Abstract:Eustachian tube dysfunction(ETD)is an important factor in the pathogenesis of various middle ear diseases.It can lead to insufficient middle ear ventilation,resulting in aural fullness and tinnitus.In addition,it can cause complications such as secretory otitis media,tympanic membrane atelectasis and cholesteatoma.There is still no gold standard for ETD testing.Current methods for assessing Eustachian tube function include endoscopy,tubomanometry(TMM),acoustic immittance tympanometry,sonotubometry and 7-item Eustachian Tube Dysfunction Questionnaire(ETDQ-7),as well as the Eustachian Tube Score(ETS)scale and its derivative-Eustachian Tube Score-7(ETS-7)scale that combine clinical presentations with objective test results.A number of medications and surgical methodologies have been used to improve Eustachian tube function,but outcomes are not always satisfactory.Eustachian tube balloon dilatation is a new method for treatment of ETD.This article reviews on Eustachian tube function evaluation and clinical application of Eustachian tube balloon dilatation,in an attempt to summarize on practical and objective methodologies for the diagnosis and treatment of ETD.
