Correlation Analysis of Physical Activity and Tobacco Dependence in College Student Smokers

Objective To analyze the correlation between the physical activity level and tobacco dependence of college students,and to explore the influence of physical activity at different levels on the latter.Methods One hundred and thirty-three male college smokers were enrolled and assessed the physical activity level and tobacco dependence using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire(IPAQ) and the Fagerstrom Test of Nicotine Dependence(FTND) respectively.Spearman correlation analysis was used to test their correlation,and multi-independent sample non-parametric test(KruskalWallis single-factor ANOVA) was used to evaluate the difference in tobacco dependence between students with different levels of physical activity.Results The average physical activity level of college smokers was 5124.28 ± 3381.43 MET-min/w,while the average degree of tobacco dependence was 2(0~4) points,resulting in the non-parametric correlation analysis Spearman ’ s rho of-0.21(P<0.05).Significant differences were found in the tobacco dependence between the students of low-level physical activity and those of high-and medium-level physical activity[6(2.25~8) vs.1(0~4),P<0.01;6(2.25~8) vs.2(0-4),P<0.05].However,there was no significant difference in tobacco dependence between college students of high-and medium-level physical activity[1(0~4) vs.2(0~4),P>0.05].Conclusion The physical activity level of college students is negatively correlated with their degree of tobacco dependence,and both high and medium level of physical activity can lead to low tobacco dependence without significant difference.
