Population aging and a sustainable development of medical care

The medical care features of the aged population in a rapidly aging society and their impact on the field of medical care are here discussed. The point is raised that if preparatory steps are not taken before the peak of population aging arrives sometime in the next century, we shall be in a fluster. In the light of the medical care characteristics of the elderly, the government should develop a sustainable medical care program, giving priority to prevention, enhancing prophylactic treatment of geriatric disorders, giving wider publicity to healthkeeping, cultivating higher sense of selfcare among old persons, seeking a model of community medical care, training a backbone of medical personnel for the communities, and establishing a medical insurance system for the aged, so as to make their terminal life a healthy one.
