| Abstract: | Based on the clinical study of patients with anorexia nervosa in Hong Kong and a review of the literature, this paper reportS the absence of fat phobia in a proportion of Chinese and other Asian patients. It suggests that the contemporary Western diagnostic criteria need to be broadened when they are applied in Chillnse societies. Sociocultural differences which may account for the rarity of anorexia nervosa in Chinese people are explored. However, as a result of industrialization and modernization, more eating disorders are expected to arise in the future. |
