Update and interpretation of guidelines of extracranial carotid artery revascularization

Surgical intervention for carotid artery stenosis and occlusive disease plays a key role in the tertiary prevention system of stroke. After decades of practice, the techniques and conceptions of extracranial carotid artery revascularization have been significantly improved. During this period, the corresponding guidelines of it have experienced several major updates, which are critical in the standardization and development of this field. Recently, both Europe and North America have published the latest editions of guidelines for the extracranial carotid artery revascularization, among which there are many new viewpoints that deserve our special attention, or herald major breakthroughs at this field in the next decade. This article will interpret the development and updated points in the new guidelines for extracranial carotid artery revascularization.
