Risk factors for dry eye after femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery

Abstract:Objective To evaluate potential risk factors that may cause dry eye after femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery.Methods In this retrospective cohort study, 416 patients who underwent femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery in our hospital from January 2015 to December 2018 were selected, and their detailed medical history was also collected. Only the first surgical eye was included. Univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the potential risk factors that might cause dry eye after femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery.Results At one week after surgery, the incidence of dry eye was 20.19%(84 eyes). By the first month, the percentage fell to 10.82%(45 eyes). By the third month, the percentage dropped to 1.92%(8 eyes). According to multivariate logistic regression, risk factors for dry eye after femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery included female sex (OR=3.973, P=0.001), drinking (OR=27.444, P<0.001), type 2 diabetes (OR=12.204, P<0.001), meibomian gland dysfunction (OR=2.591, P=0.017), previous ocular surgeries (OR=67.226, P<0.001), contact lens (OR=15.019, P<0.001), high cumulative dissipated energy (OR=1.188, P=0.002), and long negative-pressure suction duration (OR=1.101, P<0.001).Conclusion Female sex, drinking, type 2 diabetes, meibomian gland dysfunction, previous ocular surgeries, contact lens, high cumulative dissipated energy, and long negative-pressure suction duration are risk factors that may cause dry eye after femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery. Clinicians should give relevant intervention to reduce the incidence of dry eye.
