IntroductionThis study evaluates histologically the efficacy of 4 revascularization protocols in necrotic-infected immature dog teeth with apical periodontitis (AP).MethodsForty double-rooted immature premolar teeth from 4 female Beagle dogs aged 5 months were used. Four teeth were left untouched as negative controls; the other 36 teeth were infected to develop pulp necrosis and AP. Four teeth were left untreated and assigned to the positive control group. The last 28 teeth were randomly assigned into four experimental groups of 8 teeth, each one treated with a different treatment protocol: A1, sodium hypochlorite (SH) + blood clot (BC); A2, SH + platelet-rich plasma (PRP); B1, SH + modified tri-antibiotic paste (mTAP) + BC; B2, SH + mTAP + PRP. The animals were sacrificed, histologic sections were prepared and three parameters were assessed: (1) presence or absence of new hard tissue on the internal root dentinal walls, (2) presence or absence of continued apical closure, and (3) presence or absence of vital tissue within the canal space.ResultsSignificant differences (p < 0.05) between the four experimental groups were evident in the percentage of teeth showing histological apical closure (34.5%) and vital tissue within the canal space (68.8%). Group B2 showed the maximal improvement in the three variables assessed (p < 0.05). Group A1 showed the minimum percentages in the three parameters assessed (p < 0.05).ConclusionsThese results suggest that an intracanal dressing of mTAP, and the use of PRP as scaffold, improves the success rate of the revascularization procedure.  相似文献

ObjectivesThe aim of this study is to assess the morphology, the prevalence and the topography of the apical constriction (AC) through a tridimensional analysis and compare the results with the available data reported in the literature.Materials and methods15 teeth were selected. The teeth were intact and atraumatically extracted, without signs of radicular resorption or previous root canal treatments. Each tooth was scanned with the micro-computed tomography at a resolution of 9 μm. Through computer reconstruction the roots were made transparent, in order to reveal the endodontic anatomy; two calibrated examiners assessed the prevalence and the morphology of the AC on two different projections for each tooth. The AC was classified as present (single, multiple, tapered) or absent (flaring, parallel, apical delta). Inter-rater agreement was computed applying Cohen's kappa. The distance between the AC and the apical foramen was determined by means of a digital ruler.Results and conclusion52.6% of the observed ACs was ambiguous (present on one projection but not on the other one). Only 21.0% of the canals showed a tridimensional AC (present on both projections). Inter-rater agreement was very good (k = 0.839). The morphology, from greater to least, was flaring (25%), single (21.1%), parallel (21.1%), tapered (19.7%), apical delta (10.5%) and multiple (2.6%). Inter-rater agreement was again very good (kappa = 0.869). Root canal anatomy as described in the literature is more conceptual than real. The presence of AC appears to be an exception rather than a canon.  相似文献

AimAim of this study was to compare the removal of smear layer and organic debris within the tooth canal among conventional needle irrigation, EndoVac and Endoactivator.MethodologyEighty single-rooted extracted human teeth were prepared with rotary NiTi instrumentation and randomly separated into 4 groups. Twenty teeth were used as positive control (Group 1), irrigated with only saline. Teeth assigned to Group 2 (n = 20) received irrigation with a conventional syringe and a 30-gauge needle (NaviTip, Ultradent, South Jordan, UT); samples in Group 3 (n = 20) were rinsed with an irrigation device based on apical negative pressure (EndoVac, Discus Dental, Culver City, CA) and teeth in Group 4 (n = 20) were treated with a sonic irrigation system (EndoActivator, Dentsply Tulsa Dental, Tulsa, OK, USA). The amount of residual smear layer and debris was evaluated under a scanning electron microscope, and a semi-quantitative score was assigned to each root at the coronal, middle and apical thirds; the chi-square test was used to compare the results of the S.E.M. analysis.ResultsEndoActivator performed the best cleansing for both smear layer and organic debris in all root canal thirds, followed by EndoVac and conventional irrigation (p > 0.001). EndoVac and conventional irrigation showed better cleaning in the coronal area, whereas EndoActivator performed an homogeneous cleansing at all levels.ConclusionsThe EndoVac system and the EndoActivator system demonstrated significantly more efficacy in cleansing root canal walls than conventional needle irrigation.  相似文献

AIM: To investigate the prevalence of apical periodontitis and the quality of root canal treatment in an adult Turkish population who visited a university dental clinic. SUMMARY: The periapical status of 8863 teeth belonging to 375 patients was evaluated by two pre-calibrated observers from panoramic radiographs. The presence of apical periodontitis, and the prevalence and quality of root fillings were recorded. The relationship between the radiographic quality of root fillings and apical periodontitis was examined by chi-squared statistical-analysis. Of 8863 teeth, 470 (5.3%) had undergone root canal treatment. Forty-seven per cent of all the subjects had at least one root-filled tooth. Periapical radiolucencies were visible on 4.2% of teeth examined, with 53.5% of root-filled teeth presenting apical periodontitis. Ninety-one per cent of root-filled teeth with periapical pathosis were determined to have inadequate root fillings. A statistically significant correlation was found between the quality of root fillings and the presence of apical periodontitis (P < 0.05). KEY LEARNING POINTS: The radiographic quality of root fillings correlated with periapical radiographic signs of pathosis in a selected population of Turkish adults. There is a need to improve the standards of root canal treatment in the study population.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo determine the matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) levels in root-canal exudates from teeth undergoing root-canal treatment.Material and methodsThe root-canal exudates from six teeth with normal pulp and periradicular tissues that required intentional root canal treatment for prosthodontic reasons and from twelve teeth with pulp necrosis and asymptomatic apical periodontitis (AAP) were sampled with paper points for bacterial culture and aspirated for the detection of proMMP-2 and active MMP-2 by gelatin zymography and the quantification of MMP-2 levels by ELISA.ResultsBy gelatin zymography, both proMMP-2 and active MMP-2 were detected in the first collection of root-canal exudates from teeth with pulp necrosis and AAP, but not from teeth with normal pulp, and their levels gradually decreased and disappeared at the last collection. Consistently, ELISA demonstrated a significant decrease in MMP-2 levels in the root-canal exudates of teeth with pulp necrosis and AAP following root canal procedures (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the MMP-2 levels were significantly lower in the negative bacterial culture than those in the positive bacterial culture (p < 0.001).ConclusionsThe levels of MMP-2 in root-canal exudates from teeth with pulp necrosis and AAP were gradually reduced during root canal procedures. Future studies are required to determine if MMP-2 levels may be used as a biomolecule for the healing of apical lesions, similar to the clinical application of MMP-8 as a biomarker.  相似文献

AimTo evaluate the efficacy of an ethanolic Salvadora persica extract in removing the smear layer following a root canal procedure.MethodsSixty extracted, single-rooted human teeth were cleaned, shaped, and divided into four groups. Experimental groups 1 (n = 20) and 2 (n = 20) were irrigated with 1 mg/ml and 5 mg/ml of S. persica, respectively. The positive controls (n = 10) were irrigated with 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), while the negative controls (n = 10) were irrigated with saline. Approximately 5 ml of the irrigating solution was delivered into the root canals for 5 min, and the final rinse was performed with 5 ml of 1% sodium hypochlorite. Scanning electron microscopy was used to evaluate the endodontic smear layer removal at the coronal, middle, and apical thirds of the specimens.ResultsA significant difference in smear layer removal between groups 1 and 2 at the coronal and middle thirds of the canal was observed, and no significant difference was seen between group 2 and the positive control at the coronal third. At the apical third, both concentrations of S. persica had similar effects and were less effective than the positive control in removing the smear layer.ConclusionThe 5 mg/ml S. persica solution was significantly more effective than the 1 mg/ml solution. In addition, the 5 mg/ml S. persica solution was as effective as 17% EDTA in removing the smear layer from the coronal third of the canal wall.  相似文献

This study aimed to examine the prevalence of molar roots protruding into the maxillary sinus and to determine the panoramic radiographic signs as correlated with cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). CBCT images of 354 roots were assessed and classified into three types, according to the relationship between the root and maxillary sinus. The prevalence of root protrusion into the maxillary sinus was calculated then the panoramic images assessed. After excluding some unidentified roots on the panoramic images, 200 were investigated for panoramic signs, including (i) projection of the root apex into the sinus cavity, (ii) interruption of the maxillary sinus floor’s cortex, (iii) absence of periodontal ligament space, (iv) darkening of the involved root region, and (v) upward curving of the sinus floor. The respective correlation between the panoramic signs and CBCT types was assessed. Forty-six percent of roots showed protrusion into the sinus with the palatal root of the first molar having the greatest prevalence (33/200 roots). The panoramic signs ‘projection of the root apex in the sinus cavity’ and ‘darkening of the involved root apical region’ both strongly indicated root protrusion into the maxillary sinus (P < 0.05).  相似文献

PurposeThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Morinda Citrifolia Juice (MCJ) on smear layer removal and microhardness value of root canal dentin in compared with various endodontic irrigants.Material and methodsEighty-four single-rooted human teeth were prepared to apical size of #35. Since decoronation, samples were divided into seven groups of 12 in each (n = 12). Specimens were finally irrigated by either 1: 2.5% NaOCl, 2: 6% MCJ, followed by a final flush of 17% ethylene diaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), 3: 6% MCJ, 4: 2.5% NaOCl then17% EDTA, 5: MTAD, 6: 2% chlorhexidine (CHX), and 7: saline. After irrigation, all samples were subjected to Vickers microhardness test at 100 and 500-μm depths and then were examined under scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and ImageJ program was used to calculate open dentinal tubules. One way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey tests were used to reveal any significant differences among and between groups respectively.ResultsThe microhardness values at 100 μm and 500 μm for MTAD were significantly lower than for NaOCl + EDTA and MCJ + EDTA groups (p < 0.05). MCJ + EDTA, NaOCl + EDTA, and MTAD protocol significantly removed smear layer in compared with control group (p < 0.05), with no significant differences among these three groups.ConclusionsIt was concluded that 6% MCJ followed by a final flush of 17% EDTA can be regarded as an effective solution on smear layer removal without any adverse influence on microhardness property of root canal dentin.  相似文献

AimTo assess by micro-computed tomography (μCT) the quality of fillings in canals shaped with Reciproc considering the effects of filling technique and post insertion.MethodologyThe canals of 60 single-rooted teeth were instrumented with Reciproc R40 and randomly assigned to four groups (n = 15): G1, single point; G2, as G1 + DT Light Post; G3, continuous wave of condensation; G4, as G3 + DT Light Post. The filling voids were quantified by μCT. Data were statistically analysed by non-parametric test (p < 0.05).ResultsFilling greater than 96% of the entire canal volume was observed in all groups. The volume of internal voids was greater in G3 than in G4 (p < 0.005).ConclusionsOur findings support the use of simplified techniques of canal shaping, filling with matching taper points and post cementation.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo study the correlation between the position of the inferior dental (ID) nerve canal and the angulation of impacted mandibular third molars using dental cone beam computed tomography (CBCT).Materials and methodsThe study considered 100 impactions in 85 patients (60 males, 25 females), for whom an initial panoramic radiographic assessment had revealed that the ID canal and the lower 3rd molar were in close proximity. A CBCT scan of each patient was carried out to assess how the ID nerve canal position influenced the class and position of impaction, angulation of impaction, and bone contact.ResultsClass I position B impactions were found in the majority of cases, where the position of the ID canal was approximate to the lingual plate and inferior to the 3rd molar (85.7%). The results were statistically significant (p = 0.001). 96% of the ID canals showed bone contact. Of these, 77.1% of ID canals exhibited lingual bone contact, inferior to impaction. The results were statistically significant (p = 0.001). Horizontally angulated impactions were most common in the mandible, and significantly associated with lingual and inferior positioning of the ID canal (76.2%).ConclusionsOur sample population most commonly exhibited horizontally angulated class I position B impactions of the mandible. The position of the ID canal significantly influenced the type of impaction and bone contact.  相似文献

This study investigated the exact intra-alveolar aetiology of a panoramic high-risk sign, darkening of the third molar roots. 83 mandibular third molar surgical removals demonstrating dark bands on the third molar roots in preoperative radiographs were included in this prospective study. Exposure of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN), the root morphology of the third molar (e.g. groove or hook) and the integrity of the mandibular canal or lingual cortical wall were observed. Differences between single (increased radiolucency alone) and multiple darkening cases (increased radiolucency with accompanying ‘high risk’ signs) and between IAN exposure and groove formation were analysed. In 38 cases (45.8%), the IAN was visible during the operation. Groove was present in 37.4% of cases. 26.5% of the cases showed lingual cortical thinning, while specious root conformation explained the formation of darkening on the radiographic images of an additional 9.6% of the cases. IAN exposure (P < 0.001) and groove formation (P < 0.001) were significantly more frequent in multiple darkening cases than in single darkening cases. According to these findings, darkening of the third molar roots is more often the result of fenestration of the inferior alveolar canal wall or groove formation of the root than lingual cortical thinning.  相似文献

ObjectivesTo assess the release and apical extrusion of toxic volatile compounds and disinfection by-products during instrumentation and irrigation of artificially infected root canal specimens, with sodium hypochlorite and ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid.MethodsForty-two single-rooted human teeth were decoronated to obtain 15 mm-long root specimens and working length was determined 1 mm short of root apex. All specimens were initially preflared, to create sufficient conical space for the development of a nutrient-stressed multispecies biofilm. The specimens were randomly assigned into three groups [Group 1; no endodontic intervention, Group 2; instrumentation with rotary files and irrigation with sterile saline, Group 3; instrumentation with rotary files and irrigation with 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and 17% ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA)]. A customised experimental model apparatus was fabricated for each specimen. The apical root third was inserted in a glass vial filled with sterile ultrapure water, to simulate high-compliance periradicular space. The reaction products of the aliquots obtained from the glass vials were analysed in real time, by selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS) in triplicates. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with post hoc Tukey tests were used for data analysis. The level of statistical significance was set at P < 0.05.ResultsThe group of teeth that were not subjected to endodontic intervention did not show any volatile compounds (VOCs) or disinfection by products (DBPs) whilst instrumentation and irrigation of root canals (Groups 2 and 3) resulted in the apical extrusion of VOCs and DBPs. In Group 3, the aliquots obtained from periradicular space released high concentrations of methanol, propanol, ammonia, chloroform, together with unexpected higher levels of formaldehyde, which were statistically significant compared to Group 2 (P < 0.05).SignificanceThe mechanical preparation and irrigation of artificially infected root canals with rotary files, 2.5% NaOCl and 17% EDTA resulted in the formation of toxic VOCs and DBPs in a water-closed periradicular space. The chemical interaction of NaOCl and EDTA resulted in the generation of high concentrations of formaldehyde. The formation of chloroform and formaldehyde indicate that risk assessment of the potential hazards to health should be carried out.  相似文献

AimThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of gravity and capillarity on penetration of human salivary bacteria into the entire length of obturated root canals, and to demonstrate the dye penetration configuration.Materials and methodsFifty single-rooted premolars were decoronated, prepared to a standardized length of 15 mm, instrumented, and randomly divided into two groups (A and B) of 25 teeth each. Each group consisted of experimental (15 samples) and negative and positive controls (five samples each). The experimental groups were obturated with gutta-percha and root canal sealer. The positive control groups were obturated with a single cone of gutta-percha and root canal sealer. The outer surfaces (except for the apical 2 mm) were covered with two layers of nail varnish. An apparatus containing Brain Heart Infusion broth was designed, in which the teeth were placed. The samples in Group A were placed upside down, while Group B was placed normally. The coronal portions of the samples were placed in contact with fresh saliva. The number of days required for bacteria to penetrate the entire length of canals was determined. The samples were then immersed in India ink to determine the dye penetration configuration. Data were analyzed using Student’s t-test.ResultsThe extent of dye penetration was significantly greater in Group B compared to Group A, and they were in a pattern rather than linear form.ConclusionsGravity and capillarity insignificantly affected bacterial leakage. Although gravity and capillarity did not affect bacterial penetration when applied to the coronal access of endodontically treated teeth, it seems that they can promote penetration of India ink into the canal after the bacterial test on the same tooth.  相似文献

ObjectiveThis study sought to assess the relationship between facial gingival and bone dimensions in maxillary anterior teeth region using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT).DesignThis study assessed 621 maxillary anterior teeth in 144 patients. In the sagittal plane, facial bone thickness (BT) and gingival thickness (GT) were measured at the crestal level and at 2, 4 and 6 mm apical to the cementoenamel junction (CEJ). The dentogingival complex (DGC) dimensions and the distance from the CEJ to bone crest were also measured on CBCT scans. To determine the gingival biotype, GT at 2 mm apical to the gingival margin was measured and GT <1.5 mm was categorized as thin while GT ≥1.5 mm was categorized as thick. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 21 via repeated measures ANOVA and the Cochrane’s Q, chi-square and independent samples t-tests.ResultsThe BT around the maxillary central and lateral incisors and canine teeth at 4 and 6 mm apical to the CEJ was significantly different in thick and thin gingival biotypes (P < 0.05). The mean GT at 2 and 4 mm apical to the CEJ was significantly different around central and lateral incisors (P < 0.05). Thickness of crestal bone was significantly different between the two gingival biotypes around central and lateral incisors (P < 0.05).ConclusionThe two gingival biotypes had significantly different mean BT; different biotypes and their relationship to BT varied around anterior maxillary teeth.  相似文献

AIM: To estimate the prevalence of teeth with apical periodontitis (AP) and technically failed root fillings in an adult Belarusian population. METHODOLOGY: Panoramic radiographs of all 1423 patients over 15 years of age not seeking emergency dental care, and attending the Dental School of the Belarusian Medical University for the first time during the period from 1 January to 31 December 2001 were examined. The quality of root fillings was scored according to criteria of length proposed by De Moor et al. [International Endodontic Journal 33 (2000) 113] and the periapical status of all teeth (except third molars) was categorized on the basis of presence or absence of radiographic signs of AP. The data were analysed using the chi-square test and odds ratio. RESULTS: Radiographs indicated that 8632 teeth (22% in the maxilla; 21% in the mandible) were missing leaving a total of 31,212 teeth to be assessed. Twenty per cent of the teeth had some filling material in the root canal(s). AP was found in 1141 subjects (80%) and 12% of the teeth. AP was more frequently associated with molar teeth (23%) than premolar (14%), canine (4%) and incisor teeth (6%). AP was diagnosed in 45% of root filled teeth, the remaining cases with AP had not been root filled. Statistical analysis showed that the probability of radiological detection of AP in root filled teeth was 25-fold higher than when the root canals had not been filled (chi2 = 8636.04, P < or = 0.001, odds ratio with 95% confidence intervals: 23.01 < 25.17 < 27.45). Periapical radiolucencies with adequately filled root canals occurred significantly less often than with teeth in which the root canal was filled more than 2 mm from radiographic apex or when filling material was extruded through the apex. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of AP in all age groups in Belarus was higher than in other populations. The probability of AP increased significantly after root canal treatment and was closely correlated with the quality of the root filling.  相似文献

ObjectivesThis study examined débridement efficacy as a result of wall shear stresses created by different irrigant delivery/agitation techniques in an inaccessible recess of a curved root canal model.MethodsA reusable, curved canal cavity containing a simulated canal fin was milled into mirrored titanium blocks. Calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) paste was used as debris and loaded into the canal fin. The titanium blocks were bolted together to provide a fluid-tight seal. Sodium hypochlorite was delivered at a previously-determined flow rate of 1 mL/min that produced either negligible or no irrigant extrusion pressure into the periapex for all the techniques examined. Nine irrigation delivery/agitation techniques were examined: NaviTip passive irrigation control, Max-i-Probe® side-vented needle passive irrigation, manual dynamic agitation (MDA) using non-fitting and well-fitting gutta-percha points, EndoActivator™ sonic agitation with medium and large points, VPro™ EndoSafe™ irrigation system, VPro™ StreamClean™ continuous ultrasonic irrigation and EndoVac apical negative pressure irrigation. Débridement efficacies were analysed with Kruskal–Wallis ANOVA and Dunn's multiple comparisons tests (α = 0.05).ResultsEndoVac was the only technique that removed more than 99% calcium hydroxide debris from the canal fin at the predefined flow rate. This group was significantly different (p < 0.05) from the other groups that exhibited incomplete Ca(OH)2 removal.ConclusionsThe ability of the EndoVac system to significantly clean more debris from a mechanically inaccessible recess of the model curved root canal may be caused by robust bubble formation during irrigant delivery, creating higher wall shear stresses by a two-phase air–liquid flow phenomenon that is well known in other industrial débridement systems.  相似文献

ObjectiveThe aim of the present study was to evaluate the penetration characteristics of devitalized and vital E. faecalis cells into root dentinal tubules.DesignThirteen root canals were incubated with devitalized (4 days, 7 days, 14 days, 28 days) and vital (28 days) E. faecalis strains (streptomycin-resistant strains) after root canal enlargement (size 80, taper 0.02) with 3 % NaOCl solution. The smear layer was intentionally removed with 20 % EDTA before inoculation. Samples were processed for analysis by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and DAPI (4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole) staining. DAPI was conducted for fluorescence microscopic visualization of the bacterial penetration into dentinal tubules. The penetration depth was calculated with the measurement tool of the Axio Vision program (Zeiss, Jena, Germany).ResultsDevitalized E. faecalis strains were able to penetrate into dentinal tubules of the root canal. Apikal penetration depths of the devitalized cells were 100.67 μm ± 26.54 μm after 7 days, 230.67 μm ± 111.5 μm after 14 days and 266.5 μm ± 92.63 μm after 28 days of incubation. The total number and penetration depth of E. faecalis cells was lower compared to a vital suspension of E. faecalis (1002.45 μm) after 28 days. It was noted that bacterial penetration was not common to all of the dentinal tubules in the vital E. faecalis control and especially in the devitalized control.ConclusionsIncreased exposure times of devitalized bacteria into root canals lead to an increased number of penetrated dentinal tubules as well as to a deeper penetration.  相似文献

This article presents an orthognathic treatment case after severe apical root resorption of maxillary anterior teeth using anterior segmental osteotomy.This case involved a 20-year-old female with the chief complaint of maxillary protruding and irregularly aligned mandibular anterior teeth. Her medical history showed no allergies or medical problems. The overbite was +3.0 mm, and the overjet +3.0 mm. After extraction of the four first premolars, a multi-bracket treatment was started. A severe root resorption of the maxillary anterior teeth was found 12 months after active treatment. The maxillary anterior segmental osteotomy was chosen as the compensatory treatment. The total treatment period was 2 years and 7 months. The post-retention panoramic radiograph showed no developmental root resorption.  相似文献

ObjectivesDigital radiography has become an integral part of dentistry. Digital radiography does not require film or dark rooms, reduces X-ray doses, and instantly generates images. The aim of our study was to compare the subjective image quality of two digital dental radiographic systems with conventional dental film.Materials & methodsA direct digital (DD) ‘Digital’ system by Sirona, a semi-direct (SD) digital system by Vista-scan, and Kodak ‘E’ speed dental X-ray films were selected for the study. Endodontically-treated extracted teeth (n = 25) were used in the study. Details of enamel, dentin, dentino-enamel junction, root canal filling (gutta percha), and simulated apical pathology were investigated with the three radiographic systems. The data were subjected to statistical analyzes to reveal differences in subjective image quality.ResultsConventional dental X-ray film was superior to the digital systems. For digital systems, DD imaging was superior to SD imaging.ConclusionConventional film yielded superior image quality that was statistically significant in almost all aspects of comparison. Conventional film was followed in image quality by DD, and SD provided the lowest quality images. Conventional film is still considered the gold standard to diagnose diseases affecting the jawbone.RecommendationsImproved software and hardware for digital imaging systems are now available and these improvements may now yield images that are comparable in quality to conventional film. IntroductionThis study aimed to summarize data on apical periodontitis (AP) and nonsurgical root canal treatment (NSRCT) prevalence and risk factors related to age, gender, and quality of restorative and endodontic treatment in the general population from cross-sectional studies published between 2012 and 2020.MethodsAn electronic search was performed in the following databases: Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed. The conducted literature search covered studies published between 2012 and 2020, without restrictions on language. The STROBE and NOS tools were used for quality assessment of the included studies.ResultsSixteen articles were included in the review. In total, 200,041 teeth were examined. On average, 6.3% of teeth had AP, and 7.4% had NSRCT. Forty-one percent of RCT teeth had AP, and 3.5% of untreated teeth had AP. Female patients were less prone to AP in endodontically treated teeth only, compared with male patients (P < .001). Variable stratification of age subgroups among included studies prevented us from conducting a meta-analysis. An increase in AP frequency was found in teeth with inadequate restorative and endodontic treatment (P < .001 and P < .001, respectively). Because of high heterogeneity, these results should be taken with caution.ConclusionsThere is an increased AP prevalence in the adult general population compared with data from 2012 (6.3% versus 5.4%) in both endodontically treated (41.3% versus 35.9%) and untreated teeth (3.5% versus 2.1%). In addition, AP developed less frequently in female patients with endodontically treated teeth and in teeth with inadequate compared with adequate restorative and endodontic treatment.  相似文献
