Abstract:Objective To measure if the pulmonary function test system of unrestrained animals could help diagnosis and treatment of perfluoroisobutylene (PFIB) inhalation toxicosis. Methods To record the change in pulmonary function parameters, such as inspiratory time (TI) , expiratory time (TE) , breathing frequency (F) , peak inspiratory flow (PIF) , peak expiratory flow (PEF) , tidal volume (VT) and expired volume (VE) , by unrestrained whole body plethysmography (EMKA Technologies, France) , before and after Wistar rats exposed to 150 mg/m3 PFIB for 8 min. Results The TI and TE decreased obviously at 4 h after PFIB exposure, and reduced to 129 ms and 215 ms at 8 h after PFIB exposure, respectively. The PIF, PEF and the breathing frequency increased significantly, on the contrary, the VT and VE decreased markedly at 8 h after PFIB exposure. Conclusion The pulmonary function test system can be handled easily, and can be used for measuring the changes in pulmonary parameters in the study of inhalation toxicology.
