AimResearch has proven a link between oral health and numerous chronic systemic diseases. To achieve better health outcomes, there is a need to involve interprofessional primary health care providers, such as nurses to raise awareness and promote oral health. Nurses have regular contact with patients which provides a unique opportunity to impart disease-specific information and technical skills for patients to self-manage their oral health conditions. However, the baseline oral health literacy of undergraduate nursing students at the University of Sydney is not known. Before creating a targeted curriculum to improve oral health literacy amongst nursing students, it is essential to assess the baseline oral health knowledge of these students. This study aimed to assess the oral health literacy level among undergraduate nursing students of the University of Sydney, Australia.DesignAn exploratory research approach was used.MethodsA cross-sectional survey study was conducted using the validated Comprehensive Measure of Oral Health Knowledge (CMOHK) instrument. A univariate general linear model was used to explore the association of CMOHK total score with demographic and educational variables.ResultsA total number of 197 nursing students participated in the survey, with a mean CMOHK score of 15.48, SD 3.27. 72% were categorized as having good, 16% fair and 12% poor oral health knowledge. The analysis from the six individual knowledge domains of the CMOHK revealed lower percentages of correct responses in the periodontal disease and oral cancer knowledge domains. Students with English as their second language, on average, scored 2 fewer correct responses (p <.001) than students whose first language was English. Low socioeconomic status was not associated with a low level of oral health literacy.ConclusionThe baseline results show a good level of general oral health knowledge as measured by the CMOHK. However, periodontal disease and oral cancer were identified as the particular domains where a knowledge gap exists. These findings may help to map and design an oral health education intervention to improve oral health literacy amongst nursing students. Culturally responsive pedagogy may need to be considered for students with English as their second language. This baseline survey data may potentially facilitate integrating oral health in nursing education and practice.  相似文献

Health literacy is a critical component of public health nursing, particularly in rural areas where access to health services is severely limited. As it relates to quality of care, cost of care, safety of care, and appropriate decision-making in general public health, health literacy can also be seen as an important public policy issue. Several challenges that can be found in rural communities in terms of access to health literacy, such as limited access to healthcare services, limited resources, low literacy rate, cultural and language barriers, financial constraints, and digital divide. Based on these challenges, several innovations can be pursued such as community-based health education, health literacy training among healthcare professionals, digital health technology, partnerships with community-based organizations, health literacy radio programs, and community health ambassadors. This reflection highlights the challenges and innovations that nurses can do to overcome the problem of low-health literacy in rural communities. In the future, the development of community empowerment and technology will be needed to refine the progress made so that a gradual increase in health literacy in rural communities can be seen.  相似文献

Aim: To describe the development process of nursing school‐led community health promotion centers (CHPC) to improve the health of the surrounding communities. Methods: This study design was a research and development study. (i) Assessment of health needs by interviewing 359 people in the community to select health programs for the community health promotion center. (ii) Five health promotion strategies from the Ottawa Charter were applied to develop the community health promotion center for a city community. Results: (i) The people in the community had higher socioeconomic status levels and better health behaviors compared to the general Korean population, and they also listed chronic health problem management as their first priority health service. (ii) Development of the community health promotion center was done based on the five World Health Organization's Ottawa Charter Health Promotion Strategies: build healthy public policy, create supportive environments, strengthen community actions, develop personal skills, and reorient health services. Conclusions: The present study showed that the WHO's five Ottawa Charter Health Promotion Strategies were useful for developing health promotion centers in the community.  相似文献

Research linking health literacy to health knowledge, health behaviors, health outcomes, health disparity, health status, and increasing health-care costs is prevalent around the globe. Given the importance of health literacy, it is prudent to examine the tools available to assure that patients are health-literate. This article provides an integrative review in order to investigate what has been developed to evaluate health literacy in the health-care setting. The research questions considered include: (i) Which instruments or screening tools are available to assess or measure health literacy in the clinical setting?; and (ii) What are the psychometric properties, advantages, and limitations of the identified tools? A number of databases are utilized to locate research specific to this topic. The research is analyzed, the findings are summarized, and the limitations are mentioned. The implications, recommendations, and the need for future research are discussed.  相似文献
