Cervical cancer is one of the most common gynecological malignancies in Korea, although the incidence has been declining in recent years. This study explored whether antioxidant vitamin intakes influenced the risk of cervical cancer. The association between antioxidant vitamin intakes and cervical cancer risk was calculated for 144 cervical cancer cases and 288 age-matched, hospital-based controls using unconditional logistic regression models. Cases reported statistically lower mean dietary intakes of vitamin A, β -carotene, and vitamin C than did controls. Total intakes of vitamins A and E, which included both dietary and supplement intake, were also lower in cases. Those patients in the highest quartiles of dietary vitamin A, β -carotene, and vitamin C intakes had statistically significantly lower cervical cancer risks than those in the lowest quartiles for vitamin A, β -carotene, and vitamin C: odds ratio (OR) = 0.36 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.19–0.69), OR = 0.48 (CI = 0.26–0.88), and OR = 0.36 (CI = 0.18–0.69), respectively. Total intakes of vitamins A, C, and E were strongly inversely associated with cervical cancer risk: OR = 0.35 (CI = 0.19–0.65), OR = 0.35 (CI = 0.19–0.66), and OR = 0.53 (CI = 0.28–0.99), respectively. The findings support a role for increased antioxidant vitamin intake in decreasing the risk of cervical cancer. These associations need to be assessed in large prospective studies with long-term follow-up.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine whether the intake of nitrate relative to antioxidant vitamin rather than absolute intake of nitrate affects the risk of gastric cancer (GC). In a case-control study in Korea using a food frequency questionnaire, trained dietitians interviewed 136 GC cases and an equal number of controls matched by sex and age. As an index of nitrate intake relative to antioxidant vitamins intake, we calculated the nitrate:antioxidant vitamin consumption ratio. The mean daily nitrate intake from foods was very high in our subjects. Higher absolute intake of nitrate was not associated with GC risk [odds ratios (OR) = 1.13; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.42-3.06]. However, the GC risk distinctly increased as the nitrate:antioxidant vitamin consumption ratio increased, particularly with higher nitrate:vitamin E (OR = 2.78; 95% CI = 1.01-7.67) and nitrate:folate ratios (OR = 3.37; 95% CI = 1.28-8.87). Therefore, GC risk was influenced by the intake of nitrate relative to antioxidant vitamins. Our results suggest that a decrease in the intake of nitrate relative to antioxidant vitamins is considerably more effective in reducing GC risk than either a lower absolute intake of nitrate or a higher intake of antioxidant vitamins alone.  相似文献

We quantified the effect of antioxidant vitamins in gastric cancer risk, taking into account Helicobacter pylori seropositivity and overall fruit and vegetable intake. Incident cases were identified in two large hospitals in Porto, Portugal, and controls were randomly sampled among city dwellers. Food intake was assessed with a previously validated semiquantitative food-frequency questionnaire. A commercially available chromatographic immunoassay was used for the detection of immunoglobulin G antibodies. Complete questionnaire information and serum samples were available for 233 cases and 311 controls. Compared with subjects in the lowest tertile of dietary intake, the odds ratios (ORs) for those in the highest were 0.85 (95% confidence interval, CI = 0.45-1.60) for vitamin C, 1.04 (95% CI = 0.60-1.80) for vitamin E, and 1.33 (95% CI = 0.77-2.30) for provitamin A carotenoids after further adjusting for fruit and vegetable consumption. Fruit and vegetables remained an independent protective factor (OR = 0.45; 95% CI = 0.23-0.89) after further adjustment for the intake of antioxidant vitamins. H. pylori status had no significant interaction with dietary items. Factors other than H. pylori infection and intake of vitamin C and provitamin A carotenoids seem to account for the inverse association between fruit and vegetable consumption and gastric cancer.  相似文献

A hospital-based case–control study of 295 cases with histologically confirmed gastric cancer and age and sex-matched controls was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary vitamin C intake upon the relation between Helicobacter pylori infection and gastric cancer in Korea in 1997–1998. Anti-H. pylori IgG was detected by ELISA. A food frequency questionnaire, and a questionnaire on demographic factors, including past medical history, smoking, alcohol consumption, and life style was also administered. The prevalences of H. pylori IgG in cases and controls were 80.7% and 71.2%, respectively, and the odds ratio (OR) of H. pylori for gastric cancer was 1.68 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.14, 2.44), after adjusting for age, sex, educational level, and a past medical history of gastritis or gastric ulcer. In a stratified analysis, H. pylori seropositivity was found to be a significant risk factor for gastric cancer in the low vitamin C intake group (OR=4.68; 95% CI: 1.97, 11.1), but not in the high vitamin C intake group (OR=0.72; 95% CI: 0.32, 1.65). Vitamin C intake was found to modify the relation between H. pylori and gastric cancer.  相似文献

Although many dietary studies have focused on breast cancer risk, few have examined dietary influence on tumor characteristics such as estrogen receptor (ER) status. Because phytoestrogens may modulate hormone levels and ER expression, we analyzed ER status and phytoestrogen intake in a case-case study of 124 premenopausal breast cancer patients. We assessed intake with a food-frequency questionnaire and obtained ER status from medical records. Rather than focusing on risk, we evaluated whether low intakes were more strongly associated with ER-negative tumors than with ER-positive disease. In logistic regression adjusting for potential confounders, threefold greater risks of ER-negative tumors relative to ER-positive tumors were associated with low intake of the isoflavones genistein (odds ratio, OR=3.50; 95% confidence interval, CI=1.43-8.58) and daidzein (OR=3.10; 95% CI=1.31-7.30). Low intake of the flavonoid kaempferol (OR=0.36; 95% CI=0.16-0.83), the trace element boron (OR=0.33; 95% CI=0.13-0.83), and the phytosterol beta-sitosterol (OR=0.42; 95% CI=0.18-0.98) were associated with decreased risk of ER-negative tumors relative to ER-positive disease. Other phytoestrogens were not significantly associated with ER status. Thus, in premenopausal patients, some phytoestrogens may affect breast carcinogenesis by influencing ER status. Such findings suggest new directions for mechanistic research on dietary factors in breast carcinogenesis that may have relevance for prevention and clinical treatment.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Cangshan County of Shandong Province has one of the lowest rates of gastric cancer (GC) in China. While intestinal metaplasia (IM) and dysplasia (DYS) are less common in Cangshan than in areas of Shandong at high risk of GC, these precursor lesions nevertheless affect about 20% of adults age > or = 55. SUBJECTS AND SETTING: In order to evaluate determinants of IM and DYS in Cangshan County, a low risk area of GC a survey was conducted among 214 adults who participated in a gastroscopic screening survey in Cangshan County in 1994. METHOD: A dietary interview and measurement of serum Helicobacter pylori antibodies were performed. RESULTS: The prevalence of H. pylori was lowest (19%) among those with normal gastric mucosa, rising steadily to 35% for superficial gastritis (SG), 56% for chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG), 80% for IM, and 100% for DYS. The prevalence odds of precancerous lesions were compared with the odds of normal histology or SG. The odds ratio (OR) or CAG associated with H. pylori positivity was 4.2 (95% confidence interval [CI] : 1.7-10.0), while the OR of IM/DYS associated with H. pylori positivity was 31.5 (95% CI: 5.2-187). After adjusting for H. pylori infection, drinking alcohol was a risk factor for CAG (OR = 3.2, 95% CI: 1.1-9.2) and IM/DYS (OR = 7.8, 95% CI: 1.3-47.7). On the other hand, consumption of garlic showed non-significant protective effects and an inverse association with H. pylori infection. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study suggest that infection with H. pylori is a risk factor and garlic may be protective, in the development and progression of advanced precancerous gastric lesions in an area of China at relatively low risk of GC.  相似文献

In 1998-2000, a case-control study of breast cancer was conducted in Heidelberg, Germany. Three hundred ten consecutively recruited cases with primary breast cancer were matched according to 10-yr age groups to 353 controls with conditions unrelated to diet or endocrine disorders. Intake of raw vegetables, total vegetables, and whole-grain products was inversely associated with breast cancer risk (highest vs. lowest quartile adjusted odds ratio [OR] 0.51, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.31-0.84; OR = 0.62, 95% CI = 0.38-1.02; and OR = 0.57; 95% CI = 0.34-0.95, respectively). Also, high intake of some selected vitamins and minerals possessing putative DNA-stabilizing properties displayed significant inverse risk associations. Adjusted ORs were as follows: vitamin C (OR = 0.49, 95% CI = 0.2-0.88), folate equivalents (OR = 0.47, 95% CI = 0.25-0.88), b-carotene (OR = 0.46, 95% CI = 0.27-0.80), zinc (OR = 0.35, 95% CI = 0.15-0.78), and copper (OR = 0.51, 95% CI = 0.31-1.03). In contrast, no significant association with risk was seen for an increased intake of fruits, cooked vegetables, fiber, calcium, manganese, or iron. In this population of German women, components of raw vegetables and some micronutrients appear to decrease breast cancer risk.  相似文献

Maternal vitamin D intake during pregnancy and early childhood wheezing   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
BACKGROUND: Maternal intake of vitamin D in pregnancy is a potentially modifiable but understudied risk factor for the development of asthma in children. OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether maternal vitamin D intake in pregnancy is associated with decreased risks of wheezing symptoms in young children. DESIGN: Subjects were from a birth cohort recruited in utero with the primary objective of identifying associations between maternal diet during pregnancy and asthma and allergies in children. A random sample of 2000 healthy pregnant women was recruited while attending antenatal clinics at the Aberdeen Maternity Hospital, Scotland, at approximately 12 wk gestation. Maternal vitamin D intake was ascertained from a food-frequency questionnaire completed at 32 wk of gestation. The main outcome measures were wheezing symptoms, spirometry, bronchodilator response, atopic sensitization, and exhaled nitric oxide at 5 y. RESULTS: Respiratory details through 5 y and maternal food-frequency-questionnaire data were available for 1212 children. In models adjusted for potential confounders, including the children's vitamin D intake, a comparison of the highest and lowest quintiles of maternal total vitamin D intake conferred lower risks for ever wheeze [odds ratio (OR): 0.48; 95% CI: 0.25, 0.91], wheeze in the previous year (OR: 0.35; 95% CI: 0.15, 0.83), and persistent wheeze (OR: 0.33; 95% CI: 0.11, 0.98) in 5-y-old children. In addition, lower maternal total vitamin D intakes in pregnancy were also associated with decreased bronchodilator response (P = 0.04). No associations were observed between maternal vitamin D intakes and spirometry or exhaled nitric oxide concentrations. CONCLUSION: Increasing maternal vitamin D intakes during pregnancy may decrease the risk of wheeze symptoms in early childhood.  相似文献

In a hospital-based case-control study, we examined dietary intakes of selected nutrients and food groups and ovarian cancer risk among 496 women with primary, histologically confirmed epithelial ovarian cancer and 1,425 women with nonneoplastic diagnoses, ages 20-87 years, admitted to Roswell Park Cancer Institute between 1982 and 1998. Data on diet and other relevant risk factors in the few years before admission were collected with a self-administered questionnaire. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated by unconditional logistic regression adjusting for age, education, region of residence, regularity of menstruation, family history of ovarian cancer, parity, age at menarche, oral contraceptive use, and energy intake. Women in the highest vs. the lowest quartile of total energy had a weak increase in risk (OR = 1.25, 95% CI = 0.90-1.73). Significantly reduced risks were associated with higher intakes of dietary fiber (OR = 0.57, 95% CI = 0.38-0.87), vitamin A (OR = 0.66, 95% CI = 0.45-0.98), carotenoid (OR = 0.64, 95% CI = 0.43-0.93), vitamin E (OR = 0.58, 95% CI = 0.38-0.88), beta-carotene (OR = 0.68, 95% CI = 0.46-0.98), and total fruit and vegetable intake (OR = 0.62, 95% CI = 0.42-0.92). Our findings suggest that a diet high in plant foods may be important in reducing risk of ovarian cancer.  相似文献

We investigated the relationships between intakes of selected dietary nutrients and food groups and risk of cervical cancer in a hospital-based, case-control study including 239 cases diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix and 979 hospital patients with nonneoplastic diagnoses who completed a self-administered questionnaire between 1982 and 1998 at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated by unconditional logistic regression adjusting for age, education, smoking status, use of oral contraceptives, barrier contraceptives and spermicides, family history of cervical cancer, year questionnaire completed, and energy intake. Significant reductions in risk of approximately 40-60% were observed for women in the highest vs. lowest tertiles of dietary fiber (OR=0.59, 95% CI=0.37-0.94), vitamin C (OR=0.52, 95% CI=0.33-0.80), vitamin E (OR=0.44, 95% CI=0.27-0.72), vitamin A (OR=0.47, 95% CI=0.30-0.73), alpha-carotene (OR=0.41, 95% CI=0.27-0.63), beta-carotene (OR=0.44, 95% CI=0.29-0.68), lutein (OR=0.51, 95% CI=0.33-0.79), folate (OR=0.55, 95% CI=0.34-0.88), and total fruit and vegetable intake (OR=0.52, 95% CI=0.34-0.77). Our findings suggest that a diet rich in plant-based nutrients may be important in reducing the risk of cervical cancer.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Although Helicobacter pylori is one of the most common human bacterial infections worldwide, its mode of transmission is unclear. METHODS: To investigate possible associations between H. pylori infection and demographic, lifestyle, and environmental factors in a rural Chinese population, a cross-sectional survey was administered to 3288 adults (1994 seropositive, 1019 seronegative, 275 indeterminate) from 13 villages in Linqu County, Shandong Province, China. RESULTS: Helicobacter pylori prevalence was elevated for: infrequent handwashing before meals (OR = 1.7, 95% CI: 1.0-3.0), crowding (i.e. sharing a bed with >2 people [OR = 2.3, 95% CI: 1.3-4.2]), washing/bathing in a pond or ditch (OR = 1.5, 95% CI: 1.0-2.4), and medium (OR = 1.6, 95% CI: 1.3-2.0) and low (OR = 2.3, 95% CI: 1.9-2.9) compared to high village education level, and reduced for never being married or divorced (OR = 0.4, 95% CI: 0.2-1.0). There was also a suggestion that source of drinking water, especially water from a shallow village well might be related to H. pylori seropositivity. There was no evidence of an association between H. pylori prevalence and alcohol or tobacco use, raw fruit and vegetable intake, or individual social class measures. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that person-to-person transmission is the most plausible route of H. pylori infection in this rural Chinese population, but waterborne exposures deserve further investigation.  相似文献

A number of epidemiological studies have suggested that diet may affect the etiology of prostate cancer, but few have investigated the impact of phytochemical intakes on this cancer. We conducted a case-control study of diet and prostate cancer in western New York involving 433 men with primary, histologically confirmed prostate cancer and 538 population-based controls, frequency matched to cases on age and county of residence. Diet was assessed with a detailed food-frequency questionnaire. We calculated daily intakes of nutrients and the phytochemicals beta-sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol, total phytosterols, total lignan precursors, quercetin, and kaempferol based on published food composition data. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) describing the association of prostate cancer risk with selected nutrients, phytochemicals, and food groups were estimated with unconditional logistic regression. Compared with men in the lowest quartile of intake, reduced risks were observed for men in the highest quartile of intake of vitamin C (OR = 0.49; 95% CI = 0.33-0.74), beta-carotene (OR = 0.53; 95% CI = 0.36-0.79), alpha-carotene (OR = 0.67; 95% CI = 0.47-0.97), lutein (OR = 0.55; 95% CI = 0.37-0.81), lycopene (OR = 0.62; 95% CI = 0.42-0.92), total lignan precursors (OR = 0.66; 95% CI = 0.47-0.94), quercetin (OR = 0.64; 95% CI = 0.44-0.92), and total vegetables (OR = 0.53; 95% CI = 0.36-0.79), but weak increased risks were observed for snacks and sweets (OR = 1.46; 95% CI = 0.95-2.23). Estimates associated with nutrients and phytochemicals were attenuated after adjustment for total vegetable intake. Nevertheless, our results support the hypothesis that a phytochemical-rich, plant-based diet is of importance in reducing risks of hormone-related neoplasms.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Epidemiological data on the relationship between vitamin C intake and ischemic heart disease (IHD) risk are limited in the Asian population, with a high prevalence of smoking. This study aims to investigate the association between vitamin C intake and the incidence of non-fatal IHD in Korean men. METHODS: The case group consisted of 108 patients with electrocardiogram-confirmed myocardial infarction or angiographically confirmed (>or=50% stenosis) coronary artery disease (CAD) who were admitted to a university teaching hospital in Seoul, Korea. The controls were 142 age-matched patients admitted to the departments of ophthalmology and orthopedic surgery at the same hospital. Vitamin C intake was assessed by a nutritionist using a semi-quantitative food frequency method, and body mass index (BMI), tobacco use and past history of cardiovascular disease were determined by examination and interview. RESULTS: After controlling for cardiovascular risk factors, including BMI, smoking, past history of hypertension, past history of hyperlipidemia, dietary intakes of energy, total fat (or subtype of fat), cholesterol, beta-carotene, and vitamin E, the odds ratio (OR) of non-fatal IHD was 0.34 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.13-0.90) in the highest tertile of vitamin C intake compared with those in the lowest tertile. In a subgroup analysis, which compared nonsmokers in the highest tertile of vitamin C intake to current smokers in the lowest tertile of vitamin C intake, the odds ratio of developing non-fatal IHD was 0.12 (95% CI 0.02-0.77). CONCLUSION: This study suggests that higher intake of vitamin C is associated with the decreased risk of non-fatal IHD in a population with a high prevalence of smoking.  相似文献

Folate is key in one-carbon metabolism, disruption of which can interfere with DNA synthesis, repair, and methylation. Efficient one-carbon metabolism requires other B vitamins and the optimal activity of enzymes including 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR). We report a population-based case-control study of folate intake, related dietary factors and MTHFR polymorphisms (C677T, A1298C) and colorectal cancer in a population with relatively high colorectal cancer incidence and relatively low folate intake. A total of 264 cases with histologically confirmed incident colorectal cancer and 408 controls participated. There was no clear trend in risk with reported intakes of total, or dietary, folate, riboflavin, vitamin B12 or vitamin B6, nor were there interactions between folate intake and the other B vitamins or alcohol. For C677T, risk decreased with increasing variant alleles (multivariate OR for CT v. CC = 0.77 (95 % CI 0.52, 1.16); OR for TT v. CC = 0.62 (95 % CI 0.31, 1.24)), which, although not statistically significant, was consistent with previous studies. For A1298C, compared with AA subjects, CC subjects had modest, non-significant, reduced risk (multivariate OR = 0.81 (95 % CI 0.45, 1.49)). There were significant interactions between total folate and C677T (P = 0.029) and A1298C (P = 0.025), and total vitamin B6 and both polymorphisms (C677T, P = 0.016; A1298C, P = 0.033), although the patterns observed differed from previous studies. Seen against the setting of low folate intake, the results suggest that the role of folate metabolism in colorectal cancer aetiology may be more complex than previously thought. Investigation of particular folate vitamers (for example, tetrahydrofolate, 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate) may help clarify carcinogenesis pathways.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori infection is related to several gastroduodenal diseases, though the route of transmission remains unclear. METHODS: A cross-sectional study that included 695 healthy people (males 308, females 387; median age 60 years) participating in a health checkup program in Yamagata Prefecture was conducted. H. pylori status was determined in all subjects by evaluation of serum anti-H. pylori immunoglobulin G antibody. Antibody against hepatitis A virus was used as a marker of fecal-oral exposure to assess the agreement between H. pylori infection and hepatitis A virus infection. Data on other factors known or suspected to be related to infection status were also collected using a questionnaire. RESULTS: Seroprevalence of H. pylori and hepatitis A virus was 60% and 70%, respectively. Kappa values for subjects aged 20-49 and aged 50 or older were 0.07 and 0.02, respectively, and agreement between the presences of both infections was assessed as slight. In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, H. pylori infection was significantly associated with availability of a sewage system in childhood (presence [reference], absence [odds ratio (OR) = 4.06, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.36-13.94]) and the number of gastrointestinal endoscopies undergone (none [reference], once [OR = 1.64, 95% CI: 0.83-3.27], 2-3 times [OR = 3.11, 95% CI: 1.65-5.99], or 4 or more times [OR = 3.18, 95% CI: 1.71-6.03]), (p < 0.01 for trend). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that poor hygiene in childhood is related to H. pylori infection. The fecal-oral route does not seem to be an important mode of transmission, but the possibility of transmission by gastrointestinal endoscopic examination exists.  相似文献

In 1998, the Helicobacter pylori [(13)C]urea breath test was offered to all school beginners (birth cohort 1991/1992) in the city of Leipzig and in Leipzig County, Germany, to determine the colonization prevalence and potential transmission pathways of the bacterium. A total of 3,347 school beginners participated in the test, and 2,888 parents completed the detailed, self-administered questionnaire. The H. pylori prevalence was 6.5% [95% confidence interval (CI), 5.3-7.6] in the city and 5.7% (CI, 4.2-7.0) in the county. Using cluster analysis (WARD's method, Euclidean distances), we identified different sets of variables (confirmed by multivariate logistic regression analyses [odds ratios (ORs)] that are signficantly associated with H. pylori positivity. Among city children, the risk is significantly increased with contact to a pet hamster (OR = 2.4; 95% CI, 1.2-4.7; p < 0.015) and travels to Asian countries (OR = 3.7; 95% CI, 1.6-8.7; p < 0.002). Among county children, H. pylori positivity increased significantly with drinking of water from nonmunicipal sources (OR = 16.4; 95% CI, 3.1-88.5; p < 0.001), more than 3 children living in a household (OR = 4.2; 95% CI, 1.2-14.6; p < 0.02), and contact with pet hamsters (OR = 2.4; 95% CI, 1.0-5.7; p < 0.04). These data suggest that, in a general population sample, indirect fecal-oral transmission and living conditions are important risk factors in the spread of H. pylori infection. However, clinical symptoms do not necessarily indicate H. pylori positivity.

Significant reductions in risk of approximately 40–60% were observed for women in the highest vs. lowest tertiles of dietary fiber (OR = 0.59, 95% CI = 0.37–0.94), vitamin C (OR = 0.52, 95% CI = 0.33–0.80), vitamin E (OR = 0.44, 95% CI = 0.27–0.72), vitamin A (OR = 0.47, 95% CI = 0.30–0.73), α -carotene (OR = 0.41, 95% CI = 0.27–0.63), β -carotene (OR = 0.44, 95% CI = 0.29–0.68), lutein (OR = 0.51, 95% CI = 0.33–0.79), folate (OR = 0.55, 95% CI = 0.34–0.88), and total fruit and vegetable intake (OR = 0.52, 95% CI = 0.34–0.77). Our findings suggest that a diet rich in plant-based nutrients may be important in reducing the risk of cervical cancer.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Vitamin A may influence gastric carcinogenesis through its essential role in controlling cell proliferation and differentiation. However, epidemiologic studies of vitamin A, retinol (preformed vitamin A), and provitamin A carotenoids in relation to the risk of gastric cancer have documented inconsistent results. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to examine the associations between intakes of vitamin A, retinol, and specific carotenoids and the risk of gastric cancer in a prospective population-based cohort study of Swedish adults. DESIGN: The study cohort consisted of 82 002 Swedish adults aged 45-83 y who had completed a food-frequency questionnaire in 1997. The participants were followed through June 2005. RESULTS: During a mean 7.2-y follow-up, 139 incident cases of gastric cancer were diagnosed. High intakes of vitamin A and retinol from foods only (dietary intake) and from foods and supplements combined (total intake) and of dietary alpha-carotene and beta-carotene were associated with a lower risk of gastric cancer. The multivariate relative risks for the highest versus lowest quartiles of intake were 0.53 (95% CI: 0.32, 0.89; P for trend = 0.02) for total vitamin A, 0.56 (95% CI: 0.33, 0.95; P for trend = 0.05) for total retinol, 0.50 (95% CI: 0.30, 0.83; P for trend = 0.03) for alpha-carotene, and 0.55 (95% CI: 0.32, 0.94; P for trend = 0.07) for beta-carotene. No significant associations were found for beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein and zeaxanthin, or lycopene intake. CONCLUSION: High intakes of vitamin A, retinol, and provitamin A carotenoids may reduce the risk of gastric cancer.  相似文献

This study investigated the relationship between the intake of antioxidant nutrients and the suffering of cataracts in 177 institutionalized elderly people (61 men and 116 women) aged > or = 65 years. Dietary intake was monitored for 7 consecutive days using a "precise individual weighing" method. Subjects, who during their earlier years were exposed by their work to sunlight, had a greater risk of suffering cataracts (OR = 3.2; CI: 1.1-9.3, P < 0.05) than those who worked indoors. A relationship was found between increased vitamin C intake and a reduced prevalence of cataracts (i.e., when comparing those above P95 for vitamin C intake with those below P5; (OR = 0.08; CI: 0.01-0.75, P 0.05). Among subjects with cataracts, 12.1% had vitamin C intakes of < 61 mg/day (P10) and only 2.2% had intakes of > 183 mg/day (P95) (p < 0.01). Subjects who consumed > 3290 microg/day (P95) of lutein were less likely to have cataracts (OR = 0.086; CI: 0.007-1.084; p < 0.05) than those whose consumption was < 256 microg/day (P5). In men, high intakes of zeaxanthin seemed to provide a protective effect against the problem (OR = 0.96; CI: 0.91-0.99; p < 0.05). The results suggest an association exists between exposure to sunlight and the development of cataracts, and that vitamin C, lutein, and zeaxanthin offer some protection against this disorder.  相似文献
