Therapeutic effect of edaravone on elderly patients with acute brain stem infarction

Objective To evaluate the efficacy and safety of edaravone on elderly patients with acute brain stem infarction. Methods Sixty-five elderly patients with brain stem infarction,enrolled within 48 h of onset,were allocated to edaravone group(n=35) or control group(n=30) randomly. Edaravone was infused at a dose of 30 mg,twice a day,for 10-14 days,Meanwhile,Xuesetong and aspirin were taken as basic treatment.The therapies of control group were similar to those of edaravone group except for edaravone.The European Stroke Scale(ESS) and activities of daily living(ADL) were evaluated before and during trentment respectively. Results After treatment, There were significant differences between edaravone group and control group in ESS and ADL(P<0.05) . There was also significant differences between the two groups in the efficiency(P<0.05) .There were no distinct adverse reactions in edaravone group. Conclusions Edaravone is effective and safe in the treatment of elderly patients with acute brain stem infarction.
