Topically applied all-trans retinoic acid (RA) is often associated with skin irritation. A detailed quantification of RA-induced functional changes in stratum corneum is. however, still limited. U sing noti-invasive bioengineering techniques of measurements of transepidermal water loss (TEWL), stratum corneum hydration and cutaneous blood flow (CBF). we quantified the irritant effects of 0·05% and 0·1% RA in ethanol on normal skin compared with 1% sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) in water as a model irritant in a 24-h occlusive patch-test assay. Additionally, in order to document data possibly related to the mechanism of action, skin responses to both compounds applied in tandem was also investigated over 18 days The extent of the irritant response to 0·05 and 0·1% RA, respectively, were similar, implying analogous irritation potency. While RA caused more intense scaling than SLS. other skin responses to RA were significantly weaker than those due to SLS. An increase in TEWL. on day 7. in RA-exposed sites indicates a secondary delayed impairment of the stratum corneum (SC) barrier. In a tandem-design assay, pretreatment with RA appeared to reduce the irritant effects of SLS on SC hydration and CBF. In contrast, pre-exposure to SLS showed a synergestic response in erythema, scaling and TEWL Our results demonstrate that RA, like SLS. is capable of impairing SC water barrier function, which may be responsible, in part, for the irritation associated with its topical use. However, the distinctive biological responses to these compounds suggest a different mode of action of RA and SLS. In addition, the precise reason for the unique results observed in the tandem-design assays is not clear.  相似文献

The chronic effects of the irritant sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) on stratum corneum (SC) barrier function, determined by transepidermal water loss (TEWL) measurements and on epidermal cell kinetics, estimated by stratum corneum turnover time (SCTT) determination (dansyl chloride staining method), were investigated in 18 healthy female volunteers. SLS (7.5%) was applied without occlusion for 20 min once daily, over a period of 3 weeks (5 days a week) on dansyl chloride-stained skin and on untreated skin. SCTT of untreated skin (19.3 +/- 0.8 days; mean +/- SEM) was not changed by daily treatment with water (control) (19.3 +/- 2.0) but was significantly reduced by SLS (10.9 +/- 0.6; P less than or equal to 0.0001; compared to controls). However, TEWL was increased in SLS-treated sites 1.5-fold after 4 days of treatment (5.3 +/- 0.6 vs. 3.5 +/- 0.3; P less than 0.001). At the end of the second week, TEWL was increased 2.6-fold and after 3 weeks TEWL was 3.3 times higher than in controls 13.0 +/- 1.6 vs. 3.9, P less than or equal to 0.0001). The intensity of SLS-induced irritation as measured by TEWL was significantly correlated with baseline TEWL (r = 0.50; P less than or equal to 0.02) and significantly negatively correlated with SCTT of SLS treated sites (r = -50; P less than or equal to 0.02) but not with SCTT of untreated skin (r = 0.19).  相似文献

Background: The sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) irritation test is a well-established model for irritant contact dermatitis after the effects of surfactants.
Aim of the study: The course of changes in corneometric measurements (stratum corneum hydration), in transepidermal water loss (TEWL), in laser Doppler measurements (epidermal perfusion) and in colorimetric measurements (skin redness), after a single SLS irritation, should be studied over time.
Methods: Twenty healthy volunteers were studied. Irritation with 1% SLS solution was applied to the side of one forearm for 24 h under occlusive conditions, while the symmetrical experimental site remained untreated. Measurements were made for 9 days after completion of SLS irritation.
Results: Stratum corneum hydration was reduced immediately after irritation, and subsequently a hyper-hydration was observed. The increase in TEWL, laser Doppler measurements and skin redness persisted for 7–9 days. With regard to skin redness, a mild blanching effect was noticeable after 9 days.
Discussion: The evidence of very short-term exsiccation of the stratum corneum with persistent barrier damage, as well as reactive hyper-hydration and blanching of the skin, is remarkable. These first findings suggest that exsiccation of the stratum corneum is not caused by a damage to barrier lipids.  相似文献

Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), a surfactant frequently used in the induction of experimental irritant contact dermatitis in animals and in humans, characterstically induces a dose-related increase in TEWL (transepidermal water loss). Ceramides are considered to be important in the regulation of the skin barrier. We therefore examined the relationship between initial ceramide content of stratum corneum and induced changes in skin color (erythema) and barrier function, after SLS application under occlusion (1% and 3% in water) to the forearm of 14 volunteers. Stratum corneum sheets were removed, stratum corneum lipids extracted, and ceramide composition determined from chromatograms (TLC) using densitometry. After determining baseline skin color and TEWL at each area. 2 samples of stratum corneum were obtained from each volunteer. Clinical and instrumental controls of the SLS-induced irritation were performed at 24, 48, 72 and 96 h. Erythema was evaluated by colorimetry; barrier impairment by changes in TEWL. We found inverse correlations between baseline ceramide 61 (weight) and the 24 h erythema score for SLS: between ceramide I and 24 h TEWL, and between ceramide 611 and 72 h TEWL for SLS 3%. Our findings suggest that low levels of these ceramides may determine a proclivity to SLS-induced irritant contact dermatitis.  相似文献

Quercetin is a bioflavonoid with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of quercetin on acute skin irritation, with special interest in the skin barrier function recovery. Acute irritant contact dermatitis was induced in 15 patients by 24-h occlusion of 2% sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) (day (D) 1). The influence of application on SLS-irritated skin of topical quercetin for 5 consecutive Ds, compared to vehicle and controls, was studied. Parameters measured were transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and erythema index. Final measurements were taken on D 7 after a 1-D rest period. TEWL and the erythema index continued to rise 2 D after application of SLS and 1 D after treatment with quercetin, vehicle or controls. Both TEWL and erythema values at D 7 did not return to values before the SLS barrier disruption at all the test sites. Therefore, quercetin topically applied after induction of irritant contact dermatitis does not appear to increase the recovery of barrier function and erythema caused by SLS.  相似文献

Little is known about cytokines involved in chronic irritant contact dermatitis. Individual cytokine profiles might explain at least part of the differences in the individual response to irritation. Our objective was to investigate the relation between baseline stratum corneum (SC) cytokine levels and the skin response to a single and a repeated irritation test. This study also aimed to determine changes in SC cytokine levels after repeated irritation. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and erythema were measured in 20 volunteers after single 24-hr exposure to 1% sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), and during and after repeated exposure to 0.1% SLS over a 3-week period. SC cytokine levels were measured from an unexposed skin site and from the repeatedly exposed site. Interleukin (IL)-1alpha decreased by 30% after repeated exposure, while IL-1RA increased 10-fold and IL-8 increased fourfold. Baseline IL-1RA and IL-8 values were predictors of TEWL and erythema after single exposure (r = 0.55-0.61). 6 subjects showed barrier recovery during repeated exposure. Baseline IL-1RA and IL-8 levels are likely to be indicators of higher skin irritability after single exposure to SLS. Barrier repair in some of the subjects might explain the lack of agreement between the TEWL response after single and repeated irritation.  相似文献

Exposure of the skin to sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) leads to disruption of barrier and skin irritation. We used repetitive short exposure to a low molarity SDS solution as an in vivo model to mimic the development of irritant contact dermatitis. In this model, we studied clinical (erythema), functional (transepidermal water loss(TEWL)) and cell biological changes, 24 healthy volunteers were patch tested with SDS (0.2%) for 4 h a the day for 5 consecutive days. After removal of the patches, the exposed sites were treated 1 × daily either with a topical corticosteroid (triamcinolon acetoide cream 0.05%). a retinoid (tretinoin cream 0.025%). or a vitamin D3 derivative (calcipotriol ointment 50 microgram/g). Irritant reactions were assessed by erythema scoring and measurement of barrier function with TEWL up to 14 days after the first challenge. Skin biopsies were taken for cell biological changes at day 4. Vehicle-treated sites served as controls. Repetitive exposure of human skin to SDS resulted in a gradual increase in erythema scoring and TEWL associated with the upregulation of proliferative cells as measured by the expression of Ki-67-antigen and of differentiation markers, visualized by increased expression of involucrin and epidermal-fatty-acid binding protein (E-FABP). Skin irritation as assessed by erythema scoring and TEWL was not significantly suppressed by triamcinolone cream. However, a significant reduction of the number of cycling keratinocytes and a decrease in involucrin positive cell layers was observed in this group. Neither treatment with calcipotriol ointment nor with tretinoin cream induced improvement of skin irritation as judged by visual scoring and TEWL. In contrast to steroid treatment no significant elf eel of calcipotriol ointment or tretinoin cream treatment was observed with regard to the number of cycling cells and differentiation markers. Further studies are needed to assess whether treatment with topical corticosteroids is an effective modality in skin irritation and irritant contact dermatitis.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Skin irritability after a brief exposure to the model skin irritant, sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), is known to vary considerably between individuals. A difference in the skin barrier to SLS may contribute to this variation. To date, no human in vivo data have been available on SLS penetration into the skin. OBJECTIVES: We studied whether the SLS penetration rate into the stratum corneum (SC) is related to impairment of the water barrier function and inflammation of the skin. METHODS: The penetration of SLS into the SC was assessed using a noninvasive tape-stripping procedure in 20 volunteers after a 4-h exposure to 1% SLS. Additionally, the effect of a 24-h exposure to 1% SLS on the skin water barrier function was assessed by measuring the transepidermal water loss (TEWL). The accompanying inflammation was quantified by measuring erythema. RESULTS: The mean +/- SD diffusivity of SLS (D) and the SLS permeability coefficient (Kp) were 1.4 +/- 0.6 x 10(-8) cm2 h(-1) and 1.5 +/- 0.7 x 10(-3) cm h(-1), respectively. A multiple regression analysis showed that the baseline TEWL, SC thickness and SLS penetration parameters K (SC/water partition coefficient) and D clearly influenced the increase in TEWL after the 24-h irritation test (explained variance: r2 = 0.80). Change in erythema was mainly influenced by SC thickness. CONCLUSIONS: We found that variation in the barrier impairment and inflammation of human skin depends on the SLS penetration rate, which was mainly determined by SC thickness.  相似文献

Background

Recently, natural moisturizing factors (NMFs) and corneocyte surface topography were suggested as biomarkers for irritant dermatitis.

Objectives

To investigate how exposure to different irritants influences corneocyte surface topography, NMF levels and the barrier function of human skin in vivo.

Methods

Eight healthy adult volunteers were exposed to aqueous solutions of 60% n‐propanol, 0.5% sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), 0.15% sodium hydroxide, and 2.0% acetic acid, and distilled water, in a repeated irritation test over a period of 96 hours. Erythema, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), skin hydration, the dermal texture index (DTI) and NMF levels were measured at baseline, and after 24 and 96 hours.

Results

SLS and sodium hydroxide had the most pronounced effects on erythema and TEWL. Although n‐propanol caused only slight changes in TEWL and erythema, it showed pronounced effects on skin hydration, NMF levels, and the DTI. NMF was the only parameter that was significantly altered by all investigated irritants. The changes in the DTI were inversely associated with NMF levels and skin hydration.

Conclusion

Skin barrier impairment and the inflammatory response are irritant‐specific, emphasizing the need for a multiparametric approach to the study of skin irritation. NMF levels seem to be the most sensitive parameter in detecting irritant‐induced skin barrier alterations.  相似文献

Alpha hydroxyacids (AHAs) are used to enhance stratum corneum desquamation and improve skin appearance. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether some AHAs improve skin barrier function and prevent skin irritation. Eleven healthy subjects (aged 28 ± 6 years. mean ± SD) entered the study. Six test sites of 8×5 cm (four different AHAs, vehicle only (VE) and untreated control (UNT)) were selected and randomly rotated on the volar arm and forearm. The four different AHAs at 8% concentration in base cream were glycolic acid (GA), lactic acid, tartaric acid (TA) and gluconolactone (GLU). The products were applied twice a day for 4 weeks (2 mg/cm2). At week 4, a 5% sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) challenge patch test was performed under occlusion for 6 h (HillTop chamber. 18 mm wide) on each site. Barrier function and skin irritation were evaluated by means of evaporimetry (Servomed EP-1) and chromametry (a* value, Minolta CR200) weekly, and at 0.24 and 48 h after SLS patch removal. No significant differences in transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and erythema were observed between the four AHAs at week 4. After SLS challenge. GLU and TA-treated sites resulted in significantly lower TEWL compared with VE, UNT (P<0.01) and GA (P<0.05) both at 24 and 48 h. Similarly, a* values were significantly reduced after irritation in GLU-and TA-treated sites. This study shows that AHAs can modulate stratum corneum barrier function and prevent skin irritation: the effect is not equal for all AHAs. being more marked for the molecules characterized by antioxidant properties.  相似文献

Background. Occlusion of the skin is a risk factor for development of irritant contact dermatitis. Occlusion may, however, have a positive effect on skin healing. No consensus on the effect of occlusion has been reached. Objectives. To investigate skin barrier response to occlusion on intact and damaged skin. Methods. In study A, the response to occlusion (nitrile glove material) for either 8 hr daily for 7 days or for 72 consecutive hours, respectively, was determined and compared with that of non‐occluded skin. In study B, the response to occlusion of for 72 consecutive hours of skin that had been damaged by either sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) or tape stripping, respectively, was determined and compared with that of to non‐occluded pre‐damaged skin. Skin barrier function was assessed by measurements of trans‐epidermal water loss (TEWL) and erythema. In study A, stratum corneum lipids were analysed. Results. Occlusion of healthy skin did not significantly influence skin barrier function, ceramide profile or the ceramide/cholesterol ratio. Occlusion of the skin after SLS irritation resulted in higher TEWL than in the control (P = 0.049). Occlusion of the skin after tape stripping resulted in lower TEWL than in control skin (P = 0.007). Conclusions. A week of occlusion did not significantly affect healthy skin, but was found to decrease healing of SLS‐damaged skin, and to improve healing of tape‐stripped skin.  相似文献

Alitretinoin is a new drug for systemic treatment of chronic hand eczema. Previous functional tests of skin topically treated with retinoids have indicated impaired skin barrier function, but no data are available on barrier parameters after systemic alitretinoin treatment. To investigate the effect of systemic alitretinoin on skin barrier function and response to irritants, a secondary objective was to determine if changes occur in the lipid profile of stratum corneum after treatment with systemic alitretinoin. We conducted an open clinical intervention study on eight people ascribed to systemic alitretinoin treatment. The criteria for being ascribed to alitretinoin were chronic hand eczema and insufficient therapeutic response to potent topical corticosteroids. Before initiation and after 2 months of systemic treatment with 30 mg alitretinoin, a challenge with sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) was performed on the volar forearm and evaluated by trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), erythema, and a cyanoacrylate skin sample was obtained for lipid analysis. We found no significant changes in response to SLS irritation as evaluated by TEWL and erythema, after treatment with alitretinoin for 2 months. No significant changes in stratum corneum lipids were found after 2 months of treatment. In conclusion, systemic alitretinoin does not influence skin susceptibility to irritants or the ceramide profile of stratum corneum.  相似文献

Background

Hardening phenomenon of human skin after repeated exposure to the irritants is well-known, but the precise mechanism remains elusive.

Objective

To modify the previous experimental model of hardening phenomenon by repeated applications of two different concentrations of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) solutions to Korean healthy volunteers and to investigate the quantitative changes of ceramides in stratum corneum before and after chronic repeated irritation.

Methods

Eight hundred microliters of distilled water containing 0.1% and 2% SLS was applied for 10 minutes on the forearm of 41 healthy volunteers for 3 weeks. After an intervening 3-week rest, 24-hour patch tests with 1% SLS were conducted on previously irritated sites. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL), erythema index and quantity of ceramide were measured in the stratum corneum before and after irritation.

Results

TEWL values on the sites preirritated with 2% SLS were lower than those with 0.1% SLS. Hardening phenomenon occurred in 24 volunteers at day 44. The changes in ceramide levels were not significantly higher in the hardened skin than in the non-hardened skin.

Conclusion

Repetitive stimulation with a higher concentration of SLS can more easily trigger skin hardening.  相似文献

To investigate differences in response to irritation according to age and site seven young-adult and eight elderly females were exposed to 0.25% sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) under patch-test occlusion for 24 h. Ten anatomical regions were tested: forehead, upper arm, volar and dorsal forearm, postauricular, palm, abdomen, upper back, thigh, and ankle. The skin responses were evaluated 24 h post-patch removal by visual scoring and by transepidermal water loss measurements (TEWL). Non-treated symmetrical anatomical regions served as controls. SLS induced a mild erythematous reaction on most anatomical regions except the palm and TEWL was significantly increased as compared with controls. The elderly group demonstrated significantly less susceptibility to SLS-induced irritation for most regions of the body as indicated by visual scores and TEWL measurements. In addition, evaluation of the stratum corneum water content following SLS irritation demonstrated lower responses in the old age group for most regions. The thigh had the highest reactivity and the palm the lowest, in both age groups. These data suggest that young adult skin is more sensitive to SLS than old skin and that SLS irritation varies considerably with respect to region. Moreover, objective TEWL measurements seem to be a better indicator of irritant susceptibility, especially in the elderly, than clinical evaluation by visual scoring.  相似文献

Background  Stratum corneum intercellular lipids, such as ceramides, play an important role in the regulation of skin water barrier homeostasis and water-holding capacity.
Aim  To evaluate the potential water retention capacity of control emulsion and three oil-in-water (o/w) emulsions containing ceramide 1, ceramide 3, or both.
Methods  Fifteen healthy Asian women (age, 20–30 years) with healthy skin, pretreated with sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), applied the tested emulsions twice daily over a period of 28 days. Skin hydration and transepidermal water loss (TEWL) values were measured on the indicated days with a Corneometer®825 and a TEWAMETER TM210, respectively.
Results  The maximum increase in skin humidity was reached after 4 weeks, with values of 21.9 ± 1.8% and 8.9 ± 0.9% for emulsion C and control emulsion, respectively. The maximum decrease in TEWL was also reached after 4 weeks, with values of 36.7 ± 4.7% and 5.1 ± 0.8% for the same emulsions.
Conclusions  It can be concluded that all the tested ceramide-containing emulsions improved skin barrier function when compared with untreated skin. There was some indication that ceramides 1 and 3 contained in emulsion C might exert a beneficial synergistic effect on skin biochemical properties, such as skin hydration and TEWL, and play a key role in the protection mechanism against SLS irritation.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: After using cosmetics, Japanese women frequently complain about sensitive, stinging skin. We wondered whether Japanese women's skin is more sensitive than that of Caucasians. OBJECTIVES: To examine possible racial differences of skin irritation and subjective sensations. METHODS: We performed patch testing on the forearm with sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) at different concentrations (0.25%, 0.5%) and 24-h exposure time. Skin reaction was evaluated by measurement of transepidermal water loss (TEWL), stratum corneum hydration, sebum secretion, laser Doppler flowmetry (LD), content of melanin and erythema. During a stinging test with 10% lactic acid (applied to one side of the cheeks) the subjects were asked to describe the present intensity of any sensation. We used a Chromameter to measure skin colour before and after application of lactic acid. This study was performed in Marburg, Germany, with healthy Japanese and German women living in Marburg. RESULTS: After SLS testing, we found no significant differences of the barrier function in the stratum corneum, but we found significant subjective sensory differences between Japanese and German women. CONCLUSIONS: Japanese women may complain about stronger sensations reflecting a different cultural behaviour rather than measurable differences in skin physiology; however, a faster penetration of SLS in Japanese cannot be excluded.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-based hand rubs are used worldwide to prevent transmission of nosocomial pathogens. OBJECTIVES: To investigate skin irritation caused by alcohols alone and in combination with detergent washing. METHODS: Single and repetitive patch testing with 60-100% alcohols [ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol (synonyms: isopropyl alcohol, isopropanol)], a positive control [0.5% sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS)] and negative controls (empty chamber and water) were performed. Wash tests were performed with 80% ethanol and 0.5% SLS on the forearms with each agent alone and with both agents in a tandem design. Skin hydration, erythema and barrier disruption [measured as transepidermal water loss (TEWL)] were evaluated (always 15 volunteers). RESULTS: We found no significant change in skin barrier or erythema induced by the alcohols in the patch tests, whereas skin hydration decreased significantly. Application of alcohols to previously irritated skin did not show a stronger skin barrier disruption than application of SLS alone. Wash tests demonstrated that alcohol application caused significantly less skin irritation than washing with a detergent (TEWL, P < 0.001; skin hydration, P < 0.05; erythema, P < 0.05). Even on previously irritated skin, ethanol did not enhance irritation. By contrast, a protective effect of ethanol used after skin washing was observed (TEWL, P < 0.05; skin hydration, P < 0.05; erythema, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Alcohol-based hand rubs cause less skin irritation than hand washing and are therefore preferred for hand hygiene from the dermatological point of view. An alcohol-based hand rub may even decrease rather than increase skin irritation after a hand wash due to a mechanical partial elimination of the detergent.  相似文献

Calcipotriol is widely used in the treatment of psoriasis. Adverse lesional and perilesional irritation may occur. Allergy may occasionally be suspected. Allergy patch testing with calcipotriol may be difficult or impossible because calcipotriol is a local irritant. The aim of the present study was to assess the calcipotriol dose–irritation relationship, and establish a non-irritant patch test concentration for calcipotriol allergy patch testing. The study was a prospective, double-blind, randomized, dose titration evaluation in 180 healthy volunteers never previously exposed to calcipotriol. All individuals were patch tested with a calcipotriol dilution series (range 0.016–250 μg/mL). Clinical reading of test sites and measurement of erythema using a Minolta ChromaMeter were performed on days 2 and 3. Laser Doppler perfusion imaging of cutaneous blood flow was performed on day 3.
Doubtful reactions (score ½) and weak reactions (score 1) were frequent and observed even at low dose exposure. Reactions declined in strength between the readings on day 2 and day 3. Only score 2 reactions with moderate erythema and some infiltration showed a threshold of no irritation. This threshold was confirmed by colorimetry and flowmetry. Cases of suspected allergy to calcipotriol may, to avoid irritant reaction and false positive readings, be patch tested with calcipotriol 2 μg/mL citrate-buffered isopropanol solution applied under occlusion for 48 h using small Finn Chambers®. Score ½ and 1 reactions are likely to reflect irritation. A positive test should be repeated after a minimum period of 3 months to ensure its consistency over time. A repeated open application test may be indicated.  相似文献

Glycerol, widely used as humectant, is known to protect against irritants and to accelerate recovery of irritated skin. However, most studies were done with topical formulations (i.e. emulsions) containing glycerol in relatively high amounts, preventing drawing conclusions from direct effects. In this study, acute chemical irritations were performed on the forearm with application of a 10% sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) aqueous solution under occlusion for 3 h. Then, glycerol aqueous solutions from 1 to 10% were applied under occlusion for 3 h. After elimination of moist excess consecutive to occlusive condition, in ambient air for 15 and 30 min, skin barrier function was investigated by dual measurement of skin hydration and transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Treatments with SLS solution under occlusion significantly increased TEWL and decreased skin hydration as assessed by capacitance measurements. The SLS irritant property was raised by the occlusion and the water barrier function as well as water content appeared impaired. Recovery with glycerol at low doses was remarkable through a mechanism that implies its hygroscopic properties and which is saturable. This precocious effect acts through skin rehydration by enhancing water-holding capacity of stratum corneum that would facilitate the late physiological repair of impaired skin barrier. Thus, glycerol appears to substitute for natural moisturizing factors that have been washed out by the detergent action of SLS, enhancing skin hydration but without restoring skin barrier function as depicted by TEWL values that remained high. Thus, irritant contact dermatitis treated with glycerol application compensate for skin dehydration, favouring physiological process to restore water barrier function of the impaired skin. Empirical use of glycerol added topical formulations onto detergent altered skin was substantiated in the present physicochemical approach.  相似文献

Repeated, daily, open sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) applications caused slight alterations in transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and dielectric water content (DEWC) in males and females. No erythema developed. Inter-individual variation in skin reactivity was demonstrated; sex-related patterns in reactivity to open cumulative irritant exposure did not exist. In patch testing with 0.5 and 1% SLS, reflecting acute irritation capacity, the reaction pattern, assessed by TEWL, DEWC, laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) and visual scoring (VS), differed from that induced by open, cumulative SLS irritation. Again, inter-individual variation in the reactivity was demonstrated; significant sex-related differences did not develop. Individual reactivity showed considerable variation in acute and cumulative irritant response and was greater than the sex-related variation. We did not identify responses demonstrating that women have delicate (easily irritated) skin, nor that males have "tougher" skin than females.  相似文献
