脉应指时的形象为脉象。脉中血液是由气统摄并以气为其运行之动力。医者可通过诊脉查探人体气机运动。气的运动即为气机,气机诊断为中医辨证之导向,因气机运动包括了人体内部的气机变化和人体与外界环境的各种交换,且气机运动维系着脏腑功能,遂能反应脏腑气机之常变。气血的变化是脉形成的基础,气血生理失常,则脉见病象。因此,脉诊可通过分析气机动向来诊断脏腑病变的病因病机及机体气血阴阳之盛衰。大凡疾病是由伤气而发,气机在失调但未至大伤之时可通过脉象体现于指端,这使脉诊在疾病的早期诊断和早期诊治中具有极大优势。
