A control study of sertraline plus RTMS in the treatment of treatment-resistant depression

Objective To explore the clinical efficacy and safety of antidepressants plus repetitive transcra- nial magnetic stimulation （RTMS） in the treatment of treatment-resistant depression （TRD）. Methods Eighty-eight TRD patients were randomly devided into experimental group （n=45） and control group （n=43）, both groups took orally sertraline 100mg/d, the experimental was plus RTMS and the control plus modified electroconvulsive therapy （MECT） for 4 weeks. Clinical efficacies were assessed with the Hamilton Depression Scale （HAMD）before and at the end of the 4th week treatment, and onset time, dropout rate, adverse reactions etc. recorded; cognitive impairment conditions were assessed with the Wechsler Memory Scale-revised（WMS-R）. Results After treatment, the HAMD total scores of both groups lowered more significantly compared with pretreatment（P~0.01）, effective rates were respectively 65.11% in the experimental and 71.05% in the control group; there were no significant differences in dropout rate, effective rate, onset time and per capita adverse reactions between two groups（P〉0.05）. There were no significant changes in WMS-R scores of both groups between pre-and post-treatment, although all subscale scores in the corresponding period had differences between two groups, differences were not significant（P〉0.05）. Conclusion Antidepressants plus RTMS and plus MECT have same significant efficacy in TRD; but the former have hgiher safety and operate more conveniently, the latter take effect more rapidly.
