Abstract:Brain injury was produced by a falling weight in 46 rabbits. Brain water contents were determined by the dry weight method, and their Na+. K+ contents were determined. We used both Evans' blue and colloidal gold as tracers for the evaluation of blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability in the present study. The preliminary results showed that brain water contents were increased at 0.5h after brain injury, and became more marked at 6h, concerring with alterations in Na+ and K+ contents. Evans' blue and colloidal gold passed through BBB due to an augmentation of BBB permeability in brain injury animals. It was found that anisodamine reduced BBB permeability, therefore advantagous in the treatment of cerebral edema.
