Effect of physical training on divers participating in the 480 m simulated heliox saturation dive

Abstract:Objective To explore the method of physical training for great depth saturation divers, so as to increase their sustainability for the consumption of physical energy during prolonged exposure to hyperbaric pressure. Methods Nine male navy divers received aerobic training with set-distance and time-reckoning run, set-distance frog swimming, etc. Pre and post training scores were recorded. Then, comparisons were made between the scores obtained and the heart rate of the trainees of the 4 divers who had just completed the 480 m simulated saturation dive. Results Through training, the running speed of the 3 divers, who failed to pass 《 the Physical Performance Standards of Navy Divers》before training, and with lower physical performance in the 3000 m time-reckoning race increased quite considerably, with an amplitude of 10.4%. No significant changes could be seen in the running speed of the remaining 6 divers with higher or better physical performance, with an amplitude of only 1.15%, without statistical significance (P>0. 05). For the 4 divers who participated in the 480 m saturation dive and who received 30-day physical performance recovery training after the dive, their training scores decreased obviously, when compared with those before training, with statistical significance (P<0.05). Their training scores were also lower, when they were compared with those after training, with statistical significance ( P < 0. 01 ). When compared with those before training, the heart rates monitored immediately after termination of the training dropped by 7. 9 times/min on the average, with statistical difference (P<0. 01). The speed of set-distance frog swimming all increased significantly, with an amplitude of 24.4%, also with statistical difference ( P < 0. 01 ). Conclusions Rational training could improve the physical performance of divers and enhance their sustainability or endurance for the energy consumption in the great depth saturation dives.
