Correlations of B-type natriuretic peptide and heart rate turbulence in elderly patients with chronic heart failure

Objective To investigate the correlations of B-type natriuretic peptide （ BNP ） and heart rate turbulence （HRT） in elderly patients with chronic heart failure （CHF）. Methods B-type natriuretie peptide and turbulence onset （TO） and turbulence slope （TS） were measured in 36 cases of elderly patients with CHF and 20 healthy controls. CHF patients were classified into mild group and severe group according to NYHA. The left ventricular ejection fraction （LVEF） and left ventrieular end diastolic diameter （ LVDED ） were taken as indicators of heart function. Correlation of BNP with TO, TS, LVEF and LVDED was observed. Results As for the heart failure group, BNP as well as LVDED and TO values were obviously higher than those of the comparison group. LVEF as well as TS values were remarkably lower than those of tire comparison group. BNP, LVDED and TO of the severe CHF group were higher than those of the mild group. LVEF and TS of the severe CHF group were lower than those of the mild group. In heart failure group, there was positive correlation between BNP and LVDED, TO and negative correlation between BNP and LVEF, TS. Conclusion BNP is associated with the heart function and HRT of CHF. Intensive BNP,HRT and suitable therapy strategy may help to attenuate the cardiac remodeling in patients with CHF.
