The aim of the present cross-sectional study was to examine the agreement and disagreement between a 7 d diet diary (7DD) and a self-administered machine-readable food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) asking about diet in the previous year, and to validate both methods with biomarkers of nutrient intake. The subjects were an age- and employment-grade-stratified random subsample of London-based civil servants (457 men and 403 women), aged 39-61 years, who completed both a 7DD and a FFQ at phase 3 follow-up (1991-1993) of the Whitehall II study. Mean daily intakes of dietary energy, total fat, saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, linoleic acid, total carbohydrate excluding fibre, sugars, starch, dietary fibre, protein, vitamin C, vitamin E (as alpha-tocopherol equivalents), folate, carotenes (as total beta-carotene activity), Fe, Ca, Mg, K and alcohol were measured. Serum cholesteryl ester fatty acids (CEFA), plasma alpha-tocopherol and beta-carotene were also measured as biomarkers. Estimates of mean energy intake from the two methods were similar in men, and some 10 % higher according to the FFQ in women. Compared with the 7DD, the FFQ tended to overestimate plant-derived micronutrient intakes (carotenes from FFQ v. 7DD men 2713 (SD 1455) v. 2180 (SD 1188) microg/d, women 3100 (SD 1656) v. 2221 (SD 1180) microg/d, both differences P<0.0001) and to underestimate fat intake. Against plasma beta-carotene/cholesterol, carotene intake was as well estimated by the FFQ as the 7DD (Spearman rank correlations, men 0.32 v. 0.30, women 0.27 v. 0.22, all P< or =0.0001, energy-adjusted data). Ranking of participants by other nutrient intakes tended to be of the same order according to the two dietary methods, e.g. rank correlations for CEFA linoleic acid against FFQ and 7DD estimates respectively, men 0.38 v. 0.41, women 0.53 v. 0.62, all P< or =0.0001, energy-adjusted % fat). For alpha-tocopherol there were no correlations between plasma level and estimated intakes by either dietary method. Quartile agreement for energy-adjusted nutrient intakes between the two self-report methods was in the range 37-50 % for men and 32-44 % for women, and for alcohol, 57 % in both sexes. Disagreement (misclassification into extreme quartiles of intake) was in the range 0-6 % for both sexes. The dietary methods yielded similar prevalences (about 34 %) of low energy reporters. The two methods show satisfactory agreement, together with an expected level of systematic differences, in their estimates of nutrient intake. Against the available biomarkers, the machine-readable FFQ performed well in comparison with the manually coded 7DD in this study population. For both methods, regression-based adjustment of nutrient intake to mean dietary energy intake by gender appears on balance to be the optimal approach to data presentation and analysis, in view of the complex problem of low energy reporting.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: A pilot study was carried out to evaluate validity and reproducibility of a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), which was designed to be used in a prospective cohort study in a population at high risk for esophageal cancer in northern Iran. METHODS: The FFQ was administered four times to 131 subjects, aged 35-65 years, of both sexes. Twelve 24-h dietary recalls for two consecutive days were administered monthly during 1 year and used as a reference method. The excretion of nitrogen was measured on four 24-h urine samples, and plasma levels of beta-carotene, retinol, vitamin C and alpha-tocopherol was measured from two time points. Relative validity of FFQ and 24-h diet recall was assessed by comparing nutrient intake derived from both methods with the urinary nitrogen and plasma levels of beta-carotene, retinol, vitamin C and alpha-tocopherol. RESULTS: Correlation coefficients comparing energy and nutrients intake based on the mean of the four FFQ and the mean of twelve 24-h diet recalls were 0.75 for total energy, 0.75 for carbohydrates, 0.76 for proteins and 0.65 for fat. Correlation coefficients between the FFQ-based intake and serum levels of beta-carotene, retinol, vitamin C and vitamin E/alpha-tocopherol were 0.37, 0.32, 0.35 and 0.06, respectively. Correlation coefficients between urinary nitrogen and FFQ-based protein intake ranged from 0.23 to 0.35. Intraclass correlation coefficients used to measure reproducibility of FFQ ranged from 0.66 to 0.89. CONCLUSION: We found that the FFQ provides valid and reliable measurements of habitual intake for energy and most of the nutrients studied.  相似文献

PURPOSE: The Women's Health Initiative (WHI) is the largest research program ever initiated in the United States with a focus on diet and health. Therefore, it is important to understand and document the measurement characteristics of the key dietary assessment instrument: the WHI food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). METHODS: Data are from 113 women screened for participation in the WHI in 1995. We assessed bias and precision of the FFQ by comparing the intake of 30 nutrients estimated from the FFQ with means from four 24-hour dietary recalls and a 4-day food record. RESULTS: For most nutrients, means estimated by the FFQ were within 10% of the records or recalls. Precision, defined as the correlation between the FFQ and the records and recalls, was similar to other FFQs. Energy adjusted correlation coefficients ranged from 0.2 (vitamin B12) to 0.7 (magnesium) with a mean of 0.5. The correlation for percentage energy from fat (a key measure in WHI) was 0.6. Vitamin supplement use was common. For example, almost half of total vitamin E intake was obtained from supplements. Including supplemental vitamins and minerals increased micronutrient correlation coefficients, which ranged from 0.2 (thiamin) to 0.8 (vitamin E) with a mean of 0.6. CONCLUSIONS: The WHI FFQ produced nutrient estimate, that were similar to those obtained from short-term dietary recall and recording methods. Comparison of WHI FFQ nutrient intake measures to independent and unbiased measures, such as doubly labeled water estimates of energy expenditure, are needed to help address the validity of the FFQ in this population.  相似文献

Sugar intake is a potentially important aspect of diet which has not previously been validated in the Adventist Health Study-2 (AHS-2). We sought to validate the food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) measurement of total sugars, added sugars, sucrose, and fructose against multiple 24-h dietary recalls (recalls) in AHS-2 participants. Food consumption data from a self-administered FFQ and six recalls from 904 participants were combined with nutrient profile data to estimate daily sugar intake. Validity was evaluated among all participants and by race. FFQ and recall means were compared and correlation coefficients (Spearman’s, energy-adjusted log-transformed Pearson’s, deattenuated Pearson’s) were calculated. Mean total energy, total sugars, and fructose intake were higher in the FFQ, whereas added sugars and sucrose were higher in recalls. The energy-adjusted (log-transformed) deattenuated correlations among all participants were: total sugars (r = 0.42, 95% CI 0.32–0.52), added sugars (r = 0.50, 95% CI 0.36–0.59), sucrose (r = 0.32, 95% CI 0.23–0.42), and fructose (r = 0.50, 95% CI 0.40–0.59). We observed moderate validity for added sugars and fructose and low-moderate validity for total sugars and sucrose measured by the AHS-2 FFQ in this population. Dietary sugar estimates from this FFQ may be useful in assessing possible associations of sugars intake with health outcomes.  相似文献

This study describes the validity of a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) in 93 low-income women (20-65 years), participating in a case-control study in S?o Paulo, Brazil. Two FFQ (FFQ1 and FFQ2, 12 months apart) and three 24-hour dietary recalls (24hR) were conducted between 2003 and 2004 to estimate dietary intake during the past year. The Pearson correlation coefficients (crude, energy-adjusted and de-attenuated) were used for comparisons between FFQ and 24hR. The agreement between the methods was further examined by the Bland-Altman analysis. For the assessment of long-term reliability, the energy-adjusted intra-class correlation coefficients were mostly around 0.40, but higher for vitamin A and folate (0.50-0.56). Energy-adjusted, attenuation-corrected Pearson validity correlations between FFQ and DR ranged from 0.30-0.54 for macronutrients to 0.20-0.48 for micronutrients, with higher value for calcium (0.75). There were small proportions of grossly misclassified nutrient intakes, while Bland-Altman plots indicated that the FFQ is accurate in assessing nutrient intake at a group level.  相似文献

The authors investigated the role of food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) design, including length, use of portion-size questions, and FFQ origin, in ranking subjects according to their nutrient intake. They also studied the ability of the FFQ to detect differences in energy intake between subgroups and to assess energy and protein intake. In a meta-analysis of 40 validation studies, FFQs with longer food lists (200 items) were better than shorter FFQs at ranking subjects for most nutrients; results were statistically significant for protein, energy-adjusted total fat, and energy-adjusted vitamin C. The authors found that FFQs that included standard portions had higher correlation coefficients for energy-adjusted vitamin C (0.80 vs. 0.60, p < 0.0001) and protein (0.69 vs. 0.61, p = 0.03) than FFQs with portion-size questions. However, it remained difficult from this review to analyze the effects of using portion-size questions. FFQs slightly underestimated gender differences in energy intake, although level of energy intake was underreported by 23% and level of protein intake by 17%. The authors concluded that FFQs with more items are better able to rank people according to their intake and that they are able to distinguish between subpopulations, even though they underestimated the magnitude of these differences.  相似文献

The objective of this cross-sectional study was to compare dietary reports from a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) for US Chinese women with 24-hour recall estimates. The subjects were 56 women recruited through organizations in Philadelphia's Chinese community. Spearman correlations were used to describe FFQ estimates of food servings per month and nutrient intake per day vs estimates from three 24-hour recalls over 1 month. On average, women reported at least weekly consumption of 28 of 96 FFQ food items. The three most frequently consumed were rice (38 times/month), tea (29 times/month), and dark green, leafy vegetables (18 times/month). Comparing reported frequencies of the 28 foods to 24-hour recall estimates, the median Spearman correlation was 0.36. For nutrient estimates, correlations were high (r >0.5) for dietary fiber and calcium; moderate ( r =0.25 to 0.5) for energy, saturated fat, cholesterol, carbohydrates, protein, folic acid, and iron; but poor (r <0.25) for total fat, vitamin C, vitamin A, and carotene. These findings provide some assurance of the FFQ's adequacy for describing US Chinese women's intake of commonly consumed foods and selected nutrients. They also provide a basis for further improvements to, and evaluations of, the FFQ.  相似文献

The validity of a quantitative self-administered food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was tested by comparison with 7-d weighed food records (7DWR). Subjects for the study were 24 females between 20 and 43 years of age (mean = 24 years). The main aim of the FFQ was to classify subjects according to their total fat intake.
The mean nutrient intakes estimated by the FFQ were consistently and significantly higher than the estimates by the 7DWR. Rank correlations showed that the FFQ was able to rank subjects similarly for total energy intake, fat, alcohol and fibre intake as well as for the percentage contribution of macronutrients to energy intake. Intra-class correlations showed that the two methods did not agree at the individual level for energy and macronutrient intake except alcohol. These results suggest that the FFQ was suitable for ranking the subjects according to their total fat intake but was not suitable for estimating the individual nutrient intake or average nutrient intake of this relatively small group.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to develop a food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) for Vietnamese female immigrants in Korea and to evaluate the validity of the FFQ. A total of 80 food items were selected in developing the FFQ according to consumption frequency, the contribution of energy and other nutrients, and the cooking methods based on one-day 24 hour recall (24HR) from 918 Vietnamese female immigrants between November 2006 and November 2007. The FFQ was validated by comparison with 24HR of 425 Vietnamese female immigrants between November 2008 and August 2009. The absolute nutrient intake calculated from the FFQ was higher than that estimated by 24HR for most nutrients. The correlation coefficients between 24HR and FFQ ranged from 0.10 (vitamin C) - 0.36 (energy) for crude intake, 0.05 (vitamin E) - 0.32 (calcium) for per 1000 kcal, and 0.08 (zinc) - 0.34 (calcium) for energy-adjusted, respectively. More than 70% of subjects were classified into the same or adjacent agreement groups for nutrients other than fiber, sodium, vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E, while less than 10% of subjects were classified into complete disagreement groups. We conclude that the FFQ appears to be an acceptable tool for estimating nutrient intake and dietary patterns of Vietnamese female immigrants in Korea. Future studies to validate the FFQ using various biomarkers or other dietary assessment methods are needed.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess the ability of a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to measure calcium and bone-related nutrient intakes in a rural South Dakota population. DESIGN: Intake estimates from FFQ were compared with four 24-hour recalls obtained quarterly during the preceding year. SUBJECTS: Convenience sample of 100 participants of the South Dakota Rural Bone Health Study were recruited, with 81 completing the FFQ. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Calcium and bone-related nutrient intakes were expressed as milligrams per day, milligrams per 1,000 kcal, or quartiles. STATISTICAL ANALYSES PERFORMED: Intakes by FFQ and 24-hour recalls were compared using paired t test and quartiles were formed to examine cross-classification. RESULTS: Calcium intakes from FFQ and recalls were 1,287 and 1,141 mg/day (P=0.01), but calcium per 1,000 kcal did not differ. Calcium intake by FFQ correlated with intake by recall when expressed as milligrams per day (r=0.49, P<0.001) or milligrams per 1,000 kcal (r=0.59, P<0.001). Bland-Altman graphs indicated fairly good agreement between methods. Seventy-eight percent of subjects fell into the same or within one quartile category when calcium intake was expressed as milligrams per day and 83% when expressed as milligrams per 1,000 kcal. Gross misclassification occurred in 0% to 4% of the nutrients. CONCLUSIONS: Although FFQ may not be a valid indicator of an individual's intake, it does adequately classify rural populations into quartiles of calcium and bone-related nutrient intakes, making it a useful tool for assessing dietary calcium and bone related intake in rural populations.

Few studies provide correlations between different indicators of the dietary intakes of older (>or= 65 y) black and white adults. This study compared the usual intakes of vitamin E, vitamin C, and selected carotenoids estimated by a modified Harvard food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to those estimated by multiple 24-h recalls, and to blood concentrations of components in a randomly selected sample of participants in the Chicago Health and Aging Project (CHAP). Subjects (n = 59) were interviewed to complete multiple 24-h recalls over a year's time, then completed an FFQ and subsequently provided a fasting blood specimen within 2 mo. Dietary estimates were energy-adjusted separately for men and women. Significant (P < 0.05) correlations between total (diet and supplement) FFQ estimates and serum measures of vitamin E and vitamin C were as follows: 0.49 and 0.39 for blacks, and 0.42 and 0.29 for whites, respectively. The highest correlations between serum and FFQ indicators were for dietary beta-cryptoxanthin (0.46), total alpha-tocopherol (0.46) and total beta-carotene (0.44) among whites; among blacks, the highest correlations were for dietary alpha-carotene (0.81), total alpha-tocopherol (0.53) and total beta-cryptoxanthin (0.50); all were significant (P < 0.05). Further adjustment for age, gender, BMI, and educational level minimally altered these coefficients. These findings indicate that the modified Harvard FFQ provides reasonable estimates of serum levels of vitamin E, vitamin C and beta-cryptoxanthin among CHAP participants.  相似文献

A self-administered dietary assessment questionnaire was developed for the microcomputer to identify individuals whose dietary patterns may put them at risk for cancer. It was tested among 50 adult volunteers in a New York school district. The quantitative food frequency portion of the questionnaire (FFQ), administered twice one month apart, was reproducible for calories, fat, percentage of calories from fat, cholesterol, vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, and dietary fiber (Spearman r = 0.56-0.87). To test for relative validity, individual nutrient intake calculated from each administration of the FFQ was compared with the nutrient intake calculated from seven-day food records collected one month after the second FFQ administration. Nutrient intake from the first and second FFQ compared with food record nutrient intake yielded a Spearman's correlation coefficient of 0.58 and 0.62, respectively, for percentage of kilocalories from fat. No significant difference in mean intake of percentage of calories from fat was found between the FFQ 1 and FFQ 2 or between the FFQs and the food record. However, there were significant differences between mean food record and FFQ estimates of kilocalories, fat, vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, and dietary fiber. We concluded that computerized nutrient assessment, which utilizes the subject in data entry, may be suitable for some clinical and educational uses and research studies of intake of fat as a percentage of calories among healthy adults.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To describe the data-based development of a short dietary assessment instrument, a 16-item screener; and to evaluate the performance of the screener, comparing its performance with a complete 120-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) in assessing percentage energy from fat intake. DESIGN: A subsample (n=404) of participants in the National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study, who had completed an FFQ and two 24-hour dietary recalls, also completed the fat screener. Percentage energy from fat from the screener and from the FFQ were compared with estimated true usual intake using a measurement error model. RESULTS: For men, the mean percentage energy from fat estimates for the different methods were: recalls, 30.1%, screener, 29.9%; FFQ, 30.4%. For women, the results were: recalls, 31.3%, screener, 28.4%, FFQ, 30.0%. Estimated correlations between true intake and screener were 0.64 and 0.58 for men and women, respectively, and between true intake and FFQ were 0.67 for men and 0.72 for women. Estimated attenuation coefficients for the screener were 1.29 (men) and 0.98 (women) and for the FFQ were 0.56 (men) and 0.57 (women). CONCLUSIONS: The percentage energy from fat screener, when used in conjunction with external reference data, may be useful to compare mean intakes of fat for different population subgroups, and to examine relationships between fat intake and other factors.  相似文献

Periconceptional folate and folic acid intake prevents orofacial clefts (OFC) in the offspring. It has been suggested that other nutrients also play a role. We investigated the preconceptional intake of macronutrients (protein, fat, carbohydrate, fiber, and cholesterol), vitamins (vitamin A, retinol, beta-carotene, ascorbic acid, and alpha-tocopherol), minerals (calcium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium, and zinc) and food groups in mothers of OFC children and controls. At approximately 14 mo after the index pregnancy, 206 mothers of a child with a nonsyndromic OFC and 203 control mothers completed a FFQ on current food intake and a general questionnaire. After exclusion of pregnant and lactating mothers, mothers who reported a change in diet compared with the preconceptional period, and those for whom periconceptional folic acid supplement use was unclear, 182 OFC mothers and 173 control mothers were evaluated. Macronutrient, vitamin, mineral, and food group intakes were compared. After adjustment for energy, quintiles of dietary nutrient intake and odds ratios with 95% CI were calculated. The preconceptional intake of all macronutrients, vitamins, minerals, and food groups with the exception of milk (products), potatoes, pies/cookies were lower in OFC mothers than in controls. The energy-adjusted intakes of vegetable protein, fiber, beta-carotene, ascorbic acid, alpha-tocopherol, iron, and magnesium were significantly lower in cases compared with controls. Increasing intakes of vegetable protein, fiber, ascorbic acid, iron, and magnesium decreased OFC risk. In conclusion, a higher preconceptional intake of nutrients predominantly present in fruits and vegetables reduces the risk of offspring affected by OFC.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Reliable data about the nutrient intake of elderly noninstitutionalized women in Switzerland is lacking. The aim of this study was to assess the energy and nutrient intake in this specific population. SUBJECTS: The 401 subjects were randomly selected women of mean age of 80.4 years (range 75-87) recruited from the Swiss SEMOF (Swiss Evaluation of the Methods of Measurement of Osteoporotic Fracture Risk) cohort study. A validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was submitted to the 401 subjects to assess dietary intake. RESULTS: The FFQ showed a mean daily energy intake of 1544 kcal (+/-447.7). Protein intake was 65.2 g (+/-19.9), that is 1.03 g kg(-1) body weight per day. The mean daily intake for energy, fat, carbohydrate, calcium, magnesium, vitamin C, D and E were below the RNI. However, protein, phosphorus, potassium, iron and vitamin B6 were above the RNI. CONCLUSION: The mean nutrient intake of these free living Swiss elderly women was low compared with standards. Energy dense foods rich in carbohydrate, magnesium, calcium, vitamin D and E as well as regular sunshine exposure is recommended in order to optimise dietary intake.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the validity and reliability of a short (10-item) calcium food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) for use with middle-school-aged (11 to 14 years of age) children. DESIGN: The calcium FFQ was completed twice, with 1 week between administrations. Three 24-hour dietary recalls were collected from each participant after the second administration of the calcium FFQ. SUBJECTS/SETTING: Students in an ethnically diverse middle school in Minneapolis, MN (n=248). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Calcium intake estimates from the calcium FFQ and dietary recalls. STATISTICAL ANALYSES: Correlations between calcium intake estimates from the first and second questionnaire administrations of the calcium FFQ were calculated and paired t tests were conducted to compare mean calcium intake estimates from each questionnaire administration. Mean intake estimates from the calcium FFQ and the dietary recalls were compared. Also, correlations between intake estimates from the calcium FFQ and the recalls were calculated. RESULTS: Correlation between calcium intake estimates derived from the first and second administration of the calcium FFQ was 0.74. Mean calcium intake estimates from the calcium FFQ and the average of the three dietary recalls were 856 mg/day and 993 mg/day, respectively (P<0.001). The correlation between calcium intake estimates derived from the calcium FFQ and the average of the recalls was 0.43. CONCLUSIONS: Reliability of the FFQ was found to be good while validity was weaker, with calcium intake from the calcium FFQ moderately associated with estimates from dietary recalls. Where a brief instrument for assessing calcium intake of middle-school-aged children is needed, the calcium FFQ evaluated in this study may be useful.  相似文献

Our objective was to assess the reproducibility and accuracy of fat and of fruit and vegetable items on a 43-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) previously self-administered by students at 16 US medical schools. Five in-person, 24-hour recalls were administered between two FFQ administrations to 88 medical students. Reported fat intake decreased from the first (34.7%) to the second (33.1%) FFQ administration ( P <.001); the reproducibility correlation was r =0.63. Fat intake from recalls (28.4%) was lower than that from the FFQ (33.8%, P <.001). The Pearson correlation was r =0.36. Fruit and vegetable servings per day were 3.9 and 3.7 from the first and second FFQ, respectively ( P =.5); the reproducibility correlation was r =0.77. Fruit and vegetable servings were marginally higher from recalls (4.3) than from the FFQ (3.8, P =.06). The Pearson correlation for fruit and vegetable servings was r =0.50. This brief FFQ provides acceptably reproducible and valid estimates of fruit and vegetable servings per day among most groups of medical students, but overestimates fat as a percentage of energy intake.  相似文献

Folate, vitamin B12, iron, and zinc are particularly important nutrients for women of childbearing age. We tested the hypothesis that an electronic, 235-item, semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) is a valid measure of dietary intake when compared with repeat dietary 24-hour recalls. Biomarkers of folate, vitamin B12, iron, and zinc were determined because their measurement errors are unrelated to errors in dietary questionnaires. Female adults (N = 256) aged 18 to 35 years completed the FFQ, and a representative subset (n = 53) completed repeat dietary 24-hour recalls. The FFQ estimates (mean ± SD) were 315 ± 132 μg for folate, 3.1 ± 2.1 μg for vitamin B12, 15.4 ± 5.6 mg for iron, and 15.1 ± 6.4 mg for zinc. The percentage of women classified within the same ±1 quartile for energy intake by the 2 methods was 77.3%. There was moderate agreement between the 2 dietary methods, and no systematic bias was noted for energy, folate, vitamin B12, and zinc. The deattenuated energy-adjusted correlation coefficients ranged from 0.41 (dietary folate equivalents) to 0.60 (folate). Significant correlations between biomarker and nutrient intakes were found for folate (r = 0.37, P < .01) and vitamin B12 (r = 0.27, P < .01). The electronic FFQ developed in the present study is a relatively valid tool that was able to adequately assess and rank individuals according to their nutrient intakes.  相似文献
