1983年Mazur和Clark鉴别了胃肠道平滑肌瘤与间质瘤，首先命名其为”胃肠间质瘤”。它是源于胃肠道间叶组织肿瘤，组织学上以梭形细胞和上皮样细胞呈束状交叉或弥漫性排列组成。
