metals in water during the period of investigation (1990-92) were 0.46, 2.21, 0.23 and 1.30 ppb in ASP and 0.47, 2.07, 0.22 and 1.20 ppb in FSP, respectively, where Cu and Cd recorded the lowest values, and Pb had higher value than Zn. As a result of the encountered data, the treatment processes of the fishponds water were found to be suitable for aquaculture and agriculture.  相似文献

In the present study, we report the concentrations of 21 trace elements (V, Cr, Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Rb, Sr, Mo, Ag, Cd, Sn, Sb, Cs, Ba, Hg, Tl, Pb, and Bi), as well as the results of the analysis of stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes, of the various biota that make up the food web in the main stream of the Mekong Delta near Can Tho, South Vietnam. A significant trophic level-dependent increase was found in concentrations of Se, Rb, and Hg with increasing δ15N, indicating that an overall biomagnification of these elements occurred. However, the increase of Hg concentration per trophic level was lower than in previous studies. In contrast, the concentration of Mn showed an opposite trend in the food web of the Mekong Delta. In addition to these overall trends, the present study revealed that the biomagnification profiles of trace metals differ between crustaceans and fishes; concentrations of Mn, Cu, Zn, As, Sr, Mo, Ag, Cd, Sb, Cs, Ba, Tl, and Pb were significantly higher in crustaceans, whereas fishes showed higher concentrations of Cr, Rb, and Hg (trophic level determined by δ15N). The differences in the biomagnification profile between the major taxa might be attributed to differences in metal accumulation and in detoxification abilities such as possessing a metal-binding protein, e.g., metallothionein (MT).  相似文献

Concentrations of lead, cadmium, and other metals in the liver and kidneys of cattle near a lead-zinc mine in Kabwe (Zambia), which is ranked among the 10 worst polluted places on earth, were compared with other Zambian towns. Metal concentrations were measured in the liver and kidneys of 51 cattle from Kabwe and other Zambian towns. The maximum metal concentrations, expressed in mg/kg and dry weight, in the liver or kidneys were 398.4 (Cu), 252.6 (Zn), 77.81 (Cr), 19.37 (Cd), 7.57 (Ni), 1.8 (Pb), 1.04 (Co), 0.112 (Hg), and 0.05 (As). Concentrations of Pb and Cd in Kabwe cattle were higher than levels in other Zambian towns. The mean concentration of Cd exceeded benchmark values in offal destined for human consumption. Levels of Ni and Cr may also pose public health concerns. Concentrations of Pb and Cr, Pb and Cu, Cd and Zn, Cd and Hg, Zn and Cu, Cu and Co, as well as Co and Ni were positively correlated. The present study also highlighted the dangers of exposure of animals and humans to a mixture of toxic metals.  相似文献

Organ and tissue distribution of eight metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni, Cd, Hg) and their age-related changes were investigated in the chick and adult eastern great white egret,Egretta alba modesta, collected in Korea. High concentrations of the metals were found in the liver, kidney, feathers, bone, and skin; low values were found in the muscle and brain. A majority of the metal burdens in the chick and adult egrets existed in the muscle, bone, and feathers; about 50% of the Hg was in the feathers. The concentrations of Fe, Mn, Zn, and Cu in organs and tissues of the chicks characteristically changed with age, and their accumulations depended upon the metabolic turnover. In contrast, the concentrations of Pb, Ni, Cd, and Hg increased with age, suggesting that age or exposure time is a dominant factor. However, the younger stage of the downy chicks showed a rapid accumulation plateau of Pb, Ni, Cd, and Hg, and a dilution effect of these metal concentrations by increased body weight with age also was observed. Furthermore, rapid decreases of the body burden of Mn, Cu, Ni, Pb, Cd, and Hg were found in the fledgling birds, indicating that the metals were excreted via the feathers by moulting. These results indicate that consideration of the growth stage of organs and tissues is necessary for understanding the bioaccumulation processes and the toxicological criteria of the metals.  相似文献

The particle size distribution characteristics of sediments and the concentrations of heavy metals in Jiaozhou Bay were investigated in this study. The average concentrations of Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, Hg and As were 36.88, 29.60, 82.08, 77.48, 0.083, 0.048 and 11.00 mg/kg, respectively. The heavy metal concentrations were highest in the eastern sediments, followed by those at the top of the bay, and the lowest concentrations were observed in the central region. Overall, a decreasing trend from the center of the bay to the periphery was observed. Additionally, the distribution of heavy metals in sediments was not completely controlled by sediment particle size. The degree of heavy metal contamination was evaluated using the geoaccumulation index and Hakanson’s method. The results revealed that the level of heavy metal pollution in the sediments was relatively low and that the main pollution elements were Cu and Hg. In addition, the sediments are associated with various levels of potential ecological risk due to the high pollution levels of Hg and Cd.  相似文献

Concentrations of the macroelements Ca, Mg, K and Na, microelements Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn and toxic metals As, Cd, Hg and Pb were determined in oysters and mussels collected at farming sites in the northern, central and south Adriatic Sea. Mean concentrations in oysters were (mg kg−1): As 4.51, Ca 1551, Cd 1.44, Cu 53.6, Cr 0.23, Fe 45.9, Hg 0.047, K 2476, Mg 895, Mn 2.80, Na 7148, Pb 0.52, Zn 675. Mean values in mussels were (mg kg−1): As 4.71, Ca 601, Cd 0.37, Cu 1.91, Cr 0.29, Fe 49.6, Hg 0.026, K 2246, Mg 1043, Mn 2.49, Na 7992, Pb 0.58, Zn 28.8. Significant differences in the concentrations of toxic metals and elements were found in oysters and mussels among farming sites. Obtained Cd, Hg and Pb concentration in oysters and mussels were lower than the limit levels set by the European Community. However, Cd concentration exceeded the limit level of 1 mg kg−1 in oysters from all locations except Lim Bay. The estimated daily intakes (EDIs) indicate that oysters are a good source of Ca, Cu and Zn. The higher Cu and Zn concentrations than the toxicity reference values suggest a risk for consumers if larger quantities of oysters are consumed frequently.  相似文献

Representative soil samples (n = 86) of suburban areas in Tianjin (Xiqing, Dongli, Jinnan, Beichen) were evaluated for heavy metals. The results showed that the average concentration of Cr, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Pb and Hg in soil of Tianjin suburban was 101.0, 67.0, 100.6, 9.5, 0.49, 52.5 and 0.97 mg/kg, respectively. Pollution of Cr and Zn were minimal compared to the other elements while concentrations of Cd and Hg were higher than their natural background values. Spatial variations of Cd, Hg, Pb and Cu in soil were illustrated; Pollution status and comparison in the four districts were also investigated. Higher concentrations of Hg and Cd were found in soils of Beichen than others indicating that Beichen was suffering from metal contamination. Principal Component Analysis in combination with local specific environment suggested that heavy metal contamination had different origination. Wastewater and sludge irrigation, air deposition might be the most important sources. These results, especially the spatial distribution of pollutants, would be helpful to develop proper management strategies and decrease source pollution by various remediation practices in Tianjin, China.  相似文献

Concentrations of heavy metals (Ni, Cr, Co, Zn, Mn, Pb, Cd, Cu, Hg, Fe) as well as macronutrients (P, Ca, Mg) were measured in water, bottom sediments, and plants of three lakes in West Poland (southwest of Poznan). The plants collected were Nymphaea alba, Nuphar luteum, Ceratophyllum demersum, Phragmites communis, Typha latifolia, and Schoenoplectus lacustris. These plants contained elevated levels of Co, Zn, Pb, Cd, Cr, and Hg. Analyses of water and bottom sediments indicated that the lakes were polluted with Zn, Cd, Cu, and Pb and partly with Ni and Hg. Strong positive correlations were found between concentrations of Cd in water and in plants, between concentrations of Cd in bottom sediments and in plants, between concentrations of Cr in water and in plants, between concentrations of Cr in bottom sediments and in plants, and between concentrations of Fe in water and in plants, indicating the potential of plants for pollution monitoring for these metals. A negative correlation was found between biomass production and Pb and Mn content in water and Pb and Mn content in bottom sediments. Cr and Cd accumulated in plants at a higher rate from bottom sediments than from water. The accumulation rate of Fe in plant tissues was higher with an increase in Fe in water than with an increase in Fe in bottom sediments.  相似文献

Laboratory studies were conducted to evaluate Proisotoma minuta sensitivity toward selected heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn). The experimental results showed a reduction in adult survival and no reproduction at the highest concentrations of Cd and Zn. Application of Pb at all levels resulted in large numbers of progeny and no significant mortality compared to controls. EC50 reproduction values for Cd, Cu, and Zn were 125, 696, and 283 microg g(-1), respectively. No significant difference in time from the introduction of adults into the test soils to the appearance of the first-instar animals was observed between different metal treatments. The growth rate of adults decreased for all metal treatments compared to the controls. It is suggested that the accumulation of metals in P. minuta affects metabolism and results in a slower growth rate. The absence of any statistically significant effect on mortality at all concentrations of Pb may be due to greater tolerance of P. minuta to Pb than to other metals.  相似文献
