Ultrahigh-performance concrete (UHPC) is a novel material demonstrating superior mechanical, durability and sustainability performance. However, its implementation in massive structures is hampered by its high initial cost and the lack of stakeholders’ confidence, especially in developing countries. Therefore, the present study explores, for the first time, a novel application of UHPC, incorporating hybrid steel fibers in precast tunnel lining segments. Reduced scale curved tunnel lining segments were cast using UHPC incorporating hybrid 8 mm and 16 mm steel fibers at dosages of 1%, 2% and 3% by mixture volume. Flexural and thrust load tests were conducted to investigate the mechanical behavior of UHPC tunnel lining segments thus produced. It was observed that the flow of UHPC mixtures decreased due to steel fibers addition, yet steel fibers increased the mechanical and durability properties. Flexural tests on lining segments showed that both the strain hardening (multiple cracking) and strain softening (post-peak behavior) phases were enhanced due to hybrid addition of steel fibers in comparison with the control segments without fibers. Specimens incorporating 3% of hybrid steel fibers achieved 57% increase in ultimate load carrying capacity and exhibited multiple cracking patterns compared to that of identical UHPC segments with 1% fibers. Moreover, segments without fibers incurred excessive cracking and spalling of concrete at the base under the thrust load test. However, more stable behavior was observed for segments incorporating steel fibers under the thrust load, indicating its capability to resist typical thrust loads during tunnel lining field installation. This study highlights the potential use of UHPC with hybrid steel fibers for improved structural behavior. Moreover, the use of UHPC allows producing structural members with reduced cross-sectional dimensions, leading to reduced overall structural weight and increased clear space.  相似文献

The development of cracking in concrete structures leads to significant permeability and to durability problems as a result. Approaches to controlling crack development and crack width in concrete structures have been widely debated. Recently, it was recognized that a high-performance fiber-reinforced cement composite (HPFRCC) provides a possible solution to this inherent problem of cracking by smearing one or several dominant cracks into many distributed microcracks under tensile loading conditions. However, the chloride permeability of HPFRCC under compressive loading conditions is not yet fully understood. Therefore, the goal of the present study is to explore the chloride diffusion characteristics of HPFRCC damaged by compressive loads. The chloride diffusivity of HPFRCC is measured after being subjected to various repeated loads. The results show that the residual axial strain, lateral strain and specific crack area of HPFRCC specimens increase with an increase in the damage induced by repeated loads. However, the chloride diffusion coefficient increases only up to 1.5-times, whereas the specific crack area increases up to 3-times with an increase in damage. Although HPFRCC shows smeared distributed cracks in tensile loads, a significant reduction in the diffusion coefficient of HPFRCC is not obtained compared to plain concrete when the cyclic compressive load is applied below 85% of the strength.  相似文献

The concrete lining in subway tunnels often undergoes cracking damage in coastal cities. The combination of cracked tunnel lining structures and high concentrations of corrosive ions in the groundwater (e.g., chlorine) can accelerate concrete erosion, reduce the mechanical performance of the lining structures and shorten the tunnel service life. This paper investigates the chloride ion concentration in the groundwater of several subway tunnels in the coastal city of Qingdao, China. Indoor experiments and numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the chloride ion transport behaviour and service performance of cracked concrete linings. The results are applied to predict the service life of lining structures. The crack depth in concrete linings is found to have the most significant effect on the transport rate of chloride ions, followed by the crack width. The numerical simulations are carried out using COMSOL software to study the chloride transport behaviour in cracked specimens and predict the service lifetimes of lining structures of different thicknesses, and the results correspond well with the experimental data. The durability of a concrete lining can be enhanced by increasing the thickness of the protective concrete layer. Additional measures are proposed for treating cracked concrete linings to resist chloride ion attack in subway tunnels.  相似文献

Traditional heat transfer analysis has been adopted to predict the damage in a tunnel under fire without considering the effect of concrete spalling, which leads to underestimation of the fire damage of concrete. However, accounting for the spalling effect of concrete under high temperature in an analytical heat transfer model is difficult because of the complexity of the spalling mechanism. This study aims to establish an analytical model to estimate the influence of concrete spalling on the fire-damage depth prediction. To overcome this challenge, first, a series of fire tests were conducted in a unidirectional heating system. The spalling phenomenon and spalling characteristics were observed. Based on the experimental test results, the moisture content of concrete is one of the key factors of spalling. Obvious layered spalling characteristics of concrete samples without drying could be observed under the unidirectional heat conduction system. The critical temperature of spalling is 600 °C, and the thickness of the spalling layer is 2 cm~2.5 cm. These two parameters are critical spalling conditions. Second, a multilayer model for the heat transfer analysis considering the spalling effect of tunnel lining under fire was proposed. By using Laplace transform and the series solving method for ordinary differential equations, the time-dependent temperature and stress fields of concrete lining during tunnel fire could be obtained, which are the basis of damage evolution. The analytical results agreed with the experimental data. The spalling depth of tunnel lining related to the temperature rise of tunnel fire could be predicted by using the proposed analytical model. The results of this research can be used to provide a better damage evaluation of tunnel lining under fire.  相似文献

In this research, the combination of theoretical approach and numerical simulation was employed to comprehensively understand the initiation mechanism of time-delayed rockburst and analyze the time-delayed failure laws for surrounding rock after excavation unloading without prompt support. The investigations are principally at the angle of time and space, which refers to the creep property and damaged scope for surrounding rock. For the theoretical method, the analytical elastic and elastoplastic models for deep tunnel cross section and the creep model for brittle rock material from a microscopic view were combined. It was found that the time-delayed failure for surrounding rock resulted from the damage accumulation with crack development during the creep process. The surrounding rock with the elastic state was more stable than that in the plastic zone and the creep duration increased with growing distance from the center of tunnel section. Based on the theoretical creep model, the numerical simulation ulteriorly analyzed the brittle creep duration on the key positions. The surrounding rock tended to fail more in the strong excavation damage zone (SEDZ) than that in the weakly damaged zone (WEDZ), and brittle creep failure mainly occurred on the excavation border (EB) in a short space of time. In addition, the increase in the radius for tunnel cross section and the higher in situ stress distribution around the opening led to the acceleration of the creep process for surrounding rock, and the irregular cross-section shape of the tunnel caused the local damaged range extension and decreased the duration for time-delayed failure.  相似文献

The reliability and durability of reinforced concrete structures depend on the amount of concrete cracking. The risk associated with cracks generates a need for diagnostic methods for the evaluation of reinforced concrete structures. This paper presents the results of a study of 10 single-span reinforced concrete beams to follow the process of crack formation and changes in their width. The beams were loaded to failure with two forces in a monotonic manner with unloading and in a cyclic manner. Continuous observation of the crack formation process was provided by the digital image correlation system. The simplified method for estimating the maximum crack width is proposed. The presented results confirmed the stochastic character of the process of crack formation and development. The maximum crack widths calculated on the basis of the proposed formula were on the safe side in relation to those calculated according to Eurocode 2. It was also confirmed that the distances between cracks do not depend on the loading manner. Hence the density function describing the distribution of distances between cracks can be used to assess the condition of reinforced concrete elements. The research has also shown the suitability of the DIC system (ARAMIS) for testing concrete elements.  相似文献

The depth of cracks propagating inside reinforcement concrete (RC) components is barely able to be detected by visual inspection. Without any help from facilities, crack width can provide us with a proper way to explore the depth of cracks developing. Therefore, this paper tried to explore the correlation between crack width on the surface and crack depth. A static loading test was conducted on eight RC beams, considering the variation of concrete strength, cover, and reinforcement ratio. The test results indicate that concrete strength has a certain impact on cracking load and the propagation of cracks is mainly related to reinforcement ratio. The linear changes in load and crack width can be found. Originally, crack depth markedly increased with loading, but when restricted by compression zone of concrete and the height of beams, crack depth stopped extending finally. The correlation between crack width and crack depth was analyzed by studying work phases of a cross-section and experimental data. The fitting function achieved in this paper was determined to be a good agreement between the theoretical and the experimental relationship.  相似文献

How to prevent the cracking of tunnel lining concrete under a high-temperature and low-humidity environment has gradually become a challenge faced by the engineering community. Actually, the concrete structure will be restrained, which easily leads to cracking. Aiming at this problem, a self-restraint device of concrete specimens was designed in this paper, which aims to more realistically simulate the restrained state of concrete structures during construction. SEM, EDS and XRD detection methods were used to study the macroscopic and microscopic properties of an early-age restrained concrete specimen under a high-temperature and low-humidity environment, and the results were compared with those of a non-restrained concrete specimen. The results show that the change in the internal relative humidity of the concrete was an extremely slow process, and the response rate of the internal humidity of the concrete was much slower than that of the temperature. A cubic curve model was used to fit the measured concrete damage degree with the loading age, and the fitting effect was good. Under the environment of high temperature and low humidity, the loading age from the 0.6th day to the 1st day was the period of a relatively large fluctuation in the concrete temperature and humidity, and the restraint would aggravate the damage of the concrete. The damage degree increased with the increase in the loading age, the microcracks gradually increased and, finally, macrocracks were formed. The restraint effect was to intensify the formation of microcracks, affect the hydration of the cement at the micro level and, finally, increase the risk of concrete cracking perpendicular to the restrained direction at the macro level. The research results may provide guidance for research on the cracking mechanism of tunnel lining concrete constructed under a high-temperature and low-humidity environment.  相似文献

Two-dimensional meso-scale finite element models with real aggregates are developed using images obtained by digital image processing to simulate crack propagation processes in concrete under uniaxial compression loading. The finite element model is regarded as a three-phase composite material composed of aggregate, mortar matrix and interface transition zone (ITZ). Cohesive elements with traction–separation laws are used to simulate complex nonlinear fracture. During the experiment, digital image correlation (DIC) was used to obtain the deformation and cracks of the specimens at different loading stages. The concept of strain ratio is proposed to describe the effectiveness of simulation. Results show that the numerical strain ratio curve and stress–strain curves are both in good agreement with experimental data. The consistency between the cracks obtained by simulation and those obtained by DIC shows the good performance of cohesive elements as well as the effectiveness of simulation. In summary, the model is able to provide accurate predictions of the whole fracture process in concrete under uniaxial compression loading.  相似文献

The cracking of rock mass under compression is the main factor causing structural failure. Therefore, it is very crucial to establish a rock damage evolution model to investigate the crack development process and reveal the failure and instability mechanism of rock under load. In this study, four different strength types of rock samples from hard to weak were selected, and the Voronoi method was used to perform and analyze uniaxial compression tests and the fracture process. The change characteristics of the number, angle, and length of cracks in the process of rock failure and instability were obtained. Three laws of crack development, damage evolution, and energy evolution were analyzed. The main conclusions are as follows. (1) The rock’s initial damage is mainly caused by tensile cracks, and the rapid growth of shear cracks after exceeding the damage threshold indicates that the rock is about to be a failure. The development of micro-cracks is mainly concentrated on the diagonal of the rock sample and gradually expands to the middle along the two ends of the diagonal. (2) The identification point of failure precursor information in Acoustic Emission (AE) can effectively provide a safety warning for the development of rock fracture. (3) The uniaxial compression damage constitutive equation of the rock sample with the crack length as the parameter is established, which can better reflect the damage evolution characteristics of the rock sample. (4) Tensile crack requires low energy consumption and energy dispersion is not concentrated. The damage is not apparent. Shear cracks are concentrated and consume a large amount of energy, resulting in strong damage and making it easy to form macro-cracks.  相似文献

Desiccation cracking frequently occurs in mud, clay, and pavement. Understanding the evolution of desiccation cracking may facilitate the development of techniques to mitigate cracking and even prevent it from developing altogether. In this study, experimental investigations were performed focusing on the effects of fibers on the evolution of desiccation cracking in soil-cement. Varied types of fibers (i.e., jute fiber and polyvinyl alcohol fiber (PVA)) and fiber contents (i.e., 0%, 0.25%, 0.5%, and 1%) were involved. The digital image correlation (DIC) method was employed to capture the evolution and propagation of cracks in the soil-cement specimens when subjected to desiccation. The results show that the presence of fibers imposes significant effects on the crack propagation pattern as well as the area and length of the cracks in the soil-cement during shrinkage. The addition of fibers, however, insignificantly affects the evaporation rate of the specimens. The crack area and crack length of the specimens decreased significantly when more fibers were included. There were no macroscopic cracks observed in the specimens where the fiber content was 1%. The DIC method effectively helped to determine the evolution of displacement and strain field on the specimens’ surface during the drying process. The DIC method is therefore useful for crack monitoring.  相似文献

The dynamic response behavior of concrete is constantly concerned because of seismic, impact and explosion events in the service of constructions. As a classic device for testing the dynamic mechanical properties of materials, the splitting Hopkinson pressure bar was used to carry out dynamic splitting tests on concrete in this paper. The variation of the dynamic tensile strength against the stress rate was fitted by the incubation time criterion. The full-field strain distribution on the observed surface of the specimen at the crack initiation stage was obtained by the digital image correlation (DIC) method. Morphological characteristics of the fragmentized process of concrete specimens in splitting processes were obtained by combining the image processing techniques and the FracPaQ. The size distribution of fragments of concrete specimens was obtained by sieving. The results show that the strain concentration zone and crack initiation appear along the loading direction through the center of the specimen. The secondary cracks initiated occurred at the contact end of the specimen, which expanded along the strain concentration zone and then interacted with the main crack. At the early stage of crack extension, the main crack dominates the normalized length of fracture traces in the horizontal direction. The normalized length of the vertical fracture trace increases with the main cracks opening width and the expansion of the secondary crack. The relationship between the length and angle of fracture traces in the dynamic splitting process of concrete conforms to the Gaussian function. Finally, the fragment sizes decrease with the stress rates of impact loads.  相似文献

To determine the validity of steel fiber reinforced expanded-shale lightweight concrete (SFRELC) applied in structures, the shear behavior of SFRELC structural components needs to be understood. In this paper, four-point bending tests were carried out on reinforced SFRELC beams with stirrups and a varying volume fraction of steel fiber from 0.4% to 1.6%. The shear cracking force, shear crack width and distribution pattern, mid-span deflection, and failure modes of test beams were recorded. Results indicate that the shear failure modes of reinforced SFRELC beams with stirrups were modified from brittle to ductile and could be transferred to the flexure mode with the increasing volume fraction of steel fiber. The coupling of steel fibers with stirrups contributed to the shear cracking force and the shear capacity provided by the SFRELC, and it improved the distribution of shear cracks. At the limit loading level of beams in building structures at serviceability, the maximum width of shear cracks could be controlled within 0.3 mm and 0.2 mm with the volume fraction of steel fiber increased from 0.4% to 0.8%. Finally, the formulas are proposed for the prediction of shear-cracking force, shear crack width, and shear capacity of reinforced SFRELC beams with stirrups.  相似文献

This work aims to investigate and analyse the mechanism of rock failure under high-voltage electropulses in order to evaluate and increase the efficiency of high-voltage pulse technology in geological well drilling, tunnel boring, and other geotechnical engineering applications. To this end, this paper discusses the equivalent circuit of electric pulse rock breaking, the model of shock wave in electro channel plasma, and, particularly, the model of rock failure in order to disclose the rock failure process when exposed to high-voltage electropulse. This article uses granite as an example to present an analytical approach for predicting the mechanical behaviour of high-voltage electropulses and to analyse the damage that occurs. A numerical model based on equivalent circuit, shock wave model, and elasto-brittle failure criterion is developed for granite under electropulse to further examine the granite failure process. Under the conditions described in this study, and using granite as an example, the granite is impacted by a discharge device (Marx generator) with an initial voltage U0 that is 10 kV and a capacitance F that is 5 µF before it begins to degrade at about 40 µs after discharge, with the current reaching its peak at approximately 50 µs. The shock wave pressure then attains a peak at about 70 µs. Dense short cracks form around granite and the dominant cracks grow to an average length of about 20 cm at around 200 µs. The crack width dcr is predicted to be approximately 1.6 mm. This study detects dense cracks in a few centimetres surrounding the borehole, while around seven dominant cracks expand outward. The distribution of the length of the dominating cracks can be inhomogeneous because of the spatial heterogeneity of granite’s tensile strength, however the heterogeneity has an insignificant effect on the crack growth rate, total cracked area, or the number of main cracks. The mechanism of rock failure under electropulse can be well supported by the findings of numerical simulations and analytical studies.  相似文献

Electrochemical H charging, hydrogen permeation, and hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) behavior of 690 MPa grade steel substrate and different heat-treatment states (annealed, quenched, normalized, tempered) are investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), hydrogen permeation, electrochemical H charging, and slow strain rate tensile test (SSRT). The results show that hydrogen diffuses through the steel with the highest rate in base metal and the lowest rate in annealed steel. The hydrogen-induced cracks in base metal show obvious step shape with tiny cracks near the main crack. The cracks of annealed steel are mainly distributed along pearlite. The crack propagation of quenched steel is mainly transgranular, while the hydrogen-induced crack propagation of tempered steel is along the prior austenite grain boundary. HIC sensitivity of base metal is the lowest due to its fine homogeneous grain structure, small hydrogen diffusion coefficient, and small hydrogen diffusion rate. There are many hydrogen traps in annealed steel, such as the two-phase interface which provides accommodation sites for H atoms and increases the HIC susceptibility.  相似文献

The robustness and stability of the system depend on structural integrity. This stability is, however, compromised by aging, wear and tear, overloads, and environmental factors. A study of vibration and fatigue cracking for structural health monitoring is one of the core research areas in recent times. In this paper, the structural dynamics and fatigue crack propagation behavior when subjected to thermal and mechanical loads were studied. It investigates the modal parameters of uncracked and various cracked specimens under uniform and non-uniform temperature conditions. The analytical model was validated by experimental and numerical approaches. The analysis was evaluated by considering different heating rates to attain the required temperatures. The heating rates were controlled by a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) temperature controller. It showed that a slow heating rate required an ample amount of time but more accurate results than quick heating. This suggested that the heating rate can cause variation in the structural response, especially at elevated temperatures. A small variation in modal parameters was also observed when the applied uniform temperatures were changed to non-uniform temperatures. This study substantiates the fatigue crack propagation behavior of pre-seeded cracks. The results show that propagated cracking depends on applied temperatures and associated mass. The appearance of double crack fronts and multiple cracks were observed. The appearance of multiple cracks seems to be due to the selection of the pre-seeded crack shape. Hence, the real cracks and pre-seeded cracks are distinct and need careful consideration in fatigue crack propagation analysis.  相似文献

In the present work, a numerical model based on the cohesive zone modeling (CZM) approach has been developed to simulate mixed-mode fracture of co-consolidated low melt polyaryletherketone thermoplastic laminates by considering fiber bridging. A modified traction separation law of a tri-linear form has been developed by superimposing the bi-linear behaviors of the matrix and fibers. Initially, the data from mode I (DCB) and mode II (ENF) fracture toughness tests were used to construct the R-curves of the joints in the opening and sliding directions. The constructed curves were incorporated into the numerical models employing a user-defined material subroutine developed in the LS-Dyna finite element (FE) code. A numerical method was used to extract the fiber bridging law directly from the simulation results, thus eliminating the need for the continuous monitoring of crack opening displacement during testing. The final cohesive model was implemented via two identical FE models to simulate the fracture of a Single-Lap-Shear specimen, in which a considerable amount of fiber bridging was observed on the fracture area. The numerical results showed that the developed model presented improved accuracy in comparison to the CZM with the bi-linear traction–separation law (T–SL) in terms of the predicted strength of the joint.  相似文献

This study investigates the effects of adding different types of fibers to concrete mixes on the shear behavior of double-span fiber-reinforced concrete beams with or without shear reinforcement. As a part of the experimental study, a total of twenty-seven natural-scale double-span beams were tested. The beams, made of concrete with steel or basalt fiber, with fiber dosages of 78.5 and 5 kg/m3, were tested under shear force. The three tested series consisted of three beams with dimensions of 120 × 300 × 4150 mm, with various numbers of stirrups and contents of fiber reinforcement. During the tests, the shear capacity of the elements was determined. The values of support reactions, deflection in the middle of the span of both beam spans, deformations on the surface of the concrete member in the middle of the span in the compressive and tensile zone, and cracking (crack development and crack width) were also measured. The beams were tested using a digital image correlation (DIC) technique. Test results show that shear capacity increases in beams made of concrete with steel (1.87) or basalt fibers (1.23). Moreover, the failure mode changes from shear (brittle) to flexure-shear (less brittle). The experimental shear capacity of beams was compared with the theoretical values predicted by different design codes, i.e., fib Model Code 2010 and RILEM TC 162-TDF 2003. The results show that all the design codes underestimate the contribution of fiber-reinforced concrete beams to shear resistance and greatly overestimate the contribution of shear reinforcement.  相似文献

In underground tunnels or caverns, time-dependent deformation or failure of rock mass, such as extending cracks, gradual rock falls, etc., are a costly irritant and a major safety concern if the time-dependent damage of surrounding rock is serious. To understand the damage evolution of rock mass in underground engineering, an in situ experimental testing was carried out in a large belowground tunnel with a scale of 28.5 m in width, 21 m in height and 352 m in length. The time-dependent damage of rock mass was detected in succession by an ultrasonic wave test after excavation. The testing results showed that the time-dependent damage of rock mass could last a long time, i.e., nearly 30 days. Regression analysis of damage factors defined by wave velocity, resulted in the time-dependent evolutional damage equation of rock mass, which corresponded with logarithmic format. A damage viscoelastic-plastic model was developed to describe the exposed time-dependent deterioration of rock mass by field test, such as convergence of time-dependent damage, deterioration of elastic modules and logarithmic format of damage factor. Furthermore, the remedial measures for damaged surrounding rock were discussed based on the measured results and the conception of damage compensation, which provides new clues for underground engineering design.  相似文献

In view of the fact that it is easy for the ancient city soil site of Cai Kingdom to expand and crack when encountering water, this paper explores the methods to improve the expansion and shrinkage deformation, dry shrinkage cracks and easy water absorption characteristics of the expanded site soil based on a lime and silicone hydrophobic agent. In this paper, the expansive clay in the old city site of Cai Kingdom in Zhumadian was taken as the research object, and the dry-shrinkage fissure test of saturated expansive soil was carried out, to study the influencing factors of the dry-shrinkage cracking of expansive soil in this area. The site soil was modified with lime and glue powder, and the fissure image was quantitatively analyzed by MATLAB. The test shows that the smaller the particle size, the faster the evaporation of water and the smaller the surface fissure rate; the thicker the thickness of the soil sample, the greater the surface fissure rate and the greater the crack width; and with the increase in the number of drying and wetting cycles, the surface fissure rate of the soil sample increases. In this paper, lime and waterproof materials are used to improve the expansive soil. This not only reduces the dry shrinkage crack rate, but also improves the waterproof performance and durability of expansive soil.  相似文献
