Impact of smoking on pharmacotherapy of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Harmful gases or granules such as cigarette smoke can lead to abnormal pulmonary inflammation, which are important dangerous pathogenic factors influencing the occurrence, development and prognosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD has high morbidity and mortality,with a rising trend year by year. Its major drug treatments include bronchodilators, corticosteroids,mucolytics agents and anti-inflammatory drugs such as antibiotics and phosphodiesterase 4 inhibitors, and so on. Recently studies have shown that smoking may have an adverse effect on these medications in treating COPD. So we reviewed these studies in this paper in order to attract patients and clinicians' much attention on this issue and guide the disease to get a better treatment.
