Nurses have been successfully performing flexible sigmoidoscopy since the early 1970s. There are numerous studies, in both medical and nursing literature, indicating that nurses can perform this traditional physician role safely and efficiently. Both the American Society of Gastroenterology Endoscopists (ASGE) and Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA) have endorsed this practice. Programs appropriate for training the nurse endoscopist, however, have not been defined. Although similarities exist in the literature about how nurses and other nonphysician endoscopists are trained, there are also many discrepancies. If nurses are to take a proactive stance in overseeing nursing practice, objective criteria and clinical competencies need to be established. This is the next step in establishing standard acceptance by the medical community and public.  相似文献

Student nurses associations (SNAs) assist in developing tomorrow's nurse leaders. In this article, executive board members of an SNA in a traditional baccalaureate nursing program at a public regional university recounted common themes in their participation in an SNA. These broad themes included leadership, mentorship and communication, all which foster professional development through the acquisition of specific knowledge, skills and experiences.  相似文献

The nurse recruitment program at our private children's hospital provides an opportunity for family members of employees who are interested in becoming a nurse to learn more about pediatric nursing. This article describes our 5-hour recruitment program that includes didactic information, a hospital tour, and clinical experience through "nurse shadowing." Participants, presenters, and nurse preceptors have favorably evaluated this program. Programs like this can be used by other institutions to encourage and maintain interest in nursing and the health care professions.  相似文献

TOPIC. Horizontal violence among nurses. PURPOSE. To see if horizontal violence in the workplace exists in nursing. If it does, what is its relationship to patient care? SOURCES OF INFORMATION. This literature review was conducted using research articles published in 2003 and 2004. The articles were searched for in the electronic database, CINAHL. Both Ovid and EBSCO vendors were used. CONCLUSIONS. It is clear that horizontal violence exists in nursing today. It affects nursing in all areas. When tension is elevated in patient care areas, nursing staff are not likely to perform at their best and the result is often poor patient care.  相似文献

目的探讨基于问题的学习(PBL)应用于本科护理专业护士人文修养课程中的效果。方法在2007级184名护理本科生护士人文修养课程中进行PBL教学,采用自编的教学调查问卷对其进行调查。结果 182名(98.9%)学生愿意参加PBL教学,80名(43.5%)学生认为自己与组员合作很好,60名(32.6%)学生认为自己能很好地解决问题,105名(57.1%)学生经常与组员讨论。结论在护士人文修养课程中采用PBL教学,有利于激发学生的学习兴趣,提高学生的团队协作能力、解决问题能力和沟通交流能力。  相似文献

This article examines sexuality in the institutionalized elderly. It also reviews current research on nursing home staff members and their perceptions of sexuality in nursing homes. It is estimated that on any one day, 8.9 million to 16 million employees will be working under the influence of drugs, and thus performing at only 67% of capacity. There are three possible phases of a drug testing program: pre-employment drug screening; testing for probable cause following unexplained behavior or events; and random sample testing to detect use of controlled substances by employees on the job. With the high cost and potential for error involved, it is imperative to have a strategy or set of guidelines for instituting a drug testing program so that it protects the employee's rights and company's liability concerns. Employers need to make confidential Employee Assistance Programs available to all employees.  相似文献

As a new nurse manager of a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) 3 years ago, this author was faced with a nursing vacancy rate of 50%, with half of the unit's beds closed. In the time elapsed, all nursing positions were filled, allowing full use of all beds. 目的探讨实施住院总护士岗位制度的效果,以更好地保障晚夜间护理安全和质量,帮助年轻护士提高业务水平及应急能力。方法制定住院总护士岗位管理制度,选拔临床护理骨干,履行岗位职责。结果实施临床住院总护士岗位制度10个月以来,为各临床科室解决各种护理事件76起;住院总护士在管理能力、协调沟通能力、专业技术等方面都得到显著提高。结论临床住院总护士岗位制度的实施,为现有晚夜班护理技术力量的某些薄弱环节提供了有效的补充,进一步保障了晚夜间护理安全,提升了医院综合满意度。  相似文献

The purposes of the study were: (1) to determine the relationship between selected demographic characteristics of nurse educators and research productivity; (2) to identify barriers to faculty research; (3) to examine the support being provided by educational institutions for faculty research; and (4) to determine the use of research productivity in the evaluation of faculty members for tenure, promotion and salary increase. Research productivity was defined as: (1) the number of past research studies conducted in relation to degree requirements, (2) the number of past research studies conducted which were not in connection with degree requirements, (3) the number of research studies that have been published, and (4) the number of ongoing research studies. The study population was composed of nurse educators teaching in institutions granting a diploma, associate degree, baccalaureate degree or higher degree in nursing. A systematic random sample of 500 names was chosen from nurse educators who were members of the American Nurses' Association. The major findings of the study were: (1) only 25% of the sample indicated current involvement in research; (2) nurse educators holding doctorates are the most productive researchers; (3) nurse educators who have taught more than 20 years reported the smallest percentage of ongoing research studies; (4) the majority of the current research is being conducted by faculty teaching in schools which grant graduate degrees; and (5) educational institutions are providing minimal support for faculty research and 50% of these institutions do not consider research productivity in the evaluation of faculty members for tenure, promotion, or salary increase.  相似文献

Psychiatric nurses in The Netherlands are moving out of residential mental health institutions and are pioneering home care for the acutely and chronically mentally ill. The purpose of this study was to identify the interventions nurses currently use and to describe the differences between crisis-oriented and long-term psychiatric home care. Data was collected of 159 nursing care plans from four participating crisis-oriented and two long-term psychiatric home care teams. All stated nursing activities were identified and subsequently labelled and classified using the Nursing Intervention Classification (NIC). Results revealed that in both crisis-oriented and long-term psychiatric home care, nurses used a wide range of nursing interventions. Medication Management, Coping Assistance and Activity Therapy were the most frequently undertaken nursing interventions in both types of care. Within crisis-oriented care, Emotional Support and Self-esteem Enhancement dominated, whereas long-term care focused on Socialization Enhancement and Home Maintenance Assistance. The results will be used for further research and for standardization of nursing care plans within these categories of nursing practice.  相似文献

Objective: To determine the shared perceptions, feelings, and expriences of U.S. military nurse veterans.
Design: Phenomenological based on Heideggerian philosophy.
Population, Sample, Setting: The population was of military nurse veterans in the U.S.A. from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and Operation Desert Storm. The convenience sample was 22 nurses recruited from local and national veterans' groups who volunteered to be interviewed.
Methods: Transcribed interviews with team members producing written interpretations; the team produced consensus about themes. Each interview was summarized and validation from the research team and respondents was sought.
Conclusions: Five common themes or shared meanings emerged: reacting personally to the war experience, living in the military, the meaning of nursing in the military, the social context of war, and images and sensations of war.
Clinical Implications: A coherent review of wartime nursing.  相似文献
