The Comparative Study of Aripiprazole Versus Olanzapine in the Treatment of Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms Associated with Senile Dementia

Objective To study the efficacy and safety of Aripiprazole and Olanzapine in the treatment of Behavioral and psychological symptoms of senile dementia（BPSD）.Methods 58 patients with BPSD were divided into two groups at random.One group of patients was treated by Aripiprazole for 8 weeks while another group of patients was treated by Olanzapine for same period.The effect and adverse effect were evaluated by adopting the behavioral pathology in Alzheimer＇s Disease Scale（BEHAVE-AD）,Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory（CMAI）and Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale（TESS）.Results The BEHAVE-AD and CMAI scores of two groups decrease significantly after the treatment（P0.01）.The difference of BEHAVE-AD score between two groups is not statistically significant（P0.05）.The patients with symptoms of somnolence,getting weight,or extrapyramidal effect in Olanzapine group are more than those in Aripiprazole group（P0.01）.Conclusion The efficacy of Aripiprazole in the treatment of BPSD is the same as that of Olanzapine,but Aripiprazole is safer than Olanzapine.
