Abstract:Objective To explore the association between Oral and Maxillofacial pain and depression and anxiety symptoms in older adults. Methods Data in this study were from the 8th wave of Chinese longitudinal health longevity survey (CLHLS). Binary logistic regression was employed to explore the association between maxillofacial pain and depressive and anxiety symptoms after adjusting potential confounders. Results A total of 6 433 elderly people were included, with an average age of (83.58±11.21) years old. Among 6 433 respondents, 3 671(57.07%) were females, 1 325 (20.60%) had oral and maxillofacial pain, 1 130 (17.57%) had depressive symptoms, and 124 (1.93%) had anxiety symptoms. Oral and maxillofacial pain was positively associated with depression symptoms (OR=1.576, 95%CI:1.348-1.840), and anxiety symptoms (OR=2.251, 95%CI:1.536-3.259). Conclusion Oral maxillofacial is associated with depressive and anxiety symptoms in older adults. More attention needs to be paid on older adults with oral and maxillofacial pain, and timely interventions are recommended in order to promote mental health of older adults.
Keywords:Oral and Maxillofacial pain  Depressive symptoms  Anxiety symptoms  Chinese longitudinal health longevity survey (CLHLS)
