Construction of the belief and attitudes of nurses toward family visits to PACU children scale and testing of its reliability and validity

Objective To construct a scale of nurses' beliefs and attitudes toward the family visit to post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) children and test its reliability and validity. Methods After the literature review and expert consultation, a draft was established and used to investigate 460 PACU nursing staff to test its reliability and validity. Results The final version contained 20 items, 17 of the belief and 3 of the attitude. The Cronbach's α coefficient, test-retest reliability and content validity was 0.924, 0.898 and 0.892 respectively. The cumulative variance contribution rate of the three factors in the belief dimension extracted by exploratory factor analysis was 62.423%, the correlation coefficient between each dimension was 0.53~0.65, and the correlation coefficient between each dimension and the total score of the scale was 0.73~0.91. The confirmatory factor analysis indicated that all factors of the scale met the standard. Conclusion The scale constructed has good reliability and validity, and can be used in the clinical practice.
