Abstract:To describe the benefits and mechanisms of phytochemicals on T2DM-induced cognitive dysfunction.Methods Literature search was conducted in CNKI, VIP, Wan-fang database, Pubmed, Science Direct and Springer from2010 to 2020 with “Type 2 diabetes mellitus/T2DM”, “insulin resistance”, “mitochondria”, “Endoplasmic reticulum stress”and “phytochemicals” as searching terms. Results The hyperglycemia and insulin resistance of T2DM can cause mitochondrial damage, endoplasmic reticulum stress, inflammation and cell apoptosis of neurons, which may lead to cognitive dysfunction. Various phytochemicals such as polyphenols and saponins exert cognitive protective effects by regulating the above-mentioned pathological changes. Conclusion Phytochemicals have a protective effect on cognitive impairment induced by T2DM animal model, providing a substantial laboratory basis for their effective prevention and treatment. However, the population evidence is not sufficient.
