Abstract:HeLa cells were incubated in vitro with sulfur mustard, and thereafter submitted to transmission electron microscopy to examine the ultrastructure changes caused by different concentrations of sulfur mustard. The results showed that sulfur mustard-injured HeLa cells manifested typical morphological characteristics of apoptosis or necrosis according to the concentration used. Sulfur mustard at low concentration (0.1 mmol·L-1) caused cell apoptosis, whereas at high concentration (1.0 mmol·L-1) induced necrosis. Both the apoptosis and necrosis were developed in time- dependent fashions.
